🚆 Less traffic on the streets: Pulling cargo through the alps (Cab Ride Switzerland | Spiez - Weil)

Switzerland is a small, landlocked country in the middle of Europe. It is an important transit country for many goods through Europe and specially the alpine corridor is a bottleneck. A base tunnel through the alps for street traffic does not exist. Everything has to drive up, through one of the many tunnels and downhill again. Truck after truck, each one carrying only a small amount of goods and burning fossile fuel. This is where the so-called "UKV" trains step in: Whole semi trailers and containers are loaded onto pocket wagons in specialized terminals, combined into a big train and pulled through multiple countries, including the crossing of the alps. Only electric locomotives are used for this task, making it not only very environmentally friendly, but also massively reducing street traffic, train by train. It also creates a benefit for the truck drivers: They are no longer driving multiple days through Europe, stuck in traffic jams and polluting the air. Instead, it takes one truck to deliver a trailer to the terminal and another one, hundereds of kilometers away, to take the trailer to its intended destination. And the truckers spend more time at home!
Join me on this UKV train, which I took from Spiez in the Bernese alps to Weil am Rhein in southern Germany. The train started in Gallarate (IT) and will remain unchanged up until Geleen (NL). A distance of almost 900km on the streets, dozens of trucks simply gone - because of this one train. And there are many more like it, every day on multiple routes! A simple, but very effective concept.
Locomotive: Re 486 (Bombardier TRAXX)

You really get the feeling that this is a heavy freight train and not a lighter commuter train. You feel that it’s a powerful locomotive pulling a lot of weight. Fantastic. Many thanks.

As a retired rail-technical from the UK, who first rode Swiss railways in 1958, I was fascinated by this cab ride. Why? Travelling on NO high speed lines, penetrating the vast yards of Muttenz, plus the gradual change from Swiss rail infrastructure to that of DB was both a revalation and a recall of long-forgotten memories. I have clicked on Subscribe, and look forward to more - on other routes. MERCI VIELMAL!

Very enjoyable watch, one thing that caught my attention was the this was first video of a train ride through Switzerland that this train unit passed by so many other freight trains over the course of fairly short train route. In many countries a lot of fright service is restricted to overnight hours so interfere with passenger service so it was nice to see so many other freight train units out and about during the course of this video. This train wasn't even shunted once to a siderail to allow a passenger train to overtake it.

This is one of the north-south lines that are heavily frequented by cargo trains. A lot of them run during daytime, it's not an unusual sight here. Freight also rolls at night, when passenger trains are less frequent.

Switzerland is such a beautiful country and the people are quite nice and friendly, I was there just two years ago and we really enjoyed ourselves immensely. Plus there a number of people that have a wonderful take on life, we happened upon a gentlemen who owns a place in the town of Itingen not far from the city of Basel that has put a couple of large Spiderman figures on his place. We stopped to look at these figures and he came up to us and was explaining his like for Spiderman, we had a real wonderful time talking with him and real gem of a guy. Switzerland is the one country in Europe that the people should have a liking toward full size pickup trucks because of all the camping and farming spread throughout the country, we tried to rent one while there without luck.

Great as always. Some new aspects as well! It seems confusing the change of signs I respect to their positions. In Swiis there are a lot of changes then left traffic and then right . Near the Basel border at a sudden the signs are on the right side. A flexible mind is prescription I guess.
@RailwayEmotions

Signals in Switzerland are on the left, in Germany on the right side. It takes less of a flexible mind and more exact knowledge of the rules and regulations. Confusing a signal can be very dangerous.

Great and professional video as usual! 660 meters or 2165 feet in length. I am assuming that’s an average freight length for a large run or delivery in Switzerland. In the US freight (goods) trains can average around 2000 meters or 6562 feet. How many cars were in this run and was it exclusively intermodal?
@RailwayEmotions
@RailwayEmotions 2 года назад
Maximum length for freight is 750m. It can be anything between one single car up to said 750m. 660 is therefore on the longer side. Our country is small and does not allow for extremely long trains, they wouldn't fit into stations. There were 24 cars and all intermodal without exception.
@aghauler1964
@aghauler1964 2 года назад
I live in the US central plains, My home is 75 feet from the union Pacific east west main line, I often see two trains linked together with mid train DPU and rear DPU with 3 to 4 General electric AC locomotives in the lead, often these consists are over 2 miles in length, Thank you again for sharing.
@RailwayEmotions
@RailwayEmotions 2 года назад
We are also able to combine two trains into one, however it is very rarely used and the 750m limit still persists. Such a train could fit nowhere, neither at the start of the run or the terminus, nor somewhere in between. Freight trains are often put aside in bigger stations and then overtaken by faster trains. It simply would not work with longer trains.
@charlescrawford7039
@charlescrawford7039 2 года назад
@@aghauler1964 I live on the East Coast and the trains are shorter. Sometimes state regulations require certain length limits to minimize impact to grade crossings. Also older freight yards and the rail traffic levels in the East make super long trains difficult to deal with. Still, the trains with DPU ( distributed power unit ) configurations seem to be getting longer every year.

Are you sure this train ends at Geleen (NL)? Geleen has no container terminal only a terminal at Chemelot which deals with chemical products. Also the positioning is a bit awkward cause Geleen has no yard to split trains. At Venlo there is a freight yard to split trains, are quite a number of container terminals. So split trains, eventually combined with others, can go to different locations in the Netherlands, Belgium, etc. Also containers and trailers can be collected and distributed throughout the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany.

@recon5712
@recon5712 2 года назад
@RailwayEmotions
@RailwayEmotions 2 года назад

Your questions cover an entire topic in train drivers school, so I can't break it down into a few words. We obviously know what we will be doing during our shift and generally walk from and to our trains in the yards. We have to know our stations and yards very well. No, taxis are not paid for. Either you take a passenger train home or if there is none, you walk, cycle, drive your own car... Whatever suits you best

How many drivers lost their jobs, jobs that fed their families. Thats the big problem here. It costs the drivers their livelihood, but it puts more money into the coffers of these companies.

STOP using these ridicules wide angle lenses on your camera It spoils the picture. Look at the edges of the video frame. The picture becomes distorted, bend.

And what percentage of the picture is affected? The rest of it is OK. To comply with your whinge, we would have a more constricted viewing field. You don't like it? Go away!
