I think a big reason why we often suck at these games today is a lack of patience. We've been so spoiled by the usability and convenience of modern games that when you go back to play an old one and it doesn't hold your hand at all it becomes very frustrating. When we are kids we just stuck at it until it clicked but now we expect to be able to jump right into a game
I think it's true that a lack of patience plays a big role, but I don't think it's just because the game isn't holding my hand enough. My lack of patience is more attributable to not feeling as motivated to overcome the challenges of the game anymore. I already overcame them 20 years ago, so climbing the hill again doesn't seem worth the effort, and the payoff if I did doesn't seem worth it either. If I take the time to master a 20 year old game (again), I don't have friends or a community to boast about my accomplishments with, so that's a loss of motivation. And the game's graphics are usually bad by today's standards, so any cutscene I see after beating something just feels like a silly letdown - block characters saying three muffled lines of dialogue, and the credits roll. Not worth the effort. But back then, I think we all wondered what was on the other side of the mountain - how awesome might an ending cutscene be, what kind of new unlockable items or characters might there be, can we beat our or our friend's best time, etc. etc. The games were still surprising us, there was so much new to explore, and they still gave us a high to chase. Without the high, what's the point? Nostalgia - that's the only real purpose anymore, and nostalgia wears off pretty fast.
yes motivation and lack of patience is playing a big role ... when im going back to a title, im trying to watch a commecial of it before playing, to put me into the mood of the era of the game in question (if im spelling right)
@@Puck90a oh, defintely. I decided to play through Glover as my first game of 2022 and... oh boy, the difficulty is insane! By the 5th world I had to use cheats for infinite lives because the alternative would be dropping the game altogether.
Really hope you’re doing better! Your videos inspired me to get an Everdrive and finally play a lot of N64 games I missed as a kid. One of my favorite RU-vid channels, looking forward to hopefully seeing more someday!
Hi Glenn just reading the comments I heard you’re not feeling great. Hope you get well soon, We will all be here waiting for your next upload! All the best buddy
Hey Glenn, sorry to hear about your health from your other comments. Just searched the channel wondering if you'd posted anything recently. Hope you get well soon. I enjoy your stuff, but I hope you get better even if you don't post more!
Hey Glenn, I just wanted to say that you have brought many hours of joy and entertainment to me. Your knowledge and complete honesty is something I have always enjoyed seeing. Hope things are alright for you. And if not, I hope they get better at some point. Yours, Andi
Hey Glenn, haven't seen an upload from you in a while. Hope you're well. You are very good at creating an exceptional and engaging comment section on your videos. Which I think is something really remarkable for youtube, as so many comment sections are just dumpster fires. Hope you know that. You have a very interesting and valuable perspective on games too (kinda like snesdrunk does, who I know you're also a fan of). It's one of the many reasons I like your videos so much. I hope (selfishly) that you return to putting out videos, but even more than that, I just hope that you're doing well, even if that means no new videos :)
Hi Glenn. Sorry to hear about your health - whether it be physical or mental - I hope you're back to 100% or as close as you can be very soon. Love this channel - do you still have any issues of N64 Mag? Had to leave the family home when I was 16 and managed to take 5 issues with me that I still have to do this day.
Been binge watching your videos for the past few nights- As a retro games collector you have helped me massively pick up some gems. Hope you are well and do hope you return soon with the reviews. All the best
@@n64glennplant You tell me where to find this Mr. Health and I'll round up a posse and we'll get that son of a bitch. Keep on keepin' on, brother. And don't go chasing waterfalls.
I'd bring the 64 to the bowling alley to use their big screen to play Wetrix.. I can't remember breaking 100 million, but my scores were always above 60 million lol. Crowds would gather and drink and watch.
I'm loving these anthology review Glenn... what an interesting angle to take your channel For what its worth, I hope you know all of your viewers, at least the worthwhile ones, would be completely comfortable and supportive if you branched away from N64... I noticed you seem to have an affinity for big box pc games and movies from the 90s and such. Or just retrospectives on past personal memories, albeit what your comfortable with, would be compelling as well. Honestly you could review a tree stump in the middle of a quiet suburb and you would STILL make it engaging. Can't wait to see where your channel goes my friend. We love you...
