Fun fact: Team Meat was directly involved with the Super Tofu Boy game! They sent messages at Peta, pretending to be angry haters of Super Meat Boy, and purposely misdirected them by convincing them that Meat Boy is literal meat!
@@IanMalcolm99 are we even sure they're real? it might just be the current climate talking but the longer I think about them, the more they sound completely made up as a joke.
Here's another one for ya!: The secondary villain of NO MORE HEROES 3 Damon Riccitiello was named after the former ceo of EA John Riccitiello. The creator of NO MORE HEROES Suda51 worked with EA on shadows of the damned when John was ceo and infamously had a very rough time in regards to creative differences.
Glad you mentioned that Art of Fighting was made by the same folks (like, the same people, rather than the same company) that made Street Fighter. It always kinda rubs me the wrong way when people say Art of Fighting is a rip-off of Street Fighter, in the same manner that it rubs me the wrong way when people say Bayonetta is a knock-off of Devil May Cry.
Alternative lesson learned: DO piss off Edmund McMillen, as he'll create a character in one of his games just to make fun of you. But hey, you'll be in one of his games!
did he insult him or show his face this video? i didnt seem to catch it, i was actually like wtf did he not mention him for once i wasnt sure i wanted to right a comment but then i saw a complete lack of comments about it so i was like. wtf.
I mean anyone with a slight appreciation of games these days should hate him. He’s basically Todd Howard but with no money(rightfully so) to back up his ideas
Okay Larry, come clean. Ever since people noticed that every time you say "But, hello you!" in the intro that there's always racing game footage and started talking about it, you've slowly but surely added more and more footage of exclusively racing games into the intro and we've reached the point where the entire thing is racing game footage...in a video about devs trolling. Brilliant, but please tell us it was planned!
@@Larry Speaking of racing, I know this Japanese racing game series known as "Choro Q" that is very lesser known in Western territories, mostly due to the fact that they often go under different titles, e.g. Choro Q HG, Choro Q HG 2 and Shin Combat Choro Q are "Penny Racers", "Road Trip Adventure" and "Seek and Destroy" in Europe and Oceania respectively. Most Choro Q games like Choro Q Works are Japan-exclusive, but lot of them are very good games.
Interesting retaliation from SNK: Yuri Sakazaki has frequently taken moves from Street Fighter characters. My favorite being the Raging Demon in KOF 2001.
I know some have thought over the years that SNK was just "ripping off" Capcom and Street Fighter, but the reality, as described here, is that it's an alternate branch of evolution of the original concept because one of the original creators joined SNK. While I loved Street Fighter 2, I was also turned off by the stagnation in that series for a while. Meanwhile, I really liked the concepts SNK was putting into their fighting games. When Street Fighter Alpha came out, while the sprite work was great, I didn't love the art direction. Still, really cool seeing the Alpha clips back to back with King of Fighters. The sprite work in both is quality. King Of Fighters still looks amazing to me after all these years. I fell in love with the game back in the day, despite it being right next to a Street Fighter 3 machine. The SNK style just spoke to me in those days.
Thanks for the vod. Fun fact about 9:03: Shingo was originally going to be a Sakura knock off but since Kyo already had a fiancee, they turned him into a guy. And SNK went bankrupt but managed to do SNK Chaos, which was bought by a Chinese company, (which is why it's called Playmore) THEN they separated when they got enough money which is why they are called SNK again.
Playmore was almost a decade before the chinese acquisition, and Playmore was founded by SNK's founder Eikichi Kawasaki, it was a way to recover his brand from Aruze after SNK's bankrupcy.
The thing is, there were still Chinese shareholders after SNK's bankruptcy, so Eikichi didn't really get them out until recently. It's sort of like the situation with Guilty Gear.
If i remember correctly, Playmore almost got bankrupt around the mid 2000's and i think it was around this time that a chinese company bought the majority share.
Except when hyper-SJW devs insert characters in their games to try and enrage “racist/misogynistic/homophobic/whatever trolls and haters”; or when “””anti-SJW””” or “””””””””centrist””””””””devs do the same thing to “trigger the libtards”, right?
