Hello everyone and welcome back to a special edition of Everybody Loves English called, Nick 6… with me, your English teacher Mr. Nick! Today’s video is about one of the most popular holidays in North America and all over the world! That’s right, today we talk about Christmas!
Every year, people around the world celebrate Christmas on December 25th. But Christmas is more than just one day. This holiday lasts for almost a month. Christmas is a very important day for for Christians everywhere. Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. But the beauty of Christmas is that people from all cultures and religions can celebrate it too. I mean, who doesn’t enjoy receiving presents or exchanging gifts with their loved ones?
Many streets, houses, and businesses in your neighbourhoods filled with colourful lights and decorations. It helps make the long, dark winter feel more cozy and warm.
December is also a very crowded month for shopping centers. Christmas is one of the busiest shopping seasons around the world. But not all gifts come from the stores! Some, come from the North Pole!
Santa Claus
Santa Claus is one of the most recognized non-religious symbols of Christmas. He has a long, white beard, a big stomach, and a red suit. Most kids call him Santa, but he has a few other nicknames as well such as "Kris Kringle", "Father Christmas" and "Jolly Ol' Saint Nick" to name just a few. Most children in North America believe that Santa Claus lives in the North Pole where he makes toys. Of course this is a tall order for just one person so he as lots of help from his trusty assistants! They're called Santa's Elves!
On December 24th, also known as Christmas Eve, all the toys and presents are ready to be delivered to all the good boys and girls around the world. Santa travels through the sky on a sleigh pulled by his 9 magical reindeer. He lands on the roof of people’s homes, enters through the chimney, and leaves gifts for the children. If you don't have a chimney, no problem. Santa has man other ways of getting his presents under the tree too!
One of the most important things about Christmas is spending time with loved ones. Families often get together and decorate the family Christmas tree, they hang stockings by the fire, and exchange cards and gifts. Of course, food is also a very important part of the Christmas celebration. So Now that you know a little bit more about Christmas, here are some idioms and vocabulary inspired by this beautiful holiday!
