The trigger safety does have an issue, but this is the correct fix. If you look closely at the interaction between the trigger and the safety lever, there is an over-center condition between the two when only the trigger is depressed and the safety lever engages the polymer frame. This is due to the angle the safety lever land makes with the polymer frame. If you gently work the trigger and the safety back-and-forth at this point when the trigger is depressed, you'll notice the trigger must move forward in order for the safety to clear the polymer frame. This is the over-center condition. There's a simple fix, and Billy identified it... take out the over-center condition by filing the safety land to a slightly different angle so it does not "latch" on the polymer. If you file the angle of the land until it eliminates the forward action of the trigger, the over-center condition is removed, and the "latching" effect is removed. Springfield take note to improve the product going forward.

Newer models have a different angle there, they bind a lot less. You still can feel a "click" when that corner "escapes", the corner is still not rounded... safety reason probably? www.thearmorylife.com/forum/threads/hellcat-trigger-debacle.7449/

No problem at all. With the ladies on this particular firearm I see high finger placement or positioning to be a big culprit to hanging this trigger up. If you do decide to file it on your own just remember the amount of material we are rounding is very minimal and should be done incrementally testing the trigger often during the process. It is also worth noting that modifying anything on most firearms will void the warranty in general. Thanks so much for the feedback and dropping in, stay safe out there!

I just bought a new hellcat and after watching this video I tried to cause this issue. They must have upgraded the safety on the hellcat. I used my thumb and index finger to pull the trigger back with extreme pressure. I used index finger on my other hand to apply a small amount of pressure to the safety and it will release. Also from what I can see the safety part that you filed down, does not hang down as low on my pistol. I appreciate the effort and time you have put into making these helpful videos.

He’s correct Springfield isn’t the best firearm manufacturer on earth nor are they the worst. They are a budget firearm manufacturer. This being said they save time, which equals money, in manufacturing by including less precise fit and finish. This is an issue as far as the firearm not firing in an emergency situation but is not an issue as far as you accidentally firing it. I’m sure Springfield has fixed this issue and I’d bet you can contact them and they would gladly allow you to mail your firearm to them and they replace or fix the trigger safety. This isn’t a recall worthy issue in my opinion because it’s not going to cause an accidental discharge.

I have two also, black and FDE. The black had the trigger issue really bad which was quickly repaired by a friend after watching this very informative video. The FDE only slightly which I thought might clean up after after a good break in period but it hasn't. It works fine during training but I can make it fail with just a little bit of effort. Anyone who thinks they wouldn't screw up with a slightly faulty trigger under a stressful self defense situation has never been there or done that or at least been involved in intense training. You know the type who criticize videos rather than make them, Lol!. I impressed with your commitment top putting out quality videos. Is the pistol grip atop that tripod a Manfrotto product? Impressive, I have an older version. Anyway time to fine tune my FDE version. What other model gun could you carry with it's twin as a backup? I think the S&W 5 shot snubby is getting retired as a boot gun, Hellcat in it's place!

I purchased this pistol for the ability to shoot consistently without jamming, the sights and magazine capacity were a big plus ! The trigger at the gun shop didn’t seem to be an issue , on the range it was ! I figured someone would come up with a trigger to correct it , they have , but the disassembly and reassembly to instal turned me off , why , because I have been burnt in the past of aftermarket products that didn’t deliver ! Today , at the firing range, I followed your instructions and in just a few minutes of “careful filling “ transformed my Hellcat into a pistol I can be proud of ! Thank You sir ! 👍👍

To those who might think they know it all , it is real and it is a problem for some ! I’m a machinist by trade so I understand manufacturing tolerances . The safety trigger feature is a polymer unlike metal that is machined it can leave inconsistencies in the way it was designed to work ! I’m not attacking Springfield Armory as I think they have designed a winner ! With just a little light filling as needed and no more without taking away the safety and integrity of the trigger it does help smooth out an issue some of us have !

It happens simply by pinning the trigger to the rear. Very simple fix but still an issue for an EDC pistol. I have no problem with trigger placement and can make hits with a pistol easily at 50 yards with pretty much anything I pick up. I don't claim to know it all but let me just say start a youtube channel, make a video on something considered controversial and see if you don't get a butt ton of know it all douches... it doesn't help that 98% of this channels traffic is guys between the ages of 18 and 55 so this is even magnified more in the comments. That may have been the best 6-7 minute intro of a gun video worrying about other's safety towards buying a predictable, dependable gun, and how it may not work as intended due to the slightest trigger issue, worth so much interest, that I have ever seen. Thanks for carrying and caring so much. God Bless. As a Hellcat owner, understanding how the trigger works, and basically not being inept, I'm glad this issue is still brought to light. Especially, because so many have, it makes me question those who bought it, and have had trouble, shows truely just how many new gun owners have reached this market, and how inadequate and untrained they really are. Brings a good laugh tbh.