I've always enjoyed when games did this to pot shot one another. Reminds me of the time when donkey Kong country and Earthworm Jim of all things made spoofs of each other within each other's game. Donkey Kong country 2 had earthworm Jim's laser gun next to a pair of shoes akin to sonics next to a trash can, and Earthworm Jim had a code that let you softly put on a donkey Kong head Sprite right over jim. It's crazy business but I love it all the same!
i kind of love the internal infighting that donkey kong country had where they just stopped featuring donkey kong himself as a playable character in the second and third games because nintendo were pissing off rare so much
@@caucasoidape8838 at least he even does something, diddy kong just kind of runs a bit faster and maybe jumps slightly higher, he doesn't have any special ability like dixie's hovering or breaking floors open
Fun fact: In Postal 2: Paradise Lost, there’s a secret room where you can find a Postal 3 dev who hanged himself because of how terrible the game turned out to be
There's also references to other game companies - BullFish Interactive in Apocalypse Weekend is a counterpart to Whiptail Interactive, Running With Scissors' former publisher, the CEO of which you at one point go gun down to get their gold master back, and PU Games in Paradise Lost, a not-EA with a Tim Schafer stand-in you also gun down.
8:05 Actually, no, Edmund McMillen has come clean and said no, Judas was not meant to troll Phil. He said so once, but now claims it was a joke. Judas in the game has a fez simply to make him stand out. Edit: Okay, I suppose he's probably lying....
Phil's traitorous nature goes much further than this, but that's a subject for a different video. But the Fez is a stereotypical accessory worn by the Freemasons, rumoured to be pulling the strings of the World Leaders in real life, so the Fez is appropriate for a betrayer of faith regardless of whether it was done to spite Phil or not...
@@ichoffski4707 Him doing it out of anger/spite only to later say "actually no I didn't mean it like that" makes more sense than it being a coincidence, and is honestly a tale as old as time.
Sure Dan was made to be HATED but in reality, people just cannot appreciate the sheer raw power he represents, his gabouken literally destroys realms whenever it disappears
fun secret programming fact: Dan's moves have the highest priority in every game he's in (so if both fighters hit at the exact same frame, Dan will win out), and if you counter Akuma/Gouki's Shungokusatsu with the Dangokusatsu it will instantly kill him, even at full health. By design
I haven't played it since it was a new release, but I remember getting stuck on the slalom in the garage, I had to use cheats to skip the tutorial lol.
15:30 You missed the bit in San Andreas where on the Madd Dogg's Rhyme Book mission they call out 'Refractions' for releasing the crap that Driv3r was :P
And Larry may have gotten it wrong. It wasn't SNK's Art Of Fighting that pissed off Capcom. But rather, it was SNK's King Of Fighters 94 that pissed off Capcom. This can be seen in the cutscene, where Rugal Bernstein(the final boss of KOF 94) brags about his hobby of making statues of *"fighters"* he defeated. You'll notice that 3 of the statues looks like Guile,Ryu and Akuma. To add further proof, Rugal and Guile has a funny intro in Capcom Vs SNK that calls back to the KOF94 cutscene. Both Rugal and Guile destroy the statue that looks like Guile.
The story of SNK and Capcom rivalry is amazing, they're the best Frenemies, and you all know how many crossover games they made as well. Try that with another company and they will sue your ass 90 times, until they harvest your organs as a final step.
The same "frenemies" connotation can also be said of DMA Design/Rockstar North and Reflections, as Shadow of the Beast 3 features David Jones (one of DMA's co-founders who created Lemmings and GTA) in the "special thanks" portion of the game's end credits.
@@Inriri Doubtful, it quite ended in a less interesting note than anything. At that time fighting games were losing a lot of momentum and that was one of the main reasons as for why, aside the "blandness" Many people barely even remembers CvS1 and 2. Arcades were starting to go extinct as well, I faintly remember some CvS1 and 2 cabinets but people were putting money on computer time to play counter strike, that was the "online boom" around here, poor cabinets they were one by one pull apart. Now in this moment of pandemic they could try something together again and I'm certain it will catch people's attention by a lot, with better technology and the duo's affiliation to mix stories, could be something brand new, with the artstyle of SNK and Capcom's playability it could be even a new brand fighting game certain to be well recognizable, it is a new golden age for gaming nowadays so many titles coming up and exciting develops that I can't wait to try out. Plus it didn't matter on these oopsies with SNK and Capcom. Capcom screwed over itself as karma over the past years anyways.
