Important thing to note is that loyalty abilities of a permanent may only be activated once per turn. Doesn't matter if you exile a million different planeswalkers under the enigma jewel, you only get one loyalty ability that turn.
Also it wasn't letting him even tap it a second time, despite having two instances of the mana ability, so I don't think redundant abilities do anything, loyalty or otherwise.
This is right, but it's not fully explained here. The important thing is that you're not activating the exiled card, the exiled cards give their abilities to the Locus. Then as you said, you can only activate loyalty abilities of a permanent once per turn as per 603.3. (Unless you have something like Leori, or Oath of Teferi)
@@NightChime It's hard to say for sure just watching, but Arena auto-passes when the only thing you can do is make mana, so it's possible that's why he couldn't use the tap ability.
@@brennanruiz1803 i alwats wondered how things might have worked out if loyality abilities tapped planesealkers as well. Granted this would probably just have made things worse due to shenanigans.
@@TheyCallMeDio no, because if exiled (as far as i know at least) only the front side of cards ever matter, in this case his creature form alongside might and meekstone.
48:26 you tapped out two lands to get the most counters, but you could have activated the calendar with its ability. true dubbling 0 counters doubles to 0, but it would untap and give itself that extra counter on your upkeep.
The Calendar could also be fun with Dismantle 2R Sorcery Destroy target artifact. If that artifact had counters on it, put that many +1/+1 counters or charge counters on an artifact you control.
The other one I've seen is Millennium Calendar with All Will Be One. Since AWBO cares about the amount of counters added, doubling 20 counters (which is easy to get to) insta kills your opponent.
When you have 2 spare mana at the end of a turn cycle, it makes sense to tap your calendar even if it doesn't have any counters on it because that'll be one extra permanent untapping
@@Xorthis I does activate. It’s mana ability is an activated ability. It can craft with the jewel, it’s a creature to be untapped with Teferi. It is even a relevant permanent type for Thousand-Moon Smithy.
@@kylejohnson4662 Ah I see what you mean. Use it to craft and gain the [t] ability. The thing is, nearly all the permanants are relevant for smithy anyway, I do agree in the fringe case you can untap it with Teferi. Only, by the time you can craft the Locus, you already have all the mana you need. What would you remove to run a play set of these in this deck?
Lol come on dude. Everyone always has a suggestion for cards to add to any deck but suggesting a card without examining what you would cut for it is absolutely irrelevant.
The secret with glyphbridge, you need to cast it, then craft it next turn so the opponent never gets to attack because aggro players are allergic to reading cards.
Is there some particular reason this deck isn't playing All Will Be One? Sure, it sort of adds an extra card to the combo in a sense, but it also means you only need to get the Calendar up to your opponents life total worth of counters, which seems worth it?
Ldl European sounding guy did it. I added it to the deck I already had. All be one with the forge that makes creatures and battles. Also has the infinite attack power, tortoise land combo
Lotta times could've gotten another counter on the calendar like 48:34 tapping the calendar may not have doubled any counters, but it would have been another permanent untapping. Lot of small things like that
I hope we get some MTGO/Modern/Budget/Pioneer Against the Odds again soon. So many fun new Cards that make some janky forgotten cards become useful in recent Weeks! Prost & Cheers from the Snow-Covered Bavarian Alps
I feel like that Locus of Enlightenment punt in the first game is totally understandable. In a world where having 2 Virulent Slivers gives all slivers 2 copies of the poisonous 1 ability, it would make sense to me that exiling 2 teferis would have all their abilities be considered separate from one another.
It does count them separately. There is nothing special about the Locus that prevents you from activating multiple loyalty abilities from different exiled cards in the same turn. You just need to find a way around rule 603.3 that says (paraphrased) "you can activate a loyalty ability of a permanent you control any time you could cast a sorcery and as long as no player has already activated a loyalty ability of that permanent already this turn." It's a very easy rule to forget, since the only cards that natively come with loyalty abilities are planeswalkers, so I feel it's a common misconception that the once per turn restriction on loyalty abilities is baked into the rules of the planeswalker card type, when it is actually baked into the rules of loyalty abilities themselves.
