As an analgesic, an arthritis specialist, it is often necessary to be able to understand the administrative dose based on weight and height for each patient. Thanks for your review.
Health care workers in the US are reluctant to treat pain. I had a total hip replacement & my surgeon decided pain management wasn't a priority. Instead of treating my post-op pain, recovery was excruciating. This guy, instead of pain medication, decided gabapentin was the only thing for me, which of course wasn't even close. I understand the efficacy of gaba should be an adjunct to real pain medication. Sadly, the medical/nursing folks have a knee-jerk reaction to this "opioid crisis" & do not realize many of us are really hurting & won't become addicts.
I know, bit is totally ridiculous that you a person cannot get something that really helps.. I would like them to have feel some of what we have to deal with-- I would not want anyone to feel that bad for long* but, it would drive the point home!
Try the UK practitioners are reluctant to prescribe opioid because we have socialised health care and the gutter press go mad about 'junkies getting high on taxpayers money'. So we find our own ways to deal with pain.
As a former cancer patient, I understand what you are saying. In California anyone can smoke weed just for fun, but most doctors REFUSE to treat pain properly with prescription drugs. A LOT of practitioner offices are “narcotic free” meaning even if it is medically necessary, they will not prescribe the medicine you need for pain.
That is directly what happened to me. As a result of the pain and discomfort after total hip replacement I was reluctant to do anything much more active than watch TV and surf the Internet. Without pain relief, I suffered severe muscle atrophy. Now, one year post surgery, I still cannot walk without canes. People don’t realize that when the surgeon does a total hip replacement, they are sawing off one of the largest bones in your body. Medicine of the 2020s has gone a big step backwards.
Pregabalin is considered a controlled substance in some US states. After trying many medications and different dosages for my FM pain, 50 mg pregabalin bid gives the best balance of pain control with the fewest side effects.
I was prescribed lyrica for fibromyalgia I ended up on the highest dose as my body became dependant on it. I went to a pain clinic for 3 weeks they told me that it was no longer working for me. So I dropped down slowly then I suddenly started feeling depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts so I checked into a rehab. The doctor took me off too quickly he took me down 25mg every other day I went from 275mg to 75mg in less than 2 weeks. I ended up suffering 2 years of hell from withdrawals, I suffered anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, chills, sweats, loud tinnitus and seizures none I had before that drug. I have been completely off for over 2 years now and I still suffer severe icy chills, loud tinnitus and funny turns. I am hoping that the seizures have stopped as 19 in less than 2 years was enough. Unfortunately many health care professional don't understand withdrawals from lyrica and there is no help for us.
Yeah that stupid doctor caused you unnecessary suffering by dropping you way too quickly. You should have been dropping 25 mg a week/10days...not every day..hell no. Lyrica withdrawal is very similar to Xanax withdrawal... DANGEROUS to drop too fast.
So helpful. I just started Lyrica and love the way it has completely taken away my pain. It's been years living with chronic pain. I also recently noticed I've gained weight but hadn't changed my habits. So...now I have to find new ways to combat that weight gain, but now without pain, I can easily exercise.
Tq so much doctor, iam suffering with cervical spondylitis, more pain in my left arm and my upper back,my doctor advised pregabalin twice a day ,I got got good relief,I got more doiets..you gave very good clarification with your all 10question N answers,tq so much my dear doctor,tq 🙏🏻this is lathaji from INDIA 🇮🇳 🤝💐.
I am on pregabalin for my diabetic neuropathy. I am currently taking 200mg per day and its working quite well at this dose....for now. It does suggest to take it twice a day. But I find the pain less in the morning. So I take 2 50mg at 1pm and another 2 at around 7pm, enough time to make sure they are working before I turn in. I am glad I take it at 1pm. I am off work at 2pm and that way the brain fog doesnt affect my work. Peace all. :-)

I was taking 150 mg twice a day, but started having problems with memory loss! I was so scared because it was very unexpected and called my neurologist. She said this was a side effect and lowered the dosage to 75mg twice a day. The side effect subsided.
