Continuity wise, this is the end of the Bond run started by Connery. The Craig films are a reboot of the franchise. I love the callbacks to previous Bond films, especially Q's old gadgets. There are parts of this movie I really liked, the sword fight, the car chase on the ice and in the ice building. I have some feelings of slight sadness that this was the end of my Bond movie theater- going days. I've watched the Craig films on TV but not in the theater as I had become bored with the genre and wanted to spend my time elsewhere. This movie had some good moments, but it's a mixed bag with missed opportunities and some bad CGI. As per your question, do the Craig movies, then the unofficial Bond movies, simply for a 💯% completion rate.
@@flaggerify no, Connery through brosnan are meant to be the same man played by different actors. Eon has said they take each bond film one at a time so naturally the age of bond is not consistent, but then again you wouldn’t want bond to be in his sixties or seventies at the end of the series.
Even if you've seen the Daniel Craig films, it would be interesting to see if watching the rest of the series changed your perspective on them, especially if you haven't seen No Time To Die yet. One way or another this movie came at the end of an era. Sometimes it feels more like a theme park ride than an actual movie. Glad you enjoyed it, I can't wait to see what's coming next
I agree with this. It would be interesting to see how you see the Craig films in the light of the previous ones. I find it interesting, for example, that Martin Campbell was chosen to reinvent the series twice (thus obsoleting himself), first with Goldeneye and later with Casino Royale.
Agreed. I’ve been watching your Bond reviews just waiting for you to experience the “quantum” shift to the Daniel Craig movies (I didn’t realize you had seen them already). They realized they had lost ground to the Bourne movies and revamped the style.
Keep going! We’re here for your commentary, your thoughts on the filmography, the directing, the production, the script, and what you think about the comparison between the Craig era films and the prior ones that came before them.
I have about 12 reaction channels i follow and anytime they upload a second time viewing I tend to not watch them as much knowing the reaction isn't jarring or surprising because I tend to lean into movies that have heavy like OH SHIT look at that....its your channel but just thought I'd toss my thoughts into the mix since you addressed it in the beginning of the video. I always enjoy your first time reactions sir thank you for the entertainment while I work and cook.
DAD(2002) was obviously the end of an era. Many people don't like this movie. I think this is a very entertaining movie. Of course, not one of the best, but at least not boring! Great fun! *** Now comes the extremely depressing Craig era... All his films are depressing! Spectre and NTTD are particularly terrible! And Craig himself is not like an English gentleman, but like an FSB assassin! You can skip his era! *** Please do NSNA(1983)!!! Sean Connery was so great in NSNA, even at the age of 53!!!
Graig's Casino Royale is great and pretty close to the book. But yes, Spectre and NTTD is bad and looks like a surreal fever dream after grounded Casino Royale. Craig era looks broken and unbalanced. DAD was campy but entertaining. It almost looks like some 21st century Moore flick.
RIP Kenneth Tsang (General Moon) who coincidentally passed away today at 86. And yes please do continue by doing the 5 Daniel Craig films in the rebooted timeline. You watching them again with the context of the whole series behind it would be super interesting.
My favorite part of reactions is seeing somebody watch it for the first time. I don't know if my opinion is in the majority or the minority, but I basically only watch firsts. Just my two cents.
Shan, I enjoy your reactions and reviews so much that it really doesn't matter to me if you have seen the Daniel Craig films before. Please react to them!
Personally, I believe the Craig era never found itself. It started out in a more realistic way, never mind that doing that in parallel to the Bourne franchise was kinda superfluous, and never mind realistic Bonds had been around (eg. FYEO). Later on, they decided it would make a nice contrast to pit a realistic Bond against a camp opponent, and that never made any sense to me. They tried to cramp two movies into one and ended up without rhyme or reason.
Pause at 0:34, and I already know your question, a big YES, go for it as I love your 1st time reactions and even if you've seen them love to hear a commentary on the others 1st time or not. Then the special 1st time for No Time To Die will be more special. Unless you cheated and saw it. So what, 2nd time watch will still be enjoyable as I love your reviews too. Go for it and have fun!!!!
It would not feel complete if you did not react to Craig's Bond films. I've appreciated all the Bond reactions so far, and it feels silly if you quit now.
It doesn't matter what the movie is, I'm here for YOUR commentary and verbalage, Shan. I hope you do continue through to the Craig era (maybe even do Layer Cake are a precursor/prequel to his Bond run? It IS the one that made the Broccolli's sit up and take note after all). It's fair enough that time has gone by for you to revisit his run and you adding your two-cents throughout. Even if you took your sweet time, it would still be some time before you get to his most recent and final outing, so yeah, please do continue.
