One tip is when clearing the soil from roots do not rub the rots with your hands 1:13 . Hold the roots under a faucet or in a bowl of water and gently shake. Root hairs are very delicate and while they might look healthy if the root hairs are all broken the roots will struggle to recover.

I have 3 different peppers, gardenia veitchii, tortuga wind hibiscus, strawberries, and a carrot growing out of my fish tank. These were established plants I took out of my garden as the cold was going to kill them. I just pulled them and put them in my tank, dirt and all. I took a tip from landscaping trees, leave the base of the roots exposed to air to help with oxygen absorption. Their is also an air stone directly under them. Everything has new growth, peppers are even growing.

So with a few of pothos plants I actually have a hard time to keeping their roots out of the substrate of the tank, so my aquatic plants have the room. I also have pothos leafs that have adapted to taking oxygen from the water. I have frogs, they are air breathers so it leave more oxygen.

I didn’t know that about the “low light” plants. I thought it meant they needed low light. So I have peace lilies, pothos, and some bamboo in my 100 gl livestock tank with 5 fancy goldfish. I have a tripod stand led grow light setup I purchased on Amazon. It has the capability of red, blue, and warm white and 10 brightness stages. I’ve been keeping it at warm white, brightness 5 for roughly 8 hrs a day. My plants are doing ok, but I notice my peace lilies look like they might be wilting? However one did shoot up a lovely bloom a few months ago. I’ll add that the tank has a plain bottom (no substrate). My plants are all hanging in baskets at the top. Should I add lava rock and/or Leca to the baskets? Should I increase my light brightness or run the red/blue? Ugh there’s so much to learn. Also do you think any of the potho-carrys would fit on the curved rim of the livestock tank? (It’s a 100 gl Rubbermaid from tractor supply) Thank you for any help!
@plantlifeproject
@plantlifeproject 6 месяцев назад
Sounds like an awesome pond! Is it indoors or heated? I noticed a big improvement in my plants when I started keeping my pond water heated to 72F. The goldfish don’t need it but the plants are tropical. This could be a possibility why the lily is wilting. Do you have any filtration or pump? Check out my pond and heater in my recent tour video 👉ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0vNr4XvDOFQ.htmlsi=SolKFEmvpvh3wGdT I wouldn’t worry about adding substrate to plants if they are growing well. Not sure if the pothocarry would fit that curved rim. The dimensions for the hangers are on the website if you want to check them out and measure your rim. Don’t stress about the light, these plants grow wonderfully with bright white light or balanced full spectrum. They are easy and adaptable.

I'm not sure that the existing roots adapt but instead the plant have to grow new "water" roots when you put them in water once taken out of soil. At least that is what I learned when I experimented keeping orchids in semi-hydroponics. It was a controversial. If you start a cutting in water it is hard to transfer them to soil if they started out in water because they have to grow a different kind of root. I found it is easier to root cuttings in soil using rooting hormone if I want to keep them in soil. I keep jars of water with cuttings (plus a little rooting hormone) and then can use them in the tank or I keep glass vases with rooted cuttings in them.

Can you put a filter medium bag with a aqua soil mix in the planter basket? Then you would have soil close for some roots then other roots go to the soil in the tank. One more question will the terrestrial plants take over the tank to the detriment of aquarium plants. Thank you 🌼
@plantlifeproject
@plantlifeproject Год назад
The aqua soil in the planters is a good idea, especially in a tall tank and it’s one I have used, but the roots do eventually grow out of the planter anyway (in my experience). I have had difficulty growing water column plants like hornwort, guppy grass, frogbit in some cases, with riparian plants because of competition for nutrients (I believe) but I can still grow aquatic plants rooted in the substrate.

Hello -- I wonder whether basil would be suitable for a wet substrate. Have you (or has anyone among the viewership) tried it?
@plantlifeproject
@plantlifeproject 2 дня назад
It can grow well in a wet substrate, it is grown hydroponically by many people. My experience has been that it still needs drainage, so growing it in a container where it is partially in water so roots can still get oxygen but also grow in the water.

How can I secure my lights high enough to light up the houseplants? I've been trying to figure something out for a while now. I was thinking maybe putting little poles for lights to clip on to but I have no idea. Most of my tanks are on standalone stands if that helps any

In your experience, what's the best way for getting monstera started in an aquarium? Intuition is telling me just cuttings right in the water, so that it doesn't have to adapt from its terrestrial roots, but curious what you've actually seen

Idk if all of these would work. But my question is, what do u use as an aquarium cover? I just put together a few sections of polycarbonate pieces running front to back w polycarbonate stick on hinges, , I can move them over or remove 1 set (of 2 panels), would I need a left to right support beam of some kind? Sorry lots of questions I'm glad I ran across this video! I'll check out ur other videos! Thanks for this!!!

@@plantlifeproject hi! I wish id bought that type of polycarbonate! I bought the clear single layered 1/4in thick polycarbonate from Amazon. I'd bought a different size before n boy it's hard to cut w a jigsaw. So this time instead of a 12in x 36in for my 20L tank, I bought 4 panels at 8in x 24in for my 40L, then bought 6 sticky polycarbonate hinges. 2 panels I stuck together side by side w 3 hinges n did this twice. Like I=I I=I so the center isn't hinged. N I didn't cut it down to the 18in depth, left it at 24in cuz there no way 😅 so they just lay across the top of the tank. N I can't access the back of the stand so I have 2 HOB (aqueon 30 & 50) on either side n for the moment I also have 2 sponge filters. May be overkill but I have a very well fed poops alot fancy ryukin! Right now I have some otocinclus cleaning the tank n there's some neon tetras. But I'm gonna have to move the tetras cuz my ryukin accidentally got a fish head in his mouth when it was feeding time haha😅 they ran into eachother. They both turned n ran into eachother 😂. Anyway sorry this is so long n thank u for the help!!

Oh the 40L I just got beginning June n had to do a fish in cycling. Didn't think Id be moving end of april (before that I had the 20L setup) (didn't know what parameters or cycling was prior to june) in the old apt but started losing fish. I was also told I could have my ryukin w neon tetras and mollies in the tank together! I did by a 10g too cuz the mollies were nipping the other fish. But cuz of all the stress (bought all fish in april) 1 ryukin n 3 mollies died so I found a gal who would take the last 2 mollies. I do want to setup the 20L for the tetras n some guppies, but I have to figure out space in my new apt. I'm in a wheelchair so I have to have room to move about n my living rm is smaller than my last, but gained a 2nd bdrm for my adult child haha

I think one planting method that might be failing you is dropping plants with their entire root system submerged. There are certain plants that will tolerate this, such as pothos, but most plants have aerial roots in the higher section near the stem. Submerging these roots for a prolonged period is going to kill a lot of plants unless the plant is very young or just taking root. If you find a lot of plants die off after a few weeks or months of having their entire root system being submerged then this might have a lot of explanatory power. To get a grasp on aerial roots I think the best crash course is learning about the fundamentals of the Kratky hydroponic method.

Thank you, great video. I have read so much on house plants in fish tanks thriving but anything I try, dies. I just pulled my spider plants; (which were previously in a container of water for weeks and had huge root growth) out of my tank because the roots were rotting. The only difference would be the temperature of the water. The tank is 79/80. Is this too warm for the plants? It's a pretty normal temp for fish tanks. I'm so confused....:/ The tank parameters are great. Fish are thriving.
