Greg Howe Band: Greg Howe, Gianluca Palmieri, Jon Reshard, David Cook, Kick it all over Live at Monteroduni (Isernia - Italy) Pignatelli Castle Eddie Lang Jazz Festival 6 August 2010
Probably the greatest living guitarist, playing a cut by the greatest tenor player ever, evoking the approach of Hendrix in the riffing. Serious greatness here.
The best all around guitarist hands down always entertaining and every note is appropriate And he’s so mellow and humble what a gift from god for music and all of us on the planet
Wow?! I just discovered Greg's playing tonight! Amazing! Unbelievable technique, shreds like the best, interesting unique individual style, chops-a-plenty, jazz theory - down obviously, young and so far to go even though he's a monster already: one question Greg? Where's the music? Playing Coltrane - a la Hendrix? What? And the people that say he's the greatest guitarist living????? Grow up!
I know im gonna see some fanatics saying his the beast and stuff. but not this kinda comment XD. I somewhat agree with you. was expecting a bit closer to the real fifth modes (or whatever it called) giant steps my self, but well, what was I expect :p . but now reading you its like , well, that's too much man hahahaha! it still awesome knowing its greg howe . that probably the closer he can do to the real thing eh ehe eh. the keyboard did better I think. but that's just another regular giant steps then :D at the very least he was forced to do more phrasing here hahahahha. try to listen to his album btw. its nice and hard at the same time. try introspection album. its here on youtube
Its hardly any surprise that people like Greg exist now: BECAUSE OF what went before!!! But all respect: Greg, man, you're awesome; superb! Find your true voice: you will be a god of guitar!
I guess my comment is totally based on what I've been exposed to. I'm also a big fan of Alan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, Hadley Hockensmith, Luis Salinas , Robben Ford .Greg Howe somehow enfuses these guitarists into one. Just mind blowing where he is heading to. I accept that it's not a contest having said that many times before Lol. Amazing technique tone and emotion all the ingredients that tempts me to make quite a bold statement. I guess to each is own and being a guitarist myself with many many influences during my almost fifty years of playing my continual quest is to recognize the true great players out there. Greg Howe is simply one of them.. I can not say that I idolize his playing. Let's say I appreciate his interpretation and execution thereof immensely. I can safely say that I idolize the Beatles though..... Thanks for responding to my bold statement. Believe me I'm surprised that someone responded to it. Keep enjoying !!
Greg is a phenomena! Stunning! Actually stands way out from the crowd: and these days - that's not easy - he's special that's for sure. I hope he can make some music out of his tremendous ability!
@imguitarted Personally I think it's in the spirit of jazz for him to play his own interpretation instead of playing like Coltrane. If I want to listen someone play like Coltrane, I'll listen to Coltrane ;)
I recall John McLaughlin (you want to mention "greatest???") saying the same thing about Frank Gambale: well he did eventually come through, with guitar playing that no one can do, and even music that is fantastic.
You just discovered him and you're already trolling? Who are you to tell Greg he isn't allowed to combine Coltrane and Hendrix? Enjoy or go away; nobody needs your "guidance" on choosing their favorite player is, nor on how to cover Giant Steps.
Greg has a similar potential; but people wait before you wet your pants, please?! Or at least do a few years of listening to what guitarists have been doing since 1970!!! JMcL, Holdsworth, etc. Hello that was 40+ years ago!?!?!
+Clive Fester it's not a contest you know. There are many truly amazing guitarists around. Greg absolutely idolizes Allan Holdsworth, maybe more so than you idolize Greg. I had a couple of 1 to 1 lessons with Greg and when I brought up Holdsworth as someone I would like to get to grips with Greg just stopped the conversation and announced "Allan is from a different solar system. A DIFFERENT SOLAR SYSTEM!". Those were his words, trying discourage me from biting off more than he felt I could chew, bearing mind that I've been playing 30 years. I might not be Greg Howe or Allan Holdsworth but I'm no slouch on the guitar either.