Yes indeed, the records for sales for firearms was just broken back to back and we're seeing tons of first time buyers. Its not hard to tell just through personal experience with others many, MANY people buy a gun and never take a course or hardly practice. So you're gonna have noobs buying hellcats not training and not knowing the trigger, they may just think it'll work everytime then find out differently when put into practice and the feedback you get from those who shoot wearing gloves or may suffer with arthritis. Buku people troll me about this trigger like its difficult to understand how it works, like someone shooting quite often and regularly hasn't figured it out yet 😂 those types have no idea they aren't even the target audience.

One of my M&P pistols had a definite mid stroke trigger hesitation attributable to this exact same issue, cured with mild application of a file to slightly bevel that edge. The trigger safety still works as intended, but now trigger stroke is smooth and now no risk of blocking trigger action. This can happen in other brands with this trigger safety design.

Carolina EDC reviews do it, it works ! Only take off a very little at a time with a jewelry flat file or even a diamond nail file until you feel a smooth transition ! Worked for me and saved me from getting an after market trigger ! Before I did the modification I visually saw what he described, made sense and I had nothing to lose ! Word of advise , do not file anymore thinking you will get better results , just enough to eliminate the issue ! As he has stated , you absolutely want to keep the safety feature of the pistol , Springfield Armory will tell you no to prevent liability , that is to be expected ! If you do not feel comfortable doing this simple fix take it to a reputable gunsmith ! PS- If you know how to file your nails you can do this! 😁

Don't own a Hellcat, not my personal style for CC, but I noticed this as well in my friends. He swore it was a safety feature. If it were, it would have been an advertised "feature". This definitely wasn't advertised and no other firearm I've ever owned has had that "safety feature". On the range in a zero to low pressure environment, you will likely never run into the side pressure situation. However, in a fight for your life situation, there are no guarantees. This is definitely a design and manufacturing defect. The trigger does not work as intended.

Springfield engineers changed Hellcat’s trigger safety engagement prevent accidental discharge if a person shoved Hellcat in there pocket (especially women’s pocketbooks) obtaining other items without use of holster protect trigger area. For example: keys..! If items contact side of Hellcat’s trigger the safety will not release trigger..! It very common for people to place micro compact pistols in waistband, pockets, pocketbooks, and fanny packs temporarily without use of holsters just to walk into place of business for few minutes..! Why would Springfield issue recall for engineers intentional safety design that works by design..??? Been competitive shooter since mid 80s, NFA RO 24 years, and NFA Match Director 15 years and I must say never seen or experienced anyone engaging trigger by contacting side of triggers rolling there index finger over to front of trigger..! Polymer lower frame pins are positioned 90 degrees across receiver center alignment and side loading trigger axis incorrect method especially for 1911 slide action triggers..! Also side loading trigger risk of moving pistol bore alignment off target center..! None of your claims adds up to normal training methods and I seriously doubt that’s your most common trigger engagement method..! Your trigger style of engagement is not normal hand movements compared to Springfield’s addressing additional micro compact safety concerns allows multiple carry options unlike larger most common size handguns. Personally I see you falsely representing your normal trigger engagement movement produce attention grabbing title increase viewership about one of the most popular micro compact pistols difficult keep in dealers inventory..! Real shame you didn’t post video footage actually using that poor trigger engagement technique shooting handguns and/or rifles. Call me fanboy or whatever you like but this video is a scam based my years of experience beyond your age..!

Nice book you wrote. Just bought the hell cat shot it all day with no issues. Saw the videos that had these issues and I can replicate it with my gun. Place your trigger finger at the ready position as you would be in a bad situation. Now bad has gone to worse and you must fire as quickly as possible. Bringing my trigger finger down through that small trigger guard the tip of my finger catches the trigger at a 45 degree angle and three out of ten try’s the trigger will not fire. Again doing it as fast as you can not taking the time to put your finger all the way through the trigger guard before you touch the trigger, a split second you may not have. I will definitely be sanding down that trigger safety so that can’t happen. No other trigger blade safety pistol I have does this. You are a idiot not to realize that life and death doesn’t happen shooting targets. I won’t take the risk of my weapon not firing 3 out of 10 times because the trigger safety jams. Great video.

