Didn’t he literally just mention about not taking money from the people and finding ways to support yourself by not selling the deen? And at the end of the video you’re telling people to go to support your Patreon account by paying for lessons. Allahu akbar maybe you should start selling cotton like Abu haneefah

This is a reply to the points raised about Imam Abu Hanifah 1- I am a Salafi since 27 years and I travellied in the early days to learn Arabic and study with the Salafi Scholars. 2- Was Imam Ahmed from the 3rd or 4th Generation? 4th if you check by agreement, and to prove that you see in his Musnad the shortest chains of Hadeeth have 3 men between him and the Prophet SAW 3- Was Imam Abu Hanifah from the 2nd or 3rd or 4th generation? Minimum for the 3rd Generation and possibly the 2nd as it's said he met some Sahaaba RA 4- Thousands of Sahaaba settled in Kufah where Imam Abu Hanifah learnt. Thousands also stayed in Madinah where Imam Maalik learnt. 5- Imam Abu Hanifah was a Muhadith and learnt from the hadeeth scholars in Kufah who had collected Hadeeth already. 6- Imam Abu Hanifah had in his circle 30 scholars to discuss back and forth issues before deciding on an issue and from those were scholars of Hadeeth. 7- If a chain of Hadeeth had 2 or maybe 3 men in the chain and and another had 4 or 5 usually, which is more likely to have slip ups and mistakes? Which is more difficult to make sure about? So Abu Hanifah and Imam Maalik had less chance of error in Hadeeth than Imam Ahmed. 8- If a hadeeth in the time of Abu Hanifah was Saheeh then its possible the same hadeeth become Weak later as one of the extra 2 or 3 men in the chain could make mistakes. 9- Imam Abu Hanifah made Jarh wa Ta'deel.critiquing and praising the men in chains and its well recorded To be continued ....

Reading the whole Quran in one rakah can be done by a sitting hafiz reading Salah, However the same hafiz to become a faqih like imam Abu hanifa is almost impossible except with the permission of Allah sw, So my point is don't look for faults in his biography written by others but look at the might of his intelligence and ilm Allah sw gave imam Abu hanifa

The last part of my answer 18- Usually when a scholar later on wrote a book in Fiqh he might have used a very weak hadeeth, along came scholars later and checked those hadeeth and declared the opinion as weak becuase the hadeeth is very weak, BUT that hadeeth alot of times was never used for the original proof, somethings else was used, either a another Hadeeth or verse or Sahaaba and so on. Look how we messed up! 19- You can't understand a Saheeh Hadeeth sometimes alone, it has other narrations mentioning the background to the hadeeth and then you got the Sahaaba and the angles from the Arabic Language which needs Usoolul Fiqh to undefrstand why and how its a proof and why the other saheeh Hadeeth is not used for this issue and so on. 20- You can not use the Usoolul Fiqh of one Madhab for the Fiqh of another madhab Text as each Madhab had its slightly different angles to approach issues and their approaches go back to the Tabi'aan and Sahaabah, not made up. Many salafis still don't understand this and caused hell breaking up families and masjids and villages all over where they went thinking theyre the saved sect like the Jehavoahs Witnesses. Plus theres 5 main different groups of Salafis, 3 of them fight and warn from each other very harshly and one of them keep splitting up every few years more and more past 30 years. The Day of Judgment its every man for themselves and only the Shafaa'a of the Prophet SAW will give you a chance After the Mercy of Allah. 21- Imam Ahmed and Shaafi'ee both built upon the Fiqh of those who came before them and Imam Shaafi'ee mastered the 4 madhabs of his time by learning with them or their students then critiqued their usool and furoo, Abu Hanifahs, Imam Maaliks, Imam al-Awzaa'iee and Imam Laith ibn Sad. Imam Maaliks madhab today is built upon the Mudawaanah which was built upon Imam Asad bin Furaat who studied with Imam Malik then Imam Muhammed Hasan ash-Shaibaani, student of Imam Abu Hanifah and this is where Imam Asd bin Furaat asked thousdand of questions in extra classes with Imam Muhammed, these thousands of questions got asked to Imam Maaliks students by him later as when he retuned to Imam Maalik he had passed away RH, and thus we can say Imam Abu Hanifah Formed the Foundation of the Fiqh of all 4 Madhabs. This is ONE REASON WHY THEY ATTACK HIM, if they put doubts into the Madhab of Abu Hanifah then all Fiqh collapses!!! And another reason is becasue he destroyed many deviants sects in debates and lastly because he was very pious and would sleep only the first third of the night in winter then pray till Fajr and between Zuhr and Asr in the Summer as the nights were short so he prayed again from Isha till Fajr, as his wife mentioned. The rest of his time from Fajr till Ishaa was teaching in his Masjid which is still there today! RH. He knew how to debate way before was a Rich Entrepreneaur so would clothe his studnets in the best clothes and look after them and he would send money to the schlolars and their students in Badhdad and Basrah whilst he was in Kufah, and studied Fiqh for 20 years from 20 years old till 40 with Imam Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman who learn from learnt from Ibraheem an-Nakha'i. Recently a MA reserch in Jordan showed how in 600 of Abdullah ibn Mas'oods fatwaas, 590 were in line with Abu Hanifahs Fatwas as he inherited his Fiqh. He made Hajj 40 times and met many scholars in Makkah and Madinah everytime and discussed and debated with them and thats why he got well known. 