Good day Miss Jen! I am one of your followers on RU-vid and Facebook May I ask something, we are on 12th day on potty training. My almost 4 year old daughter issue is bladder control, she says or shouts pee after or during the process of urination. She can sit and pee, no issues on sitting on the potty. A little background my daughter is autistic level 1, she struggles on receptive language, but follows simple instructions and commands. She still drinks milk before bedtime (bottle). She's on pullup diaper during nap and bedtime only. Any suggestions as a professional how to successfully train her to urinate before it's too late.

Planning on starting with my 2 year old. He lets me know when he has to #2. I’m just going to be sure to ask him to potty every now and then for #1 until he learns . Wish me luck. If he isn’t ready , I’ll try again at a later time. I know pressure doesn’t help and only harms the process 🤞

Congratulations on starting your potty training adventure! 🥈🏆🚽⭐🧻🏅 Thru the years I've learned that potty training is not one-size-fits-all. There is no magical "sign" that a child will be like: “Hey Mom I’m ready now! I can totally control my bodily functions and be a big kid. I wanna start using the toilet now!” 😅 Don't worry if your child doesn't show "interest" or check off every box in the "signs of readiness" list. This list is just a general guide to help give you an indication of where your child is with their behavioral and physical readiness. *Note: a child doesn't necessarily need to show ALL the signs on the every "list" out there. Those are more of a general guideline. In fact some kiddos never have these behaviors or show any signs of readiness at all. And some toddlers will completely resist the potty altogether. If your child is showing even just one slight indication that they might be interested or becoming aware, its good enough reason to start preparing for the potty training adventure! Since some kiddos might never show interest nor any signs of readiness or no awareness at all - it's really up to the parent to determine what is the right age to begin the potty training process to keep them on track to meet those milestones so that they'll be accepted into day-care, pre-school, pre-K and kindergarten school around age 3 or 4. So ultimately its the parent who know what is best, not the child. ⭐ Look for these signs of readiness! This helpful potty training video explains the checklists of indicators that your child is ready - as well as how and when to begin the process of potty training adventure. You'll find so many valuable tips and helpful ideas in my potty training videos! Here's the link for you. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--TrGQi7r8gI.html

You're videos are great! So much good advice. Just started potty training my little girl (about to turn 3) and she has been much more challenging than both of my boys. I have a couple of questions. 1. Is it best to use pull-ups at night or go all out? 2. How soon before bed time would you stop drinking? 3. When having them take a potty break, how long do you have them sit and try before getting up after no success?

As a professional potty training coach, I usually approach sleeping/night time potty training vs daytime potty training as two separate milestones. Since bladder control isn't something we can train or "teach" a sleeping child. It kind'a gradually progressively happens on its own over time. Staying dry thru sleeping, naps & night time potty training usually comes later in the potty training process. Here's a quick video for you that explains the stages & steps of night time potty training and when you can expect to transition from bed time diapers/nappies to pull-ups to wearing underwear for bed time. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fSrqvG3BMXo.html

However he only goes with his pants and diaper on. As soon as we take it off he does not want to go to the potty. Does one still keep diaper on when training and how to one get him to go without pant and diaper on. Thank you

I just suscribe to your chanel, I'm a first time mom and potty training has been one of the most challenging things for me. My little one is 2 years 3 mnths old and every time she in the way to poop or pee, I say let's go to the toilet, let's take out your diaper, she just screams a lot and run away, she even said "let's go poop" but when I said it, she always runs away, she rather pee/poop on the floor or when I put a new diaper. I'm starting to feel bad. 😔

