House of the Dragon episode 3: Second of His Name was...the best. I loved it, the show delivered on just about everything my book loving heart wanted. Well...most of it. Prophecy, magic, weirwoods, dragons, battles, a drunk guy talking about dreams in front of a fire. The destiny of Rhaenyra and Aegon being decided over a white hart, Viserys finding he has a heart, and Daemon bathes in blood in the Stepstones. Had it all.

I just realized that if Otto hadn’t convinced Viserys to name Rhaenyra heir, then his heir would’ve automatically shifted from Daemon to Aegon when he was born. He kind of played himself

The scene of Viserys killing the stag highlights how strong Harwin is. If you notice, all the other men are on horseback, using their horses as leverage, while Harwin is holding down the stag with his bare strength.

How can Viserys be so blind? He himself was not raised to be king, but not grooming Rhaenyra for the massive responsibility of being queen is just ludicrous. No one spoke to her about her tour, as more than a means to find a husband, as she can be learning about different regions of Westeros and fostering loyalty amongst each family. If Otto does not urge the king on a matter, it generally holds no precedence. Sad.

I know I am a bit late, but you answered your own question: "He himself was not raised to be king." He does not know what is importened, how could he teach his daugther what is? He teaches her how to be a King/Queen the same way he was taught: He was not. He listenes to his advisors, because he does not know, so everything his advisors (Otto in this case) do not tell him about, does not get his attention.

In retrospect, the white hart appearing to her was a nothing burger as neither she nor Sir Criston told anyone about the sighting. Nor did it affect Sir Criston's decision to harden his heart against her and change his loyalty to Alicent.

After watching all your recent HOTD videos, I find this one to be unique and the most engaging in the fact that you do an incredible breakdown scene by scene of this episode. I would love to see more of these in depth videos on your other favorite episodes of the season. Have any surpassed this one as your favorite? My personal favs ended up being episodes 5 and 8. Both had heaps of complex, multilayered dialogue scenes that pour you with subtext and foreshadowing, while also delivering on satisfying climaxes built up over the season. I wonder what hidden meanings you derived from some of those scenes.

Thanks for watching all those, you're a brave man! I did enjoy making this one in theory, but it ran into a few problems. First, HBO copyright blocked it 3 times and claimed it twice. This is...the 3rd reupload after numerous cuts and trims. So that kinda soured me on trying to make more during the season when I really didn't have time, plus it didn't get watched very much. Didn't seem worth the hassle of how much effort it took versus how aggressively copyright was used against it. Most of the rest of my videos this season were this style, only if I focused on the one particular scene or topic I liked the most in it rather than the whole episode. It could be something I go back and do during the offseason, but with how hard HBO slapped this one I'm not anxious to try. In particular I did love episodes 8, 6, and 5 the most later in the season.

One that could be interesting to explore is Daemon’s motivations. Is he inherently selfish? Or is his love for his family stronger? Because time and time again he changes his mind, going from supporting Rhaenyra to choking her in anger. Helping his brother up to the throne, to insulting him in anger after his death. I find him a conflicted character and it would cool to see your thoughts on all his mixed actions he’s taken.

There's only one Strong who appears to have a dark ulterior motive and it's not Harwin or the father (other than Harwin being Rhaenyra's lover). Lord Strong does seem to have the kingdom's best interests in mind.

People always say “how can there be pugs?” How can there be Criston Cole, a name derived from Christ?

I love how people give Martín a hard time about pugs in a world where the dragon rider family was selectively inbred for generations, causing exponentially worse problems down the line. The story of the cousin of wolves that can now barely even breathe as an unforeseen consequence of man’s selfish system of control - a tragedy perfectly analogous to other themes in the world of ice and fire. Makes perfect narrative sense to me. The breed probably originated in eastern Essos, and pugs in our world came from China. They were bred to amuse the rich and brought to Europe in the 16th century and popularized by House Orange in the Netherlands and House Stuart on the British Isles. My only question is which wealthy house took to them in Westeros? I’d like to think that it was the Lannisters who grew up with wheezing little flat faced pups, having to be hauled around the Rock by their underlings.

I’m mean you’re late, but I just realize something. You’re right this is Lyonel Strongs first move to take the position of hand of the king. What terrifies me is the other move that we probably don’t realize either. In the episode where Daemon returns I believe it is actually the next episode. Rhaenyra runs straight into Harwin Strong his son and you can’t convince me that he did not tell his father about that. Or that his other son Larys a bloody spy. Master didn’t know about it, even from the second. The princess left the castle. Being on the council as long as he was Lyonel no doubt knew exactly what Otto would do next. And that is his own grave. Yes Otto told the truth, which he should have, but it was a no-win situation for him. Episode three opened the kings eyes to possible treachery and another underline threat. After telling what the princess was up to Otto was in a rock in a hard place. Tell the king and and it seems like you’re pushing to have the princess removed out of the line of succession, which would make your grandson the heir. And the second option is, don’t tell the King until possible consequences later on, but then you reveal that you knew this entire time and then your extra screwed. Everyone knows you waited until something bad happened before which would have to force the king hand to remove the princess. Lyonel isn’t the best position to win no matter what happens in this situation. His son is a watchman which means he’s on the streets and his other son is a spy master which means he can watch the princess wherever she goes. You can protect and keep her safe if the situation turns bad but unless it doesn’t, he just has to let Otto dig his own grave.

I’m a book reader. The books never really talked about her upbringing. This show makes it seem that she is completely uninterested. They have her acting like a spoiled teenager rather than a youth who expects to rule one day. I liked this character more when I knew less about her.

I think she is partly acting this way because Viserys isn't really treating her as the heir in anything but name and she too believes she will be supplanted, couple that with being traumatized by her mother's death and the fact that she died from trying to give the king an heir, she is horrified at the prospect of meeting the same fate. Then again there is definitely a dose of spoiled teenager to go with all of this.

Ykw, until this video, i never questioned that Viserys saw was a dragon dreamer. But actually, we have little reason to consider him that. He was just a selfish man swooning over former might if his ancestors, outbested in everything by Daemon and Rhaenys, and wishing to become a special boy, to see prophetic dreams. At the great cost of other people's lives.

Yes the faith had agreed to tolerate their incest in order to stop dying by dragon, but they by no means advocated for it. Otto suggesting the sibling match it is pretty out of place for a Hightower. Shows his self interest trumps all other considerations, a pattern has shown at every turn.

its hard being exited for prophecies and dreams, then in the end we end up whit Arya killing the night king and Bran being king. We get absolutely no information about who the night king was. And honestly I understand show watchers only. What does it matter that Ageon had a dream? A stark killed the night king Northen forces mainly fought the war, and another stark ended up on the throne of the Targaryens, the last Targaryen standing was exiled beyond the realm, and in the end a new queen is crowned in the north. Thus the significance of the Targaryens are at an end , their iron. throne gone the realms only six their bloodline gone, their dragons mostly dead, and they barely mattered

A question has always bothered me... I haven't seen any videos on the topic, maybe you could consider it. Why in ASoIaF/GoT, Danerys is never harmed by Fire or heat in general, but in the story, every Targaryn is. Many have been wounded by or even died from fire. Danerys claims "The Dragon is not harmed by fire", but many, many Targaryn's before her could be considered "The Dragon"... How is it she was immune to fire and heat, and other Targaryn's were not?