@@n64glennplant Jet force Jemini is one of my favourite games from the N64. I haven't played it in maybe 15 years. I have the rare replay box sitting waiting to be opened. I bought it solely for that title (since Goldeneye wasn't on it) Really hoping that game has stood the test of time.
Hello from Belgium :). Really miss this channel, i continue to rewatch your old videos just because i'm addict :P. I really hope you are feeling better, i wish the best for you :). I just bought a physical version of Banjo Kazooie jiggies of time, hope it's good :).
You have inspired us 90's kids Glenn! I've been watching your game reviews and I was also a big fan of N64 magazine back in the day. I've dusted off the old N64 and even picked up some games I didn't get to play back then. Sure the graphics have aged but I'm having an absolute blast. Some brilliant games! Thank you!!
I've been enjoying your videos for years and find myself re-watching them whenever I'm feeling nostalgic for the good old N64 days. Hope you're doing well and all the best wishes.
Hey Glenn. I've watched so many of your N64 vids, and I feel like you've never really mentioned the Gamecube much. Would love to hear how the end of the N64 and the beginning of the Gamecube era was seen from your perspective. Were you sad to see the N64 go?
1080 for sure! I had so many records back in the days I use to rent it. I bought it in a CEX lottery (2 quid, bargain) and I was amazed how bad I was at it. Took me weeks to get back up to speed
Hi Glenn i miss more new videos from you, maybe you can expand to other consoles or games you like, i like your opinion in games and how you delivered it. Greetings from Chile.
@@n64glennplant No worries. Do what you gotta do to take care of yourself. I recently found you channel and have been enjoying your videos. Stay strong friend 👍
You can play it "remastered" on the PC as RVGL and it's as hard as nails but still fun. I've got an XBOX controller mapping keystrokes with AntiMicro as the best found control option.
I tried playing Goldeneye the other day and it felt so alien. That was the only N64 game I had for about 2 years. I played it to death. Now I'm like "huh?"
For whatever reason I never lost the muscle memory for how goldeneye and perfect dark control. It’s fun absolutely slaughtering friends who come over expecting to still be good at them 😂
@@megamob5834 Yeah people don't understand how to play a FPS game with only 1 control stick, always makes me laugh when they can't even strafe fire lol
Hey Glenn, whenever there is an N64 game I'm curious about I always check out your reviews first. I noticed you don't have a review for Paper Mario! I see from other comments that you are dealing with health, I hope you recover soon and that you eat just the right amount of pizza. Also, I really do suck at Warzone now, that was a favorite with my friends in 5th grade...
For me, it wasn't an N64 game, but rather an arcade game call metal slug. I can finish that game with a single credit when I was 9, it was awesome. Doubt I can do it now. Another arcade game that I can finish with a single credit was a light gun game called ghost squad. And I unlock everything from that game. Its an arcade game with a save on card feature. Man I spend so much money at arcade.
Another N64 channel ? subscribed, great content dude. Also, I agree, 1080 Snowboarding is ridiculously hard (i upload some videos of it), especially when trying to optimise runs.
If you haven't already, try pressing the Z button just upon landing to suck in the impact. I forgot that one for like a year and couldn't figure out how I used to play it so well.
@@shaun8062 If you're going for fast times or speedruns, you have to hold Z pretty much the whole time to stay at max speed lol. But yeah using Z and landing "flat" really helps.
@@jazzabighits4473 Right, I knew that part, but at first it seemed counterintuitive to have it held down in the air or landing until i figured it out again.
Mario Kart 64 - all powerslides used to be a muscle memory for me, but when I came back a couple of years ago to get some footage for my channel, I had problems to actually stay on tracks like Choco Mountain or Banshee Boardwalk. How embarrasing. Donkey Kong 64 - I liked this game back in the days, but playing it again last year was an absolute torture. I don't have enough skill and patience for it at all and I will probably never return to it again. I am afraid to go anywhere near F-Zero X, and I beat all cups on every difficulty setting with each character back in the day.
I didn't own DK64 back in the day and I'm currently trying to beat it. It's taking forever, because the game is so overwhelming and confusing. I don't feel like booting it up and it saddens me.