I would be interested in you reviewing the better Bond copycat films such as James Coburn's ""Our Man Flint" and "In Like Flint" as well as Dean Martin's "Matt Helm" series...especially "The Wrecking Crew" which would add great context to my favorite film of all time Tarantino's "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" if you ever did it. As for unofficial films...the "underground" edit of "Never Say Never Again" would be great as some of the others such as "Operation Kid Brother" featuring Connery's brother Neil..."Modesty Blaise" and more...even "Return Of The Man From U.N.C.L.E" featuring George Lazenby's cameo as "JB". For my 2 cents you could pass on the Columbia spoof "Casino Royale" as it is notable to me only for the groovy Herb Alpert theme song. Love to see you do the Craig films though.
Hi Shan, fellow Bond RU-vid channel here, also posting Movie Reactions. My two cents: Continue your Bond series with the Craig ones as well. Even if you've already seen them, it could still be interesting to see you talk about those movies! Keep up the good work!
I'd say continue with the Craig films (especially if you remember enjoying them). I'd also suggest alternating them with the unofficial/parody films so that people who are here for the "first time" get those fairly regularly.
Brosnan made some amazing movies, post-Bond. Check out: 2005's Action Comedy _The Matador_ - playing a broken down hitman, Broz gives his career best performance. Is _DAD_ a good Bond film? No. Was it the fantastical, high escapism audiences needed after the slog of _TWINE_ and 9/11? Yep. _DAD_ is competent escapist fare, it served it's purpose, and it gave us the Craig run. And, even with poor material, Broz is _always_ on point.
I generally only enjoy true first time views, and I often skip any movie reactions once I understand that someone has seen it before ... it just loses something. I appreciate your honesty. If you don't do the "second time watching", it would be nice if you just made one video that is discussion only - i.e. the "Review" without the "Reaction", regarding the Danial Craig films, and comparing them back to the rest of the series. It might mean that you re-watch the films yourself, but what would interest me would be an entire video that is just your review and thoughts that you typically do at the end. I would combine all of the "Reviews" into one RU-vid video. I think this would make a great ending to your series. And since you wouldn't actually be watching ("Reacting" to) the Danial Craig Bond movies in the video, you wouldn't even need to worry about copy-right strikes.
yes, great idea, "second watching" is not the aim here, but pointing out the perception of the differences between "old" and "new" franchises might be interesting
I enjoy lots of reaction channels but I usually bow out after the reaction is over. However, I actually appreciate and enjoy your commentary afterwards! Excited to explore more of your channel!
I say watch the Craig ones.. they are reboots.. you get to watch them now after seeing the originals. I think it will be worth it. Your thoughts and new insights to these will be fun
There are several reactors on YT watching all the JB films and am wondering if any of them intend to watch the unofficial bonkers 1967 all star movie Casino Royale with David Niven as Bond and Woody Allen as his son Jimmy. Plus the other unofficial James Bond film starring Sean Connery called "Never Say Never Again" (in-joke as Connery said after his last time that he'd never touch the role again). It's a remake of "Thunderball" and features an aging Bond whose sent to a sanitarium to shape up and discovers that the bad guys are plotting evil plans against the world etc etc etc.
Yes, continue with Craig. Even if you know the plots you are older now and looking at the films with a different eye than back when you first saw them, especially when it comes to the filmmaking aspect.
That car, The 'Vanish'. It is not so far fetched. Believe me when I say that a few years ago UK scientists had almost cracked it. But they realised it would never be practical and would leave the vehicle without any protection. So we sold the idea and the tech to the USA while we could focus on some new armour that could "stop" impact from any source 15 inches from the tanks surface. A legit forcefield. Code named Caeneus. We did the same with the Scram Jet. We invented it, found it too expensive and non practical, sold the tech to the US who spent even more on getting it to work, because they couldn't convert metric properly. But ultimately gave up. lol.
I am a bit disappointed that Shan did not recognize or comment on John Cleese being the new "Q" when commented on other, in my eyes less popular, actors. Besides that I love his enthusiam on every bond movie so far. And Yes, Shan, please review the Daniel Craig bond movies too on your channel.
Shan, if you haven’t seen it, can you please watch and react to Dante’s Peak? It has Pierce Brosnan as one of the lead roles and is a very good natural disaster movie.
