If you have a question about a play, drop a timestamp (MM:SS format) in with it. Makes it MUCH easier for me to respond!

Greg, New subscriber here. Your channel is a phenomenal resource, thanks. I just wanted to say that your play reviews are SO MUCH BETTER with game video clips. This is especially true for action like screening/blocking, traveling and player control issues like play #1 here. I'm sure its a big editing lift to include them, but the difference is huge. Thanks again for great work.

Great job showing spin moves at different speeds. I believe, by rule, they are almost always illegal. In each of these the BHD ends the dribble as he turns his back to the basket. The only way to get back to facing the basket is to lift and replant the pivot. If the BHD keeps the dribble the move is legal. That would be tough in traffic.

At 31:30 I would argue that this is legal by rule. his dribble didn't end until both hands were on the ball. Technically he could have continued his dribble if he didn't. When both hands were on the ball, both feet were off the floor. now, either foot can be the pivot. in this case, left foot becomes pivot. that is why the ncaa is getting more benefit of the doubt with this type of spin with the delayed ending of dribble. in the last spin move at 35:29, he clearly picks it up with both hands early. Even at 28:58, the pick up is later but is close. But you stop the video as soon as the spin starts and I don't believe that is where you determine end of the dribble. she is pulling the ball and has not placed the other hand on the ball yet. she is under the ball or have the ball pinned to her body. It still may be a travel but the dribble ended later. This is what I am being told by all the officials here and the intrepretation fits. especially when you see what the ncaa is saying and the rule is the same.

Illegal spin moves are definitely harder to identify when done by fast players! Another stellar editing job! #ReplayCrew

I told my son's coach to ask every official this year how they will be interpreting timeout calls during held balls. A ton of refs get it wrong and a ton of coaches try to exploit that ignorance. You're going to see officials this year who got the point of emphasis memo and want to do it the right way and officiate a game right after a crew that didn't get the memo and does it the wrong way. I will be bringing this up in every pregame with coaches during my officiating schedule this winter. Don't ask for a time out during a held ball because I will ignore you. Possession goes to the arrow, you may call a timeout at the dead ball, and if you don't like it call NFHS.

on play 1 - when the center calls a held ball and the lead calls a TO, what was the outcome? seems the center official had primary responsibilities and this was not the leads call - especially when he was out of position

Greg this is amazing content. I am a subscriber now but wanted to see if we could use some of these videos for training purposes ONLY back in Indiana. Let me know if that is permissible. Matt

What is the best way for an official to see the whole play when running with the players for a fast break situation? My focus tends to be upper body, defensive foul watching so slowing down (in my mind) and seeing the pivot foot is something I want to improve on.
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 2 года назад
Hi Jenna! If the ball-handler is ahead of the defense give almost 100% of your attention to the defense in that scenario.

Was the call from the center on play #1 for a jump ball correct? Defensive player was merely touching the ball with one hand and did not have equal control?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 2 года назад
I hear you. I suspect the player had a hand on the ball and the player in white was pulling the ball to his chest meaning that the defensive player had nowhere to go when the officials felt that that created a situation with players on the floor that rough play may ensue. Tough to say he was wrong given the angle that we have versus the angle that he had.
