I enjoy watching your reviews because unlike many Leica gear reviewers you actually take very good photos as well as provide insight in the gear you tested. Thank you!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom You do an excellent job of both. Your videos have been extremely helpful for me to save some money and purchase some vintage glass for my Leica M246 that I would not have known about otherwise. Keep up the great work!
It's great to be able to enjoy a gear reviewer's photographs. Yours are always enjoyable. Regarding your 75mm Voigtlander lens, it would've been nice to see your comments on Leica's 75mm f/1.2 lens. Leica's lens is pretty neat, too.
I use the Voigtländer 75mm F1.8 Heliar Classic. I bought it for head shots and concert photos, since my 90mm tele-elmarit is kinda slow for that type of work and only focuses down to 1m. Very happy with the Voigtländer! It does the "classic" rendering very well and sharpness is great in the middle wide open. The bokeh is absolutely wonderful, much like older Leica lenses.
Matt, I finally got my copy of the 75mm nokton today, take some portraits, came home and opened Capture One to check the results: I'm absolutely impressed with this lens, it has the character of the sony 85mm GM (amazingly smooth bokeh) but with some extra punch wide open. I also own the CV 50mm 1.2, but even being one of my favorite lenses and FL, it is not close to this one, imho. The colors, the transition from in to out focus areas, the sharpness are just so good. I wonder if Voigtlander has any other lens of this level or we are talking about the best of the best here. Thanks for your video & recommendation.
Thanks Fed and great to hear you got a copy. Yes if you see my best 50mm Voigtlander video (called best lenses of 2021) the best was this 75 beating all the 50s I tested. It is the best for me. I need to use it more now! Thanks for commenting vs. Sony 85, good to you and I imagine half the size and weight! (I tested a Milvus 85 1.4 in Spain last week on a trip to Spain. I'm not sure if I will ever share the images as only a quick test but man it is so big and heavy! Crazy.. though nice photos!)
I have this lens. I use it on my M10R and SL3. Hard to nail focus on M10R. Much easier on SL3. I love the quality of pic I get. Highly recommended at this price point. I normally use the 50 Lux for indoor portraits and often the Voigtlander for outdoors portrait.
Great! Use a 1.4x LLL viewfinder magnifier on your M10R. See that video. Much easier then. I can hit focus with film and digital M's wide open no problem with this method. (See that video).
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks actually yes I have it and it helps but when I don’t forget it I use my visioflex. Much easier or me and my poor eyes lol
Great review of a lovely lens! I had a Voigtlander 21mm color scopar (I think it was) on a Leica 262 and it had terrible purple bands down the side of the photos. 1. Would that be the lens or the camera? 2. I trust that this lens wouldn’t. I’m considering going back to a Leica M so your input would be valuable 👍🏼
Well, with the illustrated warning about the flare, I would certainly consider this lens, based on this very informative review of yours, Matt. As things stand, a 90mm Summicron which I thought been stolen, reappeared, so I don't need this Nokton. (..sigh of relief ) .. but I refer others to this review. Thanks again. 👌 Cheers, Kevin.
After I got this lens, I never as much as pulled my Leica 75mm from its pelicase. The Voigtlander is technically inferior, not as well built and if you use it on test-charts, it needs stopping down to past 5.6 to hold up. However, it has a quality to it that none of the Leica lenses manages to replicate (just like there are very few lenses that replicate the Zeiss Flektogon 35mm 2.4). On a similar note, I much prefer my Heliar 50mm 3.5 over any of the Leica 50's. and my 35mm 1.7 over Leica's (fantastic) 35mm lenses. All personal taste though, but before people point out Leica is "better", I have not had a single image created with this lens rejected by any of the print media I have used it for.
Im more and more enjoying your video matt! Thanks, got this lens when it was first released but your review reassure me its potential... all the points you mentioned were spotted on
I know by now you are thinking I am stalking you, but I am transitioning from my Nikon Z6 to a SL2S and all my future glass will be m-mounts. All of my primes now are zf.2 mounts including the Voigt 58/1.4 and 40/2 along with some Zeiss zf.2 glass. Voigt glass going forward will be m-mount get adapters for both the Z6 and SL2S.
