If you have a question about a play, drop a timestamp (MM:SS format) in with it. Makes it MUCH easier for me to respond!

Question - when ruling if a pivot is allowed after a jump stop, the question would be when the dribble was terminated? If the dribble is terminated in the air then a pivot is allowed after the jump stop? For example.. all of the jump stop and pivots in the Villanova video from 2:22 to 3:12 are all legal in high school as well? Is that correct? Lots of great jump stop clips. It would be great to have clips on euro steps as well as spin move travels. In my experiences, we are not good at calling either of those types of plays correctly.

Just watched again, on bonus play, the ball can be seen coming back up from the floor right by #30's right leg after the power dribble by the catching post player. Great footage!

Love it! I would love to see a video on any play where the ball handler dribbles, jumps off one, gathers IN the AIR, then lands in a staggered 1 - 2. Do they have a pivot foot? I would think they would because the gather occurs with no feet established and so their first step of the 1 - 2 would be the established pivot. But please do a video on this! I'd be interested to hear your thoughts!
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 2 года назад
You are right. If the player grabs ball mid-air, the first foot down would be the pivot. That is how a player could successfully execute a spin move too.
@briantwitchell8060
@briantwitchell8060 2 года назад
With the bonus play, the post player takes a power dribble w/ her right hand (almost completely blocked by teammate #30, but look between #30's feet- it looks like a dribble) and re-establishes pivot as the left foot. I think that is what the video shows which makes it legal. Without the dribble, yeah, it is just sloppy footwork and switching of the pivot foot. But great footage showing how easy it is to get blocked out from what really happened. Thanks for all you do Greg to get us thinking.

So one foot hopping to two feet, that’s a legal jumpstop? It’s the last step that creates the violation.

It looked to me that the player in play #2 traveled before going to the ground. He took of and his pivot came down and he did not release until after he put his hand down. The hand touch was legal, but officials ignored the illegal movement before that.

Play 4-When the L rotates would you rather have the C not rotate until the after the shot. Seems the me the C is in great position. If there was a foul on the shot would have been in great position as C rather than rotating to T position.

Play 3. This is a slight variation of this play. Kids are now swinging over with one hand and not putting two hands on the ball for another step compared to this. When has the dribble ended in that scenario? I'm looking at hand under the ball or over the head, is this correct? I'm a coach/ trainer and I want to make sure I'm teaching this correctly.
@BetterOfficials

Right. Hand under the ball terminates the dribble.

Greg, I have a question about play 2. The dribbler establishes his right foot as his pivot on the gather, then replaces that right foot. Isn't that the travel?
@Gaitwaychiropracticpage
@Gaitwaychiropracticpage 2 года назад
Greg in the bonus play with the initial blue post player travelling that you say was missed, isn't there a dribble between the right foot being pivot to when she ends her dribble with the left foot being pivot? It's hard to tell from this angle but it does appear she dribbles 1 time.
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 2 года назад
You are 100% correct. I had missed that dribble I just saw it when presenting the play over the weekend. Time to get the editing skills out and pare that one away. I guess I did not have an open look on that play.

The Bonus Play erroneously ruled a travel has been scrubbed from the vid. Missed the dribble in there!

Jump stop on two feet no pivot or step through. Establish a pivot and you can step through. Is that summed up correctly?
@robgray_

22:08 does that left foot not come up and then back down prior to that step through? In real time, I am not sure it would be detectable to be fair.

If play 3 is a travel then most layups, euro-steps, step backs, and the rest are too. It’s a timing thing, play 3 is a motion that we allow in the game all the time. If his pick-up/gather were earlier than a travel is fine, but that rarely happens. It’s almost always near simultaneous with the jump-which we allow. My two cents.
@briantwitchell8060
@briantwitchell8060 2 года назад
I agree with you Michael, running at live speed it certainly looked like the gather happened after the left foot was down then just like when you learn to do a layup step right and left and shoot. But slow-mo shows the left foot not down yet so technically a travel. But I agree with you seeing it at game speed looks good to me.
@stevelatimer8719

@@briantwitchell8060 If the left foot is on the ground when the dribble ends (the ball is gathered), the left foot becomes the pivot foot. If it is lifted from the floor and then comes back down ("...step right and left and shoot") it is a travel
@MaydayAggro
@MaydayAggro Год назад
Most layups are not. Most step backs are because players catch the ball, step off the pivot, then replant the pivot behind the 3pt line. This is not just a ticky-tack call. It's the definition of a travel. Players watch the NBA and assume they can make the same move.

What happens if he lands first with one foot and then with the other? (clearly not simultaneously). The first foot landed is his pivot foot......can he then lift his pivot foot (standing on the other) and shot the ball? (nice video)

Please explain the traveling violation on play # 3. I thought it is legal, but it’s not. Thank you.
@ronrutjr

according to your interpretation, it is impossible to have a pivot after a jump stop. that is not true. I would argue that all these ended the dribble in the air and landed on 2 which means they have not established a pivot. and they could have landed 1-2. if you feel they ended the dribble with the foot on the floor then, yes, you can't have a pivot. if it is not an early pickup then it is probably a catch/end of dribble in the air. the jump stop rule says catch the ball in the air land on 1 jump then land on 2. then you don't have a pivot. remember. it says, catch in the air. then 2 actions have to happen. If I jump off 1, end dribble in the air, then land on 2. I have only completed on part of the actual jump stop. I have a pivot after that.
@dylangraham5517
@dylangraham5517 6 месяцев назад
If the player has control of the ball (I.e. not a discontinued dribble), then you cannot have a dribble terminate in the air. Play 5 is a great example of that. Dribble is terminated when he jumps off his left foot into the jump stop; rule 4 section 44 article 2 clearly states that if one foot is on the floor, you can jump off that foot and land simultaneously on both feet to avoid traveling, but neither foot can become a pivot foot.

Yes. Catch and land simultaneously there is no pivot foot established. Pivoting legal.

I thought play 3 was not a walk, it is a gather step and you get the two steps after that. I have watched a lot of videos on the gather step recently so I can get this right, and many have said it is a legal play because in order to have a gather step both hands must be on the ball. Help me out here, please.
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 2 года назад
Allen, we are referring here to National Federation of High School Basketball Rules. If you are referring to things like a 'gather step', you are not referring to NFHS. Maybe NBA?
@sinman3602
@sinman3602 2 года назад
We need to eliminate terms such as "gather step" or "two steps" from our vocabulary when discussing these types of plays in NFHS. There is no rulebook support for those terms/phrases and can be misleading - there are situations where "taking two steps" is a travel and other times where it is not. We must rely on Rule 4-44 and understand which foot (if any) is the pivot foot, or if neither foot can be a pivot. That is the key to ruling correctly on these plays. Also the term "gather" is misleading; when dealing with a player who was dribbling, we must rely on Rule 4-15-4 to determine when the dribble ended.
@pamagee2011
@pamagee2011 2 года назад
The NBA has it right about traveling. The way that NCAA and HS refs call traveling detracts from the game. Calling traveling on a player beginning their dribble because their first step is taken with the wrong foot is an over-interpretation of the intent of the rule.