22- Imam ibn Abi Shaibah mentioned in the end of his big book al-Musannaf some 140 issues where he claimed Imam Abu Hanifah went against Hadeeth, this has been rebutted in 3 books, summary being Imam ibn Abi Shaibah was not a specialist in Fiqh like Abu Hanifah by a long way, hois speciality was Hadeeth mainly and these Hadeeth were understood by Imam Abu Hanifah in a different way or he prefered other hadeeth above them or he saw hidden defects/ILAL in those hadeeth which is a high level science as a Muhadith. I hope this helps you my brother and others. It was a revision for me. Past 18 montyhs I have had re-learn a lot and discover tons of misinfortantion in many areas, so we've made a big massive mess and we need to clarify! I wrote this from my head quick as possible and hope it saves a lot of hassle and benefits all of us.

#Article: Did Imam Abu Hanifah رحمه الله follow Rai or Sunnah? Imām Abu Hanīfah said “Beware of speaking about matters of Deen based on Raï (personal opinions) and hold firm to the Sunnah for the one who leaves the Sunnah goes astray” (i) Raï means juristic opinions. Al-Tūfī said, "There are two types of raï: (1) One which is based purely on one's intellect (2) One which involves using the intellect to extract rulings from Quran and Ahādith. And this is what is meant when it is said, “this is the Raï of Imām Abu Hanīfah or this is the Raï of Imām As-Shafei.”(ii) _In essence, Raï signifies Fiqh. Therefore, when it is asserted that Imam Abu Hanifah and his disciples were "Ashāb Al Raï", it does not imply that they disregarded Hadith and relied solely on personal opinions; rather, it signifies their proficiency in jurisprudence. Moreover, being adept in fiqh does not preclude one from also being well-versed in Hadīth. This is because there is no inherent conflict between fiqh and Hadīth, as Hadīth constitutes the recorded teachings of Rasūlullah صلى الله عليه وسلم, while fiqh represents the methodology for interpreting them._ Imām Khattābi said, “Hadīth is like a foundation and Fiqh is like it's edifice. Every edifice devoid of a foundation will collapse and every foundation without an edifice is uninhabited and dilapidated.” (iii) Imām Tirmidhī narrated the Hadīth of Umm ‘Atiyya about the ritual bath of Zaynab رضي الله عنها and explained it by quoting the rulings of the Fuqaha (Experts in Fiqh) and then commented, *“And this is what has been mentioned by the Fuqaha and they are more knowledgeable regarding meaning of the Hadith”* (Tirmidhi no 990) Imām Mālik said, “We only take Ahādith from the Fuqaha"(iv) Ibn Wahb said, “Every Muhaddith who does not follow an Imām in Fiqh is misguided. If I had not studied under Imām Mālik and Abu Layth, I would have been astray too” (v) Al-Khatīb Al-Baghdādi, said “Know that one does not become a Faqīh merely by narrating abundance of Ahādith. One only becomes a Faqīh by extracting the meanings of a Hadith and by pondering over it” (vi) Ibn ‘Abdil Barr says, *“No Imām rejected a Hadīth except that the Hadīth was abrogated according to him, or that there was a defect in the chain of transmission*[...] People have criticized Abu Hanīfah and have labelled him as a Murji’ite[...] People were jealous of him and have levelled various accusations against him and have fabricated stories about him which are unbefitting" (vii) Ibn Taymiyyah says “He who thinks that Abu Hanīfah or other Aimmah have preferred Qiyās over Sahih Ahādith has erred and has spoken out of speculation and desires” (viii) Ibn Qayyim says “Abu Hanīfah preferred weak Ahādith over Qiyās. For e.g, logic demands that laughing in Salāh does not break Wudhu, but there is a weak Hadīth that suggests that laughing in Salāh break both Wudhu and Salāh and Abu Hanīfah adopted that view. So, if he was following Raï, he would have discarded the Hadīth and followed logic instead” (ix) In fact, Imam Abū Hanīfah abhorred using intellect only to derive rulings so much that he said “To urinate in the Musjid is better than some of the Qiyās that people do” (x) May Allah safeguard the reputation of Imām Abū Hanīfah and dispel any misunderstandings about him. Āmīn. Salaam, around 11:12, in Arabic: " تعلوه السمرة" which could be translated as "browness got the better of him". Before that he said he was very handsome... there is no "handsome.. but being dark" in the Arabic nor did the brother say that. Listen to it carefully again bro.