Hey Gary, as a RU-vidr I love friendly stalkers so no problem! I'm not sure if I said it to you other others but check out MrLeica.com for M glass. Lots of info. (This 75mm is excellent! I later bought it).
Thank you Matt for the review of this lens. I have the previous iteration the CV Heliar 75mm (I think discontinued). 75mm is a between the 2 focal length. I use this lens in some cases. but I am more found of the 90mm. For my main focal lengths i.e. I am using Leica glass 35-50-90mm for my less used focal lengths I am using CV i.e. 21-28-75mm. Regarding rendering these CV lenses are superb and affordable. I played around with the 50mm Nokton f/1.5, 50mm Nokton f/1.2 and 50mm Zeiss Sonnar f/1.5. 50mm is my favourite focal length. My favourite CV is the 50mm f/1.5 so far. The only gripe I have is the knurled focusing ring.
Beautiful portraits in black and white. You are a real artist. I love the rendering of this lens but I am not a fan of it s aspect. As a Nikon shooter , they just delivered a Z version which looks like the old pre AI Nikon with big distance ring in metal. It should perfectly fit my Nikon Zf that I love and gives fantastic opportunities to focus with manual lenses.
There is a 75mm f2.5 Heliar LTM version from Voigtlander, which is discontinued now. It can be found in Japan. I think that one produces very classic looking photos adopted to M240.
It's also an excellent walkabout street photo lens (if you're fine with tight framing and focusing). I've been using it for that on a sigma fp and mirrorless Nikons for quite a bit, and loved it. Another great portrait lens that works swell as a street photo lens is the Fuji X 1.2/56.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Already did! Nice choices! My fav two Voigtlanders are 75/1.5 and 40/1.2, but that's mostly because i do low light / nigth street stuff with them.
Well-done, informative presentation. Thanks! I really do love my 50mm Leica lenses; Summaron-M ASPH, Summicron-M Special Edition “Rigid” replica, with IV/V optical elements, and Elmar-M collapsible, but will readily use Zeiss ZM and Voigtlander VM lenses, in the other focal lengths. I am experimenting with a Voigtlander LTM-mount 75mm f/2.5, found cheaply on the evil bay, and if I like working with this focal length, may well add the 75/1.5 VM Nokton.
Nice lens; great photos! Mine is the older, 1st gen, f/2.5 version which is smaller & lighter weight. Despite some criticisms for its optical system, I’ve found it wonderful for candids & casual snaps. I love the focal length and the Voigtlander build quality values! Nice vid! Subscribed
Those black and white portraits look very nice indeed! My most used Leica lens is a Voigtlander 35/1.7 Ultron, lol. Never have I wanted or needed better quality, and I feel this 75mm would be the same. It's just that I'm covered in the portrait area with 50 and 90mm summicrons, otherwise I'd give this lens a go. Thanks for the great review. Btw, I visited Gdansk twice and liked it a lot: nice to recognise a few buildings ;-)
Thanks Filibert, I only recently discovered th e 35 Ultron (as you may have seen in the video). Love that lens! Yes i'm will you, I like 50s and sometimes use 90s so the 75mm is a bit inbetween. Happy to hear you've discovered Gdansk too! I love it there! :)
Another great video, cheers! I have the f1.8 Heliar Classic which is significantly longer than even the 90mm Summicron (the Canadian one without a tripod bush, a bit shorter than yours) which limits the use it gets. I'm (almost) tempted to make the switch but I'm not entirely convinced by the handling of the Vintage Line 35mm though the 75mm looks less cluttered and the focusing ring less hard on the fingers. I wish Vogtländer would stick with the knurled focusing rings with red/white scales and the bolder engraving that features on most of its VM lenses it wasn't broken and it looks good too.