I used to be so good at single player on both GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. But booting up the games nowadays is a sad reminder that I’ve become a shadow of my own gaming self. If I could’ve battled it out with myself as a 14 year old, the younger me would both crush me and laugh in my face. Thankfully there’s still fun to be had. My closest friend and I still battle it out on multiplayer a few times a year, and we’re at about the same skill level 😊 We use the original controllers on the original cartridges. Nothing beats the original 😊
Nah, I sucked at most of these back in the day too. I’ve got a zillion hours into 1080 and never once pulled off the eponymous trick. Also, don’t think we Americans didn’t notice that you used “lost X - O to Canada” as symbolic for sucking at soccer :).
As if there aren't worse countries to lose to, eh? ;) Fun little fact: all the FIFA games are actually developed in Canada. So even if we're less into football/soccer than... well, every other country besides the US, we at least have some credibility, right?
One such game for me is Mischief Makers. I mastered that damn game when I was a kid. I got all the golden gems, I beat the speedrun times... I was crazy good at it. Now? Forget it. Old man Real1 can't do shit
While not N64, I used to be amazing at DKC trilogy as a child. Going back now I can mostly remember where everything is at but it’s far harder than I remember. I’m not sure if it’s my reflexes slowing down or too many JRPG’s but it’s hard to me now.
@@Yarp-xj3rd Yes. I’m not an expert so I’m sure someone will correct me but Japanese Roleplaying games typically have a silent protagonist with a defined name. They usually are turn based and oftentimes start off with a kid or some amnesiac villager and end with killing a god or god level being. They’re heavily story-focused compared to some western RPGs like Skyrim and such. Those as you know are open ended. Great examples are like Wild Arms, Final Fantasy or Grandia.
@@JoshuaJacobs83 ah ok. I understand what you mean. I haven't really played any tbh. My mates used to like the Final Fantasy games but I never really got into them.
One of my greatest gaming achievements : earning all platinum trophies on Ridge Racer 64 when I was like 12 or 13 😅 Now I bet I can barely turn / drift a corner on any of the tracks lmaoo
Don't forget with 1080 that you need to suck in the impact of the landing by pressing the Z button right as you land. That's a huge one people forget. I love it because i love snowboarding and skateboarding in real life, and it makes perfect sense to me.
@@n64glennplant yea, I forgot about how to do that for about a year and would just set the game aside, not being able to understand how I used to be so good at it.
I somehow got through Banjo-Tooie as a kid without rage quitting once. 15 years later on the Xbox 360 port and I'm constantly dying and have no clue why I'm struggling. I rage quit'd a few times and pretty sure I (gently) threw my controller during Grunty Industries level.
While you posted Warzone, I usually choose Attitude to go back to from time to time (it's the better of the two IMO), I have it on PS1...but you're right, I'm always trash at it when I go back. I might build up a little muscle memory as I play, but it's gone by the time I go back. We can go in No Mercy right now though...I'll take on anyone, still play that enough to be good at it lol.
I've never really had a problem with the n64 controller, maybe because I've never really stopped playing the console. I actually kinda miss having unique control schemes for games. Every single modern game has pretty much identical controls if they are in the same genre. That being said, some n64 games are definitely more difficult than I remember them being, especially the driving/racing games. I think that's more to do with bad visibility, blurry graphics and aging eyesight.
The n64 controller sucks for games like Mortal Kombat (not sure why they never released 6 button same size back in the day) but works perfect for Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Wrestling Games etc.
Replayed the THPS games on N64 during the start of quarantine then bought the remaster for switch and then replayed the originals and … yeah it’s harder to go back to these ones nowadays
Git Gud, lol. Yeah, 1080 has an incredibly tough learning curve to it. Having 25-year-old N64 controllers probably doesn't help the situation either. But I'd say Waverace 64 can be pretty tough too, also Vigilante 8 trying to remember where all the weapon and health spawn again.
Oh, sure, blame the controller, why don't ya... just kidding, you're spot on. All of my old controllers are worn-out and you can definitely feel it. I've rather liked the Brawler 64 and that Tribute new version of the Hori pad.
@@n64glennplant I actually learned to repair mine. Little bit of epoxy and sand paper can really do some work for the stick, since the plastic bowl is weaker then what the stick is made of so it wears down faster.
