Thank you for visually defining this back area. You were very clear in selling the value of avoiding doing a shot in this area. Though pros can drop from anywhere and in any way possible (tweeners), the majority of us regular humans need the best possible scenario to handle shots at us and positioning is key!
@BrionesPickleball

Yes! Even the pros try to avoid getting stuck that far back though. We’ll talk about why and how they do this in future videos.

Thanks for the vid. I'm a newer player and the people at the local YMCA pickleball club kinda get on me cause I don't crash the net like they do. I tell them it's not necessary to do that and of course I see them miss shots at the feet in transition all the time. They just say ohh I wasn't fast enough that's all. This video will help me prove my side. Thanks again.

Thanks so much! I find that I often step into the Red Zone as part of my transition up the NVZ. Will definitely be more aware. One problem I find is that the old school of thought "just get up to the NVZ" as fast you can is problematic if my partner zips in really fast after my third shot (which may not be the best) and he/she gets drilled or is out of position to give a decent return. Your thoughts on this. Thanks again!

I understand the “redundancy” comment also but consider the vast number of 3.0 and below players who need that to soak in and that group has to be a large part of Jordan’s audience.

Great video, one question, as I am moving thru the transition zone toward the kitchen, at what point should I stop in order to be ready for the ball potentially being returned to me? I find that I often am hitting balls on the run and the results of doing so aren't always good. Should I stop at the moment my opponent makes contact with the ball? Before? Thanks for all of the great content.
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball 2 года назад
Great question. For a short answer, if you’re getting caught in transition moving up, you just need to split step way sooner. Try stopping as your opponent starts their swing on their 4th shot.

Hi Jordan, Thanks for this great tutorial. I will implement it in my game. In regards to staying at the baseline if the drop is too high or deep, what's the footwork and shot selection if the opponent hits to the side lines or a drop/block? Do you have any tutorial on: 1) how to return a low ball (bounces very low)? Should I drop or slice 2) how to return a short ball? Usually when my opponents mishit it to the NVZ and I am at the baseline

Are you also trying to get to transition zone if you/your partner drive the 3rd/5th etc or are you waiting for a drop to move? Obviously harder to do but wondering if you stay back if your partner drives..
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball 2 года назад
I will watch my partner as they hit, if I see him swinging big, I can do one of two things: crash the net to put pressure on the net team, or stay back with them and get ready for the next ball. Lots of this decision making has to do with the quality of my partner’s drives.

Another fine job. While the video emphasized the movement of the engaged player, quite a number of times opponents hit away from me so I have free access to the NVZ. Would I be better off to be tight up to the NVZ or stay back a step or two until my partner works their way up through the transition zone? A good deep return can push my partner back and leave a sizable gap for opponents to target.
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball 2 года назад
Great question Randy. I will do a video on this soon. Although for now, when you come up to the NVZ, you typically don’t want a huge gap in between you and your partner, but I do advise to be slightly ahead of your partner if you can. Lastly, if your partner is hitting really high 3rd balls and you’re getting the ball smashed at you in the transition zone, then you should probably stay back more.

I have been playing pickleball for 3 months. I played 8 games today and used some of what I learned from your pickleball videos. One thing that I realized today is that there is something that you can not teach. Confidence! You need a degree of confidence in your ability to play to play well. My confidence goes up or down depending on the ability of my opponent. What is your opinion of this topic. This is the video that talked about in my last comment is, Don’t Trash Talk Jordan Briones | 4.5+ Pickleball Doubles Highlights March 15 2022. Check it out. You looked good.

Any videos on where I should hit a 3rd shot drop? Middle? Cross court etc I’m new at this but you say don’t get stuck in the red zone because the 5th is a hard shot from there but it’s easier in the red zone then behind the baseline yeah?
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball 2 года назад
That’s a loaded question, although if you’re just starting out, I’d recommend hitting cross court or towards the middle of the court. Just like I say in the video, it’s about good positioning. If the 3rd shot is high or very attackable, then stay back behind the baseline until you can get into better position or through that red zone.
@dalevoigt8612
@dalevoigt8612 2 года назад
Hitting that ball that is going to hit your shoe is perhaps the hardest ball in pickleball to return. if you are behind the baseline a bit, your opponent cannot hit that spot without hitting the ball out.
@SDPBALLCOACH

Jordan, This is really good stuff! Thing is, it's equally dependent on your playing partner..Communication is HUGE if thi is going to work effectively. This will hardly ever work for casual rec- play because you need your partner to know how n when the two of you are going to move forward. I REALLY enjoyed this one. Kev-
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball 2 года назад
Thanks Kev. When I play with someone I’ve never played with, I still approach the net the same way. The goal is to put myself in the best position possible-no matter what my partner does. Although depending on what shot they hit, I will have to adjust my positioning from there.

As mentioned at 9:37, what is considered a "fairly good" third shot?
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball 2 года назад
Good question. A ball that forces the opponent to hit up is usually a good indicator that it’s a pretty good shot. Regardless, different people at different skill levels will be able to neutralize and handle different balls on their 5th shot. After the 3rd shot, stay back OR try to get in the best position possible (which is preferably past and through that red zone area) when hitting your 5th shot.
@dalevoigt8612
@dalevoigt8612 2 года назад
Trajectory recognition is the most important skill in pickleball. If you are still working on it, reading the paddle face of how your opponent is going to take the ball, can help you make the decision to move forward. If they are reaching down to lift up on the ball in front of them it is a green light.

I play with a group of 4.0 to 4.5 players. Some of them are very good at placing short drops off higher 3rd shot drops. Staying back would mean losing that point. How would you handle this situation?
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball 2 года назад
That’s really tough. Firstly, on a high 3rd shot, your opponent is going to hit an offensive shot regardless, whether it’s a deep swinging volley at your feet, or it’s a short drop that causes you to run up. So that being said, work on your drops. Also, I would try a drive drop combo and drop on the 5th. It’s typically much harder for them to drop off a good drive. I still would recommend getting into good position on your 5th shot either way, and trying not to get stuck that far back near the baseline.