Yes, I agree some of us (Muslims and non-Muslims) have used expressions like "although he is black/dark, he is handsome" (an example from amongst my close relatives) we shouldn't give this much attention. In a place where most people are fair-skinned some would consider darker complexions to be undesirable... but that's their personal choice... nothing wrong with that... 10- Imam al-A'mash was an Imam in Hadeeth and was asked a question in Fiqh and couldn't answer so Abu Hanifah aswered then imam al-A'mash asked how did you get the answer for that? Imam Abu Hanifah replied You narrated to us from so and so from so and so and from the Prophet SAW and then Imam Abu Hanifah conituned bringing chains at which Imam al-A'mash said Enough, enough, you have just summaried a hundred days worth of Hadeeth in an hour! Oh Imams of Fiqh, you are the Doctors and we are the Pharmcists! Hence the books of Fiqh summarise hundreds of verses of the Qur'an, thousands of hadeeth, thousands of narations of the sahabaa and Tabi'een and so forth. 11- One of the students of Imam Abu Hanifah, Abdullah ibn Mubaarak weant to Lebanon and met Imam al-Awzaa'i. Imam al-Awzaa'i said oh you jsut came from that Man of Bidah/Innovator Abu Hanifah? So imam ibn Mubaarak wrote out some of the Fiqh issues of Imam Abu Hanifah with his name only, Nu'man bin Thaabit and next day returned to hand over the book to Imam al-Awzaa'i, he read and read and was very impressed till he said this is truely amazing, imam Ibn Mubaarak said this is the Abu Hanifah actually who called an Innovator! He retracted his statement immediately. 12- There was alot more Ilmul Kalaam in the time of Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal by a long way up until they influenced the leaders to force deviant belifes upon the scholars and thats where Imam Ahmed stood firm! 13- There is 2 types of Ilmul Kalaam, the deviant type of the Mu'tazliah and the correct type of Ahlus-Sunnah, by the end of the time of Imam Abul Hasan al-Ash'ari and Abul Mansoor al-Maatureedi, the Mu'talizah were destroyed and Ilmul Kalaam was cleaned up to its purest form. Thats why by the time Imam al-Ghazaali came he didn't need to deal with them but he insread dealt with the extremists Shiah who took control of Egypt and he destroyed the Philosophers and started rectifying the scholars through his book Ih'yaa Uloom ud-Deen which laid the foundations for the Generation of Salaah ud-Deen al-Ayoobi to Liberate Jerusalem. 14- I know a Japanese brother who graduated from the Islamic University of Madinah and he complained how he can't deal with the Japanese as they are mostly Atheists who use Logic and Philosophy, some brothers advised him to learn Ilmul Kalaam as it teaches how to deal with those types of people but instead the Salafi brothers warned him from doing so and advised him to just stick with showing them the miracles of the Qur'an! Point is, Ilmul Kalam uses tons of Rational arguments to 1-Prove the existence of God, then 2-Prove who God actually is, the correct of God, which is the first thing that separates Islaam from the other Religions then 3-prove the need for revalation and messengers 4-prove the Truthfulness of the Prophet SAW, THEN once the person has accepted and convinced with all that, ONLY then will they be willing to accept the Quran and thats when more rational proofs are mentioned for the vaildity of the Qur'an and it carries on from there all the way whilst also mentioning Verses and Hadeeth for each issue hand in hand. So, today Islam is not growing as fast as it actually could by a long way as this is vastly missing, and one of the major reason why it's common for many Saudis who go study in the west to leave Islam completely and become either Athiests or Christians and other Muslims doing that commonly and call themsleves Ex-Muslims is they have NO FOUNDATION and no Muslims around them with basic Ilmul kalaam!!! And the Salafis need to either get on board or MOVE out the way and CLOSE their mouths from warning against ILMUL KALAAM as thats whats needed now more than ever to save their own kids, brothers, sisters, cousins and friends from becoming EX Muslims as this society in the West is designed to do that. Hence no wonder the Ashari Shaafi'ee Soofis from Hadhramaut in the South West of Yemen went to Indonesia and Malaysia, they were equipped with Rational Arguments to