I'm from the Greater Toronto Area and I know the guys and my studio partner and I have been providing Anvil with a rehearsal space for over 10 years and I can assure everyone that these guys are the real deal. They have a story like no other! \m/
I was a lifelong touring guy. This interview is real. I can feel the excitement in the story telling. I bet all of us real road dogs can identify this is authentic story telling. Note to kids -- this is the best way to make a living in the world. It’s like surfing- screwing- being paid to party- and a 100 people telling you that you are their hero at once. Damn I miss those days of being myself. The “real world” is absolute bullshit. You wanna make real human connections that last a lifetime? Make music- tour music- eat and screw music. I am humbled constantly as I build a life outside the bubble. The tour life was living. Outside the bubble is only surviving - even at 3x the income. I’d rather die a man that tried - than die a man w a monster portfolio. How do you want your children define success? Its being proud- happy- and good people.
I have had the honor of sharing the Stage with Anvil in 2015. Spent the day with them and Made lifetime Memories. Lips and Robb are as Real as they get.
Two inspirational guys and very talented. Sometimes I feel like giving up my music dream, but then I hear this and it makes me want to keep going. We are only here once.
Don't give up if you have an avenue to make a career out of it, if you don't it becomes a fun hobby bc the metal world will make you still have another source of income unless you can become a top tier headliner. Do what you love, its not all about money but at some point you have to support yourself..
@@paulfaulkner2855 Thanks so much I really appreciate your comment and yes I absoloutely agree with you on. Yes do what I love which is performing and writing songs and I have had many people hear my songs and say that helped them through tough times and that is truly inspiring to hear that what you wrote in your bedroom touches people. My band Fuel2Fire needs someone like Sacha who belives so much in Anvil to fund my band now we will soon have our second EP out.
This is so awesome. Big props to Sascha and Lipps and Rob for making sure that Anvil got the break they worked so hard for. This is what makes life worth living 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
I'm glued to this conversation. Sasha's dream come true, the same dream I and all us rockers have had. To hang with a band that you love from your heart is still a dream for me. Rock will never die, it will always be there because someone will always carry that flag. God Bless ANVIL !!!
I remember when I saw the documentary. I thought it was fake. About halfway through in started to have doubts and my mind was blown when I found it it was real. Kudos to the band for not giving up. Truly inspiring.
In spite of being a metal fan who grew up in the genre's heyday, Anvil slipped under my radar and I knew nothing of them but I genuinely LOVED the documentary. I couldn't even help pulling for lips and rob after seeing it and wanted to see them achieve the success they've worked so hard for, for so long. I still don't give a shit about their music but they're seemingly such good dudes I can't help but like them.
We considered our band 1989-2015 ish with our little following of 300 fans faithfully following us around was great fun loved every minute we did a little bit of everything. Studio, shows, interviews, and reviews on the tiniest scale but it was all there, even the cocaine we made no money had great fun, no regrets lol.
I remeber seeing an ad for the movie the first time it appeared in my local newspaper. I said, "I NEED TO SEE THIS!" It was THE BEST DOCUMENTARY EVER! I kept wondering why I never heard of Anvil because THEY WERE AWESOME!!! It brought up so many emotions. From laughing, to crying, to sentimental break ups, strange predicaments and wondering, "What in the hell is going on here?" But one thing became clear... Lips NEVER GAVE UP HOPE! You wondered if he was insane, if he was driven, both? He worked at a school and to think this known rock n roller was working in your school was out of this world, but sad because he was so good, why is he working at a school? These guys are so down to earth and have never lost the dream. They are super good, I just don't understand why they weren't huge like all these other known bands. It befuddles me. This is one movie that will register in my mind forever. I've never forgotten it and I've thought about Anvil often over the years. And just a few weeks ago I thought about Anvil and it brought me here. I've posted on rock critique youtube sites about Anvil and this documentary. No response... yet. Now, I'm.wondering about The Rutles. Anyone heard of that fake Beatles band? Dud Sacha have anything to do with the making of that film?