👋😉 Hello. This is pretty common actually. Self initiating or speaking up and telling an adult might take some time to develop for many toddlers. Even for the most chatty, talkative, proactive, self aware & verbally communicative kiddos, it can take months before some kiddos will self initiate or show any indication that they're aware they need to go. That or they just stop all together once they become bored as the novelty wears off. Plus kids are just really good at waiting til the last minute when their bladder is full to maximum capacity cuz they're ignoring their bladder urges. In my 39+ years of potty training experience I've learned that most toddlers probably won't verbally request or "tell" you they need to go potty until its too late... some kids dont make the bladder brain "connection" until they're a bit older. Many kiddos dont start to practice true toileting independence until around 4, 5 y.o. Every child is different. Heck I've known 7 year olds who still need prompting and reminding! Self initiating or self prompting and being proactive with their own toileting schedule is a skill that typically develops later/older. So until they master that, it will still the parent's job to be in charge of the potty break on a predictable schedule, setting timers and monitoring the child's bladder capacity and fluid intake. Being especially aware and attentive while the child is playing, busy, distracted, when most potty accidents happen. Have you given any thought to trying a potty watch? I love 'em for helping a child to stay on a predictable timed potty schedule! *It also helps them to start learning how to self initiate and be a little more proactive rather than reactive. As a professional potty training coach I've always found a potty watch to be VERY helpful tool because it creates a sense of accountability for the child to take themselves to the potty. You can set it for very 30, 60, or 90 minutes. Here's a quick video about the benefits & effectiveness of using a POTTY WATCH and when to introduce it as well as how to use it for specific timed increments throughout the potty training process! 😊👍 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M3zDFj9ab6g.html Try a potty watch! Kiddos like the responsibility of being in control of their own body, their schedule and when they go potty. 💗 Pink apple watch style: amzn.to/4bmXTz3 💜 Purple watch: amzn.to/4cz3anb 💙 Blue apple watch style amzn.to/45wIVnP 💚 Green watch: amzn.to/49gbhDq 💛 Yellow watch: amzn.to/4fzXwmT 🧡 Another cute style: amzn.to/42EMwil *Especially helpful for those strong willed kiddos that insist on doing things their way and on their terms. The potty watch kind'a makes it feel like its all "their" idea! 🤫😉 Its effective because its the watch telling them "its time" to go use the potty... not Mommy who's constantly asking and bugging and prompting and pestering and nagging them to go potty. This takes the pressure off mommy always having to be "the bad guy" all the time. I've been potty training toddlers for 4 decades. So as you can imagine, I've tried every gadget & method in the book. I always have good luck with potty watches! Worth every penny in my opinion. Seriously. They're sweet, they're musical & flashy and it makes potty time FUN for your toddler-in-training!! It's a new sparkly bling and a colorful toy as a potty training REWARD for your little cutie and its a very helpful tool for YOU! Might be worth a try?? 💗 A potty watch is a very helpful tool for successful potty training and they come in so many colors & different styles! Some styles have different timer settings: 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes. Some potty watches have a vibrate mode to turn off the music chimes. (ideal for at pre-school) Some have a replaceable battery vs a plug-in charger. Let your little cutie pick which color & style! Keep the watch long after potty training and use it for other so many other things! A potty watch can also help a child to time how long they should be sitting on the potty and when to get off so they're not sitting for long periods of time. ⭐ BONUS: These watches come in handy for all kinds of other activities, chores, timers for a count down to bed time, brushing teeth, play time, toy sharing & turn taking, watching shows, limit screen time, bath time... etc. Sooo many uses!! ☺👍

Jen - this is so cool. First time mama here what age should we start and what if there is new baby on the way.🙈
@NannyKnowledgewithMissJen
@NannyKnowledgewithMissJen 2 года назад
Every child is different and they all learn at their own pace at different ages. Just like other baby milestones such as learning to crawl or walk and talk at different times/ages, they learn how to use the potty at different times/ages too. However, most children are developmentally & cognitively ready to begin potty training between 18 months and 2 years. You'll have your hands full when the new baby arrives! So try to think of unique & different ways to make sitting on the potty a fun exciting experience that will make your toddler feel included, involved and a part of whatever you're doing with your newborn at any given moment. 👶 Maybe place a little toddler potty in the tv room and play areas so your toddler associates the potty with toys, fun, playing & watching some favorite shows - but most importantly: you are all together in the same room playing and spending time with one another. Maybe thats where snack time can happen while mama feeds the new baby? Read your toddler some books while sitting on the potty! Just try to think of new and fresh ways to make sitting on the potty a positive fun happy "shared time with baby sibling" experience. Rewards, praise, silly potty songs, positive reinforcement, bribes, earn ipad/screen time, blow bubbles, a popsicle, a potty picnic party with mommy and new little baby. Things to keep your toddler busy (distracted) while sitting and waiting for something to come out, with the goal that your toddler will gradually become more and more comfortable sitting for longer stretches of time .😊 Maybe bring a coloring book or stickers, a favorite stuffed animal. Practice some imaginative role playing by setting a teddy bear or stuffed animal on the toddler potty to have a turn. Make the pee-pee pssss sound. Then say "Good job Teddy! Yay! Look, your teddy went pee-pee on the potty!" Then give the stuffed animal a reward or sticker or "treat" to show your child what can be earned!! 😋 Here's the link to part 4 if you want to skip forward to the "how to start getting prepared" segment. I wish you good luck! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5I-PSudPWYg.html

My toddler is 3 1/2 and has been withholding her poop to the point it gets hard and will fight me to go sit on the potty. The Dr suggested a Meralax cleanse and that this is a behavior issue! What can I do? Rewording her is not an option because she is spoiled lol we did bare butt and it worked for pee but cried until I put a pull up on her to poop but she will stand up and and crossed her legs and grunt to hold in the poop😩 what can I do if this is a behavior issue?