convince the Locals after building Trust and Friendships and become true examples of Justice through Good Morals and Standards in their Business Dealings there, and they had the Fiqh to know the Halal and Haram and know how to Worship, the rulings for dealings and business and they had strong Eemaan by knowing how to purify their hearts always and replace vices with virtues in their hearts and tougues and so forth, which is Pure Tasawwuf and look what happened through that??? The Biggest Population of Muslims are there after all that hardwork! Some Salafis are upset with me for mentioning how Imam ibn Taymiyyah explained the Soofi Book of Imam Abdul-Qaadir al-Jilaani in his Maj'moo al-Fataawa in one of the 2 volumes on Sulook which is another name for Tasawwuf or Ih'saan or Tazkiyyah. Pure Sunni Soofism is different to deviant Soofism which many of the Soofi Imams warned against in every generation as is shown in their works but sadly a lot has been hidden even though its available but tactics have been used to keep us away by cutting us off from its people and to gain followers and status and some bits of power, and outside agendas too to keep us very divided at the worst of times so we can not do anything about Genocides or mass corruption or make advancements and leave our youth to be left vulnerable to become drug dealers, ex muslims, junkies, bimbos, .... 15- Imam Abu Hanifah never fell into Bidah ever, there were lots of narrations accusing him which are very weak or made up or broken in chains and every single one has been refuted from angles in numerous books but they're in Arabic, at least 3 books I have. 16- One of the accusions is so crazy that when it was claimed Abu Hanifah was asked to repent from major KUFR the thickos don't undertstand if you retrun to the actual reports fully it was when he was debating the Khawaarij who make tak'feer as we all know by turning sins into Kufr and Abu hanifah said things in that debate as a way to get them stuck and show how they have major contradictions! So how foolish we are and I used to repeat this stuff before and I feel so bad and I ask Allah to forgive me. 16- Imam Abu Hanifah destroyed the main deviant sects in debates in his time, its well known and that was passed onto his students then to their students then to Abul Mansoor al-Maatureedi. So thats a connection to the Aqeedah of the Salaf, a summary of it and its development. To be continued ....

And I did not muddle with the statements of those who praised him since either their statements are not worth anything in comparison to the great scholars of al-Jarḥ wa ʿl-Taʿdīl or they are extreme fanatics of Abū Ḥanīfah. ولم أعرّج على أقوال المعدّلين إما أن يكونوا ممن لا يعتد بكلامهم مع كبار أئمة الجرح والتعديل، وإما أن يكونوا من الغلاة في أبي حنيفة، Or those statements are from some of the Imāms like Sufyān al-Thawrī and ʿAbd Allah b. al-Mubārak and their likes except that they later retracted any praise they had and later warned of Abū Ḥanīfah and even refuted him. For example, Abū Zakariyyāʾ Yaḥyá b. Maʿīn) was asked regarding Abū Ḥanīfah and he said, “He is too high minded to lie.” فقد سئل عنه فقال: هو أنبل من أن يكذب، Yet Yaḥyá criticised him as will come in his biography with an authentic chain, and he criticised him severely due to his opinions (raʿi) and his grave errors in ḥadīth. وقد جرحه كما سيأتي في ترجمته بالسند الصحيح، فجرحه له من أجل رأيه وتخليطه في الحديث، His only praise was that he considered he did not lie. وتوثيقه من أجل أنه لا يكذب. Then on, the criticism of Abū Ḥanīfah is mufassar (ie: very detailed), as we will see if Allah the Exalted wills. ثم إن الجرح في أبي حنيفة مفسر كما سيأتي إن شاء الله تعالى. And if a scholar gives a detailed criticism with his reasons for criticism then it is not to be overruled by any praise as is well known in the books of al-muṣṭalaḥ (ie: sciences of ḥadīth). والجرح المفسّر الصّادر من عالم بأسباب الجرح لا يعارض به التعديل كما هو معلوم من كتب المصطلح. Sufyan ath-Thawri disparaged Abu Hanifa at the time of his death, think him to be Mubtadi, but later changed his views Hafiz Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr narrates: ‘Abd al-Warith narrated to us: Qasim narrated to us: Ahmad ibn Zuhayr narrated to us: Yahya ibn Ma‘in narrated to us: ‘Ubayd ibn Abi Qurrah narrated to us from Yahya ibn Durays, he said: I was present with Sufyan al-Thawri when a man