My wife shoots her easily and I rapid fire my Hellcats running drills ambidextrously never a problem..! People here post reply negatively struggle with opening glass jars, prescription bottles, and wiping there butts clean enough so there underwear doesn’t stick to it..! Hellcat designed, manufactured, and quality controlled inspected consistently across the spectrum with vast majority experiencing no problems, but handful people posting here complaining including video channel sponsor want to play DIY gunsmith filing trigger safeties..? Very dumb thing to do and extremely dangerous for daily carry option..! Wonder if RU-vid channel sponsor realize if someone follow his advise “Filing Trigger Safety” and accidentally shoot themselves or innocent bystanders he can be held legally liable...????????????? His mind so wrapped up in generating viewership he never considered legal liability aspect advising general public “File Trigger Safety”..! Pure genius he is...!!! I do find it odd not a single malfunctioning operator has contacted Springfield Armory about “manufacture trigger safety design defect” and posted customer service or technical support response..? Ok, boys and girls hopefully none of you struggling on who to vote for this November 2020 elections, but from sounds of it probably so please remember Trump 2020 Trump 2020 Trump 2020..! Maybe right on palm of you hand every couple days..! If you can’t figure it out or develop consistent trigger control sale your Hellcat to me cheap and go buy subnose revolver. I did that to my cat. I used a dremel with a needle grinder in 20 seconds and it is perfect now, I also polished the trigger bar plunger and trimmed a little off the trigger safety blade so the trigger feels flat when fully depressed. I also did a radius undercut on the trigger guard at the grip to preventa hot spot that I noticed. Man it feels real nice and is far better then it was, it shoots considerably better. The trigger pull is 4lbs now. I did the mods the same day I got it after I went to the range. I shoot 200 rounds and after 30 rounds I noticed pain on my trigger finger, I looked and I had a blister on the outer edge of my trigger finger due to the trigger safety blade and the hard trigger pull...Now the problems are 100% solved..

I see this as a valuable safety asset, especially when drawing from a holster in IWB or in re-holstering under pressure. But then I also carry empty chamber with a Glock and sometimes I use a trigger Satf-T-Blok! It is constant user training and then building muscle memory that makes any weapon safe or a danger in use. Making a weapon with an in-trigger safety able to fire with side pressure does not sound like a good idea to my way of thinking. If you have a good solid shooting grip with proper trigger finger placement, then you will always get a pull-bang. Now this is just my thought or two, so easy on the flame throwers. I am also so old that I have to check my pants zipper twice and look for buggers showing in my nose! YouKnowWho?

There are plenty of videos right here on RU-vid of people drawing from their holsters (both 3 o'clock and appendix) racking their slide in one motion as they fully present and fire. It takes a fraction of a second without having to look. In comparison to looking for your seatbelt, grabbing it, looking across to find the insert on the other side, and properly aligning it to insert it. Completely fallacious analogy! You shouldn't be talking down to anyone with that lame, constantly repeated by everyone else, bad analogy!

I have worked with law enforcement for many years. I can tell stories of professionals, who practice intensely and continually, when in a fire fight still have things go wrong. The issue with the Hellcat is real and as you said, when you are on a range with no pressure, no adrenalin pumping and lots of time, sure, you can put your finger on the trigger squarely. But, in real life, going from finger off to finger on, especially if you have a larger hand, can easily lead to sideways pressure on that trigger. Well done.

No. You are right. This was an oversight in the design and development of this gun. The sooner they deal with it, the better. As a matter of customer loyalty and feedback, and protection of the brand name, and the launch of a new model, they need to deal with it, honestly and earnestly immediately. It is not the end of the world, but it could be if someone gets killed trying to defend themselves. Many legend guns and popular guns start with a few hiccups. It would be hard to argue that this was a deliberate design feature. More likely it was an overlooked fit and finish issue to do with tolerance as there is absolutely nothing in mechanical function that specifically creates the side load of the trigger to lock out the shooter from being able to fire. Having anything that unnecessarily inhibits, delays, or impedes a self defense carry gun from being capable of firing defeats the intended purpose of the guns design and use, as most likely the gun will be drawn in a panick, or adrenaline filled self defense moment. Making such a feature deliberately in the design makes absolutely no sense at all. And it is not a features in similar guns they produce. It would be a liability to carry if your life was at stake. This was a screw up.

My XDs Mod 2 had a gritty, sometimes sticky take up travel especially if your finger was high on the trigger. I did this fix and now the take up is very smooth and the safety still functions. I did remove the blade to do the filing. Good stuff.

The reason to buy this gun is the size and most importantly, the capacity. The trigger sucks. This guy is right. The overbearing safety could easily prevent you from firing in a crisis situation since it's way too dominant. My Walthers and HK's are far better and it's not like the Hellcat is a $200 gun. The design should be improved or a different trigger should be used from the factory. I'll probably change it because if I go in there with a file, with my luck, I'll ruin it. Anyone that's saying "This is what a safety is supposed to do" has to admit that there's fine line between it doing its job and preventing you from protecting yourself. This particular trigger is way too close to the latter.