🥺 Aww so sorry you're going through this challenging struggle. I hear you Mama! This potty training stuff is HARD! Especially the poo part. It sounds like fear of release. Or it could be a control thing. Privacy issues. Even just one painful poo or negative potty experience can cause major setbacks and delays. Mastering the skill of pooping in a potty or toilet can take some kiddos a little longer to get used to! (...aaaand lots of practice) before they eventually become comfortable pooping in a seated position sitting down on a potty or toilet vs their familiar standing or squatting posture. Hang in there! I can offer some helpful advice! At this age/stage it will probably require some redirecting and reprogramming to unlearn this behavior. You'll want to determine if this is behavioral vs biological. Psychological or physiological. This is what I help families with who are struggling with your similar circumstances. This is a fixable issue, but the longer it continues - the harder it will be to unlearn. I offer private one-on-one personalized potty training coaching and long term support if you'd like some guidance and support to help you navigate thru this hun. Ive been potty training toddlers and older children for over 39+ years so as you can imagine I've helped many families navigate thru this. I'm here to help in any way I can. He is currently doing them in a nappy and refuses to even sit on the potty with a nappy on and do it. We have tried making it physical by saying goodbye to the the poo in the toilet. Bribing him and being positive. But I feel like I'm getting no where. He does have a poo window where he will go do poos between a certain time after a day at kindergarten. But I just worry he won't be ready for school next year.

Hello, my son will be three in June but has a speech delay and he doesn’t tell me when he has to go. Any tips or tricks for speech delay children ?
@NannyKnowledgewithMissJen
@NannyKnowledgewithMissJen Год назад
👋😉 Hi Christina! Luckily, a child doesn't necessarily need to be able to speak (nor hear) to learn a new life skill like potty training. Non verbal and non hearing (even non seeing) babies learn potty training all the time - without ever speaking or hearing a word. As long as a toddler can understand simple words, requests and commands they can learn to use the potty! Self initiating and independent toileting are skills that typically develop later in the potty training process. Toddlers-in-training still in the early stage require hourly prompting. This phase can last for several weeks, sometimes months. Heck! I've known 6 year olds who still need constant reminding! 😉👍

Do rewards ever cause problems? As in, the child then will only use the potty as long as the rewards keep coming? Don't you have to wean eventually? I know potty training can be done without rewards, but I imagine it takes longer since they probably don't make the connection as quickly without treats. The reason against the rewards is it can cause power struggles (so I have heard). Can you share your experiences with this? Do they ever "forget" about the rewards? How long do you use treats? Is it just in the beginning or do you continue with each potty success until mastery?
@roar44879
@roar44879 Год назад
@@NannyKnowledgewithMissJen Hi Miss Jen, thank you for your response, but I believe you linked the wrong video. It doesn't mention what treats to use or how to tapper off. I am looking for ideas for treats. I tried stickers, and he's not motivated by them. I also tried giving him a piece of his favorite cheese (which he loves but apparently not for potty), and he just played with it. Let me just share some background without hopefully making it too long. I actually started pottying him around his first birthday, not with intentions to "train" but I read more about EC and thought I would give it a try. If it didn't work, I could just stop. To my surprise, we had a lot of success, even though it was just part time and a diaper for the rest. He's now 21 months, and I think he's capable of using the potty full time. We did away with diapers, including naps and night time-- I thought this was the clearest message that we aren't using diapers anymore. He already was dry through naps, and after 3 nights into potty training, he was dry overnight as well, followed by a huge morning pee. So, as odd as it sounds, I think it's safe to say he is sleep trained (as long as dinner isn't salty, in which case, he does drink more, and I find that his pants are wet). I took the approach of putting him on the potty whenever he starts to pee or poo, and by the afternoon the first day, he even peed in little potty all on his own. He has self initiated some other times as well. But, here is the thing: he's not verbal, so the prompting hasn't been working. The whole "I see you need to pee, let's take a potty break" or "Hey you had a lot to drink and it's been a while, time to pee in the potty" just doesn't register. He doesn't fight the transport to the potty, either. I have stuck with that method because again, telling him "let's try to pee pee in the potty" just doesn't register, and honestly I feel like he has the hang of it, but doesn't know that pee and poop should always go in the potty. That's why, when he does initiate, which he does, but not consistently, I was thinking of rewarding that specifically to enforce that behavior. I feel like the fact that he doesn't talk makes it feel like it's still EC rather than potty training, because I am essentially providing potty opportunities when he has to go or just waiting for him to start going, then transporting him. Maybe it will be easier once he (hopefully) starts talking, because other than that, he's been overall compliant with the training-- no tantrums or anything. His speech therapist says his language impairment is on the mild end, so I am hopeful this "language explosion" that I keep hearing about will come soon. I honestly viewed potty training as a way to bond, as I found it less stressful as time went on, but I would like to wrap up and just be done (it's already been several long days). Do you have experience potty training non verbal kiddos? Granted he is still under 2, but honestly thought at 15 months, his language would take off any day now, and here we are 6 months later. Imitation has improved but not speech.