Finally! Looking forward to this reaction already. Now, I may be on the minority on this but I don't hate this movie like other Bond fans do. It is average at best. I think the pros for me are Pierce Brosnan's performance as Bond and the cast did their thing too, and Halle Berry I guess she was ok as Jinx. Other pros for me though is David Arnold's score, the first half of the movie being decent, the action being decent, and the awesome car chase with the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish (Great car btw) and the green Jaguar. The cons are most definitely the overused special effects, the second half of the movie (minus the car chase), the writing and Madonna's title song (Oh god, I think it's better off on it's own than being a Bond song imo). But aside from that, this movie is okay. I'm not even ashamed that I have it on DVD either, I'm not. It's at least more watchable than Diamonds are Forever and Moonraker to me. But imo this isn't the last Bond film where Pierce Brosnan goes out with a bang. The real last Bond film we got was the video game "Everything or Nothing" that came out in 2004, and to me it closed out the Brosnan era on a good note. Honestly, both that and Nightfire are the games from the era I'd be better off playing than watching the movie a little bit.
I myself would still like to see you react to the Craig movies. Now that you have watched all the others you might see them in a different light and for me Casino Royale is one of the best of the entire franchise.
As much as I love Casino Royale and the fresh approach they took with that entry, I've always felt a little sorry for Pierce Brosnan. Although there were different circumstances in each instance, the other 007 actors seemed to move on from the franchise of their own volition, but Brosnan is the only one that EON chose to not renew a contact with despite a willingness to continue on in the role beyond this film, and he never really did anything wrong to deserve such treatment. I think he portrayed a great version of James Bond, but was mainly just let down by some flawed screenwriting and narratives throughout his tenure. For me, his best entry was still his first with Goldeneye, and it's a shame he didn't manage to end his time as Bond on a similar high note. As for the question of Shan watching the Craig films. If he has seen them before I'll probably just skip them as I find rewatches lose something and just become amateur film reviews, but I'll be back for all his other first time viewings and of course am keen to see what he makes of Sean Connery's return in 1983's Never say Never Again when he gets to it, (which funny enough was the first Bond film I ever saw.)
I agree and PIERCE is in my top 3 of BONDS, CRAIG is too nasty and to me the WISe cracks are half hearted tho he's in great physical shape. THIS one wth halle berry is still fun to watch even wth the crazy idea of a KOREAN gettin a face change to BRITISH?
Yes, do the Craig films. 15 years ago, you were a casual movie fan - today, you're a Bond connoisseur. Big difference. You can now appreciate the Craig run with new eyes & in context of the franchise.
used to HATE the theme of this one but it has grown on me. i say do the unofficials then the craig ones then maybe a final short vid with ranking of the movies and of the bonds.
LEE TAMAHORI: Director from New Zealand. who made the fantastic and incredibly powerful Maori-drama "ONCE WERE WARRIORS". Wow, the best drama I have ever seen! "The Edge", starring Anthony Hopkins, Alec Baldwin and a very angry bear, is also very good.
Tamahori also made an interesting (yet flawed) Chinatown/LA Confidential type neo-noir called Mulholland Falls in the 90s that might also be worth checking out for those who like that genre of film, but yes, Once Were Warriors is easily his best film.
Thanks for the quality content! I'd definitely like to see your reaction to Never Say Never Again soon. It's interesting to contrast it with Octopussy and Thunderball, and the backstory of its creation is pretty crazy. I've only seen parts of the 1967 Casino Royale, but it doesn't seem to have a great reputation. I'd also like to see your reaction/review of the Craig films, just to complete the theme.
I am not interested in the Craig movies. On the other hand, I am very excited to hear your thoughts on Never Say Never Again, which is both my favorite Bond movie, and also the worst one ever made. This movie was the film debut of Rosamund Pike. It's great to see her career has gone onto much better things!
I really like Toby Stephens as the dad in Netflix's Lost in Space and in Black Sails. You might like Casino Royale with David Niven. Some of the characters and some of the plot helped inspired Daniel Craig's version.
I'd definitely be interested in your takes on the Craig films whether you've seen them before or not and since you haven't seen Casino Royale in 15 years anyway, why not? Plus that part in f the series deserves your intricate examination anyway. So just call the videos for example: QUANTUM OF SOLACE - A RE-EXAMINATION. In regards to Jinx, her main purpose is to be Halle Berry. The screenplay is one of the most poorly organized in Bond film history, motivations all awry, but at least Halle grounded it briefly and briefly referencing the first Bond girl appearance with Honey Rider, not to mention Halle had just won an Oscar so it was all about how they were going to sell tickets and not "let's tell a good story!" And the CGI was incompetent.
