Today I will take you to the streets of Cosmo, where we meet locals, enter their houses and talk to them about everyday reality. Make yourself something to drink and enjoy the ride.
In the late 2005 on a bare plot of land, 25 km northwest of Joburg, Cosmo city was born. Each street was named from different countries of the world from America to Asia. It has developed rapidly into a buzzing multi-class and multicultural urban area with around 90 000 inhabitants. Despite their poverty, these people have managed to build a strong sense of community.

I am feeling grateful for the blessings I have received in my life. A reminder of how so many people live in conditions so many of us will never experience and how lucky we are in the familly/ upbringing we are born into.

It is a wake up call for many of us taking things for granted. So many times we forget and need to be shown, how lives of others looks like for real, to start appreciating everyday reality that we are blessed with. Thanks for commenting.

I really enjoyed this episode. Getting to speak to the people and see how they live really opens ones eyes. You don't need alot if you have community and support. Just knowing your children are safe and fed. A good school and good people around you. One must understand that being from Zimbabwe they tend to send alot of what they have back to their homes in Zimbabwe so they choose to live basic lives here. Thank you for sharing Janet. ❤

Thank you for your constant support, really appreciate your comments. It is exactly the point of this video, we should be grateful for the comfortable houses, possibility to travel etc. But even if one is born into poorer family, less comfortable conditions, truly supportive community is pivotal. I would say- loneliness is the happiness killer, not a basic lifestyle.

Cosmos, we used to ride motorbikes through that area, now it’s home to all these people. Good vibe and characters living there, hopefully people watch till the end to feel the vibe!!!

It amazes me how rapidly Cosmo has developed. The vibe is great, although life can be seen as rough in there, the people maintained close relationships and great community. One of the most buzzing sections I have seen in South Africa. Thank a million for watching!

The living conditions are honestly terrible, but the community is simply beautiful. You have a natural talent to mingle with all sorts of people and invade their houses 😅 well done and waiting for more

That's a good point. Living in such house is challenging, but community makes up for it. The best way of travelling is, to go out there, walk the streets, talk to locals, and be invited to their houses, lives, reality! This brings journey and experiences to another level.

These roofs covered with corrugated iron... The first thing I thought when I saw them was how noisy it must be beneath them during the rainy season. The interviewed lady didn't seem to mention it. Or did I miss that? These people live there poor, but they look happy.
@PandoraPath

They are happy because they are not isolated in the big houses behind the high walls. I think, community is the key in this case. I've never thought about the noise, but maybe it works like a lullaby- constant, repetitive beat helps to fall asleep.

Horrible poverty and no human being should live like that.
@PandoraPath
@PandoraPath Год назад
This is not bad yet. There are far worse places in South Africa. Those houses are not even referred to as "shacks". So imagine...

Which extension is that, in Cosmo City?
@PandoraPath
@PandoraPath Год назад
Could you please specify, what do you exactly mean by "extension"?
@SuperSebza
@SuperSebza Год назад
@PandoraPath so in Cosmo City, there are 11 extensions/sections, from ext 0 to ext 10, I just wanted to know the section of Cosmo City you visited

Sorry but this lady is not south African so you won't get a true reflection of south African
@PandoraPath
@PandoraPath Год назад
The lady lives in SA for a very long time, I guess she knows it a bit. But I'm curious what is your perspective about life in South Africa?
@TheBuyamSellam

@@PandoraPath As you may have noticed, there is a little anti-African immigrant vibe dominant among black South Africans. They are totally discounting the lived South African experience of black immigrants. SAD. It is the ingrained hatred bestowed upon us by the previous regime and it is publicly demonstrated here without shame. Google xenophobia (operation Dudula and others) in South Africa if you are unaware of the tension. Imagine a white American denying the American experience of a Mexican because the Mexican has only lived in America for 25 years and the kids born there are denied the same experiences.
@PandoraPath
@PandoraPath Год назад
@@TheBuyamSellam I can totally relate to your point. I also wonder, how I can't get a true reflection of South Africa because the story is told by an immigrant lady. She lives in Cosmo for a very long time, among South Africans and works for South Africans. You are right, if the main character was Zulu than would be denied the lived SA experience by Sotho etc. Besides even among purely indigenous South Africans from the same ethnic group, everyone will have biased perspective. So what does it mean "true reflection"??? Thank you for your input, I really appreciate it, and hope you will stay with me for longer. Have a good day!