of great knowledge and piety came to him, and he said: “O Abu ‘Abd Allah! What do you have against Abu Hanifah?” He said: “And what does he have?” He said: I heard him [i.e. Abu Hanifah] say a statement in which there is balance and proof: Indeed I take [legal opinions] from the Book of Allah when I find it. That which I do not find therein, I take from the Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger and the authentic narrations from him which have spread between the hands of trustworthy people from trustworthy people. If I do not find it in the Book of Allah, nor the Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger, I take the opinion of his companions, [adopting the opinion of] whoever [of them] I wish, and I leave the opinion of whoever [of them] I wish. Moreover, I do not leave their opinion for another’s opinion. If the [legal] issue reaches [only] to Ibrahim, al-Sha‘bi, al-Hasan, ‘Ata, Ibn Sirin, Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyab - and he enumerated [other] men - then, [they are] a people who performed ijtihad, so I may perform ijtihad just as they performed ijtihad. Imam Abu Hanifah quoted in al-Intiqa’ Thereupon, Sufyan remained silent for a long period, and then he said some words of which there remained none in the gathering but he wrote them: “We hear harshness in speech and we fear it. We hear softness and we desire it. We do not judge the living; nor do we judge the dead. We accept what we hear. And we entrust what we do not know to its knower, and we put our opinion in doubt in favour of their opinion.” (Al-Intiqa’ fi Fada’il al-A’immati l-Thalathat al-Fuqaha’, pp. 264-5) This sanad is authentic: ‘Abd al-Warith ibn Sufyan al-Qurtubi (d. 395) is thiqah according to al-Dhahabi in Siyar A’lam al-Nubala (Misbah al-Arib 2:297); al-Qasim ibn Asbagh al-Qurtubi (247 - 340) was called “the great hafiz” and “the muhaddith of Cordoba” by al-‘Asqalani and is saduq(Lisan al-Mizan (6:367-8); Ahmad ibn Zuhayr ibn Harb (d. 299) is thiqah according to al-Daraqutni and Khatib; ‘Ubayd ibn Abi Qurrah is a shaykh of Ahmad ibn Hanbal and is thiqah according to Ya‘qub ibn Shaybah and Yahya ibn Ma‘in (Tarikh Baghdad 12:386-9); Yahya ibn al-Durays (d. 203) is a narrator of Muslim, and is thiqah according to Ibn Ma‘in (Tahrir al-Taqrib 4:89).

The Imam Adh-Dhahabi mentioned in his biography of the Imam Dirar ibn Sard said, Yazid ibn Harun was asked, ‘Who is a greater faqih, al-Thawri or Abu Hanifah?’ He replied, ‘Abu Hanifah was a greater faqih and Sufyan was greater in remembering hadith.’ Ibn al-Mubarak said, ‘Abu Hanifah was the greatest faqih among the people.’ Al-Shafi‘i said, ‘People are children to Abu Hanifah in fiqh.’ Yazid said, ‘I never saw anyone more god fearing and more intelligent than Abu Hanifah.’ Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Qasim ibn Mihraz narrated from Yahya ibn Ma‘in who said, ‘There is no issue with him; he was not accused of anything. Yazid ibn ‘Umar ibn Hubayrah imposed on him to take up the judiciary but he refused to be qadi.’ Abu Dawud (may Allah mercy him) said, ‘Imam Abu Hanifah was an imam.’ “Bishr ibn al-Walid narrates from Abu Yusuf who said, ‘I was walking with Abu Hanifah when a man said to another, “This is Abu Hanifah, he does not sleep at night.” Imam Abu Hanifah said, “I swear by Allah, people do not speak of me regarding that which I have not done.” He used to keep awake the night in prayer, du‘a and supplication.’ I (Imam Hafiz al-Dhahabi) say: I have devoted a chapter to the virtues of this imam. He died in Rajab, 150AH. May Allah be pleased with him.” You said Yahya bin main didn’t praise Abu Hanifa apart from saying he is not a liar But Adh-Dhahabi records differently ““Muhammad Sa‘d al-‘Uwfi said, I heard Yahya ibn Ma‘in say, ‘Abu Hanifah was reliable (thiqah), he did not narrate a hadith except that which he remembered and did not narrate that which he did not.’ “Salih ibn Muhammad said, I heard Yahya ibn Ma‘in say, ‘Abu Hanifah was reliable in hadith.’ Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Qasim ibn Mihraz narrated from Ibn Ma‘in, ‘There is nothing wrong with Abu Hanifah.’ And he said once, ‘He is according to us from among the people of truth and was never accused of lying. Ibn Hubayrah imposed on him to take up the judiciary, but he refused to be a qadi…’

