新年好 - Gong hei fat choy
Hello everyone and welcome back to Everybody Loves English with ME, your English teacher, Mr. Nick.
If you've been following our page, you already know that one thing I love teaching you about is holidays, and we have lots of holidays coming up soon!
But today, we're celebrating the Lunar New Year!
For many of my Asian students and Asian people all over the world, Lunar New Year is the biggest and most important holiday. It represents the beginning of the new year, but it also marks the beginning of spring. There's no fixed date for this holiday but it takes place every year between January 20th and February 21st and the celebration can last for many days!
To prepare for this big celebration, people clean up and fill their homes with red and gold decorations. They spend time with their families and eat a lot of food which include special meals that represent good luck.
Children also receive “lucky money” in red envelopes from their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and close family friends. If you look up at the sky, you'll also see beautiful and colorful fireworks!
For people who are superstitious, there's a few things they should avoid so that they don't get any bad luck during Lunar New Year! Cutting your hair during this holiday might cause bad luck. It can lead to cutting connections with friends and family.
You should also avoid wearing black or white because these colors symbolize death.
Every year, many North American cities hold Lunar New Year celebrations with big parades that include traditional dragon dances, lion dances and beautiful paper lanterns.
I think the coolest thing about the Lunar Calendar is that there is a cycle of 12 animals that represent each following year. After every 12 years, the cycle of animals starts again.
Now here's your homework:
I'm going to show you the 12 animals and the years they have recently represented. After showing you all this information, I would like you to answer the following 3 questions.
#1 - What was the animal representing the year that YOU were born?
#2 - After reading the characteristics of these animals, do you find that they represent you and your family members accurately?
#3 - What is the animal representing the year right at this moment as you are watching this video? For example, you can write, "It's 2021 and it's the Year of the Ox"
