Cueing in a straight line. Establishing fixed points in your cueing action includes how you should create good fixed points to the body, specifically the chest. This will help you deliver the cue in a straight line and strike the cue ball correctly. Barry Stark, World Snooker Coach, tutorial.#cueball #snookercoach #snookercoaching #worldsnooker #billiards

Love your snooker coaching videos, Barry! I'm an old guy (50's) trying to understand this wonderful green baize game with varying success! Just love the detail you give in trying to make this very difficult game seem easier... with the practice you put in of course. HAPPY NEW YEAR & hope you can still find skills you haven't posted yet in 2019 lol

Dear all, I find out that here is a very very very important item around 0:40. Take the chest to the cue. Especially to the player who are not strong, because they do not have strong muscles on the chest, so it will leave much space between the cue and the chest, which is very easily cause the cue goes across the line of aim after shot. As of example of Judd and Un-noon, they all thin player, when get down to the table, you can see their body is very close to cue.

"Body to the cue": In 50 years of playing I never heard of that before, I'll give it a try. But I also observe that a number of the pros now bring their chin down onto the cue, which performs that and another function (tells them when they are dropping the butt end) - I'd try that but I wear glasses and can't get that low without looking over the frames. I learned out of Joe Davis' book many years ago, and I have the same problem as he did, a very poor right eye, therefore I stand with my chin across the cue. Recently I have adopted a bent rather than straight left arm and I re-oriented my body and feet to a more straight-on stance, as I see the pros now do. Altogether that gets me closer to the cue ball and eases my age related neck stiffness, and allows a longer reach and follow through when I need it. But normally I move my grip up the cue a few inches and hold the cue more delicately (even for deep screw, which is completely opposite to the Joe Davis advice). The result is much better striking and I can now easily screw back full table length. However, I started missing shots! I tracked that down to my left (good) eye not being in the same relative position as it was before, so now I have to remember to turn my chin to the right a fraction before settling my aim, and my shot average has improved again, more like when I was a young hooligan! Everything is connected.
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 7 лет назад
GDA. You are so right everything is connected and one size does not fit all. What works for one individual can be alien to another. I to have age related neck stiffness and perform daily exercises to reduce the problem. I can recommend a book called " Treat your own neck" by Robin McKenzie. I found it helpful.
@gdasailor4634

Thanks Barry, I'll look it up, and I am impressed that you took the time to respond to "li'l old me"! I am now bending my knees just a fraction more to get right down to table level and sight through my glasses, which improves my aim, but limits the follow through, damn! Also the stance permits trapping the cue between my chin (left side of the chin in my case) and chest, as well as bridge hand of course. This improves striking accuracy and everything that goes with that. I'm not sure how people with two good eyes actually aim, but for me, starting with straight shots, I find "center" by "balancing" the perspective gaps from the two sides of the cue ball to the object ball. Then of course make any small adjustments necessary to suit the table angle. If that is different than as others do it, then I think it is necessary for me because I can only use one eye. For larger angles it is something like "half ball +/-". Thanks again for your very informative lessons. I would say that in just this last month I have improved more than in the previous year - however after 40 years of not playing, I have a lot of re-learning to do! Gregory

Hi Coach! This question was asked before but someone else claimed to answer when, in fact, they did not.When bringing the body to the cue, are we talking about actual contact, and if so, how much? Would a light contact be preferable, or doesn't it make much difference if it's a bit heavier? I've been playing for years, but as I'm a bit older now I'm also a bit bigger, so I'm feeling the contact with my chest a bit more (or perhaps, I'm just more conscious of it).
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 6 лет назад
Neil. Tension in any area is in my opinion bad for your game, with that in mind the contact between the body and the cue should be light. It is doubtful that your increase in size has increased the pressure but it is certainly possible that you have become more aware of it.

