Brilliant! I can't thank you enough. I'm self-taught and I never learned that. I'm saving this video so that I can revisit as necessary.

Did you figure out where to measure the seam from? (I saw your question pop in then couldn't find it again to reply!). Basically, wherever your machine defaults to, that's where you measure from. Some machines have their needle automatically sitting to the left of the universal foot, whilst others have it sitting in the middle. The quickest way to find out is to make sure your needle is in the uppermost position, then switch your machine off and off again. That will put the needle in its default position. Hope that helps :-) Kim x

@@QuiltWithKim thank you. So far I have had problems finding a straight stitch foot for left position needle position for my brother, brother on line has not been any help. I have zz foot that came with it.

Did you manage to get your foot sorted out? So sorry I missed your question; sometimes they get a bit hidden 😖 Kim x

To always find the end of sticky tape, fold a bit under! Can also use bread plastic tags to slip under the end 😊

Know where to buy 1/4” foot for a dedicated left position machine? I have an older brother galaxy 131, which is left position machine when sewing straight stitch.

Hmm, not sure about the quarter inch foot for your particular machine (contact Brother - they will tell you), BUT the good news is that on pretty much all machines there are parallel markings on the base plate just to the right of the presser foot. One of these should say 1/4" (and it may be closer to where the needle is than all the other lines). Those measurements are taken from where the needle is in its default position AND with the standard foot on, so if you run a test stitch line with the edge of your fabric against this quarter inch marker line, you should find that it's a quarter of an inch and you're good to go! Let me know how you get on. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Kim x

I have the new brother bq3100 and even though I can easily change the needle position to the middle, I don’t like the fact that it’s default needle position is on the left. If am to be using the middle position, I’ll have to adjust my seam allowance otherwise, it will be off

Do you know what stitch width an 1/8 inch would be?
@QuiltWithKim

Great question Deanna. I've found that's it more about where you position the fabric under your foot. So, put your stitch width setting to 5.5 to get it to 1/4". Then look at your foot; there should be a metal bit on each side. Look at the *right* hand metal bit/prong. Then line up the edge of the fabric to the inside edge of that metal prong, and that 'should' be 1/8" I use Brother machines and it seems to work on all the Brothers that find a place on my sewing table, but I haven't tried on other brands of machine. So give that a go on a practice piece and then measure the seam allowance. Hopefully it won't be too far off! Do let me know how it goes. Kim.

How do I get a 3/8 inch on my machine
@QuiltWithKim
@QuiltWithKim Год назад
You may see one of the seam allowance markings (the lines on the base plate) for 3/8”. If not, put your needle into its default position, and measure the distance from the needle to the edge of your foot. That’s ‘normally’ (but not all if time!) 5/8”. Now adjust your stitch width a little so that your needle moves to the right. Measure again….and adjust as necessary. It really depends on the type of machine you have, but give that a go and let me know how you get on and I’ll try to help a bit further.
