@@SamToz What most people seem to forget in this discussion, is the stereo seperation. You're right - superficially speaking, it doesn't make a lot of difference if you got a mono or 2 stereo drivers on a speaker this small. BUT, when listening to songs that have a lot of different stuff going on in the left and right channel, mono speakers immediately show their weakness. Take classical music, for example. Given you have a relatively good recording of a classical piece, you'll notice that sometimes, the strings will only be playing on the left side, while the horns are blasting on the right side. And believe it or not, even the Flip 4 is capable of reproducing this; When holding the speaker directly in front of you, the stereo seperation is clearly audible. With that being said, I can totally understand that the majority of customers buying Flip speakers won't even bother at all. I can also get around the lack of BT 5.0 - after all, the 4.2 connection worked perfectly fine on their previous devices, and the range is more than enough for most people. But here's where the positivity ends. The Flip 5, to me, is a major step in the wrong direction. I will keep my Flip 4 as long as possible, and then look elsewhere for a decent, compact bt speaker. After all, there's a wide variety of small bt speakers to choose from nowadays.
That's actually a very good decision. I did the same, and the best part was that I got both of them for ~70$ each. JBL offers a dedicated outlet store on their website, where you can buy refurbished devices for significantly less money - sometimes even up to 70% discount. The majority are older devices, like the entire previous generation of BT speakers. But sometimes, they even got brand new ones. When I saw the Flip 4 on sale about half a year ago, I immediately ordered 2. The best part is that you can connect them and switch into stereo mode, making them play the left and the right channel individually!
I have 3 JBL Flip 4 (technically 4) 2 JBL Bomboxes 1 JBL Xtreme 2 1 JBL Pulse 3 So, JBL, do you expect me to buy a new speaker without connect plus? The answer is NO. I am probably gonna continue buying connect plus speakers. All these speakers sound great and they will only get cheaper. So technically this is a win for me ❤️
Rick Weigle I've never been much of a fan of the pupse 3's sound... but the 360 is cool and lights are awesome. I have not heard the charge three, but I believe it is better than the pulse 3 👍🏽 I might do that! Thank you 🤗

You both made the right decision. The Flip 4 is absolutely amazing for its size, and with the Flip 5 just recently released, prices will drop like crazy. I managed to get two Flip 4's for roughly 66$ each. Mind you that this was already 4 months ago. They will even get cheaper, and at this point, it should be a 100% no-brainer for anybody interested in buying a small bt speaker with excellent sound!

I have two Flip 5's, they sound absolutely stunning even with the one speaker. Teo of them paired together? Jaw dropping. Battery is amazing, bass is impressive, sound is even better. Quality is on point.

I had the flip 4 and is was like a mini portable stereo. On my bed at my cottage, I put the flip 4 on my chest and I get to listen to the beautiful sound of a stereo. Flip 5, I cant do it with that!!!
Maybe the flip 6 will have a real true upgrade,bring back 4s 🔋 lights features and aux jack bring back stereo and increase drivers more watts,if they would have done that I'd be 😎 with that.
BTW, if you are looking for the best sound from the Flip 4 or the Charge 3, place it on top of your head with the JBL logo facing down towards you (use elastic bands as necessary) ... trust👌🏾
Very true mate 👍One of the biggest factor I invested in a lot of JBL products was so that I connect them all. Backward compatibility could have been easily added but this was just a decision to milk money.
Even a normal person would designed a better idea...something like a centered oval speaker for bass and one tweeter on each side near the oval driver, something like a 2.1 system.
I have jbl charge 3, xtreme, and flip 4 they are good speakers. If they keep doing this crap, oh wait they are doing it again... Connect, connect+, and now party boost, plus going back to single driver on charge 4 im gonna move to sony, anker, or UE. Thanks for the info DLX👍

The partyboost supposdly is able to connect up to 1000 speakers instead of the connect+ connecting up to 100. But no your also right, in my opinion it wouldn't be hard to add the connect+ into the speaker along with the partyboost. Just one extra button and charge like 10 more dollars to be honest. It's so dumb they wouldn't do that.

I just got a flip 5, I have 2x flip 4s and a charge 4, they all work well together but the 5 doesn’t due to this technology ‘upgrade’ All the speakers use the same Bluetooth 4.2 standard even the new flip 5, so this is most definitely a marketing ploy by JBL. Very disappointed, If they don’t address this and support the older speakers then I’ll be moving to UE just like many others already have. They did this before with JBL Connect & JBL Connect+, flip 3’s won’t link with flip 4s etc. So expect no change from them, Do update us if you get a response or update from your emails.