i was cueing offline and i was hitting my chest after the delivery however the tip was way to the left and never straight delivery. now i am online by making some changes .but now i hit the bottom of my rib although the cue tip is dead straight. i used to drop my shoulder but now i cannot drop as much as i used to, and i also cannot follow through as much as i used to but the cueing is very straight now. the only concern is where the grip should hit? is it ok to keep practicing and get used to this? and where exactly the grip should hit the chest, under the chest, rib, under the rib? thank you
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 4 года назад
Mustafa. Players who drop their elbow tend to get through the ball a little more and this can be an advantage as long as you get through the ball straight, just watch Ronnie O'Sullivan on some of his shots. However a lot of players find this very difficult and only cue to the chest. As long as you are getting through the ball sufficiently and straight I wouldn't worry about where the hand hits the chest.

I think if you are right-handed and left-eye dominant, then it's very natural to rest your chin on the cue. If you are right-handed and right-eye dominant, then you are twist your head direction a little to rest your chin on the cue. If you don't twist your head direction a little bit, then you weak eye (left eye) will be in the front, then your eyesight is not in its best.

Thanks for lovely videos. I have a little problem with my game. I live in Pakistan so summers here are really heated. Due to this, i get moisture on my hand which makes my cue stick to bridge and creates a lot of friction which in result leads to miscue. I often use simple powder for overcoming this problem. But i have read somewhere that using powder etc. is not good for my cue. What do you recommend? How should i overcome this issue?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 7 лет назад
Umer. If you have varnish on your cue this can exacerbate the problem. The normal method is to just to wipe your cue with a damp cloth and then thoroughly dry it. I don't believe powder will damage the cue in any way but rather than ordinary talcum powder perhaps foot powder will be better at absorbing sweat etc. on your hands. A lot of players who have this problem wear a glove on their bridge hand, these are easy to obtain, designed for the purpose and are effective.

Hi Barry, thank you for this video. Im struggling to be inline with a line of the shot. Im right handed, right eye is also my dominant eye. For some reason when I put my cue down to the shot, my right hand goes offline like 1 inch towards my body even before I put body to the cue. So from the very begining of placing the cue Im already offline. I watched your videos before and I focus on putting my body to the cue, not cue to the body but looks like my cue placement is off from the start. Do you have an idea how to remedy it? I tried cueing along D line and up down on the table and cue ball always bounce to the right like I was using right hand side. I was not using any side and I checked it multiple times like you said in different video (look down on cue ball). I would be very glad for any help. Thank you for your videos and for help you providing to us. :)
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 6 лет назад
Martin. This is difficult to understand without seeing what you are doing, but place the cue on the baulk line, now keep it still and adopt the cueing position making sure you don't move the cue. Look along the cue and determine that you are aiming correctly along the baulk line, if not it is possible that you are using your dominant eye incorrectly. If the right hand moves towards the body that will mean that the cue tip will move to the right and result in cueing across the ball, giving the impression in your case that you are applying right hand side. Also try placing two pieces of chalk on the cushion rail equally spaced either side of the baulk line and cueing between them as young Westley did in one of my videos.

So the cue touches the chest in order to maintain a straight line? So right hand, chest, chin and left hand all touching the cue to keep it straight?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 6 лет назад
Matthew. Most players play this way now but some do not use the chest at all, some start the cue action with the cue on the chest and then go past the chest in the follow through., whatever gives you success is right for you.
@matthewthomas2546
@matthewthomas2546 6 лет назад
Thanks for the reply Barry, I think I cue pretty straight anyway but sometimes on the low power shots I'm not as consistent and tend to wobble a bit (might not be a common problem for most players). I'll try using the body to stabilise the cue and see if that helps.