Man, I am SO glad they did this interview and that you shared it with us. I've been a fan since I was a kid, but was too young to see them live back then. I finally got my chance this past June, and while the gig wasn't as well attended as it should have been, my pal and I were given the gift of a 2 plus hour pre-show chat with Robbo and Chris, their current bassist. We hardly talked about Anvil at all, but rather all kindsa jazz music, the universe and where we thought the world was heading. Classic stoner conversations. They were both sweet and humble dudes, and one of those rare instances where meeting a hero is better than you'd hoped it would be.
I can concur. I've seen anvil 3 times in the UK and talked to them a few times. Shared a smoke with robbo in Newcastle, total stoner. Very chill and loves talking shit. Chris their bassist is really nice guy too, genuinely great dude.
i went to the premier for the re-release, it was my first time watching but this documentary was incredible and inspiring for all of the uncertainty i have in pursuing my passions. love these guys
This documentary truly gives behind the lighted stage by rush s run for its money. Both are great in different ways and double kudos since they're both canadian!
I lost the abilty to use my fingers for more than 30 years, then when I started re-recording all my 80s tracks I was hit by a stroke .. but I'm still releasing a billion rock / pop songs rather than the same stereotype metal nowadays .. melodic songs is my new stand! 🙂
Kings X is another band that is still out there grinding it with a new album and a tour. They missed their moment as well but came real close to exploding into the scene. But they love what they are doing and do it for that reason. I should include myself in this as well I love playing the songs we wrote and all the other songs over the years that I still play to this day. I haven’t played out somewhere in a long time but hope to change that soon. I totally relate to the movie and these guys real life struggles. I love this so much. Thank you…
Did you know King’s X was gonna break on headbangers ball ? With real promo- right when Kurt Cobain was murdered and nobody talked about anything else for the next several months
This was such a great 2h18min moment to spend with Anvil, I’m turning 60 in a few days and still only listen to rock music since my teenage years!!! Looking forward to the re-release even after watching the original almost yearly!!!
I absolutely loved this movie ....my older brother was a big fan of Anvil and had a massive anvil poster up in our bedroom when we were growing up back in the 80s here in the u.k. so I'd known of anvil basically all my life...what spirit and determination these guys have..I mean that must have been so hard ..becoming relatively famous and watching all the other big bands like Whitesnake, bon jovi , the scorpions and many others go on and become world famous and for anvil to be basically forgotten and left behind...but good for them..they stuck to it and kept their dream alive ...i especially love the end part of the film where the band walk out on stage and lips's face lights up when he sees the crowd ...amazing
Absolutely top podcast. I hate heavy metal but have been listening to Anvil since and actually enjoying it - March of the Crabs is great. And can’t wait to see the documentary. I loved the fact that you just let the conversation flow. I laughed. I cried. And felt uplifted and inspired. Just brilliant!. Sasha is an amazing story teller. Bravo.
This is one of the best podcasts I have listened too. I can't believe that I listened to this and found it so interesting! I have shared this to my kids and friends. Never would I listen to something like this, but now, I am hooked! I remember Anvil a long time ago, but never thought that they had kept going. Way to be an inspiration! YOU GUYS ROCK!
Speaking about another great film it wasn't a documentary but it was based on a true story. The movie Lord's of chaos is definitely worth a watch. I rented it from the library and my roommate who is not into that kind of music even loved the movie. I'm mentioning it in the same light as this because when I say both films I didn't expect to be so captivated. Definitely a must see gem and I'm not surprised that they blew up after the documentary.
I can't imagine how great this doco must be to garner this much praise ..! It's either a case of August is Falling (a major spoof that everyone is in on, all the utube comments are "in" on it, singing their praise, in support of the "bit" ), OR... Something truly special transpires on this film, and I gotta see it to believe it... ...I just cant imagine what could generate so much universal support, tho. .. 🤔
Originally from Toronto, I remember the hype around the first album… documentary is gut wrenching(ly) real and inspiring… true dedication to their craft
Rob went to the same Jr. HS in Willowdale I did and I remember seeing him and Steve do a talent show in the auditorium in or around 73. Years later I saw them play at Yonge Station in Toronto around 1978. Great Guys!
