Hi everyone! I have been raised in Naarm (Melbourne) my whole life and I have been really interested in the massive tram system. So I have made an animated map of the tram system history and expansion over the course of 125 years, from 1884 to 2009.
The animated map took about 8 months to make and render, it is my first huge scale animated map. If you want me to make changes, it will take a while.
If there is anything wrong with the map or if I missed anything, I will be interested to hear your thoughts.
Most of the narration might sound inconsistent, but I think that usually common in youtube videos.

As someone who has never been to Australia let alone Melbourne, I was expecting a much sadder tale, so this was a pleasant surprise.

Both major Australian cities used to have extensive tram networks in the 1930s, but both of them were torn down in the 1960s and are now museums. Not Melbourne though and there are other tramways which are relatively new, including the light rail to Glenelg in Adelaide, Sydney is building trams in downtown and Parramatta and the Gold Coast also has a tram.

Shame how much development of tram and trains slowed after world war II. It would have been so much better if they both expanded as the city expanded and covered the whole city.

Cries in every other Australian city But still, there would be a little less need for expanding the trams by length that much if after WW2 we also didn't ban brownfield housing to create sprawl

TIL that there *were* trams in Seddon but they got canned. I've been saying for 25 years that Seddon and the western parts of Yarraville need to be on the tram network!

Yes, even though I live in the East, I think West Melbourne deserves as much trams as East Melbourne has. The Footscray, Newport and Sunshine areas could really benefit from it.

Wow. This is fantastic. Almost every other city in the western world tore up their trams after WWII. I was waiting for the inevitable gutting to start - and while there were few significant expansions in the ensuing decades, there were only some cuts in the fringes of the tram network. It’s amazing. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, which is known for being an outlier in having kept its trams. That said, over half our tram length was destroyed after WWII and converted to buses. Same story in the other few cities that kept their trams in North America: Boston & Philadelphia. That’s it.

Funny i remember tram exstenyions being mentioned for the north coburg / sydney road line for ages, im 30 but i believethe plans where alot older than that from what iv heard lol. It was said to be exteneded into fawkner and stop at cambelfield plaza . You can tell that it was made for it to, when you reach fawkner there are four lanes on each side with a large nature string for the trams in the center , it has the same design as mt alexsander road in essondon and st georges rd except with out the trams . I had a thought that because the tech school / tafe closed in fawkner there was less of a reason to build it

For someone who has been raised in this city their whole life you seem to pronounce some of the suburub names even worse than a foreigner would. Even etihad stadium was somehow pronounced wrong (ethia). It doesnt help that the spelling was off too. I dont mean to be too critical, it was a well made video but i just couldn't look past these errors

Very Informative video and excellent graphics, well researched, but multiple incorrect pronunciations detract a little. Several have been pointed out by other viewers below, e.g. “Bow-morris”, but may I add the following: Boroondara is not pronounced Boo-ROON-dara, but “Boorin-dara”; The verb “winding” is not pronounced WIND-ing, but “why’n-ding”; Rosamond is not pronunced ROW-za-mond, but “Rozza-mnd”, emphasis on the first syllable; Maribyrnong is not pronounced MARY-ber-nong (or MARIE-bern’g,) but “Marra-bernong”. Otherwise great content.

Great video, been wondering about the development of the tramways for ages. Must've taken a ton of work to produce. Surprised that there hasn't been a single tram extension in the past 15 years, I guess the government is focusing on heavy rail at the moment (funnily enough right at the time when most of the rest of the world is going crazy for light rail).

I remembered taking the tram to Bundoora RMIT. The mornings were worst as the tram stops at EVERY stop. But Melbourne could REALLY use a new expanded Tram network to connect more of the Outer Suburbs. Would have made Melbourne less Car Centric too

He also forgot the St Kilda via Sth Melbourne tram originally ran for part of its route along Beaconsfield Parade and not all the way along Park St to Fitzroy St. The route was changed in the 1950’s/60’s. And as you say the VR tram down Broadway in to Elwood etc is missing.

Informative but the spelling and pronunciation were appalling. It would serve you well to ensure that your spelling was correct (for example you spelt Beaumaris incorrectly with two different incorrect spellings, and your attempt to pronounce the suburb was laughable)! There are many other examples of incorrect spelling or pronunciation scattered throughout the video.
