This was a good video for me because I have a bad habit of moving back a step or two letting it bounce and then trying to hit it. Often missing it, or if I hit it I pop it up which then sets it up for a smash back.

I was watching a video yesterday of Kyle Yates playing with his sister Sarah, and the announcer said the reason Sarah didn't return the dink is because she was still transferring her wait backwards, and that you should be trying to transfer your weight forwards. I never heard of this, but makes sense.

Hi I am a beginner and in watching your video your paddle is entering the non volley zone during a volley? I understood in reading the rules that "nothing" may enter the non volley zone including the swing/arc of the paddle? Which is correct? Thank you
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 6 лет назад
Hi Richard, you cannot be in the non volley zone while hitting a volley; being "over" the non volley zone is OK, because you are not in it.
@jeffross9620
@jeffross9620 6 лет назад
The paddle is in the air and as long as it does not touch the non volley zone/NVZ (ground), it is good. Nothing can "touch" inside the non volley zone if the player contacts the ball in the air (a volley). If the ball bounces, the player can go into the NVZ to get it on a bounce. It is best that after that, the player then gets back on the other side of the NVZ line. jbrish.com/pickleball/

Interesting, I would always play half volleys when I played tennis. You had to dink them back short or else they other guy charging would pound you. In Pickleball they can't, they have to stay out of the kitchen. I guess I'm trying to say that playing these balls on the bounce should be ok as long as you can dink them back, no?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 6 лет назад
As long as your dinks are short, that's fine. Although I do think it's easier to hit a dink out of the air than hitting a half volley dink.
@traey1775
@traey1775 6 лет назад
When I volley dink, I find that if I hold the paddle still and if I hit the sweet spot, the ball will make it over 9 times out of 10. But when I see 5.0+ players do it on these tutorials, the paddles move slightly. Is it because you are putting slight backspin on it or are you giving it some push to make sure it makes it over?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 6 лет назад
I do "push" it a little. You always want to make sure you give margin for error on all your dinks. Another factor could be the pace in which the ball you are hitting. If the ball you are going to hit has more pace, you aren't going to need much effort or push to get it over.
@traey1775
@traey1775 6 лет назад
Thanks for the clarification. I have seen recreational level players put backspin on their dinks. Is that a bad idea?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 6 лет назад
Putting backspin is a natural shot for some players. I like to slice the ball when I dink cross court on the backhand side. As long as you are consistently hitting unattackable dinks, it really doesn't matter how you hit them
@mca10spro
@mca10spro 5 лет назад
I think what you are seeing is the player absorbing the pace on the incoming ball and yes, there is some natural backspin on the ball off of a dink volley and half-volley. This is such a situational question or shot by shot situation. Every ball is a little bit different. Jordan is creating space between him and the ball to create leverage against the resistance of the incoming ball. So, it depends on how your reviving the ball, and many factors like depth, direction, spin, and speed of the ball. See Jordan is generalizing out in front for a variety of incoming shots. Use spin for control and less spin to be more aggressive. It’s a give and take. You usually want the best bang for the buck. Or in this case the best dink for the buck.

I like it but if they dink that high and far back Id probably just hit a fast low shot right at them or far away from them
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 6 лет назад
You probably can’t attack that low of a ball at a consistent rate. Where I have the cones set up, is still inside kitchen.
@davidkendall6801

Can you drop a dink barely over the net to force your opponent into the kitchen?