💗 Awww ... I understand. A three year old still in training might seem a little bit delayed... but dont get discouraged. I've trained 5 year olds who struggled with potty training and even 12 year olds who had special needs. So the age rage can differ from child to child just like learning to talk, speech development and crawling/walking. Every baby is unique and will learn at their own pace. ⏰ Just keep working on the hourly alarm schedule and have her sit on the potty every hour on the hour. Be very consistent so she will learn that mommy is not gonna give in! Mommy is going to have her sit down every hour (whether pee-pee comes out or not.) She will eventually get used to the concept "we do this every day, multiple times a day". This will help her establish a routine and structure, it will teach her a habit she will be doing every time she hears her special potty alarm song. 🎵 Hang in there Mama! Check back for new videos. You'll get notifications when fresh content is posted!

@NannyKnowledgewithMissJen
@NannyKnowledgewithMissJen 2 года назад
😊 Hi Celina! Thank you for your comment! Candy, treats & sweets can be very helpful as a reward system for the potty training process. Even just one tiny chocolate chip or mini m&m can render a potty success from even the most stubborn toddler! But eventually over time you'll want to gradually taper off the food rewards. Maybe only offer them for a more challenging potty requests they struggle with. For example begin to offer treats only when you KNOW your little cutie has emptied their bladder completely. To encourage them to get out every last drop of pee-pee before bedtime or before leaving the house for an outing. Situations when you really need them to perform on command! 🤣 I talk about this and explain how to effectively do this in my potty training video: Let us know how it goes for you!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-goaxRLXdM4w.html

👶 Hi Faiza! Thank you for your comment! ✨ Try to think of fun ways to make sitting on the potty a positive fun happy experience. Offer rewards like a special new popsicle, lots of praise, silly potty songs, positive reinforcement, bribes, earn ipad/screen time, count how many drips come out, a potty picnic party with mommy!! Bring a coloring book, stickers, blow some bubbles. Things to keep your toddler busy (distracted) while she sits and waits for something to come out. With the goal that she will gradually become more & more comfortable sitting for longer stretches of time. 🧸 Maybe let her bring a favorite stuffed animal/teddy bear to hold and talk to (a potty partner!) You can practice some imaginative role playing by setting teddy bear or stuffed animal on the toddler potty to have a turn. Then say "Good job Teddy! Yay! Look, your teddy went pee-pee on the potty!" Do a celebratory happy potty song & dance then give the stuffed animal a reward or sticker or "treat" to show your child what SHE can earn!! 😋 Hang in there Mama! 💖 Hi autoprincess! I appreciate your comment! This all sounds pretty normal actually. Potty training regression & withholding is common. When given the option - most littles will always say: "No mommy. I don't need to go potty. I already went potty!" Sometimes they'll cry, scream, throw a fit or run away (or hide). They dont yet realize going potty is something they're going to be doing all day, every day, multiple times a day ... forever! For the rest of their life! Not just one-and-done! To a toddler-in-training, a potty break is a tedious chore or maybe its just boring. Stopping what they're doing to get up and go to the potty is an inconvenience and an interruption. They're too busy playing and focused on having fun. We need to "tell'' a child its time to go potty...rather than "ask" if they feel like they need to go potty. They almost always say "NO". They might not yet recognize what that "urge" in their bladder feels like. ✨ Try to think of fun ways to make sitting on the potty a positive fun happy experience. Offer rewards like a special new popsicle, lots of praise, silly potty songs, positive reinforcement, coloring book, stickers, blow some bubbles., bribes, earn ipad/screen time, count how many drips come out, a potty picnic party with mommy!! 👋☺ Hi Frances! Awww... its natural for a toddler to be hesitant or confused or even afraid of trying new things and adjusting to a new routine to learn a life skill such as toileting. Are you offering a reward system? I always have the best success using a reward system. First: For just sitting on the potty in the beginning and then eventually a reward "after" potty success. Stickers, small candies or a tiny toy. Earn screen time . A hug? Something your child will WANT to earn and work for. Toddlers-in-training need incentive to use the potty. They need something that'll make them want to even sit on the potty in the first place. We need to figure out what it is that will make it worth their while. Positive reinforcement. 😊