Hi Barry, when I set up a red beside the cue ball and hold my stroke after the shot how many inches should my cue have gone through the front of the ball? Thanks!
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 7 лет назад
A six inch follow through is adequate for a snooker player. A better way to measure this is to put a pencil mark on the cue where your thumb meets your fore finger and when your cue tip is close to the cue ball. Put another pencil mark six inches away from the first. When you have played the shot the second mark should be approximately where the first one was. Use a soft grade pencil to avoid damaging your cue and please check out my video on the matter.
@pedersen47
@pedersen47 7 лет назад
HI Barry. I used the pencil. Only have four inches...Where should i look first to increase this to six? thanks!
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 7 лет назад
Chris. Sorry for late reply. Please look at my video on where to hold the cue and where to place your bridge hand. Its amazing how moving your cue hand back a little, moving your bridge hand forward a little and bending your bridge arm slightly can accumulate the extra distance you need on the follow through.

Hi Barry.. i was playing at my local club and my opponent noticed my elbow was pointing slightly outward around 95 degree's (+-), however i felt i was cueing straight. dose the elbow have to be 90 degrees to cue straight? or does it come down to how it's delivered?. I'm struggling to get over the mental battle I'm now facing. thanks.
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 7 лет назад
Dale. If a player is cueing straight and he can play all the shots, I don't care where his elbow is pointing. However, there is no doubt that some players would benefit from adopting a more conventional position. Place yourself on video and make your own judgement, test your cueing on the baulk line and if still in doubt seek out a good coach to have a look.
@dale1552

Barry Stark Snooker Coach thank you Barry. i certainly can't play all shots as I'm still learning but I feel more comfortable, i feel i can cue straight it's my previous shot routine i need to work on and getting on the line of the shot without rushing and getting down to the shot without a thought.

Should I leave some space between my chest and the cue?I sometimes hit my chest when I make the plot with strong back swing if I let the cue stick to the chest.
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 5 лет назад
Anson. Most top players have the cue touching the chest during the preparation and the start of the cue delivery, as the cue is delivered some go past the chest particularly on power shots, to facilitate this some alter the grip slightly. This is generally not for beginners and requires a lot of cue control.
@darkrainbow0925
@darkrainbow0925 5 лет назад
Thank you. Or should I increase he back swing a little bit so that I can plot the ball before my fist hit my chest?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 5 лет назад
Anson. If you are holding the cue in the right position you will always hit the ball before the hand reaches the chest. Its generally a good idea for players to lengthen their back swing when they are trying to develop a straight cue action, by doing this they are grooving the muscle action in the correct manner, it can always be shortened later when the player is satisfied that he has achieved this.

I still can't plot straightly... I am sure that the problem is not the bridge. Is that the cue just touch the chest is enough?

My question is, how exactly do you "bring your body to the cue?". Are you Leaning into it? Lowering into it? I have been trying this and still feel like it is throwing my cue line off.
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach Год назад
Janet. Certainly leaning into the cue is likely to push the cue off line, lowering into it is better and less likely to move the cue. It goes without saying that once the cue is on line then the player has to find a way of taking the body to the cue without moving it. Keep working at it and good luck.

Found it. Allow me to ask this. I tend to pot better when the chest is firmly on the cue not tightly. But recently i heard the cue is only "supposed" to brushing on me chest and im struggling to pot simple balls help pls barry
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 6 лет назад
Daniel. Tension in any area of a players technique is bad and that includes the cue being firmly against the chest. What I suggest you do is without hitting any ball just cue along the baulk line without the chest touching the cue at all. You see, the chest is capable of hiding a flaw in your technique so taking the chest away will expose any flaw. You should be able to keep the cue straight without using the chest for support, if you can't then your cue action needs some work. Once you have worked on this and corrected any problems (without hitting balls) it is time to bring the chest back into your action

On top of that sir. Im practicing cueing at my home dining table with a stack of paper which i drawn a line however short qns. When playing an imaginary shot do i look at the "white" or pick something in the distance to be the "red"
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 6 лет назад
Daniel. What you are doing with this type of practise is to groove your cue action, you need to know exactly how you do it, what sensations you feel, what part of the hand is in contact with the cue at every part of the action. Lastly you need to know that you are cueing straight so look at the cue. Slow it down almost to slow motion, make it as long and smooth as you can and feel those sensations. Good luck.