1 Game I have in mind is Twisted Metal 2 for the Playstation. I used to be a problem back in the day with that game, But today, I just end up fumbling my vehicle all over the place. Times were much simpler back then Glenn.
ISS, any one of them, for certain. Back in the day I had both a Nintendo 64 and a Neo Geo CD. I often joke that every time a loading screen popped up on Super Sidekicks 3 me and my brother could finish a match on ISS 98 before the NG CD would start the match. These days I can barely figure out the controls properly on either game and winning a match seems like a Herculean task.
While I haven't played Smash Bros. for the N64 in a while, I know that I won't be nearly as good at it as I used to be. Back in the day, I played that game so much that I was burned out on it and didn't even want to touch it. I'm curious to see how well I'd do with Goldeneye in multiplayer. I can do fairly well in Perfect Dark against Simulants, but I have no clue how well I'd hold up against human opponents. Recently, I was playing WWF No Mercy and going through one of the Championship modes (I don't remember if it was the WWF Championship or not) and on the final match against Vince and Shane, I got my rear end handed to me several times before I beat it. I didn't remember the game being THAT difficult.
@@n64glennplant I'm certainly not someone that would have won any tournaments, but I'd say I was a pretty good player. To be fair, even when I was in my prime with that game, there would be plenty of people out there that would have mopped the floor with me.
@@jazzabighits4473 I currently have three simulants: HardSim, KazeSim, and FeudSim. HardSim is of course on the hard difficulty level, the others are normal. As for the weapon set I use: 1. Falcon 2 2. Falcon 2 (silencer) 3. DY357 Magnum 4. Shotgun 5. Shield 6. Combat Knife Usually I play to 15 kills.
@@Scubagon Oooh interesting settings. Feudsim can be interesting if he chooses you, I also like to put in Judgesim, because he tends to even out the scores by going for the person who is in first place. KazeSim always annoyed me because of its incessant punching even when it has access to weapons, causing screen blur/blindness. Interesting set of weapons, sometimes I play those but I like to play 1. Cyclone 2. Phoenix 3. Superdragon 4. DY357 (usually not LX if bots are on hard or higher because they'll just 1 shot you from across the map) 5. K7 Avenger 6. Mauler Also, sometimes instead of a score limit I play to a time limit. Used to play with my mate but he doesn't like the game that much and he used to just enjoy seeing speedsim sprint past (especially if you change the sim's body to the very tall guy, mr blonde, it makes them move even faster).
I think I've actually gotten better. Although my reflexes may be slower now, I know more about how games work and play more effectively now. In recent years I've beaten games I never could back in the day; DKR, PAL Body Harvest, Turok 1, Top Gear Rally, Nagano Winter Olympics, and Saikyo Habu Shogi. Currently I'm working on finishing Ucchannanchan's Flaming Challenge: Irritating Electric Stick. On the other hand, now that I have my own children I have much less time to play so I don't really go for 100% any more.
Tony hawk is definitely the epitome of this problem. I used to be a wizard at it on GameCube. But I recently tried the Nintendo 64 versions and got utterly destroyed. Admittedly the controller does suck for it, and playing without reverts or manuals is near impossible. But I also played through the Nintendo switch version and was still a long way away from my prior expertise.
I love the N64 but I am not very good at most games. The few games I am good at, Super Smash Bros and Mario Party 2, I still play to this day often. I tend to really enjoy the multiplayer aspect of N64 gaming over single player, it’s where the console really shines!
I've been playing 1080 for a few months now, whenever I go over my parents house, and can reliably beat hard but still get smoked by Deon Blaster at some point on Expert. One thing i like doing is starting match race and not touching the controller and slowly fall to the bottom, which is how i snowboard IRL. It's very ZEN. I wish I could find if clothes from that game actually existed & manufactured by Hilfiger. I have vague memories of something at Macy's but the internet has been useless.
GoldenEye would be on my list. When I was young I completed it on 00 Agent and unlocked all the cheats. Friends gave me their carts to unlock cheats like invincibility for them (before the button combos were revealed). Recently, I was stuck on Bunker 2 00 Agent for about a week, and now I'm stuck on Streets 00 Agent.
