hey everyone! please note that these are pre-facelift mirrors of all E39s except M5s. the post facelift-mirrors are of a simpler, lighter design which unfortunately will not allow the disassembly of the mirror housing frame anymore.

Any chance you've done it on an E46 or E65? Are they identical? On more recent BMWs, you need to disassemble the mirror from its base which seems tricky with the huge spring

Hey I got question, how do u make mirrors are folding with key? I got folding mirrors and read about some electronics added to center locking and when u lock car mirrors automatically fold. Maybe u can help me out with this ;)

are the folding mirrors on the 540i aswell?

I suppose they were an option, but maybe not on all markets. My car is 520i (made for German market).

@@ProperRepair ooh okay yea i think if i find one its also from the german market since i live in holland next to germany so but im lookinh for manual 540i e39 and i whas wondering if they had folding mirrors

I wish I had an E39 M5 to check :) But I do not think so. Since the mirrors fold upwards the motor is positioned differently. If I am not mistaken, the gear mechanism is located under that motor and cannot be removed without taking off the entire mirror assembly.

Can I spray the gears with WD40 since I dont have any grease?

Absolutely not. WD40 (the original stuff) is not a lubricant.

@@ProperRepair Alright. Also my mirrors dont stutter but they close maybe halfway sometimes a bit more but never fully. Is it the same problem, the same procedure to fix it?

I can only speculate, but it seems like the switch stops the movement before the mirrors fully close. This switch is on the bottom side of the gear system, there is a small plastic cover over it secured by a small Phillips screw. I would try to disassemble all the plastic covers and then observe the gears, the switch and the notch into which this switch "clicks" (it will make more sense when you see it in action). Based on what I would see I would then decide on further actions (maybe something is broken, stuck, ...).

@@ProperRepair turns out there was so much grease that they couldnt open all the way. Now that i cleaned it properly they work flawlessly. Only remaining thing is to make them unfold remotely 😁 Thanks for the tutorial!
