That's not the story of Candy Crush though. Match-3 had been copied a hundred times by then and Bejeweled might not be the original one either. Candy Crush is, however, an exact ripoff of a game a single developer made for his daughter. And by exact I mean the visuals (candy) look 90% the same. To make matters worse, instead of accepting the blame they tried to sue him instead. As in "you didn't get yours trademarked so even if your submission to the Play Store is older we're still gonna call you out on stealing from us. So pay us." I don't know why this went under the radar. But then again a lot of controversies do. Just recently I read the final statement in the Mudrunner/Spintires debacle: it changed my perspective. But chances are, most people won't read that part and only remember the early claims...

One thing I learned through life, especially in my writing career, is the most important teaching of all creative endeavors. Don't worry about being original. Be authentic. Originality isn't always as good. Especially if it is an empty husk of an idea. Don't worry about copying or repeating. Worry about not doing things your way.

@@Chaos89P man. In college I learned originality is impossible in modern essays. Originality means no sources. Therefore no sources cited. Therefore not acceptable in modern academia. Of you ask me that is flawed and prevents Eureka moments and intelectual breakthroughs. However such is the broken state of academia. It is in colleges where originality is less desired. Especially in humanities. Arts are a place where originality is allowed. However it often comes at the expenses of authenticity, creativity, and beauty. Resulting in an empty beer bottle with a turd stuck in it being justified as art.

Talking about that, i think there should be more Minecraft like games. It's just a matter of looking at mods and see how different the game can feel. Modders should make their own games (if they have the time and resources) and not depend on a game where an update can outdate their mods. Also looking at the meta of Minecraft or the endless suggestions that look fine but doesn't fit with the game, there is plenty of room to make things differently.

Still, it's not what I would call a direct knock-off but more taking an underdeveloped gameplay concept and doing something new with it. The crafting system for example, one of the most important parts of Minecraft, wasn't even remotely present in Infiniminer. Instead you just made new blocks with a certain amount of mined metals, no recipes and little variation. It also was meant to be a team-based game with teams competing for a high-score, and it was the playerbase that chose to ignore that aspect and instead started using it as a proto-Minecraft.

Crush the castle must have had multiple rip offs. The movement of the collapsing structures and soldiers dying looks just like Ricochet games I use to play on newgrounds. And damn was it addictive.

Yeah both that and Zuma were not really unique, though Zuma was more of a ripoff with the conveyor-belt-bead-string concept and the similar ones snapping together. Basically the open nature of free flash games meant tons and tons of people programmed up similar puzzles. and simple puzzle games have pretty much always been like that going back to the oldest arcades, everyone felt free to rip those off and just do something new with them.

@@thijsbergman2424 Crash the Castle was also not the original, they borrowed the idea from the developer of the game called "Castle Clout" back in 2008. And it was also probably not original, because the concept is VERY basic.

@@nikenit Remember those flash games from way back when the objective would be to fling your character or projectile just as far as possible, hoping it would hit things on its downward trajectory to propel it further. I think it has to be possible to pinpoint when this basic and overused concept first got combined with a collapsible structure. Someone who has kept track of newgrounds and similar websites should have a basic idea of this

@@mattblaster2378 I think the influence the game has had is definitely worth noting but I too am quite sick of it. What's also a shame is that... the developers don't really know what to do next. The game gets updates, but it really seems to just be in improving the graphical effects (making water look pretty etc) or adding another obscure animal to the games increasingly gigantic roster of tameable animals. Every other part of updates feels even more limited. It's as if the developers don't know what to do with the IP, and this is further evidenced by the fact that every attempt to make another Minecraft game that isn't the original has been met with mixed-negative reception. I feel like Minecraft simultaneously inspired more people to be creative, while it's developers (while talented) have nowhere to go, because their leader's original idea was not that original in the first place... Sounds what it would be like working for Peter M in the 2010s ☹️

I remember playing Crush the Castle! My brother showed it to me when we were kids. Makes sense as to why he got into Angry Birds. Edit: ZUMA is also similar to a minigame on Webkinz (which I bet ripped off of the same thing). I wonder which of the two came first.