With so many excellent speakers out there, I don't understand why JBL is going the "MONO" Route!! my guess is...ever since (Samsung) acquired JBL they've been going downhill! I'll never buy a "MONO" speaker at that price point!
Mono came after Samsung so there is a big chance they have something to do with it, my hope is there is some sleepy engineer who needs to be woken up very soon

I knew all and went to buy flip 4 today and wanted to test both in the same room flip 5 sounds much better stronger than 4 even charge 3 so bought the flip 5 .No microphone for telephone calls no jack input nothing but sounds really better believe me fills the room .The new generation jbl s will connect with this partyboost system so had to choose 5

I own 3 JBL speakers that run on connect plus, and literally bought two flip 5s to add to them. Opened them up only to find out there were not compatible with all my other speakers. Poor decision by management. I suspect this money grab will piss off a lot of people.
I been a big fan of JBL for years. Not a big fan of what they are recently doing. I really feel your frustration. There improvements they used to do was really significant like the flip 3 to the flip 4 sound quality. Yeah the connect to connector + was a worry to us but we ended up liking it. I just don’t get why they made something that dose the same thing and not make it compatible with the rest . I really agree with you on the mono speakers. It’s something of the past and should not be done at all anymore. I’m really praying that when they release the boombox 2 that it’s not going to be a mono. That would not make anything since at all. Jbl reputation seems like it’s going downhill
Grzegorz_174 not with that mono speaker lmao.... On a speaker of that size you can tell the difference of stereo audio in many songs that implement stereo sounds. Even on the flip 4 vs the flip 5 you can tell, on the charge 3 to the charge 4, the difference is greater.

I wouldn't generalize though, but in terms of JBL and the Flip 5's mono driver, it is 100% true. The initial, dead giveaway was when a guy from JBL introduced the Flip 5 to RU-vidr allroundpc at CES back in January, where he briefly mentions the mono driver alongside other specs, without going into further detail. When JBL noticed that people got really angry about it, they came up with some half-baked excuses like "it has 20W instead of 16W!" or "the lack of one driver makes for an even better bass resonance!", which, of course, are complete bs. But they somehow got away with it, and after the majority of average consumers had been convinced, they started full-on covering it up. On the official JBL Flip 5 website, the mention of a mono driver is nowhere to be found. And I mean literally NOWHERE. The only thing we get to know about the driver at all is that it's "racetrack-shaped" and delivers "high output". As an audiophile who knows a thing or two about speakers, it really feels like I've been taken for a ride here.
THANK YOU!!! Finally, an honest, unbiased view on the Flip 5, especially on the new PartyBoost feature. I immediately subscribed! The Flip 5 is the worst JBL BT speaker yet: - No BT 5.0. - Still doesn't float. - A freakin' MONO driver. - No 3.5mm AUX input. - USB Port exposed (hence has to be completely dry everytime you want to charge the device). - PartyBoost feature not backwards compatible with Connect+. - No speaker phone. - Marginal improvements in sound, that aren't really audible at all. I used to be a big fan of JBL. Had the Flip 3 for many years, and it was great. Have my Xtreme 1 for small events, and it offers amazing (loud) sound for its size. I also got two JBL Flip 4 speakers, bought them from the official JBL outlet store and saved a lot of money by that. But the direction JBL is heading now with their new range of speakers, is a downright joke. I will keep my small JBL collection for as long as possible, but when it's time for me to buy new speakers, I'll have to look elsewhere from then on!

There is actually no reason to buy new jbl speakers like, just the connect+ and connect+, and their speakers on the old one looks and sounds more expensive.
Actually I emailed to them, because I wanted to know if I'll be able to connect flip 5 to my boombox and xtreme 2, and they answered me. They said they are not going to send any firmware updates
If your phone supports Bluetooth 5.0, just connect to as many different speakers as you want... Why whine about a missing button if you can just go into your phones settings ffs.
It’s not as much about money as you think, it’s more than likely Bluetooth latency. As you get better Bluetooth version the less lag and they don’t sink up to the older versions of Bluetooth.
I like bluetooth 🎧,but I'm not gonna be limited to them,I have 👍 sounding wire 🎧,I at least like having a choice between the 2,so forget you 🍎 I'll do just fine with my droid ,at least I have a choice,and I will use both.

Not only did JBL NERF the multi-speaker connectivity, but they did away with the 3.5mm jack and the speaker only has one driver instead of two drivers that the Flip 4 has. Epic fail is what the Flip 5 is. Two thumbs down.
They have and I'm not impressed not enough differences for me to leave flip 4 so I'm staying with it ➕ I can pair it with another flip 4 for less 💰 and blow flip 5 back where it came from. Hopefully flip 6 will be 👍 ☝ up grade not downgrade and certainly change what they messed ☝.
But this one driver in jbl 5 it is not better than 2 drivers in flip4. I know, there is no stereo but i prefer to have 1 better driver than 2 ok drivers
funny thing, my whole neighborhood sticked with old jbl's with the old, first JBL Connect. works good most of the time and it is compatible with existing jbls in my neighborhood.