I was on Pregabalin for 9 years. I slowly went from 75mg up to 450mg a day for nerve pain. It gave me insomnia, elevated mood/high, disinhibition. I was a nightmare and went to therapy to work out what was wrong. Once I finally worked out the Pregabalin was causing me all these issues I stopped it immediately along with mirtazapine. I had terribly bad withdrawals, suicidal and delusional. But I knew it was the withdrawal so hung on in there. I sadly lost my job due to the nerve pain that came back. But I have my brain and personality back. I've heard some pretty bad stories from other people since stopping Pregabalin. It does help nerve pain but ask friends and family to keep an eye out for strange behaviour.
I have started taking pregabalin 75 mg. For my hip pains and it has helped some. But I also like taking it because it helps my insomnia a lot! Lyrica and a 5mg melatonin lets me get some sleep . Will that amount cause me to gain weight? I am too heavy already which aggravates my hip pain. I am 72 yrs old, 5’3, 170 lbs. - can’t afford to gain more!!!
I was on 500 mg and reduced to 150 mg without problems 🤷🏻♀️😬 i was on it 11 years ago already was taking the max dosage and got rid off it by myself without withdrawal or whatsoever.but i had to say I've been through an opiate withdrawal 13 years ago maybe that's why i didn't found it to harsh to reducing it 🤷🏻♀️
Dear Dr. Andrea . At the moment I use cbd oil to control pain , because it doesn't have side effects and is natural. However it is expensive. If I can no longer afford to use it all the time, can I take gabapentin or the other one at the same time as cbd oil . In order to make the change as " painlessly " as possible. I should say that i also take 100 mgs tramadol every day , prescribed. Thank-you so much for your help . K. Davis
Thank you for the info. I've had a problem with chronic leg pain, which resulted in me taking heroin just so that I could continue to function normally and walk! I've recently quit the heroin and found that pregabalin helps with both the leg pain and also with the extended withdrawal effects from shooting heroin 6 times a day for 5 years! I'm seeing my doc next week and hoping to get a supply of pregabalin.
I would highly suggest your Dr give you Suboxone,l never suffered l had been on strong narc pain meds for 25-25 yrs l just got fed up with taking all the pain meds because it wasn't helping any more and stopped had l realized the withdrawals l never would had done that. I found a wonderful Dr who put me on suboxone 1mg two times which is this is the lowest dose l also found it really helped my anxiety. It's been four years and l have my life back, Suboxone addressed not only the horrible withdrawals but helped my anxiety as well.
Thank you for this great presentation. I have suffered peripheral nerve pain and just had two back surgeries eleven weeks ago. The surgeon just prescribed Pregabalin and I am hopeful this works. I certainly appreciate this informative video.
I take Lyrica for restless legs. For years I didn't know what was going on with my kicking legs when I rest or go to bed. It's the best thing I ever did, absolutely no kicking or that nasty feeling of a slow electric shock running up my legs.
It has worked wonders for me. I have also had restless legs and random "tic" like movements for going on 6 years now, and Lyrica has helped so so much. Feels good I can go to work without worrying about everything flying out of my hands
I'm on Lyrica as well for restless legs. It helped me so much but the weight gain is harsh. I'm 5'0 and had in the beginning (was right after I gave birth) 60kg now I'm almost 80 😭 i reduced my dosage from 500 mg to 150 mg but I'm still gaining weight. I'm also tracking my calories been mostly under 1300cals a day. I'm trying now to get rid off Lyrica completely because the weight gain is not tolerable. I feel handicapped by it, can't move as before, my knees are hurting me, my back pains me. So as much as it helped me i have to stop taking it and maybe just taking it as a emergency medication when it's getting to bad with my legs 🤷🏻♀️
Pregabalin made me hungry all the time and made me gain weight. Also became very inhibited and talkative like I was drunk. Switching to the highest dose of Gabapentin did not increase my appetite and did not cause any weight problems, or make me feel drunk. The only problem is that the Gabapentin takes twice as long to reduce the pain as the Pregabalin, often taking 1 and a half to 2 hours to relieve the pain.
