They are splined to your front wheel bearings so they will turn when your wheel bearings are turning. The front axle and driveshaft are engaged when you put the truck in 4wd.

+Douglas Laramie Hard to believe the 1500 and 2500 would have the same axle. Everything on the 2500 is much bigger than the 1500.

Dad has owned this truck since around 60k miles. He is closing in on 400k miles. It's a work truck so it's getting a little run down now and rust is wrecking the body. In my opinion a 2500 truck is a much better truck than a 1500. They ride stiffer but they are built much heavier. Parts last longer. Parts can cost more but that's part of it. Every truck is different. You have to look at what you are buying. Let the truck tell you it's story. Owners seem to have memory problems when selling vehicles. If the truck is beat to hell then you know the story. If it's a clean looking truck somebody probably took care of it.

This video was done a long time ago. Prices might have gone up. The link includes 2 axles. So that is about $100 each.

+nathan I think it's a lot more than 140ft lbs for that big nut. The lug nuts are 120ft lbs.

when I did mine it was on a 1995 Chevy 1500 blazer/Tahoe 2dr model and I was told that the axel nut had to be tork to 140 foot pounds

+Game Bred Duramax I agree, on the road. offroad Ill take axle. hard to believe the gm 3500 are the lowest truck. Ford and Dodge jack them sky high for no reason other than ego. 12inch drop hitch on a stock truck yeehaa.

Not only that, but I've been to many many county Fair pulling events where guys hook up there trucks. EVERY Ford and Dodge there was wheel (I guess it would be axle) hopping. Enough where you could audibly hear the engine rpm change. I one Ford broke the front drive shaft from it. Whereas every GM truck there stayed planted and drug that bitch lol.
