07/03/2022 Oregon cougar hunt and harvest!

I got it done on a two day intentional apex predation hunt in Oregon’s Starkey hunting unit.
After suffering through crazy thunderstorms the first day, I was able to harvest a huge female cougar on the second morning of this fair chase, public lands, hunt.
I thank primary arms optics, Atheris Rifle company, Mystery Ranch packs, Crispi boots Bowers Group Suppressors and Ewe So Dirty products for your support in my quest to inspire and educate people on the importance of intentional apex predator hunting, abatement and management.

I didn’t know how many cougars were wasted by depredation I was already convinced thanks to u and the comments that it was not only good meat but necessary considering the attraction most hunters have to elk and deer and dwindling numbers in those species but it’s keeping them from behaviors that will lead them to be wasted. Thanks for the conservation education

The additional caveat is Wolves as well. If we look at the example of Yellowstone, where they had a 68% decrease in cougar population after wolves got established, it bring a big concern for us here, now. We have huge cougar populations and growing wolf packs in Oregon and Washington. Seems like a ok thing, that cougars will reduce, but in addition to the wolves creating another problem, the cougar population decline is mostly from starvation, as the wolves displace the elk from where cougars would traditionally hunt them… That means a huge, starving wolf population… that means we will likely be seeing a sharp increase in cougar depredations on livestock and pets, and potentially more human attacks as well… This is pretty important work to be doing right now really…

I have seen this first hand, very few elk in the back country. The elk have moved closer to civilization where they get some refuge from the wolves. Also cougars are killing more often because they are constantly getting bumped off of their kill by wolves. Cougars made a kill every week to ten days, now they can’t maintain their kill so they are forced to take down another animal at shorter intervals.

I'm not gonna lie. When you said, I think today was a good day..... The lyrics "because I didn't even have to shoot my ak".... Popped Into my head.....😂😂😂 But I think it's good to see brothers protecting livestock and children, and earning fresh meat for the barbeque. What can I say, I was born in the 80s and the radio songs of the 90s and early 2000s are sometimes lingering in my head. 😂 as long as you have dreads and you say, "I think today was a good day....".... Nice work! I shot a cougar on the Deschutes River a few years ago on my son's sheep hunt. Your video made me research the use of motorized decoys as I have always thought that would be a VERY effective way to hunt cougar, but thought that was prohibited. I went back to my old regs and saw that 2018 was the last year that stated, "The use of decoys with moving parts is prohibited for big game species." That makes me thrilled that this was dropped from the regs! I enjoyed your video very much and you have a new subscriber.
@apex-livingwithpredators8379
I can say that once the two cats I shot this year locked on the flag, they disregarded scent. Definitely effective to get them in those last hundred yards or so after they hang up, watching while still hidden.

@@apex-livingwithpredators8379 I used to live on a larger property with both bobcat and cougar. We had a bobcat that had twice walked up the stairs to our second story deck and pinned down our house cat. I got permission to kill the cat. I called the manufacturer of the call I use (in Arizona I believe) and asked the owner for his recommendation of how to kill that bobcat. He said to turn the call on, and don't vary the volume, don't start and stop it, just let it call. He said cats are so curious, they just can't not come check it out. I set up in the late afternoon and it took less than 30 minutes to shoot that bobcat.

I was there a couple weeks ago and called in and shot a second cougar in the McCoy creek drainage. I did see a good herd of elk with 4-5 bulls. It’s the healthiest I’ve seen those elk in a long long time, because of the abundant forage, the spikes all had 2-3’ long antlers! That was only one heard though… still a lot of cats and there are wolves there now too. Not nearly what it was when I started hunting there 33 years ago.