Thanks for sharing your story. Can you tell what dose you are taking for gabapentin? I had tried gabapentin before and it was only 50% helpful. Currently i am on lyrica (99% pain improvement) but i feel very drowsy and drunk as you described. I am taking 125 mg per day!! If gabapentin can help me if i take it longer then i would love to try that
So you can feel effects right after you take it,like you wrote 1.5-2h????They say it takes up to two weeks to feel its potencial of full effects...Will I feel an effect the day I take it?Different resources says different thing.Hope you can answer my question.
I was on 150mg a day for myself sciatica pain. I hated it with a passion, always felt dizzy, lightheaded. When I suddenly stopped taking it, it took me 2 weeks the withdrawals were horrendous. It only helped to reduce the pain for the first few months. I am now on amitriptyline, not as bad as pregabalin, but it doesn't help either.
Have you tried CBD oil? It is expensive and some people cannot handle it . Also please be careful when taking it with other pills because we are all different. Too many doctors take the cookie cutter approach to patients . We are not all the same.
Trying to stop using this medication is just like , or worse withdrawal from opioids ! Severe anxiety and diarrhea. Must use titration to stop. I felt horrible. Please don’t take it if possible.
Thank you for this educational video. Pregablin is effective for me at a 50 mg at night as prescribed by my somnologist for multiple micro-arousals during sleep due to RLS. However, there are side effects (dry mouth in the morning and difficulty concentrating) even at this next to the smallest dose available of 25 mg.
Thanks, Dr. Andrea. You explained that so well. I’ve been taking pregabalin for about 5 years now and it does help some with my nerve pain. My main side effect was brain fog so I lowered my dose and it seems to have helped lessen it.
Worked for less then a week, dose increased with no benefit then try stopping Lyrica and Wow! very bad WD's nervous, panic and severe depression for a week and that was only after I took less and less after being on it less then two months. I had baclofen which did not help either with pain but did take the edge off of the withdrawl.
From 1 April 2019, gabapentin and pregabalin are Schedule 3 controlled drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001, and Class C of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. This means that additional requirements are needed on the prescription. For example, the dose must be clearly defined.
Please be careful when taking Lyrica and Cymbalta, for some it works but for others it can have SERIOUS side effects 😢, our daughter was on this medication for nerve pain but had severe suicidal thoughts & in 2019 she took her life, at the time we had no idea that this was a "side effect' of these medications. Please be careful & tell your doctor if you have any suicidal feelings.
Thank you! The weight was the thing I noticed. Since I started pregabalin for fibromyalgia (helped around a year and now they increased my dose) I have gained at least 5 kilos and might seem like little but I have a specific diet due food allergies and was hard to gain any weight. So it amazed me how clear the side effect is. I hopefully can change my treatment mostly because the pain is increasing.
I am a registered nurse with fibromyalgia and the Pregabalin made me hungry like a wild dog non-stop and caused me to gain weight. I stopped the Pregabalin and changed over to it’s older cousin drug called Gabapentin in the same drug class, and the hunger and weight gain did not happen at all like the Pregabalin. The thing that you need to know is that the Gabapentin is that it takes twice as long to kick in to relieve the pain, about 1 and a half hours to two hours. Also the milligram dosage is higher by about three times the dose compared to the Pregabalin because it is absorbed differently in the small intestine. So for example I take 3600mg. per day which is the maximum recommended per day. I take3 400mg. capsules three times a day. It works as well for my fibromyalgia pain as the Lyrica with none of the weight gain, hunger or feeling like I was drunk. You may have to look up a chart to show to your doctor that compares equivalent dosing comparing the two drugs so he/she is not afraid to prescribe enough. Doctors usually start out on the lowest dose to see if the patient gets relief and tolerance. Doctors usually forget to increase the dose unless the patient asks. I am a 130 pound female and take this dose because it is absorbed differently than the Pregabalin, but they both act very much the same in one’s brain. I was so glad when I switched because I could not tolerate gaining a lot of weight! Good luck, call me if you need to ask any questions 281 507-4742 Lesley Sears RN
@@amyadeline9497 side effects listed in UK include risk of physical and mental dependence. Try and stop taking it! It's same as Xanax withdrawal to me, I've done heroin/ opium and methadone withdrawal before but this can be worse. Seizures, sudden cardiac death, insomnia, derealization, the desire to die rather than keep suffering and this can last from months to years. If you take something like this daily it's likely forever.