Infiniminer looks like it was made on the Build Engine, wouldn't be surprised if ID or 3D Realms released a game like this back in the day.

In 1995 Ken Silverman, the creator of the build engine, wrote a "game" called CUBES5, it has 6dof movement but most important, you can add o remove blocks in a level made of blocks. The game and the source is in his page

Not really, build didn't have proper perspective, you wouldn't be able to properly look up and down which is necessary in a game like infiniminer, plus games in engines like that heavily rely on the geometry being completely static to work, even the "lights" can't really move.

I think minecraft changes enough of the game to not be called a "Rip-Off". Reminds me of people calling any first person shooter a doom clone back in the day. I guess early minecraft development could be considered a ripoff though, before the game had many features.

Big difference is that there were only two games in existence with that premise in minecraft's case. In doom's case, it also included ID software's previous game wolfenstein and many other similar games (which one could make a case of following wolfenstein's lead)

Well in defence of doom clones, they had original maps different weapons, and the art most of the times was different. Same with the flood of one on one fighters.

Puzzloop did see a GBC release as Ballistic from Infogrames, a title still on my wish list. Also, the whole gaming industry is built upon the 'one-up-manship' spoken of. Atari's Pong was improved upon by the 1-p game Breakout. Taito raised the bar by having opponents that fight back in their game Space Invaders. Namco added enemy formations for Galaxian and its sequel Galaga.

Angry Birds was a line of dog toys first, with recognizably similar character designs. The old lady who came up with them couldn't get them to sell. Then Rovio made a deal with her to use them in their Crush the Castle rip-off, and she never saw a dime. Two years ago, I spotted Angry Birds dog toys in the pet store. The new designs, from the games. I was having such a good day too...

Larry overstates the comparison, though. They have the same block based deformation mechanics, but the rest of the game has nothing else in common.

@@flametitan100 minecraft classic was basically a direct clone. Notch merely expanded on the idea into what MC is known for. If Zach didnt lose motivation and kept developing inifiminer, minecraft may never became popular.

@@SuperPickle15 Have you actually played Infinimer as intended? Infiniminer was developed with the intention of being a Red versus Blue PvP game with the ability to build structures being secondary. Now, nobody actually _played_ it as intended, and minecraft capitalized on that by making a game that actually matched what people wanted from infiniminer (i.e. a sandbox building game.) Edit: Oh, and Zachtronics didn't merely lose motivation; the source code leak meant there were so many competing versions of the game and so many hacks that it would've taken *far* too much work to make updates _and_ push those updates to all the people running forks. As a result, he simply decided to cut his losses and move on to another project.

As an avid flash game player in the 2000's, I've been pissed at Angry Birds for ripping off Crush The Castle ever since it came out. Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed 👍 It was actually the first thing I thought of when I read the video title but I was surprised to see it actually included

Saint's Row isnt really a knock off, it's a CLONE per se, but it's unique enough to be it's own entity, for example you are part of a Gang in Saint's Row while in GTA you're part of an organized crime syndicate, in that regard alone i'd say that GTA: San Andreas was a knock off of Saint's Row.

I wouldn't really call Minecraft an Infiniminer clone. Though it was in its very early stages, it had very quickly gone beyond the scope of Infiniminer even in 2009 with much better controls, user interface, graphics (much more appealing), and world generation.

"Flappy Bird" was a rip-off of the Flash game "Helicopter". It baffled me when people were spending thousands of dollars for a phone that had it, while "Helicopter" was free to play on basically every Flash site ever.

Slight correction. Zuma was originally released for browsers then to mobile. Just wanted to say that. Other than that I actually didn’t know 3 of these. Awesome video.