I have my HK VP9 and it’s a tank! Love it! Personally, I’d go with the Glock 43x over the Hellcat. Wish I could snag a Walther though....one day :-)
@ndjr
@ndjr 3 года назад
@@mashpotatoes3018 Glock 43X is great I'm sure but bigger and less capacity than Hellcat. It's a hard combination to beat... I had a PPS and it was similar size and a superior gun but only held 8 rounds at most. 13 in the Hellcat is a big difference. I bought the PPQ SC hoping to carry it but it's a little big for me. The VP9 is the best for me but way too big for me to carry.. So Hellcat it is for the time being.

Actual fix/modification starts at 6:44 (here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y1BP85ApUzU.html) if you desire to skip the rant. I personally don't see it as a huge deal, but it shouldn't be this way and is definitely not ideal. I ill do this fix/mod once I get a Hellcat.

@JamesDaily I personally appreciated the explanation as I recently purchased a Hellcat. Not being accustomed to these types of trigger safeties, I had no idea that it was an issue. The thorough explanation was appreciated. I hadn’t noticed or considered that aspect of the trigger safety.

The way i look at it is this, the safety doesnt pick and choose when to release, it works the exact same every single time. If you press down on the trigger incorrectly it will not engage, as is designed. The argument that you cant train to mitigate that is the same argument people make for not carrying guns with external safeties even though its simply just not correct. It certainly will take a lot of extra training to reliably do it right every time but thats no different than the people who have to drop their thumb safety every time they draw, it is a learnable trait. Getting beyond that even if you dont do it right and it locks letting it off and then doing it right isnt the end of the world. Its maybe an extra 1/3 second. And if thats the difference between life and death in a self defense scenario there are other things you can do to mitigate that that will be more impactful to keeping you safe. The 21ft rule isnt an absolute but is still legitimately important. If the attacker is close enough that this trigger is what kills you, hes too close in the first place. I understand your point and im totally for the people modifying their guns however they wish. But to pretend this is some highly important safety issue seems a bit intellectually dishonest to me when from an actual statistical standpoint the chances of it causing your death might as well be zero.
@bcabmac
@bcabmac 4 года назад
Things you can do to mitigate it? ......You're right, file it or have a gun smith do it so it fires un impeded just like the other similar models they produce do. I do not believe that in any way, this was an intended element of the design. I would love to, not just hear them say it, but see the written design, function and features statement filed with the patent office. I'll bet there is no mention of it at all.
@derricklittle5591
@derricklittle5591 4 года назад
bcabmac we’ll never know. But i know so far in the 100 rounds ive put through mine i literaly cannot get it to do this unless I specifically try to, because im pulling the trigger correctly. There will always be 1000 “what if” scenarios on what might happen to make your gun not work when it needs to, and if you make your decisions based on those just go get a revolver and call it a day. This is basically a non issue if youre using the firearm correctly and everyone on youtube is freaking out like the ceo of springfield shot their mother in the face. If you pull the trigger correctly the gun goes off. If you do not it wont. Regardless of wether your personal preference is a trigger safety that doesnt actually stop a incorrect press from setting it off or not the reality is that this trigger safety does what its suppose to do. If it happened to everyone constantly id say there was a point to this but i literally cant even make it happen on a normal draw unless i do it intentionally at a snails pace.
@bcabmac
@bcabmac 4 года назад
@@derricklittle5591 You might be correct in the assumption that it may never do it. And so far in 100 rounds it has performed flawlessly. But as the old saying goes, " complacency breeds contempt" as to the thought that it seemingly will never happen. But knowing there is a possible condition that can occur, however seemingly remote, is a condition that is now known to exist in the Hellcat, that does not exist in their other models with similar trigger design. Cleaning up the trigger tolerances for clearance and un impeded function, I think is a good recommendation.

Not picking a side as its an open discussion but that is the same train of thought I have on it.
@derricklittle5591
@derricklittle5591 4 года назад
bcabmac oh im absolutely all for that. Im more so commentating on all the people who are here on youtube acting as if using this gun as an edc will end up getting them killed due to costing them an extra third of a second when its much more likely their lackluster shooting ability will be their downfall. If springfield wants to recall their triggers im perfectly fine with that. I get why some people are upset that the trigger safety is much more unforgiving on bad presses than most other guns, i just refuse to accept the narrative that this gun is somehow this insurmountable safety issue when most people with decent finger placement on their trigger have to try to even replicate the issue. People seem to have zero issues killing each other in chicago and detroit with their hipoints so id wager this is pretty close to a non issue.

I feel like it's good to have that safety, if something accidentally was putting pressure on the trigger, all it takes it to fore is pushing that little tab. I appreciate the hellcat and it shows you need to practice self defense situations, you can really tell you're stretching quite a bit to show the fault of the trigger. It's never been a problem to most owners.
