I ended up picking up the older 35mm Summilux ASPH pre-FLE lens and it renders really nicely and smooth without any nervousness of the new FLE lens. It does have its quirks though with some focus shift but it is pretty linear and easy to compensate for. It will shift from f2 to f5.6 and is gone after that but I mostly shoot wide open anyways or f8. Stellar lens.

Hi Matt, nice video. I want to add a few points. First, I found the Voigtländer Nokton Classic-M 35 mm f/1.4 to not be in the same league as the Leica Summilux-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH FLE I. I sold that Voigtländer lens w/o any regret. Second, Leica recently released a new version of the Summilux 35 (ASPH FLE II) that’s a bit less costly ($5.395 vs. $6,000), has 11 aperture blades vs. 9, and can focus closer (0.4 m vs. 0.7 m). Also, FWIW, I had also purchased a TT Artisans-M 50 mm f/1.4 but sold it (too soft for my needs).

Hey Matt, I may have mentioned it before, but ever since i bought the Lux 35mm FLE, it basically never left the camera. On the M10-R it gives a very special look, (and you know which photo I mean) that the CV f1.2 , nor other 35mm lenses did not. Spending $6k? Certainly not, but the £3k i spent on a used version? 35mm lenses is something I mostly have on point & shoot cameras ( like the Nikon L35AF, the Konica Big Mini, the Kodak S1100 XL and so on). I do have a 35mm Nikkor AF-D lens, that I use for various Nikon film and digital camera bodies. It's a nice enough focal length, but becomes too much of a compromise for me, so for my Leica cameras, I'm picking a 28mm lens before I'll consider 35mm.

I hate to say it but I feel it's a bit too clinical. After using a bunch of 35's I still keep going back to my Summarit f/2.4 ASPH....less vignetting than almost any Voigtlander, has a great balance of clinical and classic leica character, is small and hella sharp. Prices have been creeping up in the past year now and I've seen the 2.4 version go for more than older summicrons. If that TT is as good as the 50mm f/1.4 ASPH then it should be a keeper. Only issue with both is that they are just a skosh bigger than I'd prefer.

The video is okay but I was under the impression that you would give the Summilux more attention but instead of that most of the video is about other stuff. Now the Summilux is probably the best Leica lens in general (great DoF, super sharp, and the micro contrast is great) Then why would one buy a Noctilux, well it is faster, very narrow DoF which can look great when proper used, and it has a more dreamy look, if that is your goal. However some of the F2 Summicrons are super too, for half the price. In proper tests you will even see that old Summilux versions still can hold place between the latest and "greatest" lenses of other brands. And YES the price is worth it, ONLY if you can see the difference (and afford it) , but again, if somebody shows you where to look for you are spoiled and will notice it, cause that extra mile of quality is always THE MOST EXPENSIVE Browsing through YOUR photo's on your site, I can often spot the Summilux shots just by looking at them (if you didn't diluted them to much with your "Ketchup presets" ;-) . Now about the alternatives, will the Voigtlanders give you better BANG FOR YOUR BUCK ...DEFINITLY.... as you an others have proven over and over !!!! Good video though and thanks for sharing !!

I never would pay 6,000 USD for a lens. Shoot the same portrait with any of the lenses you mentioned with the same settings, print them on 20x30 inch or so, and do a test with amateurs and professional photographers: I would be very surprised if the picture shot with the 6,000 USD lens would be identified outside of statistical probability. However, than ask them, which picture they like most, and with a little luck one or two lenses will actually score outside of statistical probability. And I would not bet, that the Summilux would be among them.

Beg to differ. That sumilux is sharp. Blow it up big. Edge sharpness , aberrations and distortions as well as color rendition..

@@carlosoruna7174 Of course its sharp. All professional grade lenses are. However, I very much doubt that the average - and even the trained - human eye would be able to identify the Summilux picture in the aforementioned stash.

Thanks Rabert, yes I could probably tell you which was shot with the 1.2 Voigtlander as it is sharp and contrasty but if you gave me photos shot with say expensive "other brand" lenses I wouldn't be able to say.

Thanks Carlos, I think is a great lens for sure (i'm not hating it) but other cheaper lenses can do a very similar job and some are sharper. (Reviews online show that the Voigtlander 35 APO is sharper for example BUT Leica are not designed to be only sharp so it makes sense).

It’s pronounced Fogtlaender not Voightlander.

Thanks Stig, sorry yes someone told me this before. I'm used to hearing "V" as that's how most people say it here and in the US.

If I had the money, yes it would be worth it... but since I don't have the money, no it's not worth it.🥺
