When I attended the World Cup in France, there was hardly any South African supporter’s merchandise and memorabilia available to buy at World Cup stores. You couldn’t find a Springbok jersey, but for all other countries there were plenty of options. When we asked the shop attendant where the South African stuff was, she said they were instructed to remove it once they heard South Africa had drawn to play France in the Quarter Final. It shows how petty they are.

As a South African living abroad, I can tell you that Cheslin is definitely on the money with his take. I work with people from different countries from all over the world and honestly I'm not surprised by the international perception of South Africa as an "African" country being underdeveloped and unworthy of greatness. We've had decades of organizations like the UNICEF putting out ad campaigns to help the "starving children in Africa" with flies flying around some malnourished kid. These kind of images are perpetuated throughout popular media and most people have never seen how developed we actually are. I've seen people in families way more affected by poverty in their own countries, use the "starving kids in Africa" line on their kids, while thinking "nah, we're good, lady" but the ignorance is not their fault. Granted, we do have poverty, as there is in any country in the world, but the image that has been created internationally of African countries being undeserving of greatness because we're always in need of assistance from the great first world countries is something that is very obvious when observing the opinions of my international friends and colleagues. (I can only talk about what I've personally experienced)

I fully support Cheslin because-1) Boks were Purposely thrown into the toughest pool. 2) This pool forced the Springboks, whichever way, to the toughest Quater and Semifinals thinkable. 3) Then had to play the three toughest teams in the tournament while these three teams had soft games which gave them time to practice and have a 'rest'. 4) An absolute, as usual hostile European media and hysterical hostile crowds at all the games. Before the tournament, when I looked at the pools and made some calculations I said to my son "This is a typical english empire concoction to get the Springboks away from any chance to win this WC Trophy"! But The Whole Proud Springbok Group and our prayers just carried the Final Day

I would disagree. Our rugby infrastructure remains world class. It's evident in our school rugby. I think the world is against us simply because we have so much more power up front than anyone else and that is hard for some men to come to terms with.

I am a South African living abroad and the term 3rd world country is not a true reflection. The so-called first world countries is so far behind on everything and whoever does these classifications should visit SA and compare to the rest of the world. My blood is green and will not substitute my citizenship for any other country.

South Africa is a DEVELOPING mid income country, has loads of poverty but also loads of excellent schools competing in mostly British sporting codes as well as strong domestic competitions. I also believe NZ would have accepted the result if it were Ireland, France or England. First they said we won the 1995 WC because their team was poisoned. Us South Africans are too sensitive. For every person that spews abuse on social media there is another who is positive and 98 others who are positive but silent or simply just doesn't care either way. I've seen plenty of us throw negativity the other way as well. Although I am sure Rassie and co see the use in the "us against the world" mentality in a motivational sense. As far as SA being a 3rd world country, not in a rugby sense. Our infrastructure and development systems are right up there in the rugby niche.

I played for 26 years, A and B division, I'm an American. I love all international teams, even the USA (all of our best athletes are millionaires so we will always lose to the rugby powerhouses) and am disgusted by this story.