Thanks so much for this informative video. You surely are well versed in your discipline. I have severe chronic pain in my lower half of the body, from the belly button down. My doctor started with tramadol, now it's gabapentin. Both work but not fully. Maybe 60%. Your discussion on gabapentin and its efficacy and side effects help my literature greatly.
Thank you so much for this. This is the best video I have seen explaining Pregabalin. I think I need to go back to my Dr as I have chronic pain and I only take 75mg 3 times a day
Dual reuptake inhibitors such as tricyclics, SSRIs and SNRIs have the strongest evidence, but holistic interventions including psychology, lifestyle changes, considered copharmacy etc are the only way out - the way out is the way in!
Hello. I was inpatient in a pain clinic for 15 days here in Germany in my hometown, where I was dosed to 2 times 100 mg pregabalin for the first 7 days from initially 2 times 50mg until one day before my discharge. This also worked well for me, because except for tolerable fatigue and drowsiness, my pain has been positively influenced. At home, after three days, however, side neck pain and ear pain were suddenly added only on the right side. Now I don't know if there are other side effects or just the consequences of stretching the lateral neck muscles. I started to reduce 50 mg at once because I also probably had problems with the right mucous gland in the mouth. It's a pity, as it really gave me relief. I hope that I will soon be able to go up to 2 times 75 mg again.
@@DrAndreaFurlan Hello Doc. Me again. I now had to stop pregabalin because of the side effects that became more and more. The benefit/risk factor had gone completely negative. At the moment I stick to Metamizole, which to my knowledge is not distributed in Canada here in Germany but already, more bad than quite afloat because I do not want to take opioids that I have been prescribed. Not yet. Greetings from Germany, Thomas .

I am 86 years. Taking this drug since a year. But I still suffer from insomnia. However even antihistamine or some cough syrups which make others sleepy the whole keeps me awake and alert Ever since taking pregabalin NT my health providers have stopped prescribing restyl or anxit. Sometimes I worry whether taking pregabalinNT with anxit has any adverse effect.
Pregabalin oral capsule is used for long-term treatment. It comes with serious risks if you don't take it as prescribed. If you stop taking the drug suddenly or don't take it at all: Your pain or seizures won't go away or may get worse.
Wow , good information, thx again. For me it was pretty good for my chronic pain but and it is a big but …. I would be so confused at night. Getting up to go to the bathroom was an adventure…. Still dont know where to go to help lowering my stupid pain .
When I use Pregabalin 75 mg. I get good sleep. But I used to get dizziness in day time. Further, my feet swell if I take 3 days. I was a diabetic person. But now almost I recovered
Thank you so much for this video. I've been taking Pregabalin since 2017 and it really helped my life and wellness. my pain is manageable, my migraine attacks are very rare these days, and i have great confidence in public speaking and social interaction now more than ever. I explain in the video that dependence and withdrawal symptoms happen with many medications, including thyroid hormones. People don't say they are addicted to thyroid hormones.
It is an addictive drug and don't let any doctor tell you any difffently. The official Lyrica website warnings now states it has addictive potential. Why is it so hard for doctors to research the drugs they prescribe? Good on you for getting off it.

Professionally presented but I think researchers need to find a solution to the trend of weight gain for consumers of the drug. It’s not enough to say, “you will gain weight” and brush it to the side like it’s nothing.