This is a mere exaggeration. Don't exaggerate too much about Abu Hanifa...in order to make the deviant Sufis like Barelvi and Deobandi satisfied...He is was clearly the Imam of Analogy, and this is not my view; rather, the scholars like Al-Bukhari and others have explained this matter in their books...read "Tareekh Baghdad", filled with insanely strange-eviews of Abu Hanifa...Which book did Imam Abu Hanifa write?! “Don’t exaggerate” He was a great Imam whose madhab has spread to the corners of the earth. Don’t disrespect him for the flesh of Scholars are poisonously The criticism of al-Bukhari and an-Nasai and others are not valid, as it is well known the contemporaries of an individual have more experience about the individual than those who can after. And since the majority of his contemporaries praises him, it is not valid. Also your argument is not that by praising Abu Hanifa the barelvis and others would be encouraged Shall we dispraise Ash-Shafi and Malik too then? Because many of the Ash’aris follow them?(or claim to)

“Tareekh Baghdad” is also filled with praises of the Imām This is what Shaykh ul-Islam had to say regarding the Great Imām Hafiz Ibn Taymiyya writes: “There is no doubt regarding Imam Abu Hanifa’s knowledge. People later attributed many lies to Imam Abu Hanifa, which were all untrue. The aim of such writings was to taint Imam Abu Hanifa” [Ibn Taymiyya, Minhaj as-Sunna An-Nabawiyya, vol.1, page 259]

I will address al-Bukharis criticism of him to dismantle your doubts about him. al-Bukhari has stated: “Imam Abu Hanifa was a Murji’i” [Al-Ta’rikh al-Kabir, under the ‘Biography of Numan ibn Thabit’] Imam al-Bukhari also writes: “When Sufyan ath-Thawri [a great scholar of Islam] heard news about the death of Imam Abu Hanifa, he said: ‘Praise beto Allah that such a man had died as he was gradually destroying Islam. There could not be a worse person born in Islam’ “ [Ta’rikh Saghir, Biography of Imam Abu Hanifa] Imam al-Bukhari also writes: “On two occasions Imam Abu Hanifa was ordered to repent from making blasphemous statements” [al-Bukhari, Kitab ad-Daufa Walmat Rukin; Ibn ‘Abdi’l-Barr, Al-Intiqa] Imam al-Bukhari informs us that he had taken these statements from his tutor Na’im ibn Hamad [Ta’rikh as-Saghir] Imam al-Bukhari was so convinced by his tutor, that he never mentioned or used Imam Abu Hanifa as a reference for his book Sahih al-Bukhari, although whenever he did mention Imam Abu Hanifa he referred to him as ‘Kufi’ (nicknamed from his homeland - Kufa). Before we proceed any further, it is important to refer to one particular accusation against Imam Abu Hanifa - the accusation that he belonged to a deviant sect called the Murji’ites. To answer this, we first need to see what character Imam Abu Hanifa possessed. It is important in responding to this accusation to find out who gave Imam al-Bukhari information regarding Imam Abu Hanifa. Insha’llah, we will demonstrate that he was not a Murji’i and pinpoint from where this false accusation came from. I have mentioned that Na’im ibn Hammad conveyed this information to Imam al-Bukhari but before proceeding any further, let us take note of what Hafiz adh-Dhahabi, Hafiz al-‘Asqalani and Katib al-Baghdadi have written in connection to Na’im ibn Hammad: ” Na’im ibn Hammad was a famous scholar from a region called Marau. He had sight in one eye only. During the later part of his life he went to live in Egypt. At first, he belonged to a sect called the Jahmites, and was an active member. He then later left this sect and wrote a book, which was the first book to use the science of Musnad. These were a compilation of narrations by the Sahaba, which were placed in an alphabetical order, according to whom they had narrated the hadith. During this particular period, the Umma used to question whether the Holy Qur’an was makhluq (created). When this question was put forward to Na’im ibn Hammad he did not give an explanation. He was then sent to prison along side Yaqub Faqia. He died in 228 AH. It was noted that no janaza [funeral prayer] was prayed over him and he was buried without a kaffan [shroud]” [al-Baghdadi, Tadhkirat al-Huffaz; adh-Dhahabi, Tahzib al-Tahzib; al-‘Asqalani and al-Baghdadi, Biography of Na’im ibn Hammad] This is a brief overview of his life and now we shall examine as to what status he held as a scholar. We shall do this by looking at what Hafiz adh-Dhahabi and Hafiz al-‘Asqalani have