What a thought-trail to follow! I like the way it ended with the conclusion that we're all very limited in our capacity to understand these questions, that we have made progress in the past, and because of this, there is the probability that we'll continue to make progress. And it is fascinating that there is no limit to our progress, that we'll never reach an ultimate understanding. Civilization rides on our ability to feel united in purpose, and to have a goal for our existence as a society. In the past, this usually arrived through the appearance of a Jesus, a Buddha, a Muhammed or a Krishna. As Philip mentioned, people will find another avenue towards unity, like nationalism, tribalism or racism. That doesn't usually work out well. So a healthy world civilization needs a spiritual core which causes us to feel united as a human race. Philosophers aren't equipped to do this.
Tables and bats always get a mention in consciousness chats. I'm now waiting for chocolate to come up to complete my consciousness bingo card. Great conversion! :)
Not just human identity! How can we know if consciousness toggles up with the complexity of the organism? How can we presuppose the inner world of anything else other than ourselves? I'm happy marvelling at the magic of all of this. I feel like Zach Bush would make a great addition to this conversation. I wonder if Philip meditates. I wonder what mothers have to say about all of this. So many words circling around a spot we can't quite hit. I would also like to know if he consumes animals.
@@philipgoff7897 To be fair, I wondered if you meditated before it had come up in conversation. Are you from Birmingham? I learned so much from this conversation. Thank you.
Consciousness can be defined as the ability to interact or react with the environment and or surrounding, it comes from the very basic (cells bouncing around their environment) to the very complex and does not need to be limited to the need from a brain.
Consciousness is who you really are, even non consciousness state. You expand your consciousness in process of understanding who you are. To understand who you are you need Your knowledge that came out of experience you get in you life and beyond.
The sacred word HU has opened up reality for me. So, What do YOU want to experience or learn? I share not to say wow, I’m great, but to show a tiny bit of what the HU can do, if approached w/ love. Do u think it odd to say I see past lives, and the future as well? That I’ve traveled back in time to events I want to learn about. The sacred HU delivers what is beyond concepts that the mind, or science can grasp. There are the worlds of duality: physical, astral, causal, mental & the higher mind called the etheric. We wear these bodies to protect soul from harsh vibrations & they provide us w/ experience. Beyond these worlds of duality are what’s called pure positive God worlds. As we master love we get more opportunities to know truth. HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU is on many YT channels.
This is also interesting in the context of the largely discredited but actually repeated "life genesis" experiments of Wilhelm Reich (I'm just calling it that). And the meditation focuses peeling back to the sort of nothingness that's experiencing and observing. Very cool show, RR.
"Or do we start with both?" is something to think about. Matter and consciousness may be inextricably bound and neither one may have to be parent to the other. I lean towards there being an underlying intelligence/consciousness in how matter is governed (call this God if you want). Western thinking is all about black and white choices. Whereas (when explained well enough) there is another option. Dichotomies. Some of the fundamentals, when considered as simultaneous truths, make a ton of sense if you can wrap your head around it. It's VERY hard when schooled in a "western" mindset, but worth exploring.
The biggest limitation with science is it can only deal with things that are real. Serious limitation. Pain is a bad example of something beyond observability. Nerve endings which signal pain and the brain processes that perceive has been observed by science. Almost everything used as an example for qualia and support for some external consciousness is related to a human biological sense that isn't easy to put into words. That's a limitation of language. It's why music critics have to use so many metaphors. Vibrations and aural frequencies are easily observable and explainable, as are reasons why some are more pleasing to the ear. Colors are also frequencies, which we often associate with things that have those colors, or metaphors the colors are used for (red/anger for example). All biological associations. Just because we don't have direct language pointers to perception of visual or aural frequencies, besides the common names we've given them, doesn't make them extra-biological. Instead of looking in imaginary places outside of the brain, look to the central nervous system and other biological organs. Lack of a nervous system is why AI will never understand what it's saying. Additionally, jazz is easily explainable, even down to the timing that gives it its swing feel. Again, it's all limitations of language.
I’m struggling with this one. I want to buy it, but I keep hearing Graham Hancock and Marjorie Taylor Green (albeit much smarter) in the metaphorical approach of his hypothesis. At the very least he agrees “science is crucial.”
Amazing video and thank you for breaking it down!! Despite the economic downturn, I'm so happy 😊I have been earning $ 60,000 returns from my $9,000 investment every 21days.
I think I'm blessed because if not I wouldn't have met someone who is as spectacular as expert Mr Jed McCaleb I think he is the best broker I ever seen
The crypto market is highly profitable with an expert broker just like Mr Jed McCaleb I got recommended to him and since then my financial life has been a success.
Long term investment is the best now. I invested $6,500 in march last year with *expert* Jed McCaleb and i top up my trade with $500 every week. Now, I'm having over $147,000 on my dashboard. Toping up your trade is really important
This young man should read Bergson's _Matter and Memory_ (despite Russell's opinion on Bergson), to stop thinking, for example, that memories are stored in the brain.
Please get Tom Campbell, the physicist, on your show to discuss the nature of consciousness and reality. Tom has artfully, and credibly, bridged the gap between the subjective and objective experiences of reality. Tom also has a far more well thought through and complete definition of consciousness than "it's what it's like to be you". This guest has only just scratched the surface of this topic - basically just repeating established views, whilst offering little original thought. Found this interview quite under whelming.
Why does he refer to the questions of consciousness as a "Problem" ? I believe this is severely flawed and a low level of perceiving and relating to our experience. It makes it seem as if there is something wrong lol which is entirely false. There is no problem, the only problem is that people believe there is a problem.. I love the conversations myself as they are one of my favorite things to ponder and discuss but I would not refer to these beautiful aspects of our experience as problems.. needs reframing from my perspective. thank you for shedding light on these topics however, greatly appreciated.
you know... as an armchair philosopher myself... who has gone year to year, and decade to decade, constantly changing and re-evaluating how i perceive the world and myself... as well as my relationship to it... this guy nauseates me. i'm not saying that science is the end-all or be-all. science, itself, suffers from bias. the most conventional of scientific beliefs can shift or even be turned on its head. but this philosopher seems to try to put his imagined reality as a more valuable practice than science. which is as attractive as conspiracy theories or the woke movement. it is like religion in the way that it offers control to some people. a philosopher doesn't need to be a scientist. or, even, dogmatically hold onto conventional or traditional beliefs. but i think a philosopher should, at least, try to digest the information that is presented. that includes the various scientific fields. otherwise, you are just making stuff up. however eloquently. and trying to sell your guru, self help, narcissistic self-importance to others desperate or ignorant enough to fall for it. wtf should we call philosophy then? mental gymnastics? just with prettier words? just a juicier bait on the hook for hungry fish? nauseating. really difficult to listen to. ... everyone wants attention. validation. to some extent or another. some make a living off how successfully they can be effective in getting people to buy what they are selling. and this channel, like many others, is dedicated to exactly that. selling ideas. but not the critical thinking. indoctrination. from one preacher to the next. a fresh poison each week.