Hello Dr.Andrea . I'm a male in my mid 40s with sciatica nerve pain. My doctor prescribed me Pregabalin 150 mg twice a day. It's now been 5 weeks on the medication. Question can taking Pregabalin cause sexual side effects like lowered libido, erectile dysfunction and less effective orgasms? Thank you.
I was prescribed Gabapentin 600mg 3 times daily. It did not help with my pain, but it did cause me to have increased appetite, change in my vision and extreme depression. Would I have the same side effects with Pregabalin? Just because I had no relief with Gabapentin does this mean that I would not receive relief with Pregabalin? Thank you.
When I separated from my wife and boy I moved to Brisbane all by myself. It was the loneliest time of my life. My GP put me on an antidepressant called 'lyrica'. I did some research and was lead to a Scottish girl on RU-vid by the name of Dana Beaton. She was posting regular videos to show her followers what the drug was doing to her. I wrote some comments and made a strong connection with her. I tried several ways to chat in private but she never played the game. I became very bitter and removed all my comments. 3 years later I did a search and found out that she has removed all her videos and deleted her entire online presence. My quest is to find this girl and reconnect.
Taking it at the moment but so far all it seems to be doing is making my thigh and knee swell up. this is on 75mg i would hate to think how painful my leg and knee would get if the dose is higher. Maybe not best for me.

Question: If Pregablin "calms nerves", is the idea to take it for a fixed duration of time until the nerves are calmed down and then when you come off it the nerves remain calm??? OR....does it only calms nerves WHILST taking it hence loosing it's effect when you finish taking it?
I've gained a lot of weight on Pregabalin. Like 4 clothing sizes more without eating more and with more movement bc it made my pain so much better. It makes my Fibromyalgia sooo much better, I'm actually able to work 4 days a week now. I'm able to move and exercise more and have such a better quality of life. I could do without the medical weight discrimination, since I'm healthier than ever, just fatter. But they like to focus on my weight as the only thing that matters. I dont care, I'm very greatful for Pregabalin. The only thing that bothers me is that my libido is completley dead.

Do you have any research to back up that statement that pregabalin is more effective after 3 to 6 months, anything can be addictive, including Lyrica. It should not be controlled though. Neither should low-dose benzodiazepines. as both are significantly less toxic and carcinogenic, then ethanol is I think if you should be able to buy ethanol, you should be able to buy pretty much any schedule 4 compound in the United States.
Been on Lyrica for over a year, went off (safely with dr advice) to see if it did anything. Holy crap was it ever helping. Reached my lowest point lying in bed for most of the day because everything hurt - 100mg/day fixed it. Question... weight gain is a side effect - does it change metabolism or just make you want to eat more? I want to prevent this because I am obese and losing weight through diet.
Both. I'm on pregabalin since a year again and I'm tracking my cals since I gave birth to my daughter 3 years ago. Even though I'm mostly under 1300cals a day i gained weight from 60 to almost 80 kg so yes its messing with your metabolism and makes you more hungry plus your body is restraining water on it. But as it is with side effects it's not on everyone who has them
Are the weight gain effects great. I dont eat alot but still am getting bigger. I've been on pre for about 10 years and have gone up to 1200mg per day to manage my pain, 3 in the a.m. 3 in the p.m., dr's orders of course. Neurologist states I should take it even higher doses...but that is too risky for me. Since taking it I don't really know who I am at all.
I hope you're feeling better and got your prescription all sorted. Just been reading through comments trying to figure out what is best for me. I have severe spinal injury and pain from car accident. Basically controls my whole life
Question: 6. Not toxic to the liver or kidney. I’m on Pregabalin and I have had kidney cancer and I’ve had kidney stones several times. Doe you think I should tell my pain management doctor. He did schedule me for an MRI not knowing that I have had brain coils installed back in 2013, from a ruptured brain aneurysm and stroke.
I take 1 mg Mirapex twice daily and 150 mg pregabalin three times daily to control my severe RLS. My prior meds, Gabapentin and ropinirole, had stopped working for me.
