@@HomeStudioBasics I am still newer to the hobby. I have seen a lot of classic headphones that have stood the test of time, is this the same with amps/dacs? Or does that technology develop differently over time? Would be great if there was an older cheaper amp for my setup
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 5 лет назад
@@dustinjones8432 It's interesting because the way Amps and DACs are being made is evolving. For instance Chord's Mojo doesn't utilize a traditional DAC chip and could explain why it sounds markedly better than anything in a lower price bracket. And yeah there IS a clear difference. It's just better in every way. People that frequent my channel and site know I don't push products or hype much unless there's a good reason to. The Mojo is an example of that. It's more intimate, lush, warmer, more organic, more realistic, etc. It felt like the vocalist was kind of singing in front of my face which really threw me off at first and made me almost wet myself. Never enough HD 600 vs "something" comparison videos. Even though the "vs HD 650" has been done by many others as well, it's always interesting to get another person's take. If you could do it... I think many people would be interested in comparisons vs: K712, K553, DT 880, HD 380, KSC75 btw, If you haven't listened to Nujabes yet, I think you'd love some of his songs... for example: Feather, Counting Stars, Lady Brown, Aruarian Dance, Tsurugi no Mai

Yeah to be honest this one is well overplayed but I had both at the apartment and figured why not? They are both still extremely relevant and a ton of people are still searching for the comparison in Google. Would love to do videos of some of those. Actually, all of them haha. I've heard some Nujabes but not all. Thanks for those recommendations! I'm about to fire up Tidal with the JDS Labs Element and maybe the K240. Haven't decided yet. I was demoing the Ananda again earlier and man is that an amazing headphone. Recorded the video so that will be next weeks upload I think. I had done a first impressions video but haven't been able to get it because it had some wiring issues which are fixed now.

@@HomeStudioBasics Damn! We almost forgot. :D Wow, you also have a k240? I've been curious about that one for a while... seems like it was also a "gold standard reference" for a long time, just like the HD 600, perfect chance to compare the two "legends"! There's also no video comparing them on youtube yet, perfect opportunity for you to make first and only!

@@TheSolidlad Yeah man, it's cool because she asks on the 29th AND 30th. Hehe. Silly Raiden forgets the day he met Rose. :P "OH NOW I REMEMBER! Today is the DAY WE MET!" Lmao. Anyways, yeah dude I've got the K240 600 Ohm on my dome right now listening out of a JDS Labs Element. Sublime. And yeah I think it would be a really interesting comparison because: 1) Both have rolled off bass. 2) Both have darker treble. 3) Both have different bumps in mid-range: 600 at 3k, K240 around 5k. I did a measurement of the K240 yesterday. Just a fantastic sound. There's an article on my site in depth comparing it to an 850. You may like that one. Let me know!

Had my 6XXs for a couple of years now so I’m a bit of a 650 fanboy. I’m watching this on the iPad wearing them right now as it happens, so I really enjoyed your comparison. I bent the upper section of the headband as Tyll suggested, they are incredibly comfortable now, can easily wear them for a 4 or 5 hour session with no adjustments.

Nice! They also made the termination a 3.5mm right? Thanks for the love man. It's an old comp but still relevant. I had both in the apartment. The 650 is a friend's. I really want to get my hands on a 58X. Do you have one or know of anyone that would be willing to lend it to me? Have I already asked you? @antoinep9733
@antoinep9733 5 лет назад
Home Studio Basics Yes a 3.5mm termination, which is handy, as although I have a couple of portable amps the 6XX sound okay straight from my iPad or phone (don’t really use the phone with them). No HD-58X here man, although “here” is 14,000km away from you, so I couldn’t help you out anyway 😂
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 5 лет назад
@@antoinep9733 Lol it seems like no one I've talked to recently is in the U.S. My phone DAC must be really crappy (volume wise) because it wouldn't get loud enough with an Ananda at 25 Ohm and 103dB Sensitivity. It sounded amazing just not nearly loud enough. Look for that video next week :) I just gave back the HD 650 to my friend Craig. Would love to hear an HD6XX as well. I read on Massdrop the sound signature wasn't changed?
@antoinep9733
@antoinep9733 5 лет назад
Home Studio Basics Same drivers, sound and build, although some say the plastic is a cheaper grade (seems solid to me). I’ve only a got an old iPhone 6. You have to almost max-out the volume, but it doesn’t distort, and the dac chip sounds pretty good. The bass gets a bit lower and tighter amped, but it’s not night and day.
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 5 лет назад
@@antoinep9733 Yeah I don't always recommend separate Amp/DACs to people because often times the phone's is just as good. For instance the iPhone DAC Chips are generally very good sounding from what I've heard and you may not even notice a difference between it and something like a DragonFly or E10K.

