I understand what you are saying. However, I'm a former female CDL driver of 15 years. 5 years being a School Bus Driver. It's always easier said than done. We can always do drills or watch videos on what would best until that moment happens. I send my condolences to the family of the young student and my support to a fellow Bus Driver. This is the biggest fear for majority of Bus Drivers: a student fatality with one of us behind the wheel.

@@whatistruth1155 No, I believe the comment was to minimize the impact as much as possible, and that trying to avoid altogether could result in a worse outcome than a minor collision. Nobody has advocated colliding head on. It can be easy to lose control of a large vehicle like that by suddenly and abruptly swerving to avoid an impact. A driver often has only a split second to make a decision in these cases. What would YOU have done, had you been in that situation?

If you’re trying to avoid an accident. It is best to break than it is to swerve to avoid the accident

Seat belts are not installed on "Regular Ed" buses for a reason. "Regular Ed" buses rarely have Bus Aides and seat belts. Only Special Ed buses do. Special Ed routes have only a few students aboard. "Regular Ed" routes have lots of students. Some over 50+ students. Scenario: a Truck bumps into your "Regular Ed" Bus, pushing and flipping you onto some train tracks. All of your 50+ students are "Regular Ed" and 5-7 years old. Good luck trying to help unbuckle them, as a train approaches. This is one of the reasons why many buses don't require seat belts. They are preparing for a quick evacuation. I'm a former School Bus Driver.

The #1 issue for me in being a school bus driver for the past 5 years is kids not staying safely in their seats. Our reg ed buses do not have seat belts. The special ed buses do.

This accident wasn't caused by unruly children not remaining seated. You're throwing bologna at the ceiling and hoping it sticks.

I understand what you are saying but safety belts on school busses do not make it safer for the students. There is no way the driver can regulate that the kids put the safety belts on correctly. And in a case of emergency the driver will not be able to evacuate the bus quickly if they are unhooking safety belts. This is why there is such thick paddings for the seat backs and seat cushions. My heart hurts for the family that lost their loved one. Praying that they they can somehow find peace and comfort through God, family and friends.

Chances are some students _will_ wear the seatbelts, especially if their parents have trained them to in their family car.

@@pamhutson475 The bus seat is the seat belt. It is designed to be safe in a collision. It is high, angled and cushioned. Anyone who is thrown forward in a collision will be thrown a short distance into the cushioned seat in front of them. Now, consider a collision with fifty kids seat belted into their seats. There is fire and smoke and the driver is unconscious. In all the panic and chaos, you have fifty kids trapped in their seat belts. It would be a disaster.

@@donmcc6573It sure is interesting that the situation you described in order to defend the lack of seatbelts isn't even what happened here. Not only that, calling a bus seat a seat belt is so inaccurate it's amusing. The bus wasn't equipped with them and one of the students was launched completely out of it. Did the oh-so-great seats prevent that? No, because that's not their function, it's the seatbelt's, or would've been if there were any. Children can't be taught how to unbuckle a seatbelt? My goodness it's as simple as pressing a release button and takes all of two seconds. In a crash, those that can unbuckle themselves could then go around and unbuckle others who couldn't. You're making it seem like seatbelts are psych ward straightjackets that are inescapable. Multiple children in a burning bus is a recipe for a disaster, sure, but you made no mention of the child who lost his/her life in this rollover, so one deceased individual must be no big deal to you right?