The only 2 things that JBL has done wrong with the Flip 5, is no aux input. And turning the Flip 5 into a mono speaker. Don't understand that. But, the sound is way beter than the Flip 4. The bass is awesome!!
To make the sound better than the flip 4 what settings do u have to use to do that? Or is it just the default setting for flip 5 in which the bass is just better

probably the same strategy like ue wonderboom not working with myboom and connect up to 150. LG pk3 only able to connect with another pk3 and no app too.. but they started that way.. JBL on the other hand made a u turn... so bad move

Me and my friend have tested these speakers, we both got them to $150 aus, when we got them we went to the park to test the full volume, i found that the bass was better on the flip 5 were on the ue boom 3 there was less base but as we progresed louder we also found that the ue boom 3 whent a little bit louder, also i have only tested the waterproofe function on my flip 5, i found that if you fully submurged the speaker underwater the bluetooth would disconect but persides that, it worked fine. Also the party function on the flip 5 is not at all a problem because you can get apps on apple and android allowing you to play the same music/ audio on any speaker. If you have any questions about the flip 5 you can ask in the comments👌🙏🐢🙂 Edit: i also found that both speakers were not muffled I choose the flip 5 because i was going for a more basy speaker but if you what a louder speaker go for the boom 3, they are pretty much the same exept for the design
I may be changing to a brand that has one J and no B and L like J V C , l already like their boomboxes and so their bluetooth speakers are pretty damn nice too.
I think ill still buy a flip 5 cus I don't have other Jbls to connect it to and I don't like some stuff of the flip 4 however it's cheaper and I actually might buy it. But you people can tell me which one to buy.
I bought the JBl 5 yesterday it sounds amazing for its size and sound quality is great for casual indoor or outdoor music playing, plus I love the camo color. I don’t need more than one portable Bluetooth speaker, connect this connect that sounds good and all but you just waste more money by buying multiple speakers just so you could connect them to each other. If the JBl 3-4 or 5 isn’t as loud for you just buy a bigger one instead. Every time you buy one or two more speakers do the math you spend more money and the company loves you for it.

DRAGON GAMER231! They won't upgrade the old speakers with JBL connect because they are already outdated. Lets say Samsung witch own JBL amoung other speaker companys they always stop giving their phones the android updates after a few years. So because of that i dont think that its a possibility. But the JBL connect+ speakers is the last gen. So i think if anything could happend it is that they would get the update. There is also that possibility that they just make the biggest moneygrab. But it would be cool with a Xtreme playing with my boombox😄👍
The JBL line of BT speakers have always been designed as "mono" only and they never marketed them as stereo. By the way most other BT speakers like Bose, UE, Sony, etc., are designed to be mono. Just because a speaker has two drivers does not automatically make it stereo. Even if you buy a stereo BT speaker it is almost pointless due to the close proximity of the drivers. You will have no effective left/right channel separation so the sound field would suffer tremendously because of it. As far as the BT connect, I agree with you 100%. It sucks that JBL chose to change it.
The reason the "square" Kicker L7 is such a good car sub woofer is because it uses much more speaker cone to push air. It puts out Hella bass with much less power. It makes so much sense that jbl, who claims to be making more bass heavy speakers, would use a single rectangle woofer. Because it pushes more air than both the 10 watt speakers on the flip 4.
Same sentiments; recently bought 2 flip 4's as they can connect to my Charge 3 and have aux in. Don't care for the single driver direction at all, not remotely interested...
And in case nobody else ready the specs the new flip 5 has the same power and uses the same speaker as the charge 4. A rectangle 30 watt 44mm driver. I went to the store and got basically a charge 4 for the price of a flip. Life couldn't be better...
bro DLX people have issues with connect+ after some time they cut in and out which is annoying but I gotta say JBL should have allowed Partyboost connect with connect+ tho

Well for the size of the Flip 5 it makes sense for mono. If you're not satisfied then get a bigger speaker for bigger sound. Easy as that. BTW, no aux input ??
If don't mind the branding, or if you feel like they are milking the money out of you, you can get a much better speaker for the same price from Chinese brands these days. It might not have connect or party feature, but the speaker should be louder to compensate that, and with good bass and clarity and low distortion too. The battery, if you found a good one, should also last you over a day.

Apparently JBL is not only phasing out its older models but also pushing the customers to buy at least two of its latest one to get that stereo output. But if they improve on audio quality then eventually people will adapt. HK Studio 5 is a good example of how great a mono speaker may sound.

Ok... there ist the Tribit MaxSound Plus for 55 €/$ and the Anker Motion+ for regular 100, soundwise in my opinion the Denon Envaya 250 is still king in this class of weight and size. JBL remains true to its lineage - overprized fashion speakers... 🤑
Do it don't be intimidated the speaker has lots of volume. And it's very bass heavy. Just press and hold the minus volume and the Bluetooth button till it beeps and it makes it very very very loud. Buy the speaker don't be silly
