After so long of watching this great video I finally fixed both of mine today no welding though I found the way to use a female spacer fine thread and it worked really good
Drilling an access hole and adding lube did not work for my passenger side mirror but this method shown did! An alternative to re-assembling by welding is to use a nut, bolt and combination of washers which can be slid off center to allow the wiring to pass through.
Your a legend I’m taking this on and I don’t have a welder. Bought the car but driver side wire is cut and my passenger side pin is jammed… I drilled the hole and pushed the pin but perhaps I drilled too much as the pin jumped out… now I need a new metal housing which is 60$
I don’t suppose you’ve got any more information on how you did this, reattaching with a bolt and combination of washers? Im struggling to see how that would work
Everything is clear and the video is very helpful. The only question I have is when you welded the steel washer to the "metal stick", did you weld it in the way it would move or stood still?
good vid I have an E46 02 323i with this type of setup but I think the gears are different ..was thinking of repairing the mirror I have but the pivot sleeve I think I would try and replace it with something ..did you measure the pivot pin ...there would have to be something that would take the place of it...or if I have to use existing pivot I might try and solder instead of welding
I just came upon a web site in Aliexpress which might have a pivot tube ...was thinking on Sanitary Hose Barb Pipe Fittings has top collar and was thinking could put c/clip to the bottom barb instead of welding ...can you tell me what was the dimensions of the pivot sleeve if you remember
This is the best long term repair. Also if you are not good at repairing things ? or have no clue how to understand how to attemp this repair ? Or don't have the needed tools ? you will F up this repair in many ways.
I did something very similar to this. Instead of welding I just took a 12mm alu tube, cut it to size, cut in 2 grooves and used seger rings to avoid having to weld anything. Mechanically everything went well but disaster struck, im not sure what went wrong, but now my entire window switch assembly is dead, cant open any windows or adjust mirrors. Any thoughts why? The only clear fuckup I can think of is forgetting to disconnect the battery before cutting the 3 pin mirror cable. Nothing noticable happened during the cut but I have no other explanation.
great work. I am looking for the typical problem with the exterior mirror. everything is shown very well on the video. only what i didn't understand is how did you end up reattaching the sleeve? is it welded or soldered?
Anyone have any more info on how you could use a bolt, nut and combination of washers to make this work if you can’t weld and don’t have access to a welder?
JUST FIXED THIS DIFFERENT WAY!!!! JUST SPRAYED A LOT OF WD40 UNDER THE ROTATING PART OF THE MIRROR. Remove plastic cower, then just pull whole mirror up (or bend it to the side) so there's a thin space under the rotating mechanism between the mirror and car holder. (Buy small 100ml WD40 with thin pipe, so you can squeeze it deeper into that 1mm space what you will have when pulling mirror up or bending it to the side. Note! You can pull or bend it just slightly, just few millimeters). Spray WD40 into that space aiming to the area, where this stuck thing is located (that thing with spring, what this guy in video oiling in the end), keep removing excessive WD40 with paper towel. Rotate left right, shake a bit the whole mirror, not too much, don't damage anything, then repeat. After a while (in 5 minutes or may be 1 hour) oxidation on the lock will be gone, the mechanism will get unlocked and working again. No need to damage the mirror. Then just put plastic cower back.

For anyone down this rabbit hole on an F25 X3 (2011-2017), the axle on which the mirror pivots can be removed by pressing it down and rotating the part about 1/8th of a turn. if you drill a 5mm through the gaps in the spring, you can get a hex wrench in between there to assist with the rotation. Then you can reuse the part and avoid finding someone with a tig welder.
@@mortsidestreet I don’t, sorry. Note that on the driver’s side, the axle must be turned *clockwise* to release it. It’s the opposite of what you’d expect.
Thanks! I still could not figure out how to twist it. To be exact, I dont know how to press it down properly. I think there is a proper tool for it though. Im trying to picture how to do your suggested approach.
Good job Turbo Lab....I have the same problem with my 07' 328i the driverside mirror. So i have a question: on the time from 0.17 through 0.23 is that drilling the only way to seperate that part. Thanks!
At 0:13 you can see that there is originally a flared flange swaged into the tube which he drills out to release it. Since material is removed he had to weld the washer to hold the tube in place. The welded washer replaces the original lip that was flared out on the tube that held it in when it was originally assembled. That tube that goes through the spring at 4:11 has a flange on both ends when the mirror is built, but in order to remove it he had to drill off the flange on one end.
thank you for responding to my comment, but I dont know how to welded, is it like a tig welding that the washer was welded? and was that washer had to be the same kind of material for it to welded?
Hi. This video is helpful for me and thanks but I still can not release the spring even I used same tool to pulled up the spring. Can you teach me how to release the spring. Thank you
No other way to separate the mirror assembly and base part?. how to remove the plastic bottom cover with out damage? you have made video no one else made.good.

Anyone knows if I can fix the e46 coupe/convertible folding up side mirrors the same way? My driver side mirror is stuck for about 5 years now and I finally want to fix that. Goes up by pushing the button, but not going down (only by hand)… I need to fix that shit now!
@@turbolabamerica hi, unfortunately not about adjustment but the power fold. I have the exact same problem that this dude shows, but no one seems to have a solution, which is ridiculous… in all they years: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SGIPQDkZ0iE.htmlsi=8jCrEfclSlS8pOu4

The lower cover I forgot to show. You can follow this video first: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PLLx8a10ewM.html this video was hard to understand so I redid the video in my own way but I originally watched this video to understand how to fix the problem.

The fact you need to drill and weld is a bummer. I've seen a polish guy use a hollow bolt, which looks easier: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ht5_UjNu3xE.html
If you have the M5 mirrors, they are not 5-15 USD, more like 500 USD pr. pcs. Also standard mirrors are expensive here in Norway, at least 100-150 USD.
