This is just a thought based on my own experience as a player. Throughout the years of playing hockey, I noticed that there were always one or two guys every year in the team that were ‘wide trackers’. And as you’ve mentioned, I have heard plenty of coaches and others state that they could be better skaters using a different approach. And yet to a man, it was always the case that those same critics would also admit that these wide tracking players seemed to be able to really book it, when they got going. So your definitely right about that. But as for myself, I would not have thought myself a wide tracker, even though by an analysis of my own technique, I’ve naturally grown into using what you call the corkscrew technique, generating power with rotating my hips. I can say that many have said I have a natural aptitude for skating, and perhaps this is what makes it look fluid. I don’t reload my stride completely, as you pointed out neither does McDavid - the natural result of the corkscrew movement. Yet I believe that the difference is that I am 5’10”, with a certain leg to torso length ratio, whereas McDavid is taller and longer legged. All of the so called “wide trackers” I’ve known had this body type. Tall with longer legs to torso length ratio. Because having that type of anatomy pretty much dictates that you will become a wide tracker, as their centre of gravity is so high that their base must be double wide in order to provide stability and agility with transitional movements. They could not possibly remain agile transitionally with a more narrow base. For someone with a longer torso to leg length ratio, who is shorter, like me, however, the corkscrew technique can be employed naturally without a base that would seem to be as wide per height, as that of the taller player - my centre of gravity being much lower. I guess in the end what I’m saying is that I believe wide tracking is a thing more dictated by the skaters particular anatomy and proportions than a conscious choice. Am I wrong?

I signed up for the course and it has made me a lot faster. Both my forward stride and my crossovers have improved tremendously. I've been breaking through defensemen on zone entries and stripping pucks on the back check. I like how Jason breaks down skating techniques empirically rather than by dogma. It's a very different and novel approach to teaching skating than other coaches. Highly recommended!

thanks for the great content. and Wau anchors and soft drag have changed my playing style. a corkscrew is a great tool. it helps this big body to move in a completely different way. ¨ do you have anything to say about skate profiling and sharpening. which is best for downhill skating. e.g. my child is 138cm 35kg and I am 191cm 115kg. greetings from Finland

Thanks Tapio, crazy how these movements can help us move much more efficiently. We cover this extensively in our membership area if your interested as there is an advantage to be had, once you are moving with the proper mechanics.

If we would want to see the last 3 parts in this tutorial, how much would that be and how would we pay?

I’m stuck at home training, and I’m trying to use these but off ice. Can I have my skates on and use a towel and slide on hardwood?

I'm trying to figure out what exactly you mean by Downhill Skating System. I'm an ex skier and snowboarder and wondering if you are implying that the mechanics are similar to downhill skiing.
