I had very healthy bees coming out of winter by doing OAV once a month through winter while they were broodless. I don't use it while they have brood. For a good spring treatment then mid summer, I do apivar. For the last treatment before closing for winter, MAQ or apivar depending on how old the queen is.

I've had good luck with Apivar in the past. This year after 45 day treatment with new strips at the recommended dose, I washed 3 to 7 mites in about 80% of my hives in 2 yards. I hope they found a mite bomb somewhere and are not building resistance to Apivar. Broke out the provap 110. Thymol is my next option.

Hi Kamon, I kept bees before varroa, now I have a few colonies because people in my life wanted to learn what I know about beekeeping, Turns out, since varroa, my knowledge is all but obsolete. I've tried formic, oa evap, oa extended release, and even thymol. In many cases I end up queenless. was fortunate to be at my daughter's house after I treated a nuke that originated as a two frame queen builder and became big enough to transfer to a 5 frame nuc, they were booming. As I left the garden I saw what looked like swarm activity. I went back two hours later and there was a swarm on the five frame nuc, I put out out a two frame queen manipulating nuc and they adopted it. Now was there really an extra queen for a swarm or was she absconding. I had given her three weeks to establish laying and I am frazzelled, because every time I treat a relatively new queen the colony goes queenless, in mid August. Here in Sacramento area there is no rain in summer months and no necter flow, I can feed these bees and maybee combine them before winter, but my question is how long does a queen have to bee established before the colony or the queen won't react adversely to oa vapor. because of high temps formic is a no go...lost a queen and therefore a hive at the end of september last year with formic. the new reality of beekeeping is within armslength of defeating. However, I am still breathing and I will give it my best until I'm called home because they make me happy, and they make me sad, and they make me think, and they make me research. I very much appreciate your time and effort in spreading your experience and knowledge. Thank you, tjtaft

I admire, envy and laugh at beekeepers who don’t use a bee sting exclusion suit. I’m EXTREMELY ALLERGIC to wasp sting and very allergic to bee sting so the decision was made for me by my doctor. THANK YOU for covering this subject! The proper application of Oxalic Acid is a ‘delicate’ subject around where I live at the best of times. Those that claim they keep ‘Organic Bees’ and produce ‘Organic Honey’ swear that they NEVER use any product….I have my suspicions as I have seen their trash pile…..I’ll not say more. (Besides that, how do they know that their bees NEVER extract pollen or nectar from a flower on property where pesticides are used? …Hmmmmm)

Kamon have you checked out the propane fired vaporizers on eBay and Amazon? The brand is Varamorus and they're $125 ish. What are your thoughts on a OA treatment rotation of 5-7 days as opposed to using the Apivar strips for colonies that have capped brood?
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 4 года назад
I haven't looked into those units but I may. My thoughts on oav treatment rotation is that I don't trust it on a heavy brooding colony. Even 5 rounds in 21 days has proven ineffective and laborious here.
@popquizzz

Well if I was the owner of that Pro-Vap company, I would have had a replacement setup out to Kamon yesterday or the day before. Him just having that tone at the beginning of the video will cost that company more in sales than they would have lost in the cost of that new unit. One thing we know about Kamon, he is honest and he is level headed. For Kamon to take this position means he has had to deal with enough BS. I've heard rumors of this from many before and suspect that Jason Christman also built his own for much the same reason. Me, well I bought the Gas-Vap and haven't looked back.

@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 4 года назад
Hi Frances, I leave them in for the full 56 days and then remove. Apivar takes a while to kill everything when there is alot of brood in the colony. This is why (with any treatment) it is important to never let the mites build to crazy high levels before treating. I feel like many of the issues folks have with Apivar is using it too late and the virus and mite problems are already out of control

Question Kaymon, I have a hive that I treated with Apivar about 50 to 60 days ago. I removed the strips on August 9th. Ive had to reduce the hive from a 50% drawn honey super over the brood box down to a 5 frame nuc at the beginning of this month. About half of the larva goes bad in the cells. I added a frame of brood and they got a little better but still arent where they are raising all their brood. Been feeding them 1:1 all season. They did at one point in July have hundreds of SHB in there. I killed every single one and now they are completly SHB free. Should I try another apivar treatment? Doesnt look like EFB or AFB people on FB pages have told me. Any suggestions? Thanks for all your content! Ive watched dozens of hours of your videos.
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 4 года назад
Sounds like EFB or the viruses got high before the mites were reduced. If viruses take hold you can kill the mites and still have big symptoms. Especially if the queen was infected. Hard to say from my chair.

@@kamonreynolds I have been watching Michael Bush videos and he claims they should evolve in 2 years. The problem is bee drift. Forrager bees move from hive to hive spreading diseases. You and Laurel make awesome videos and are an inspiration.

What do you think about the effectiveness of Oxalic Acid in a fogger?
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 4 года назад
Hey Yvonna. I am very sceptical to be honest. Oxalic acid degrades at high temperatures and I would be concerned that the fogger would be too hot. This could render all or some of the OA ineffective in mite control. Honestly ALOT more testing needs done on Oxalic acid vapor. What has been recent been done by scientist and beekeepers is showing that it is limited and weak. It does work but it has to be used during crucial period of broodlessness or near broodlessness. The performance of colonies with low mites and those will high loads are extreme and many who don't know what to look for often realize to late that their bees are in trouble. Sorry I don't have a better answer.
