The crowd cheering at the end is not a dramatic effect - the entire Running on Empty album was recorded live, he was writing the songs on tour and then performing them. The versions are all from different shows during the tour. Jackson Browne is a brilliant songwriter with a gorgeous voice. He is close with all the Laurel Canyon musicians - Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, Joni Mitchell, the Eagles. The Eagles song "Take It Easy" was written by Jackson Browne, but he only had the first verse and the chorus. He was stuck there, so he gave it to his friend, Glen Frey, who added the second and third verses and made the song into a huge hit from the Eagles' eponymously titled first album.

This song, from his album of the same name, was released in 1977, and was his first work since he was devastated by his wife's suicide the previous year. He has stated that this song was partially inspired by his memory of her, and since her death he'd felt that he was 'running on empty' and without purpose.

Jackson Browne is an outstanding musician, singer, songwriter. Running on Empty is one of my favorite songs by Jackson. It was used in the movie Running on Empty, which is based on a true story of a couple who are fleeing authorities due to their anti war activities. It’s actually a pretty good movie. The other song by Jackson is the Load Out, written about the many people who set up and take down equipment etc for concerts. So glad you’re reacting to Jackson Browne. You will want to do more. Thank you. 👏👏🇨🇦

C'mon now...I hit my mid teens in the early 80's and "prefer" a lot of music from that time. HOWEVER, I love classic rock from the 70s, British Invasion v1.0 from the 60s, early rock from the 50s, Big Band from the 40's...Heck I love ragtime and Sousa marches. But... I also like grunge and some of the indy-alt stuff from the 90s. Some nu-metal from the 00s. Not to mention metal from the 70s-90s. Even a smidge of country (mostly 70s) and some rap/hip-hop. All that to say that there are wonderful styles of music, and acts, from pretty much any decade (except for maybe the 30s. I can't find much compelling, personally, from that decade.)

@@unclebobunclebob Every era and decade has its own “good” popular music: 50s rock, big band, ragtime, Sousa marches, etc. I really like all off it. But I think it’s the music era that people most identify with emotionally that becomes the “best” for them. For most people it’s the music they discovered when they were tweens and teens. Original music from that time.

When I first heard this song (circa 1978) I never once thought it had anything to do with being 'on the road' with a band. I always thought it was about a man looking back on his life, and seeing that he NEVER knew where he was going, and when he looked around at those who used to give him strength (direction) he finally came to realize that even they honestly did not know where they were going to end up.

Yes, Phil, the 70's are filled with tons of great music and bands. Some bands you are yet to discover. Having 45 years of music experience I consider the 70's for the most part the rock decade and the 80 the metal decade. This song "Running On Empty" is a popular metaphor for being exhausted, but the phrase had a much more literal meaning for Browne when it came to him. Browne wrote it while he was driving back and forth to the studio each day to make his album The Pretender. He told Rolling Stone: "I was always driving around with no gas in the car, I just never bothered to fill up the tank because - how far was it anyway? Just a few blocks."

He was very open and easy to talk to, and gave me advice on how to navigate the pitfalls of dealing with record companies. He played me some songs from a new album that he was working on at the time. One in particular was called Too Many Angels. He also gave me a glimpse into his writing process and played me some ideas from a cassette player he used to make sure he didn’t forget his ideas. I wonder if he still has that cassette player? I still have mine. Please do a reaction on Doctor My Eyes which is one of his two top 10 hits. Believe it or not he never had a number one which really surprises me because he’s the real deal. 🕊❤️🎼

This is his signature song but The Pretender, The Load Out/Stay, Somebody's Baby, Lawyers In Love and Doctor My Eyes are just a few of his other biggies.

There's a video of this song performed live, circa 1978, showing just how much fun everyone has while performing.

he used to have concerts to support a school in Sedona Az. every year, saw many great up and coming band at his shows, saw him get booed off the stage one year trying to announce the act that was coming up after Keb Mo... EVERYBODY wanted Keb Mo to do some more, he is not only a great songwriter and entertainer but the good his benefit concerts supported and the new bands that got recognition was amazing. Red Necked Friend and The Pretender are some of his lost masterpieces. thank you. oh ya, he did a lot with Warren Zevon, somebody else I would love to see you react to, his songs can be a lil... eye opening though... you forgot to mention that he was born in Germany because his father was stationed at an American military base there. again, thank you. have a great day!

Love you guys. Your smart, the 70s is the best. I was a teenager and it was wild and music was diverse. I met Jackson in the back alley of 5th and Broadway in Downtown LA in 1983. He lowered me down a signature from the 3rd floor window of the building his was practing at. Doctor my eyes is his best work ever.

Oh no, this was live. This whole album was recorded on the road; the stuff that's not live was laid down in hotel rooms and spaces they found while touring. Jackson was one of the Laurel Canyon singer-songwriter population in the 70's, along with Joni Mitchell, CSN, James Taylor, etc. When I was in high school at Immaculate Heart (which is near Laurel Canyon) one of the students, a girl named Kiki, died in a car accident. She was a stone Jackson Browne fan, so her friends went to his house and papered his fence and gate with notes begging him to come to her memorial at the school. Wait for it... HE CAME. He strode in with his guitar, and her best friend burst into tears, crying, "He came! He came!" It was heartbreaking and wonderful. This is one of the theme songs of my youth. I came of age in the 70's, and this music is like the blood in my veins, I know it so well. I finally got to see Jackson perform onstage in Santa Cruz in the 90's, and there were only two songs that whole night that didn't have some deep personal memory attached to them. He's a fantastic storyteller, one of our great voices. Do explore his work more!

It was a live song. It was from his live album recorded at Meriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, maryland. Browne wrote the song while driving to the studio each day to make The Pretender, according to Rolling Stone magazine: "I was always driving around with no gas in the car," Browne is quoted. "I just never bothered to fill up the tank because - how far was it anyway? Just a few blocks."[4]

The perfect compliment to this song (this recording IS live!) is "The Load Out/Stay" - also live from this album - and it's absolutely about being on tour and is essentially a thank you to the roadies and the fans. This is what you were referring to at the end of your commentary and it's amazing.

Outstanding songwriter and musician! So happy you’re finally hearing him. He co wrote with the Eagles on some of their titles (Take it Easy) and has a really profound song “Doctor my Eyes” that he wrote at 16. He has a wonderful song about being on road “The Load Out / Stay” ( live) you should check out.

This is one of the very few artists I have alluded to previously where live performances are concerned. Jackson Browne is a genius. A lot of what you hear on some of his best work was recorded on his tour bus. One of the most unique artists because live is how he worked. Here is a tidbit of trivia. He was roommates with Glen Frey before the Eagles and gave him one of the Eagles early hits, Take It Easy. His catalog is extensive. You won’t run out of masterpieces any time soon. Before you get caught up in the popular songs and well known hits, I hope you’ll take a little time to listen to 2 songs that aren’t hits, but showcase ability to connect with an audience and really touch the heart. Those songs are Love Needs A Heart and That Girl Could Sing. After that, Boulevard, Somebody’s Baby, Lawyers In Love, The Loadout/Stay and many others. Much Love ❤️

LoadOut/Stay, Doctor My Eyes, and the best song ever we written about the working class, The Pretender. The lyrics are the key to enjoying Jackson.