RIP Kenneth Tsang (he played the North Korean General). Legendary HK cinema actor, people may know him well being in many John Woo movies. He’s was 86 (pronounced dead yesterday)
I rather enjoy this movie, campy as it is. Per the Craig films, I would say certainly give them a second viewing. Within the context of the broader Bond tale, the storytelling will be well more effective in many regards, and there are *many* details that you will cherish all the more as Bond staples.
Please finish the series, you can name it a REWATCH, it has a better ring to Second Watch. But you have to finish the series, I need to know what you think of No Time To Die!!
I vote that you keep going with the rest of the Bond films. I enjoy your commentary and it has been a while since I have seen the Daniel Craig movies. I loved the return of the Aston Martin - the front grille of my 2013 Ford Fusion hybrid is based off the 2002 Aston Martin Vanquish used in the movie.
22:15 Frost: *Ha! I can read your every move!* Famous last words? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Jinx: *(Kicks the knife with the Art Of War book embedded to it further into Frost's heart) READ THIS!!! BITCH!*
PLEASE do react to the Craig films. I would be more excited to watch your first watches of them, but I'd still be incredibly excited to see your rewatches, ultimately I'm here for your commentary. I do think there's a lot to remark on in terms of references to and differences from the past Bond films, I really do think watching them after your marathon of all the Bond films prior will greatly affect your experience.
I definitely would like you do continue with Bond films as I would like to hear your reviews and how they compare to the other films now that you have seen them.
I say you should watch Never Say Never Again and then do the Craigs. You do not need to watch the 1967 Casino Royale. It's a mess and in no way a Bond movie.
You need to ask yourself if Pierce was first James Bond you watched and Connery was last one, would you still consider Connery as your favorite Bond? People usually stuck to favor one which they first watched as it become persona who Bond is or should be for later ones. For me Pierce was first Bond I got introduced to. But when i watched rest, Connery become close 2nd along Craig being 3rd. Pierce still ended my favorite.
Brian De Palmas "Casualties of War" please! With Sean Penn, Michael J Fox. Ennio Morricone composer. True story in Vietnam War. It's Quentin Tarantinos favorite war film of all time.
I think you would have extra context watching them now given the amount of bond knowledge you have gained since watching the Craig movies for the first time. peace.
Shan, you could do them all and I'd watch every one of them. Might be classy to end it on Casino Royale. It's maybe the best one ever, tied with On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
I agree with some other commenters, watching the Craig films following these allows for a chance of comparison viewing, much like you've done so far. You're doing great in your reactions. Please continue, sir.
No!! You should continue the Craig Bond movies. Even though you have seen them already, watching it again you may spot something that you didn't see the first time.
1.) definitely do the rest. You deserve to end on a better note than Die Another Day lol 2.) I’m fascinated that you like this better than the last movie. Many people consider Die Another Day one of the worst, if not the worst bond movie. The subjectivity of film is what makes the art form so great.
What are you talking about? There are only 20 Bond movies. You can stop here. There are no more to review after this. People will tell you that there are more, but there aren't.
By all means watch the Craig ones. Maybe put more focus on the technical analysis to compensate for not being first time? (I may not watch them all since I have not seen all Craig films.)
i would like you to see the two rogue Bond movies, more interesting if you watched the 67 Casino before the re-interpretation on Craig's debut just to see the contrast between the two versions..
Given you've done this much of the series, i'd probably say just do the rest. You still have the interesting angle of having done the whole series in order - doing so would also allow you an option to do a final video with your personal highs / lows / observations of the bonds and bond movies as a whole. If you don't think its worth it because it cant be called a first time watch, then fair enough - but i think on this channel in particular though people are more interested in your thoughts on the movies in a more critical sense, discussing the merits of each movie and whatnot. Reactions can be fun on a base level, seeing someone experience the things you love is a weirdly cathartic and vicarious kind of enjoyment in itself but i'd remember you in particular tend to go above that level.
I don't think you should continue with the ones you have already seen. At least not yet. If you want to create a new category of watching, which are rewatches, you could then do the Craigs as part of that. For now, move onto the extra films.
By all means do the Craig movies too. It´s interesting to rewatch them when you have the full context of the series and how it´s changed over the years. Now you are a Bond veteran!