@@Max-ej4oh That's a lot of words to say "I don't know what I'm talking about." Capcom got all of the profits from CVS1/2 and screwed SNK over by forcing them to rush SVC Chaos out the door. >Capcom screwed over itself as karma over the past years anyways You wot. Are you one of those people that won't stop whining about SFV?
Since James "Buster" Douglas was born on April 7 1960 he wasn't created on a cold autumn evening but rather a mild early summer one. Oh god I feel so petty.
Chubby Gristle came to mind considering the devs had to deal with a parking attendant. I wonder if that attendant ever heard of Chubby Gristle. 3:35 It would’ve been so cool if Punch-Out featuring Mike Tyson was put on the E-Shop as to promote Mike Tyson Mysteries. Even if we did have the other version that didn’t have Tyson. 5:29 I remember playing it since I didn’t have a machine to run Super Meat Boy on. Then I found the Meat Boy Flash game on Newgrounds 10:17 I remember when someone mentioned how Johnny Cage started out as a middle finger to Jean Claude Van Damme and then transitioned to beating Scorpion and Sub Zero and making love with Sonya, the guy said it would be like if Dan Hibiki bested Ryu, Ken, and Akuma, and slamming Chun-Li so pregnant that their kid becomes the new main character.
Edmund’s trolling levels are OBSCENE. Any Isaac fan would know how many times they’ve gotten a bad run because of the RNG. Also, Larry Jr. is a reference to Larries’ Lament, the fifth boss in Super Meat Boy. I don’t know why his name is Larry, though, considering that’s my first name Edmund could be trolling ME.
The best thing about Moira is she is a super out of place reference to a niche anime character. Very blatant & detailed reference, too. No one has yet to comment on it after a decade of Fallout 3 releasing tho...that's just how deep cut a reference she is.
Not only Dan's taunting is based off of AoF, but his fireball and DP as well: AoF's main mechanic is a "spirit gauge" AKA super bar that you can charge and is consumed by your super moves. When your bar's low, Ryo's fireball is as short-ranged as Dan's is. Not only that, but SNK also didn't mind slapping back with the introduction of Yuri Sakazaki, Ryo's little sister as a playable character: In almost every KOF game she has one different move taken off of Capcom's shoto gallery. Also, fun fact: Whenever Dan is in an SNK-developed crossover with Capcom they actually run with the joke (example: moves based off of Ryo's supers, interactions that confuse him with said Robert, etc.)
is "But, HELLOOOOooo yooou.."" a British thing or is it just larry thing? for some reason its always sounded weird to me. Not as bad as Jack Septic Eyes outro does on the odd chance i decide to click a video like if hes playing a spyro game or something.
To be fair though, it is ironic Capcom fired back in response to Ryo & Robert Garcia ripping off their characters yet I don't think SNK has done anything about Capcom blatantly ripping off their character Yuri with Sakura 🤣
And it may not be SNK's Art Of Fighting that pissed off Capcom. But rather, it was SNK's King Of Fighters 94. If you manage to reach Rugal Bernstein(the final boss of KOF94), the cutscene has Rugal bragging about making statues of *"fighters"* he *"defeated".* You'll then notice that 3 of the statues looks like Guile,Ryu and Akuma. So you can see SNK was intentionally mocking Capcom. Capcom took notice when Dan appeared in Street Fighter Alpha(released in 1995) as intended to be a mockery of the Kyokugenryu practicioners(Ryo,Takuma,Robert and Yuri). Further proof of KOF94 is what pissed off Capcom, can be seen in Rugal's and Guile's intro in Capcom Vs SNK, where they both destroy a statue of Guile(which is a funny call back to the Rugal cutscene in KOF94).