written, since they compiled together all the works by previous scholars who had written concerning Na’im ibn Hammad. What follows are their accounts: Imam Abu Dawud said: “Na’im ibn Hammad had attributed twenty ahadith to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) which he in fact had never said, thus being fabricated sayings. Here are two examples of such fabrications: 1) Abu Hurayra reported that: “The Prophet of Islam (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) had said:’A time will come, when if you adhere to ten percent of Allah’s commands you will succeed, and if you leave this ten percent you will die [spiritually, not physically].” The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) had never uttered such words - this is a munkar narration (narrated by a weak reporter that goes against another authentic hadith). 2) Abu Hurayra narrates: “The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) had said: ‘A time will come when my Umma will be split into more than 70 sects. The worst will be those who indulge in qiyas [analogical deduction] in matters of uncertainty’.” Abu Zur’a said: “I asked Imam Yayha ibn Mu’in, ‘Where did Na’im ibn Hammad get this hadith?’He answered that it has no origins and that this is not a hadith but has been invented.”Whatever Na’im ibn Hammad had said about Imam Abu Hanifa were all lies and had no substance.Abu Zur’a said that whenever Nu’aym ibn Hammad would narrate a hadith of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), he would add in his own words in the hadith. Whenever he would narrate a fabricated hadith he would attribute it to the “great Imam of Hadith.” Daraqutni said that whenever Nu’aym used to mention a fabricated hadith, he would do so to support the Sunna. He had a lot of munkar narrations, which other Imams did not have [adh-Dhahabi, Mizan al-I’tidal and Tahzib al-Tahzib; al-‘Asqalani, Biography of Nu’aym ibn Hammad] Imam al-Bukhari took his narrations from Nu’aym ibn Hammad for his book, Sahih al-Bukhari andTa’rikh.Since Nu’aym ibn Hammad received criticism from amongst the Muhaddithin likewise, Imam al-Bukhari also received criticism for his book of Hadith from the scholars of Hadith. This overview concerning the character of Nu’aym ibn Hammad will allow us to understand that he was not a reliable Hadith expert in the eyes of the Scholars of Hadith. Now we shall elaborate upon the statements made by Imam al-Bukhari about Imam Abu Hanifa by noting what the scholars of Hadith had to say concerning him. From this we can demonstrate that Imam al-Bukhari’s Ta’rikh is in no way free from error, nor did it remain uncriticised from Hadith scholars. As a result, it would be unfair to “blindly” accept everything that has been written in it as the absolute Truth. By now, it should have been made obvious that the person that gave Imam Bukhari information regarding Imam Abu Hanifa (i.e. Nu’aym ibn Hammad) was unreliable. The Muhaddithin tell us that he used to make up fabricated hadith of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and he also made false stories about Imam Abu Hanifa. As we are told not to believe in his narrations, similarly, we should not accept those statements regarding Imam Abu Hanifa, since they are all lies, according to Hafiz adh-Dhahabi and Hafiz al-‘Asqalni. Anyone who has read the the history of Islamic scholarship accepts and understands that criticisms were not only made against Imam Abu Hanifa but were also made against many of the Muhaddithin. The simple principle is that when accusations are made against any of the great scholars of Islam, who have the respect from the majority of the Umma, those accusations are rejected. We shall provide you with some examples:

Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalani stated: “Imam al-Bukhari was accused of saying that the Qur’an was makhluq (created) but in reality he was saying the words that we are reciting are makhluq (created). In one meeting a question was posed to Imam al-Bukhari, as to whether the Qur’an is makhluq or not?He replied, ‘Whatever we do is our doing, and our doing is makhluq.’When the ‘ulema heard about this everyone ceased to communicate to him, except for Imam Muslim and Ahmad Salma. However, Imam Muslim stopped taking any narrations from Imam al-Bukhari. Imam Muhammad ibn Yahya (who was the teacher of both Imam Muslim and Imam al-Bukhari) was also against Imam al-Bukhari on this issue. He then wrote many letters to various scholars informing them about Imam Bukhari’s belief of the Qur’an.The result of this was that wherever Imam al-Bukhari travelled the people would always harass him.Imam al-Bukhari prayed to Allah that He would take his soul into the next life.As a result from the fear of the scholars, Imam al-Bukhari never clarified his stance to the scholars of Khurasan as to whether the Qur’an was makhluq or not” [al-‘Asqalani, Tahzib al-Tahzib] From this incident, you can see that Imam al-Bukhari implied onething, but what people understood it to be was something else. It went so far that Imam al-Bukhari made du’a for himself,”O Allah, take me away from this world” - and Allah accepted his du’a and he passed away. Both Hafiz al-‘Asqalani and Hafiz Ibn Kathir have mentioned this in their books. The same happened to Imam Abu Hanifa: he used to say one thing and the Khawarij and Mutazilites interpreted it as a completely different thing. Another accusation is reported by Hafiz al-‘Asqalani, who writes: “Imam al-Bukhari also had another teacher whose name was Ibn al-Madini.Imam al-Bukhari used to attend his classes [Kitab al-Ilal] from which Ibn al-Madini used to teach from a book. This book was very precious to him and he would not allow anyone to come near it.One day Ibn al-Madini went to visit some of his property and Imam al-Bukhari saw this as an opportunity to obtain the book.He went to Ibn al-Madini’s son and persuaded him with some money to part with the book for a short while.Once Imam al-Bukhari received the book he took it to be copied hastily. By the time Ibn al-Madini had returned, Imam al-Bukhari had returned the book. When classes resumed and Ibn al-Madini began to read from the book, he asked a question to his students. Before he finished the question, Imam al-Bukhari had already produced the correct answer [which was from his book]. Ibn al- Madini then realized that Imam al-Bukhari had seen the contents of his book. The shock of this behavior from Imam al-Bukhari sent Ibn al-Madini into a state of illness, from which he later died.” After writing this account Hafiz Ibn Al al-‘Asqalani said that he did not believe it and then he gave the reason. He said that this was against the status of Imam al-Bukhari [al-‘Asqalani, Tahzib al-Tahzib, under “Life History of Imam al-Bukhari”] What now? Shall we disparage al-Bukhari because some misguided people misunderstand him? Of course not! Let’s be consistent here

Tarikh Baghdad 15:471 Dr. Bashshar ‘Awwad Ma‘ruf comments, “The isnad of this report is sahih, and its narrators are trustworthy.” Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi narrates: Al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali ibn Muhammad al-Mu’addal reported to us: ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan al-Razi narrated to us: Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Za’farani narrated to us: Ahmad ibn Zuhayr narrated to us: Al-Walid ibn Shuja’ narrated to us: ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Shaqiq narrated to us: ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak would say: When [the opinions] of these two, meaning al-Thawri and Abu Hanifah, converge on something, that is strong. Tarikh Baghdad 15:470 Dr. Bashshar ‘Awwad Ma‘ruf comments, “Its isnad is sahih, and its narrators are trustworthy.” Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi narrates: ‘Abd al-Baqi ibn ‘Abd al-Karim al-Mu’addib informed me: ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Umar al-Khallal reported to us: Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Ya‘qub ibn Shaybah narrated to us: my grandfather narrated to us: Ya‘qub ibn Ahmad narrated to me: I heard al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali say: I heard Yazid ibn Harun when a man asked him, “O Abu Khalid! Who is the best in fiqh from those you have seen?” say, “Abu Hanifah.” Al-Hasan said: I asked Abu ‘Asim al-Nabil, “Is Abu Hanifah a better faqih or Sufyan (al-Thawri)?” He said, “The slave of Abu Hanifah is a better faqih than Sufyan!” Tarikh Baghdad 15:468 Dr. Bashshar ‘Awwad Ma‘ruf comments, “Its isnad ishasan.” Needless to say, Abu ‘Asim al-Nabil’s statement is not to be taken literally, but exaggarates the excellence in fiqh of Abu Hanifah over even Sufyan al-Thawri.