💙 Hi Kerri. Thank you for your comment. Aww poor little guy. He's withholding - waiting all day until he's in his bed. It sounds like it could be a classic case of anal retention. This is actually pretty common. This potty training stuff is HARD! The poo part always takes longer to catch on and get comfortable with. It can get frustrating and exhausting. I'm curious - what do you mean by: "He talks about pooping on the potty all the time." Is it in a fearful, dreading, trying to avoid way? Or does he say he "wants" to go poo on the potty? Do you think it hurts him when he goes poo sitting on the potty? It's challenging for a toddler to sit on the potty, having to hold themselves upright trying to balance with their short little legs spread apart and hiney parts stretched open. Going poo in his diaper is where he's most comfortable and familiar - he's being going in diapers since birth. Sometimes toddlers are embarrassed or ashamed of their poo when it comes out. There is often a negative association with the smell, maybe they feel dirty, yucky or messy. It's pretty common actually. Or oftentimes a toddler will feel like they're losing a part of their body when they can see their poo when it comes out. It's all very psychological. Don't give up!! But don't press a specific method if it gets stressful or might be intimidating for your little one. (it could cause potty training regression and anal retention due to negative association) Does he have his own little toddler potty on the floor? Maybe place a little toddler potty in the play room and tv play areas so he associates the potty with toys and fun and playing and watching his favorite shows. Maybe thats where snack time can happen? While sitting on the potty? 😋 Just keep trying to think of "new" and "different" ways to make sitting on the potty time a positive fun happy experience. 😊 New different rewards, praise, happy potty songs, positive reinforcement, bribes, earning ipad/screen time, blowing bubbles, a new kind of popsicle he can hold, a potty picnic party with mommy... things to keep him busy (distracted) while sitting and waiting for something to come out. Maybe bring a coloring book or stickers, a favorite stuffed animal. 🧸 Practice some role playing by setting a teddy bear or stuffed animal on the toddler potty to have a turn. Then say "Good job Teddy! Yay! Look, your teddy went poo-poo on the potty!" Then give the stuffed animal a reward or sticker or "treat" to show your child what HE can earn!! Keep on keepin' on Mama! Poo just seems to take forever for some kiddos!

😊 Hi Shehneal. Thank you for your comment! I'll be happy to create a video about this specific topic for you! How old is your child? Night time/sleep time bladder control comes later. Its usually around 4 or 5 years old before they're completely accident free thru the night. As a child grows, their bladder capacity will increase and their body will start to produce ADH hormone that helps prevent them from peeing while they sleep. (isnt that amazing?) Stay tuned! I'll do my best to get that video up ASAP! In the meantime you'll find some information about night time potty training routines, matress covers, crib pad protectors, etc in video Part 5. @NannyKnowledgewithMissJen 2 года назад
👋☺ Hi Takerria. If a toddler-in-training is still being put in a diaper or pull-up it's not really changing anything or progressing forward with toilet training as far as your toddler can tell or "feel". So toilet training hasn't technically started as far as your child knows. A diaper feels absorbent and snug and comfy. Your little cutie is used to eliminating in a diaper since birth and could pee freely at any time, little random dribbles all day long. To your child, a diaper feels snug and enclosed, familiar & comfy. A diaper is a safety net. A convenient portable toilet they can wear on their body wherever they go. In my 39+ years of experience with potty training and as a professional potty training consultant, I honestly recommend the best thing is to not have a plan B. Once the diapers are gone... they're gone. (except for naps and night time/sleeping. Always make sure your child goes potty before leaving the house or going in the car and before going to bed. I find it best to stop providing diapers during the day time. That's basically like saying "Here ya go sweetie: poop in this!" Now that you're taking potty training seriously: Pull-ups/diapers/nappies are only ok for sleeping at naptime and bedtime at night. I explain all of this in my video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dl9tOmqESRw.html

Hello Andreana, thank you for taking a moment to comment. I always appreciate all input. Can you please tell me at what time stamp I mention the things you are referring to? In ABA therapy we try to use positive reinforcement and encourage the child to do better next time. Reprimanding might come off as a scold to a child, therefore it might trigger a negative response or might be perceived by the child as a negative feeling. So yes, it might stand to reason that a reprimand could be negative as well as seem like a punishment even if there will be no consequences to follow the behavior.