Thanks and yes it is a great lens and felt normal to use in terms of lens design, that being not different enough to be annoying, though i found the 35mm ok for my use but I know what you mean. Good lens optically.
My favorite lens for head & shoulder portraits on my 35mm Nikon SLR has been the Nikkor 85mm f/1.4. When I bought my Leica M6, I bought the Leitz 90mm f/2 for head & shoulder portraits. My 90mm f/2 has never fully satisfied me as a portrait lens because f/2 is too slow and the lens does not do well at close focus distances. Should I seriously consider replacing my Leitz 90mm f/2 for the Voigtländer 75mm f/1.5?
If you need a faster lens then maybe but I think probably no. My 90 f2 Pre-ASPH Cron is fantastic. See that video if you want to compare results. (In Series 1 M lens review playlist).
Hi thanks, yes excellent lens! :) Maybe turn on notifications if RU-vid is not showing it properly. I think it only shows videos to a % of subscribers.
Matt, I truly admire all your reviews, so many thanks for sharing your experiences and thoughts. At 9:58, that awesome catchlight, did you do it in post? If it’s sooc, please tell us your secret how to achieve that 🙏
Thanks Roland, no I’m not smart enough to make catchlights in post ha. I think you refer to her light coloured eyes. Just pose so light passes through the eyes and they look like that, catchlights reflect whatever is in front of them.
Interesting review, even as a very rare portrait shooter I personally have no practical use for it. For landscape or city shots with a tele lens, I am fine with the The Leica 90/2.8 version I. The wide open portrait photos in this video remind me on photos taken with medium format.
Thanks, I normally record at the high green-amber level (just short of red/ clipping) so I’m not sure it will record much higher. I will try. (I have same issue listening to some other videos from others, even on max I wish I could play it a bit louder)
Thanks. I’ll be honest I don’t rate the Nikkor 1.4 D at all. I bought for wedding photography but it didn’t see much use. The much cheaper Samyang 85 1.4 MF lens is sharper at 1.4 - I remember writing posts on DPreview etc at the time. The Samyang is awesome but slower to use as MF. Voigtlander smaller and easier to handle.
I'm looking for a portrait lens for the new SL3, which one would you choose between: Voigtlander Nokton 50 f/1.2 Voigtlander Nokton 50 f/1.0 Sigma 65mm F2 DG DN Voigtlander Nokton 75mm 1.5
Your videos are a wealth of information - thank you! I'm searching for a lens to shoot portraits of wildflowers and want creamy backgrounds. Would you consider this lens for my needs? Also, any word on whether CV will bring this out in an E-mount anytime??
Hi, thanks! If you want creamy backgrounds from Voigtlander this is probably your best option. If you need wide the 35 f1.2 v3 is great too. I'm not to up to speed on E-mount so not sure sorry.
Hi Matt, sorry to bump up on an old video. Just want to hear your opinion on this 75 vs the Leica 90/2 M pre-asph? Which one do you prefer? Many thanks❤
An objective review with all the appropriate caveats - well done! BTW, if you like a fast 50 that's sharp (enough) in the centre try the Voigtlander 50/1.1; it's no Summilux-killer but ideal for mere mortals who can't afford the Noctilux! KUTGW
Hi Matt Top video top test ... As you know I own one of these 75 mm and I love it specially outside on my M10P for town scene and lanscape scene . I also used it for portrait but I had to use the Visioflex EVF on M10P in order to be able to focus correctly. I also tried it on the CL but a bit long . Anyway I love this lens and will probably use it more on M10. Cheers
Thanks Jerome! Yes I should have mentioned in the video I used the EVF when I could for portraits to focus easier. I found it easier than my 75 APO though..can miss easily with that.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I also love the rendering of this lens wide open (sharp with a little bit of a glow). However, the focus-shift of this lens is quite annoying (at least for me). You can use it at 1.5 or 4.0+ only with the rangefinder. With EVF or a mirrorless camera possibly 2.0 is the best compromise between rendering and sharpness.
how do you decide between the Heliar and the Nokton...... I know, I know... how to decide.... I enjoy street photography and portraiture.... want to use on my M-A and my 10- also have two Voigtlander Bessas..... R2M and R4A- any suggestions-? thank you
Did you take these with the rangefinder or an EVF? I’ve heard lots of reports of focus shift. Did you find that to be the case at all? I’m really interested in the lens, but want to make sure it’ll be consistent.