The abilities are considered separate, it would have two instances of the effect, but you can only activate one loyalty ability of a permanent per turn. Tbh I don’t understand how anyone with as much experience as him could miss that
Locus of Enlightenment does have 2 instances of each Planeswalker ability. However, there is this very little-known rule, that says a permanent can only use loyalty abilities once per turn. So if you control Oko, Thief of Crowns, you aren't allowed to make a Food token, then immediately turn it into an Elk that same turn.
Or you can run The Millennium Calendar + All Will Be One to just detonate the opponent with damage. You don't need to get to 20 counters even, as each permanent you untap will deal 1 to an opponent once both pieces are out.
Why would someone like your G1 opponent play a deck with no new cards (apart from the creatureland)? I thought the point of the VIP was to test new cards to see which ones were good to help decide how to spend wildcards.
I feel like that game against caves wasnt over, you could have played the land and wrathed. And then you discover the second net which lets you tap down both the creature land and their last creature.
8:50 it matters as long as the counters are still low. Untapping 6 lands when it's at 6 is the same as activating it. It also helps to remember all thresholds 16,32,63,125,250,500. if you're close to one it is very important to try and reach it. There is virtually no difference between 250 or 495 counters while the difference between 499 and 500 counters is a whole turn.
This reminds me of the Proffesor. "Reading the card, explains the card". I'm a lot like Seth, whenever I'm too excited about playing something, I don't tend to read about how to do it correctly xD
I kinda feel like Millennium Calendar would work best with Bant fog, and using Green mana would allow for other combo pieces like Doubling Season or Vorel to be used. I don't play online though so there's probably some huge flaw in my logic.
Field of Ruin is really good for Mana Fixing in two colour decks. You can run a Mana base of 4 Demo Field and 4 FoR and the rest as basics, You eventually just start wastelanding.
Yeah true but I am also curious about the cards that could be added if he chose to do this in like modern or explorer. Stronger cards and more options to make it pop off.@@MFSIMBA
Actually, Millennium Calendar plus All Will Be One is a quicker combo together that might actually be something to look into playing. I saw someone play that during early access day against someone else and they blinked and they were dead lol
So, I think the Locaus of Enlightenment is bugged on Arena. Gatherer says "if two of the same card were exiled to craft Locus of Enlightenment, it will have two instances of each of that card's activated abilities. Each of those abilities may be activated once each turn." So when you exile two tefeiri with it, you should be able to activate the +1 twice. EDIT: nevermind, you can only activate one loyalty ability per permanent, regardless of anything else.
I think that in the game against the goyf-ish creatures and tyvar, you might have considered waiting a turn to play your first glyphbridge and just tapping down souls of the lost with your braided net. That way you would have only taken damage from the somnophage and the prowler and you could have hit more stuff with your second glyphbridge.
Found this deck to be a bit faster . It does help to turn 1 the calendar but with Inventors fair you can tutor for it. But with Forsaken Monument, Paradox Engine, and Mystic Forge you can just have an endless turn tapping and untapping the calendar. Most players resign once the combo comes out. Calendar is a funny meme, but the Enigma Jewel is just completely broken. I built an infinite loop prison deck around it, where I can destroy all non-basic lands, counter every spell and ability, return every permanent to the opponent's hand every turn... And it works ! Soooo much fun !
"When ever you untap any permanents during your UNTAP STEP" I thought I could use Aphetto Mage and Vizier to infinitely untap and tap target Permanent!!! I thought I could do this in my UNTAP Step yet I have just discovered that there is no Priority in the Untap step and all Permanents Untap at the same time! Im so angry to discover this MYTHIC Peace of JUNK is utterly useless in EDH I'm so gutted! Its a waist of a slot! Why couldn't the card just say "When ever you untap a permanent ad a TIME counter im so Angry this has embarrassed me during a game were I thought I could go Infinite! 1000 is just Stupid GG Mark Bathwater thanks heaps.
