What happened when you tried to start the car with the head gasket on backwards?

You probably eventually noticed that the gasket needed to be flipped end over end.

Add a drop of oil on each headbolt, never do it dry you will have torque yield loss, and with oil will never hear "bolt seating" sound. Also you need to torque at 40nm(29.5 ft/lb), then 60nm(44-45 ft/lb), then 90°, then 90°. Your setup is 1000% not torqued properly.