I used both. EVF is far too slow for some shoots such as the cover photo session. It was freezing cold on the station platform. Models that were better suited to working slower I used it. I didn’t see any issues with the lens but shot it mostly at f1.5-f2
Beautiful rendering, but mechanically imperfect. The grease in the focusing helicoid is too thin (I guess this is the reason?), so when pointing the camera too far up or too far down, the focus starts to creep! Probably not an issue when shooting handheld and still gripping the lens, but a royal PITA for tripod shooting. By the time you've recomposed after focusing, you need to focus again. Fortunately this doesn't happen with the new 40mm f/1.2, which sees about 98% of my use; I only bought the 75mm f/1.5 for variety, and evidently I don't really need it.
Thanks Kelvin, interesting, yes I can see that being a PITA for sure. I rarely use tripods, especially 35mm so i've never seen this. If you buy any more Voigtlanders you can now you MRLEICA at checkout for 5% off :) ..they gave me a code to give to people - RobertWhite website in UK*
Nice explained and summarized review and it seems like a lot of bang for the buck. Now in terms of picture quality for the vintage look ... What are your thoughts on Leica's 75mm summilux? Is the Mandler lens the game changer in the small group of Leica M short telephoto lenses (eg. 75 summicron, 90 summicron asph, and the old 90 summicron of the 70's and 80's) ? Thanks
Really enjoy your channel, considering I'm not a portrait or Leica shooter says a lot about you. Currently using a kippon 75 2.5 on fuji, no a lot of options in this focal length. Anyone shooting this adapted to Fuji?
Hey Matt, great video as always! I've been considering this 75/1.5 Nokton, but I may opt for the Leica APO 90/2 instead. From the sample images shot with this Voigt that I looked, I feel it is somehow a bit flat lens, lacking to provide a good sense of depth and 3D rendering that Leica and Zeiss lenses are giving (especially the 3D pop of the Leica APO 50). I also was absolutely unable to find whether the 75/1.5 Nokton does include floating elements in it's optical design (seen quite a few guys complaining from it going way too soft when focused at closer distances). Do you know whether it does include FLE, or not? What's your honest opinion on the tonal gradations, which contribute for the "juicy" image with good sense of depth? I know you finally bought this Voigt. I still believe the Leica APO 90/2 might be a better choice (I know it is more expensive, but this isn't something that we buy every day). I took the APO 90/2 for a test and it's been absolutely mind blowing. How do you compare it to the Voigt 75/1.5? One of my photos with the Leica APO 90/2 can be seen here: flic.kr/p/22gefcd Thanks!
Hi Alexander, hmm tough question. I've got very decent sharp results from the 75mm f1.5 (even on film)(photo in video) soI sold my 75 APO lens and replaced it. Have been happy with the results. I have the older 90 f2 non-APO which is also great. I've not tried the APO 90. I'm not sure about FLE (check the Voigtlander website. It will be listed if it has it). I only bought mine because it was so good up close wide open. My I just have a good copy.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom, thanks, mate! I may go and buy one to give it a try. No test copy here at the local stockist, unfortunately. Re the FLE - no information on the Voigtlaneder's website.🤷♂
I'm planning to finally get a Leica M6 (used) and the Voitlander 75MM and 28MM lenses for it. I'd like to bulk load Adox CMS 20 II (or perhaps Rollei RPX 25) and Kodak Tri-X. Have you ever tried the Adox CMS 20? If so what results did you have with them?