One important aspect to the math is that any counters you can put on it earlier become more valuable later on, because they count for however many times they get doubled. So one extra counter on turn three could be worth 24 counters on turn six.
Yeah, this is _extremely_ important to shorten the clock. It's also very relevant when you're close to a boundary: a calendar with 55 counters might seem like it would take 5 doublings, but if you untap and get 8 more counters on it, it's just 4 doublings.
I could also see this gameplan in mono-green with doubling season/vorinclex to speed up the clock with minimal impact on any other counters based gameplan you have.
Hey Seth, you need to try out 5cmc or less white superfriends with Chimil. Do it with Chimil in the sideboard not main deck. Utilizing Karn, raven's warning, and Fae of wishes as your means to pull it from sideboard. Basically a simple Bant deck control deck. Boardwipes, ixalan's binding (its more expensive than alteratives but is strictly better than the others) With a sideboard of Liquimetal coating (for karn / Compleated Tamiyo), kaya, the inexorable, Quintorius Kand, Farewell, Chimil, and Ugin. I run: Basri ket, Mila, Wrenn and Realm, Ajani adversary of tyrants, Teyo, Aegis Adept, Ajani, Sleeper agent, Ajani, the greathearted, Tamiyo, Collector of tales, Vivien Reid, Tamiyo, Compleated as my main deck walkers. basic strat is board wipe> board wipe > Board wipe until you can start dropping planeswalkers. With doubling season, you can drop ready to ult walkers. With Kaya in the sideboard and having the means to obtain her in game, your planeswalkers can never be permenantly removed. The vast number of cheap walkers and having grave recursion (Wrenn and realm / Kaya) allows you to win just off the poison counters from Sleeper agent Ajani. (cant pull off ajani? Basri keeps you with chump blockers and Ajani keeps you with life linkers.) My record is 32 emblems in one game. thanks to Enigma.
I was a little unsure of how all the aspects of the Enigma Jewel worked and wanted to see someone else royally F' it up before I embarrassed myself. I'll still embarrass myself, but it won't be quite as bad after watching you.
This was seemingly all the way against the odds and it kinda worked. I think another possible way is Nissa, awaken the woods, doubling season, and a way to untap the calendar. I just think forest giving you double the value plus more forest with the awaken the woods could be enough mana to get a doubling season or two out. Still, hopefully have enough mana to do untap shenanigans.
One thing about recent sets that makes me sad is the lack of animations. I know it's not a super important thing, but consider cards like Mnemonic Betrayal (Probably the best animation), Thousand-Year Storm, and Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge's simple +2, not having anything at all on the calender's win condition feels like such lazy design. It's not an easy condition to achieve and there really should be payoff. Even toxic and mill win conditions get a little flair these days... When I got a Calander, I threw it into a quick sparky game to see what the win animation was. -1000. :/ Iif we didn't care about visual design, we'd all be playing MTGO, since it has a much more complete card library.
Adding counters via proliferate is more valid than you think. When you're dealing with growth, small, early investments become big factors later. A few counters in the single digits can shave an entire turn or even two off later.
ok but, the calendar puts counters on itself when anything you control untaps, so literally just running more permanents that tap is more efficient at putting counters on than proliferate is
8:34 If you double it, yes it is zero, but it would be extra permanents tapped to get more counters on it initially. So if you had played Jewel you would have had an extra tapped permanent
While this is a good build for the card I’ve found it to be best in the agathas soul cauldron deck using kami and the faerie as a form of inevitability that also just wins if you assemble the combo
You can win in 10 turns playing calender on turn one and only having 2 lands, just untapping and activating it. Turn 9 you would have around 800 (my math might be a little off so I'm rounding) playing ANYTHING that untaps speeds this up. But not actually by much. Unless you are somehow spamming permanents that keep you alive, can untap but somehow don't win you the game first I think the fastest you can win is turn 6/7.
Why not sunfall vs glyphbreaker? Also leaves behind a transform token for enigma crafting. Also is just a HARD wrath. Glyphbreaker Seems a little too cutr for this ahainsy the odd