I saw the movie when it came out. BUT, on a side note, back in the late 60s, Lips; real name is Steve; I jammed with him and a bass player, Gary Greenblat in my parent's basement. We were looking for a drummer. I'm a keyboard player. True story! We went to the same high school.
Ok at 26 minutes in I had to stop go download and pay for the movie which I have seen but it’s been a while back watched it again and now back to this podcast …. Great job on the film by the way..by the way I’m 55 and still chasing the dream just started an all original band a year ago ..my 5th band ..but we are booked for most of 2023 … believe it bro
I met anvil about 8 years ago. They walked into a restaurant I was having lunch in during my lunch break. I knew I recognized them from somewhere , and then it clicked that it was from the documentary. So I asked “hey are you guys anvil?”, to which the lead singer responded, “pshh, no duh”, in the most condescending, dismissive way. He then proceeded to ignore me and order food with the rest of the band. It instantly made me realize that the band didn’t have big success because the lead singer was simply an asshole. Being nice goes a long way.
I want to know exactly what's different nowadays compare to 20 years ago. It seems to me that their albums don't sell any more than they used to and that their gigs are still in relatively small venues. Were they completely out of the touring life before the documentary and can they actually make a proper living off touring nowadays?
I've got a great idea... Make a movie about resurrecting Squirrely's career! Anvil needs a second guitarist... Dave Allison was a great rhythm player. When i saw them live, Squirrely ripped! Great stage presence too.
Kinda interesting they used that album title. Exodus already used it. Kind of interesting that it was used by a band called Exodus. These guys are super cool. All the best for you guys man.
You're really posting this for free on RU-vid? Thanks so much - it looks great - I've just watched the intro. and am going to watch it tonight. I was just thinking about Anvil because I'd heard about a new King Crimson documentary that's been released and was saying it's like Anvil, in that it's good even for people, like me, who are not into the genre. Then the presenter at the beginning, here, said the exact same thing.
The That Could Have Been Me thought can be taken in different ways because I guarantee you part of Lars Ulrich and Steve Harris and any huge star misses those days of coming up and the honesty of the music
John otway is both a brilliant performer and singer songwriter AND a parody of the failed musical phenomenon... He is hilarious. I recommend OTWAY THE MOVIE. I love it when he had his own airline, complete with livery on the planes, where he flew his audience down under... A financial disaster but strange success!!
Lipps is a tool too, treats fans like garbage. The guy has a huge ego and exactly why he couldn’t handle their ex bass player Glenn five he got jealous of him being popular in the band too. Lipps is a jerk and ass to fans. He can’t even get a singer because he wants to take all the spotlight since his ego is huge
You have no clue what you are talking about!! Glenn 5 left the band because he couldn't handle that he didn't get the recognition the other guys got...as he wasn't an original member. He's the looser!! Anvil have continued on now 10 years past his departure...where's Glenn now?? Observe rather than spew bullshit!!
You're in denial of their success....probably you're jealous. They haven't stopped recording and touring all over the planet making a full on living...which is more than 90% of musicians ever get!! You don't need to sell millions to make a great honest living and just because some do make millions doesn't necessarily mean you'll like their music!! Plenty of rap artists that sell large that I can't stand!!
Okay I heard the entire podcast that was posted few days back and loved it. I don't mind listening to it again, would love it :P But curious, is this different from the earlier one? Thank you
We reposted / republished because this version has many more clips from the movie. It was originally flagged (incorrectly) for copyright issues that we appealed and won. So this is just a better video version of the same conversation. Hope this clarifies!
And one more thing they need to make that movie more available to stream and just have it on RU-vid or you know a free streaming site because people don't know who they are and they're not going to get the exposure only being on prime or something else I forget what it is but cuz I wanted to watch it again and I know I watched it on a free station when I first watched it it was a free format there are so many people that don't know who these guys are still to this day 50 years after.
I promise you that it will be one of the best movie experiences of your life. Dave Grohl said it best, and he was talking to you apparently... "You do not have to like Heavy Metal music, to love this movie".
How can you dislike Heavy Metal??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