Hi Steve, nice! I still have some CMS20 in the fridge but it needs different developing so i've not used it get (stilll meaning, I bought it but never used it).
Hi Matt, very intresting video ! I appreciate alot Voigtlander material ! I have a question : Can I use this 75mm on my Leica M8 (as a Tele) ? Greetings, Roger ;-)
Hi Roger, thanks! Yes Voigtlander make some great glass. Yes you can use on any M including the M8. I have used my 75/2 and 90/2 on the M8 for that reason.. great at a wedding!
A very nice review and channel sir. I found another version of this 75mm lens, heliar 75mm f1.8. Can you compare these two lenses? Im having a hard time to choose between these two lenses 😊
Thanks David! Yes the 1.8 is the older lens. I’ve never owned or tested it so I can’t comment but if I compare all my older Voigtlander lenses verses the new ones the latest line up is the sharpest they’ve ever made and often focus closer too meaning better bokeh etc.
Will the Voigtlander Nokton 75mm f/1.5 Aspherical work properly on a Sony a7 series camera (E mount) when an adapter is used? Because Sony uses sensor stacking, will there be any image degradation (e.g., smearing, coma, vignetting, and astigmatism) in the corners at maximum aperture? Thanks?
Most M lenses perform worse on Sony as I understand. Yes corners especially. It should effect longer lenses less so this mine be ok. If you ever come to one of my photowalk/ workshop events you can try mine.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I'll look for it. Cheers. Ive been using Lomo Berlin Kino 400 throuhout this year. Certainly a classic look, maybe a bit grainy and low contrast for me. ATB
Hi I know this is old video, but in case you read comments is there any chance to do review on 7artisans 75mm/f1.25 . It doesn't look bad especially for that ridiculous price
Hi Ptr, If I get the chance to test the 7A 75mm I will share the results. I don't really use these lenses so I have no experience but I know some of the lenses are said to be great for the money.
Nice lens, great review, as usual, but I have no use for a 75. Now I am dithering about an M-9. I am off the rails on Leica bodies. If I pick up the M-9 that is four Leicas in as many months. Stop me before I buy again. This is sexist, but I do not know where that model in the train station is going but I'll get on the same train. She has some "zoftig" magic.
Hi mate, me no sorry but the Nikon Z6 type cameras are getting more popular so i'm sure someone will soon enough. (I think I saw a guy use it on a Lumix S5 like I use)
Not the 75/1.5 yet, but I have used the Voigt 58/1.4, 40/2 Ultron, and I have the 50/2 APO and 35/2 APO on their way. The Voigt 58 and 40 shine on the Z6 which will soon be my backup body as I am transitioning to the Leica SL2S. Thee 58 and 40 are zm.2 mounts, but I have a M to Z adapter coming for the Z6. So, yes the M mounts will work on a Z.
Pointless video. There is no "best" lens - regardless of the type of photos to be taken. The best lens is the one that works for what the photographer is trying to achieve. I suppose the lens caps really contribute to the photos someone takes. As for focal length, it would help (when comparing the size and weight of lenses) to say what the sensor size is comparative to the lens. On Nikon full-frame cameras the lens sizes do tend to be larger, especially when compared to a crop sensor, or an Olympus camera, as examples. What is the actual focal length in terms of when this 85mm is in use? For instance, a 50mm lens intended for a Nikon full frame camera will have an effective focal length of something like 70 or 75mm were it to be used on a crop sensor Nikon camera.
@@alexandermenzies9954 You're dead wrong, people today have an extended adolescence that pushes the beginning of adulthood into the late 20s & early 30s. I'm surprised by your ignorance of this modern phenomenon. You really should think before you make a comment.
Hi yes i shoot guys occasionally too but with a 99% male audience I guess most will want to see girls. And age, models are normally 15-35ish age that I work with.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I'd actually like to see your work with male models. I often struggle with ideas and inspiration for how to work with and shoot males, so if you do come around it, please share. Even if it's just a general video about working with models and tricks for great portraits.
