1 Exercise Practice to Improve Your Walking and Posture. This series of exercises or movements, based on basic kickboxing techniques, will help you improve your walking technique and your posture. Kickboxing drills use perfect positioning to project energy from your core, both with your legs and your arms. You can develop a much better understanding of how your core projects energy by using these techniques, which I will tie to normal walking techniques. Strengthen your glutes and hip flexors and improve your mobility. You will be able to activate your lower abs as well as your hip muscles. Build better coordination between your core and your hips.

Your videos have helped me graduate from trying to exercise my way out of pain to becoming functional. It helps that I don't have to go down to the floor. I can do them while I boil water or wait for the cats to finish their meals...etc. A lot of exercises make you stiff so that you can't actually use your core. Stuart McGill gets you to stiffen your spine and then go out walking. That is unworkable for me and hopeless. I kept wishing somebody would TEACH me how to walk and voila - the Walking Code.

Changing your movement patterns will always take commitment. This is really not that difficult with a little practice. The exercises are presented in order of progressive difficulty.

I don’t know if you talked about this in the video if you did, I missed it. How far apart should our feet be as a rule of thumb while we’re walking. hip with ,shoulder with ,closer than hip with, etc. ? Thank you for the videos
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 2 месяца назад
I have mentioned this in some other videos. The feet should be just as far apart as if you were standing with your feet together.

@@ToddMartinMD I have definitely been walking more wide with my feet and it’s jacked up my hamstrings and hip tightness over the last two years I think it is because of a couple injuries to my left big toe and right knee. Both are being operated on before the end of summer, but I can really tell my balance and everything has been jacked up for the last 2 years. I just walked how you advised and it felt so much better. Somehow, I got way out of whack. Thanks for the help. Have you heard of the Weck method? What are your thoughts on that if you know anything about it? Thanks again. Good luck
@ToddMartinMD

@superhonky6290 My pleasure. I have heard of the Weck method. The head over feet principle doesn’t make sense for walking. It seems like he is incorrectly applying midfoot strike running principles to walking. This doesn’t make sense because of feet are in contact with the ground at the same time when walking, and the spine should be evenly distributed between the two feet at the point of impact so the weight can be shifted on a controlled manner.

Doctor, I love the work you're doing. Due to a spinal disc bulge, I do not have ankle jerk reflex in my right foot, resulting in a limp Since my good foot raises my body up an inch or so on that side.While my non-reflexing foot stay's flat throughout the walking process. I've been looking at your videos and the James Bond rooftop walking scene as a way to equalize my gait. Could I be on to something here and is there a video or technique of yours that you could recommend for walking with impaired or absent ankle jerk reflex?
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 2 месяца назад
Thanks for the question. Do you have full plantar flexion strength and it is just the reflex? If so, the timing of the plantar flexion reflex would be at the end of the swing phase, before you bring the swing foot down. The ankle plantar flexion brings the body forward and brings the forward heel down.If you right foot doesn’t do that reflexively then you could do it consciously. I think I explain the sequence in the Bond video, It is in the String part of the Turn-Tuck Lift sequence I describe in multiple videos.

Doctor thanks for your reply. We're on the same page in that I was hoping to be able to consciously do the plantar flexion. I have conscious function and can do dozens of straight-leg toe extensions against a band but have no ability to do so to raise my bodyweight when standing or walking. Does this impact your advice?
@ToddMartinMD

@TheChannel151 If you are unable to stand on your tip toes, that indicates some significant weakness rather than just a reflex issue. I would still try what I recommended. If your plantar flexion is not strong enough to assist lifting your body forward, it may just not work that well. But it doesn’t hurt to try.
