You said you don't do 0-60 times often, so here's a pointer. Shifting at the vehicles peak power output is ideal. The 2014 Civic Si makes peak power at 7000 rpm. If you're shifting at 6k, you're shorting yourself power and you'll have a slower time. So, on this car... Launch, redline, shift, redline, shift, and you'll go far.

You won't get the advertised 0-60 unless you completely flog the car. 6k rpms and that motor is still coming alive. They don't make torque so shifting early just cuts your legs off as far as seeing the cars potential.

Everyman Driver Car Reviews Got to launch this car at 4000 rpms and dont shift so soon. You didnt even let the shift light come on. Granted this car stock is not fast but it is certainly faster than 8.5. Like th op said, these cars dont have torque so shifting early does in fact "cut your legs off". I own a 2014 Si. Its not the fastest car I've owned, but it is a fun and reliable car for everyday driving. Dave didn't do very well at all in this test. The SI is a mid 6 sec 0-60 car for anyone who has experience driving sporty cars. The car needs to be launched at 2k RPM with traction control turned off and shifted right at 7.2k RPM for best results. The SI isn't a drag car and 0-60 isn't what this car is about. The SI shines on curvy back roads and will put a smile on your face when driven for it's intended purpose. To each his own, but for me I am enjoying the SI.

You're shifting out of first way too early, man. I don't know about the 2014, but my 99 EM1 will get to about 38 ish in first. Also, you're gonna have to give it a little gas in between shifts so you don't lose momentum. When you drop the gas completley you lose a bunch of momentum and the engine has to make a larger jump to match the RPM. I got my 99 Si to 60 in 7 flat.
@keepreal4life
@keepreal4life 9 лет назад
Your em1 is a 5sp meaning your gears are longer. 2014 si comes with a 6sp in which you have to shift earlier. The more gears you have the earlier you have to shift

Gotta go with Traction Control off, hold the rpm 2500 to 3500rpm (Going to take a few runs to find the sweet spot for launch) dump the clutch and floor it once once it hooks, don't let up on the gas when shifting, and ofcourse go to redline! And also good to do a burn out of two off cam to head up the summer threads. Not bad for first time trying, atleast you didn't miss a gear.

I love how people are trying to blame his driving, sure his shifts weren't perfect and he was granny shifting in the beginning, but later in the video, he went all the way to red line, launched it at a good RPM, and it's still slow as shit. It's fwd, hardly above 200 hp and weights over 3,000lbs. There's no way it's 0-60 is 6.5 seconds. Perfect shifts, perfect conditions, I'd say maybe 7.5 but 6.5 is outrageous. A brz has the same hp and less weight, rwd (big factor to helping with 0-60 times) and can't even do 6.5 seconds 0-60.

You have to rev each gear to redline in order to take advantage of your gearing. 1st gear pulling 6500-7000 RPM will be assuredly faster than 2nd gear at say 4500-5000 RPM. Otherwise your shifts sound slick and the launch looks decent.

To answer your question -yes, you are getting better. Most people would like to think of themselves as manual masters, but even the "masters" mess up allot. Honestly, you tires were cold(ish), and as you said the road was cold as well. Add that into 2,000 foot elevation your 8.28 second run was probably spot on for the conditions.

I think there are two ways to measure 0-60... shifting normally like you do, and then shifting like you're at the track. The problem is that shifting like you're at the track harnessing your inner drag-strip racer you will be flat-footing the gas pedal without lifting between gears, and you will be shifting right at redline. You also should be launching this car, TCS OFF, at around 4000-5000rpm and side stepping the clutch. Doing these things will result in a dramatic reduction in your 0-60s, but doing this often on a vehicle you own will in fact break things (transmission, axles, clutches, etc) I appreciate your reviews Dave, but you may want to get a very consistent method of doing 0-60s and then advise the viewers on how you plan to do the 0-60. For example tell viewers "I intend to do my 0-60s as a normal sane person might launch the car on the street, soft and neatly, and as a result the times are going to be slower than the car magazines" rather than looking disappointed when you don't achieve a 0-60 in 6.5. Cheers Dave.

Dave you gotta dump the clutch (with any manual car)...rev to like 4 grand and dump and shift to redline. The car has a shift indicator. High altitude doesn't help NA cars either but this car should have broke the 8 sec mark. (Turbo would have made these runs more consistent) Next time maybe try 2-3 methods and see which gets the best time and use that for the times runs.

You win the You Tube award for the classiest responses to ignorant, arrogant and childish comments. Something to think about, the 1930 Duesenberg Model J was rated 0 to 60 in 8 seconds. Can you imagine a car that big and heavy accelerating that quickly?

I also have a 2014 SI, i was split over a WRX and this. WRX is a little faster, but cant beat the reliability and gas milage in a civic. I am averaging 31.8 mpg and have put a little over 5000 miles on it so far. Car is a lot of fun to drive!!!!

does he know that he needs to go to maximum rpm red line (7200 rpm) to get the most out of it? it's not hard to see why he's getting such bad times on 0 to 60.

how are you gonna launch without doing a proper launch control loll shift at 6500 and when you launch keep the rpms at 3000 before you launch with tracking control off it'll help with wheel spin
@chefjefe68
@chefjefe68 9 лет назад
Greets, Dave. As others have said, with Honda VTEC engines, you do need to rev the motor to at least 3500, drop the clutch, and wind it out to the redline in each gear. In my 05 TSX 6 speed with close to the same engine, I hit 60 in 2nd gear.

@@sycboyspi no TSX is the fastest. Mine had the Hondata reflash, so quicker than stock. Still was a fun car, but nothing like my current BMW

You need faster shifting @ a higher rpm. You're killing its torque for it to find grip and no wheel spin. Giving it some revs helps as well even though it doesn't have launch control. As you did in the video.

Yep, shifted too soon. Could keep the revs up a bit more at launch as well.

Interesting to note that that the Accord Couple v6 is much, much faster. Too bad they don't provide the mechanical LSD for the V6. The key thing to understand about the Civic Si is that, like the Scion FR-S, it is about handling more than power.

Should be getting in the early sixes, but your the everyday driver obviously not Hondas racing driver who set that time. Also great enthusiasm.

Try redlining it. VTEC has all the power in the higher RPMs
@jesusalvidrez3698

you should check how Vtec works ... you need to rev at least at 7200rpm for power ....
@killabandit

You need to Rev that car to refine or you won't get the time. Honda makes all its power up top. Stop short shifting it.

Well it certainly sounds like you know what you're doing! Nice video by the way. Although, it looks like the road is wet, so it would be very difficult to get a good 0-60 mph run.

Need to Rev higher in the red line so that the v tech kicks in. I owned the previous version and was never use to it.

Also, how can you not tell the engine wants to be revved more, can you really not hear that the engine is just starting to make power when you're shifting.
