Jimmy or Jemmy is a crowbar. Jimmy riddle cockney slang for piddle. 'He's gone for a jimmy.' is 'He's gone for a piddle (wee).' Del was asking if Grandad wanted the crowbar to lift the floorboards. Grandad misunderstood.

@@stoney332 Since you have given another meaning for the term jemmy (one, I admit, that I haven't heard before) it now means it could mean either piddle or whiskey. It's like when people tell you to watch a film because there's a great twist at the end. Even if they don't tell you what the twist actually is it can still spoil it for you because you're prepared for the twist. That's how the Sixth Sense was spoiled for me before I'd watched it. Once you know that its impact is based on a twist you easily work out what the twist is very early on in the film.

That is my favourite episode, it's called Yellow Peril. They buy a batch of paint in unmarked tins from Trigger and it turns out to be luminous paint used by British Rail for signs in tunnels. Many great moments in that episode, including the 'deep sea diver's watch' gag, the cat running out of the Chinese and Del saying "that's number 57 off the menu tonight" and the staff at the Chinese wearing sunglasses when Mr Chin phones Del. Grandad has the best line of course. Upon seeing the grave, he says "what worries me Del Boy is that it's on the main flight path to Heathrow!"

It wasn't a "Jammy" he was offered a "Jemmy" (a jemmy being the tool that acts as a lever that dell-boy was holding). Chandeliers were cleaned this way, they were made from crystal/ leaded glass and bak in the days, when smoking was a thing, the nicotine/soot build up dulled the sparkle, sooo yes 5his was a thing, when I worked in cou try houses, this was an annual task, but, things had progressed, we would spray each pendant with a spray of vinegar and water (drip sheets on floor) and polish after , the way this shows is take the fitting down and separate each branch, dip in cleaning solution, dry and polish to a gleam. Hope this helps. Ps they were only hed together y wire, so separation was easy, and basically rewired every clean

They are very inventive with slang in London. This is hus a short 5 minutes from a half hour programme, so it's not really and sketch, and the build up and denuement are missing. When grandad goes up the stairs, Del asks him if he wants a 'Jemmy'. He is talking about getting a crowbar to 'Jemmy' up the floorboards. grandad thinks he means 'Jimmy Riddle' which is cockney rhyming slang for 'widdle' or 'piddle' both of which mean having a wee, hence he says he had one before they left. The posh guy is the butler. In this episode, Del has managed to get himself invited to a country estate for a grouse shoot and he then persuades the lord of the house to let them clean the chandeliers. Another great scene in this episode is when Del turns up for the shoot. He asked a contact to get him a gun - remember, in the UK they aren't easy to come by. Del has the gun in a case but only realises when he opens it that it's a sawn-off double barrel shotgun, of the type criminals use in robberies.

Lillian, for your information. Very London Working class accents, in Fools & Horses.

You should watch whole episodes of Only Fools and Horses there was never a bad one. David Jason (Del Boy) starred with Ronnie Barker in Open All Hours, a sitcom about a tight fisted grocery shop owner and his nephew, two of our best comedy actors in a really good series.

A jimmy is a short crowbar, or pry bar. Grandad thought he meant a jimmy riddle, cockney rhyming slang for a piddle (a pee), which is why he said he had one before he came out. It's always going to be difficult for you to get some jokes which contain British slang words, because you have never heard them before moving to the UK. I love the way you try though.

Seen it many times. One of the great visual gags - for me even slightly better than Del Boy falling through the bar hatch..... A jemmy is a tool used by burglars to get into other people’s houses (like a crowbar).