Just to note something: contrary to popular belief, the devs at SNK and Capcom already knew what they were going to "do to each other" and they were actually friends... They even had group dinners, because back then it was common to switch companies due to not having enough pros or simply disagreeing with Top Management (like what happened with DC and Marvel, who were direct neighbours). The ones that were at each other throats were the Board of said companies (who actually knew about their dinner meetings and were against it) and the Media back then were also fanning the flames (for selling purposes, of course). Ryu, Ken, Gouki, Sakura, Dan, Dan's father (in Super Puzzle Fighter), Sean, Gouken, Evil Ryu, Evil Ken, Evil Sakura, Shin Gouki, Allen and Kairi (from Fighting Ex), Oni, Kage... Even Capcom itself parodies its characters with its large list of Shotoclones 😏 (I actually think that when Capcom is lacking in roster they just do a paint job over Ryu and toss us a "new" character🤣🤣)
Wow, I never had any idea what was up with the hat on Judas. The funny thing is unlike some of these other characters, he's actually a really good playable character and not a purposely terrible one.
Speaking of Dan, the first time I ever played street fighter 4 was with my friends that were WAY into street fighter. I picked Dan, because I knew I was gonna suck so I figured, ok, I'll pick Dan because why not? I ended up button mashing my way to Dan's best combo and murdered my friend that was arguably the best out of the three of them lmfao. That was after getting my ass handed to me for most of the round.
I'm pretty sure Ryo is supposed to an homage to Ryu and not a shot taken. He's not a joke character like the others on this list. Dan on the other hand feels more like a parody of Steven Segal; a guy who thinks he's hot stuff in martial arts, but is clearly a big loser that no one cares about. So that's why Driv3r was so bad. The developers were so concerned with trying to get back at Rockstar that they had to rush the game out so the world could see Timmy. Too bad Rockstar had the last laugh in the end.
8:50 there's also the fact that Phil Fish was known to have publicly beefed with the co-creator of Fez and was accused of stealing the idea from underneath him
That Buster Douglas segment, I don't think it's true. It's merely a case of signing a name to promote a game. James Douglas talked about it in an old Ring magazine as well back in the day.
A very recent example: the character Damon Ricotello from No More Heroes III whose last name is a dig at John Riccitiello, the former CEO of EA, who was interfering with the development of Shadows of the Damned, a game made by No More Heroes' creator Suda51.
I just realized that you snuck the EA logo into the PETA logo. That's genius. Also it's just funny to me that Smash Bros. now has Ryo as a Mii costume to go along with Terry. Also Dan Hibiki is the ultimate Chad. Best Street Fighter character full stop.
Strange how nobody, ever talks about KOF 97's Shingo Yabuki, was the inmediatez response to Dan, He even has the same haircut from Sakura from SFA2. And of course, was also a kind of clumsy student
@@lianaverwood9810 I can see that, although personally so far Piranha Plant is the only Ultimate DLC I've had any hype over whatsoever. All the others so far have been either from games I've never played, or games I didn't enjoy when I did play them. But I also hate Waluigi, so my own example doesn't particularly apply to myself either. lol
Am I alone in thinking Dan Hibiki is actually a pretty good character to use? Yeah, he's not good at distance fighting, but up close, he's pretty good.
Depends, usually even on that he kind of sucks, rarely can do combos and most of his buttons are a bit stubby and slow. But then he sometimes gets things like the most powerful super in the game he's in (MvC2, SvC), can almost get you in infinites (SFV), or he's just pretty good (SFIV)
Let me tell you about the Scorpia enemy from Might and Magic 3. It was named after a video game journalist who gave Might and Magic 2 a low score. And it looks like a morbidly obese drag queen with gray skin.
I always suspected Hawk in Soldier of Fortune to be one. You fight your way through numbers of terrorists are right at the end of the level, your supposed ally jumps straight out of the shadows, without warning. Instinctively I shot him and that fails the level.
Remember when Chris-chan made a version of his teacher, Mary Lee Walsh, in Soul Calibur so he could beat her up? Yeeeah, thank Godbear he never got anywhere near a game's development. It would consist solely of people that have wronged him, like his Shitchu comics. Also a stage where you, our brave hero, get to bang Barbara.
You gotta love some game developers who like to aggravate others when it comes to making a characters in their games, just so they could mock others in their way. I gotta say I love it.
