Can you believe he is in his late 50's now? During his prime, his nickname was Mr Pure Energy, due to his non stop movement on stage while he's performing. He's doing all that while having diabetes type 1. He is highly respected in the music industry in the PH.

Before there was Morissette and Katrina Velarde and Gigi de Lana and Daryl Ong, and all the other great Filipino singers we enjoy today, there were people like Gary and Regine who set the standard for this new generation of singers. The tradition lives on!
It's an original composition (instrumental) by the recently-passed jazz maestro Chick Corea and later recorded with lyrics by the late great jazz impressionist Al Jarreau.

Gary Valenciano has been a fixture in the Philippine entertainment scene for decades, and you will often see him as a judge on singing competition shows. It was from one of these shows that he recruited Katrina Velarde as one of his backup singers, and he became her mentor. There is a video of them performing "Spain" live together, and she included the song in her latin medley. Jazz pianist Chick Corea wrote the music in the early 70's, and singer Al Jarreau (one of Gary's inspirations) wrote the vocal part in 1980. Many jazz musicians cover the song because of it's tricky timing.
It's cool that you're just now discovering the OGs of the Philippine music scene besides the younger generation as you did with Regine Velasquez-Alcasid (she has been rooting for Morissette ever since Mori was just starting out), and now you ran into Gary V who originally did "Could You Be Messiah" and arranged the music altogether to fit Morissette's style. Spain was written by Chick Corea and Al Jarreau, both legends of jazz.

The song was orginally written by jazz pianist Chic Corea who recorded it in the early '70s then Al Jarreau put lyrics to the melody and recorded his version 1980 which you could say Gary makes a cover of. If you haven't already done it you should react to Al Jarreau and Take Five.

The original is an instrumental from jazz guitar legend Chick Corea, who based this 70ies jazz standard on Joaquin Rodrigo’s guitar concerto “Concerto De Aranjuez”. Voice acrobat Al Jarreau wrote some lyrics for this.

There should be a law against anybody making Gary V perform sitting down. this is twice as good when he can let loose. Something I would love to see is Gary V and Katrina Velarde doing this together again. Those videos of them two doing this a few years back doing this song in concert are great, but Katrina has really grown vocally since then.