Tony Hawk games are pretty much the only games i am still good at. I recently bought my first Sega Dreamcast and bought THPS 1 & 2 ports on there ( i was always a playstation guy).
little off topic cause its gamecube, but F zero GX was one of those games i coudnt finish on the master difficulty back in the day when it came out (i was around 16 when it came out). i came back to the game as a 22 year old (young adult) to kick the games ass once and for all and could finally enjoy the AX cup, the unlockable only available when one finishes all cups on master difficulty.
The only N64 game I'm worse at today is F-Zero X, specifically the Death Race mode. I used to have all the time in the world to beat my records. I got my time somewhere under 1m 20s. Now I can't get anywhere near that and I no longer have the will power. My huge backlog on PC needs me.
I'm so glad you mentioned Ridge Racer 64! I bought the game recently and couldn't believe how well it played. I suck at the game as well but love that it was released on the N64! Another game that seems harder to me nowadays is Mario 64; tring to remember the red coin locations and decipher the riddle goals for each star is hard!
I swear it'd be easier to list the games that I don't suck at now compared to back in the day. You've listed a lot of the ones I immediately thought of, like Ridge Racer 64, Tony Hawk and 1080. And Guru Larry mentioned Waverace. Even Mario 64, which I think holds up well, I still don't quite have the finess my younger self did. I could do the triple/wall jump trick to get on top of the castle early, but tried for hours recently to no avail. It's just gone. Cruis'n Usa is another one like that, where it's still fun, and the basic gameplay still holds up, but I know I was better at it, and corners that would've been easy for me to breeze through back when now give me trouble. All this modern fidelity gameplay and fancy Forza rewind magic has spoiled me, and dulled my 64-bit edge.
Wrestlemania 2000. My brother and I could crush the cpu in handicap matches on the hardest difficulty no problem. Now when we have a tag team match together the AI makes a fool of us.
@@n64glennplant I'm sorry for that :( I Hope your health gets better :)

For me it is Top Gear Rally. I remember unlocking everything in that game, and now I can't even finish the first track without my car looking like a crushed soda can
sup i saw u at xbox showcase chat, i remember watching your videos yearrrs ago. anyways im pissed about no Banjo Kazooie. RARE sucks, they literally have done nothing for xbox besides sea of theives in 20 years. what a waste.
@@n64glennplant thanks for the reply! i still go back to your older reviews often. but RARE as a company infuriates me. Nintendo should at least buy the BK ip back. Microsoft and RARE being tone deaf to BK fans is so aggravating! I know most old RARE members are gone.. but as a BK fan ive learned to tone down expectations.. but i was really expecting it this time.. they missed a huge chance to make a game after Banjo Kazooie got into smash ultimate 3 years ago, im just accepting it, we will never get any remasters or banjo threeie... i could see RARE remastering Nuts and Bolts though 🤣
I used to be godlike at Goldeneye and Turok. Not anymore. FPS controls on N64 are way to cumbersome for me nowadays. Modern Twin stick controls have spoiled me.
@@xyrzmxyzptlk1186 The first time I played Halo, I insisted on using southpaw controls and inverted aim, to match what I was used to in Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and JFG! I use normal aiming controls on any Xbox/PS controller now, but I still adapt naturally to that N64 layout as soon as I pick up the controller.
I forget what Turok has, but Goldeneye has something resembling twin stick controls: setting 1.2, named Solitaire. You can walk with either the D-pad or C buttons, and aim with the stick. Using this setting, you can also set up an emulator with the sticks and triggers swapped around, so that it's L to aim, R to shoot, left stick to move, and right stick to aim. Only real drawback is that it obviously doesn't use real analogue for walking- you're stuck with just 8 directions.
Bomberman 64 The second attack. Oh my word. I could beat the game without dying one time and now I run out of continues before I make it to the third boss. On the flip side however, I used to struggle when I was playing some of the Mini games in the Zelda games that I blew through without much issue now.
I really don't have troubles getting back into games like F-Zero X and Super Mario 64, i think that the controls hold up and that i hold up in the games, maybe because i was a VERY late N64 adopter, but at the same time, those games have many instances for you to start from scratch and get better at them, for instance, when i want to do just a quick game of F-Zero, i just do Death Match, probably my worst score, but a good place to start.
