033 - FROM THE CITY OF OXFORD TO OXFORD CANAL ON OUR NARROWBOAT

We leave Oxford behind and travel a little further up the River Thames to join the Oxford Canal vid Duke's Cut. We get stuck for the night and there is much drama as we meet a boat that is stuck on the silt in a lock and has some rope and a fender wrapped round its prop.
So far we are loving this canal but have mixed feelings about winter which is fast approaching. We are enjoying the peace and quiet but all the winter stoppages mean that we don't have as much freedom as we thought we would and getting used to keeping our home warm as it gets colder is yet another learning curve.
Lots of tangents as usual including learning about operation mincemeat and don't forget to watch to the end to see all the outtakes and bloopers there are a lot in this vlog, including a random rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody by Michael.
Thanks for watching!

I don't know what you too have been on, but that was the most endearing laugh out loud video I've seen for some time, is it the freedom of the Oxford Canal in 250 meter bursts, Loki looking down on you after you maritime Samaritan rescue, no it was the mince pies, the thought of black pudding being the next tester dish...what are raisins in English? that's a port or starboard question. rambling must stop, you delightful couple. I do so hope we will meet some day, upon the not so briny deep. Guy

Just re watched this video as a kind of wishful thinking. The Thames ring was to be our first cruising ring of the season . We are currently locked down at skipton on the l&l a wonderful place but not our plan at all . Stay safe guys hopefully this will all be a memory fairly shortly.

I know I'm 2+ years late but I really enjoyed this video particularly because you passed some of the terraced housing (near a big old red-brick Coal Powered Station) that I used to live in around 2001-2003. I recognised some of the houses that were opposite to where I lived. I haven't been back to the UK since then & was ridiculously excited to see them! 🥰👏👏 P.S. It really is a beautiful stretch of the Thames.

Nice vlog Micheal & Jo, Mince Pies oooh yes I do love em this time of year on a plate with double cream. Looked at the stoppages looks like you'll have a nice stay at Banbury to Nov 24th. Presuming you make Kings Sutton by the 13th easy I dare say. Keep em coming something new now on the narrow cut.

Black pudding is actually nice , depends on your tastes it can be a little of an accuired taste. If you don't mind egg in the beard you should try an egg banjo . That's a definite egg in the beard kind of sandwich, but with a fried tomatoes mmmm slap your mama good. I was always told that if your dog is eating grass it has an upset tummy.

It seems there may have been two men who never were. One is the well known victim of poison, and another body, from a secret sinking of a British ship. The ship was sunk by a German secret weapon, so its loss was very hush hush. This second man has been inferred by the route of the mission submarine, and the mission's time frame. cheers.

The narrow lock looked REALLY narrow. Glad you did not get stuck. A very brief look at a Hobie Mirage board going by. Only the second time I have seen one in a video. www.hobie.com/pedalboards/mirage-eclipse/ Mince pies are also cockney rhyming slang for "eyes". Only in the UK would mincemeat be pieces of fruit, and mincedmeat be ground beef. Dave.
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 6 лет назад
+LV_Woodturner funny, I've head the term "Hobie board", never knew what one was till now. Yeah the Oxford locks are all like that, very snug, but also very little moving about. I think I prefer them. And yes the linguistic oddities never cease! M

I hope I am not repeating any one elses comment, but the bumpers that you call them are called Fenders, as for the operation mince pi,e there is a very good film I believe called The man that never was, the man they usedwas a welsh tramp still enjoying your vlogs, are you wearing the bobble hat 24 hours a day lol.
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 6 лет назад
+Brian Rees Yes, his name was Glyndwr Michael, and he's buried under the name of the fictitious Acting Major Martin... quite the off case. One of the books I've got shows fenders as the fixed front and back ones, and bumpers for the removable side ones, but I hear both used all the time, though it seems the rope ones are called fenders more and the rubber inflatable ones bumpers. I shall endeavor as always to try and fail to remember the correct jargon!! M

Interesting once again. I never got time to go further up the Thames past Osney Bridge but did see the other end of the Sheepwash. I think you made a good choice. I was thinking you might have had issues if your boat is over 50 ft in Isis lock. My book 1 is clean as a whistle as well. Maybe it wasn't popular. I do keep track of where you are as I watch these excellent vlogs. Where in Canada did you have mince meat tarts? My experience is they vary depending on where you are and of course were never as good as my mom's.
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 4 года назад
They were the tarts my grandma and various aunts made in British Columbia (I think my mom may have done some as well, but I mainly remember them showing up around (Canadian) Thanksgiving and Christmas whenever my grandma and my great aunt were competing to stuff people to death. And yeah, never quite the same as home cooked, anywhere you go. M

OK guys, mince pies are far to sweet for my pallet and its great to see George has really adapted to canal life. I hope so as you have a unique way to vlog your travels. ATB Bri

You mentioned having to come back to complete the Sheepwash Channel / Isis Lock section, but you also skipped the upper Thames to Lechlade. Is your goal to complete just the entire canal network, or the entire navigable waterways (connected) of England and Wales? IOW, do you still have to go to Lechlade as part of your goal of completion?
@MinimalList

Our goal - which we eventually finished last year -/ was the entire connected and (at the time we got there actually in fact) navigable set of waterways… which is why we eventually made it as far as the limit of navigation at Lechlade. M