@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 года назад
Hey man! As a better all around investment, I would probably take the 6XX over the 9500. But: If you plan to do some Gaming the 9500 does have a better Soundstage. Overall the sound is more crisp and open, but with less bass and hotter upper mid-range. The 6XX is the best choice overall and my top recommendation for new people to the hobby. @@HomeStudioBasics The MOTU Ultralite MK5. It’s powered, for what it’s worth, and I’ve heard good things about MOTU interfaces. I’ve also seen reports of people using the M2 with no complaints. Also, on a slight tangent, I’ve been struggling picking between the 600 and 650. I wear glasses, so I figure both will be uncomfortable after a while, but not too terribly. I mostly want to be able to hear my own compositions at a good volume as I play my MIDI instruments and listen back. I’m also hoping to create piano heavy and jazz-fusion/rock-inspired tracks. Take Steely Dan’s Aja or Chick Corea / Return to Forever for example. Would you have any advice on this? The consensus seems pretty split on which is better. @@HomeStudioBasics Is the 6xx just a more affordable third party 650? hmm... again I was hoping to do mixing + listening, so I’m a little concefned about the fact that a lot of people are saying the 600s are better for that purpose because they’re supposedly more “neutral.” Yet they have a narrower frequency response apparently?
@sunnypatri

HD 600 Pros : - Very clear and detailed, it feels snappy. - Neutral sound which is why many like this. - Vocal is clear and forward. Cons: - Bass is not impactful as you find in a lots of review. - Soundstage feels definitely narrow and restricted, I could confirm this after hours of usage. - Not as enjoyable for a casual/normal user. That laid back and smoothness is missing. HD 650 Pros: - Much better based and sounds fuller. - Soundstage is definitely better. - Very smooth and laid back tune that could be used for hours without fatigue. - Vocals are darker and recessed, if you like that. Cons: - Not as clear or detailed as you may feel when compared with HD 650 - Not neutral sound signature as HD 650 As my HD 650 got damaged I ordered HD 600 after so many wonderful recommendations online but in short it is not as enjoyable and non-fatiguing . So will try now HD 660s or something which is more enjoyable and return HD 600. Considering enjoyability aspect in mind might be Sennheiser sound engineers tuning the subsequent versions of 600 series (650, 660s, 660s2 etc.) - Kudos to them for these wonderful Open-backs.

I had the 650 in 2011 and hate it, too slow and boring. I loved the hd600 because of the snappier sound. Now I am using the hd58x that it’s like an hd650 with more extended bass with the treble uneveness of the hd25. I like it for metal. Hey man! it's a tough call for sure. I think in either case an Amp/DAC would be a good idea, although with the 990 you could get away with not having one if it was the 32 Ohm. What do you think? I'd recommend something like an Objective 2 or ATOM with the 6XX plus some sort of DAC like the OL DAC, Modi, or even an E10K. 6XX would be better because as you said it's cheaper and a really great all around investment, but the 990 will be more open and a bit better for gaming. @HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 года назад
Hey man! Admittedly I don't listen to as much Metal as other genres, and my Metal catalogue is rather limited. For some of the Megadeth and Rage that I listen to, I found the intensity and thump lacking with the 600's, whereas I'd much prefer an HD25 for Metal (artists like Chon, Plini, Animals as Leaders, Polyphia I like as well, etc). It brings out the liveliness of the guitars and bass specifically. With the 600's I find them to be a bit too dull sounding. I think both the mids and treble are important on Metal, but in my mind treble slightly edges it. Just my opinion though!

@@HomeStudioBasics Oh I have no doubt that the HD25s have more slam that many will enjoy when listening to metal and wanting "oomph". I'm just saying that if you really wanna follow the guitar lines and have a "real" tone to the guitars the HD600/650 are much better at that as they just have a way more realistic timbre. But for "casual" or "fun" listening I totally get you!

@@nothingEvil101 Hey man! I get what you're saying, but the HD25 is incredibly detailed and reveals the tone and character of the instruments quite well and I really get a sense of how a crunchy guitar is supposed to sound. I also think the 600 does as well. What songs would you recommend to try? I have a 600 here.

Home Studio Basics I know the HD25 and compared to the 600 the tone and timbre of instruments isn‘t as realistic by a long shot. But maybe that’s just something you only realize if you play certain instruments yourself. As for specific tracks.. for me it’s quite apparent on everything that has any instruments in it, so I couldn’t say 😉 But if you wanna listen to some kickass metal then try Kreators Gods of Violence album, which I enjoy a lot recently and is actually well mixed which is a thing one can not say about every metal album. Sounds great on the 600

@@nothingEvil101 Hey man! I know the HD25's well too; I owned them for a long time. I just felt like they portrayed the instruments for the type of Metal I was listening to better than an HD600 did. Just my opinion. Metal is a genre that sometimes suffers from a lot of overly compressed, bad sounding mixes and so for me, the way the HD600 rendered stuff just made it sound flat and dull I guess. Too honest I suppose. When I want to listen to music like that, I'd rather it be fun and lively sounding, not transparent I guess is what I'm trying to say. To each his own though. I will check out the album!

Disliked for the huge jump in audio. I don’t understand audiophiles who can my control audio in their videos.

For awhile I didn't know what part you were referring to and now I know! Lol sorry about that. 3:56 right? I normally catch those but I didn't that time. Definitely been working on that in more recent uploads.
