Kathy Bates all the way. Doesn’t matter who was offered or turned down the role nobody could’ve played it better. Kathy has been well deserving of other Oscars in many movies as well. What a force she is in any role she plays!
It's a shame that they didn't nominate Kathy Bates for Dolores Claiborne. She was terrific in that film. In my opinion, it was an even better performance than Misery, in which she was amazing.
Thank you. 1. Katherine Hepburn did show up at the Oscars in 1974 to present a special award to the producer of her films with Spencer Tracy. Movies like Adam's Rib and others like Cat On a Hot Tin Roof. 2. Kathy Bates and Jody Foster are first and second for Horror? Do you consider The Room or Black Swan as Horror?
Thank you for ending with the great Kathy Bates. Still is the most unusual and unexpected Oscar win, especially for best actress. Perhaps this is one time that a character actress knew best how to bring off a leading actress performance.
Marie Dressler was a gifted performer. It seemed like she could convey any emotion she wanted to with such ease. She had a wonderfully expressive face. She commanded attention.
I wish Glenn Close had a film in 1994. She would have gotten an Oscar that year cause she is great in everything. It was slim pickings that year and Jessica Lange has been better before. But my favourite hands down is the marvellous and scary Kathy Bates
It's hard to compare older roles to the "modern" roles knowing that there would've been so much censorship and rewrites in prior scripts. On another note, image reading a script and it read" He didn't get out of the cockadootie car" and " you dirty bird" and say this is the role for me. Better yet make it one of the iconic movie roles of all time.
Best actress ever: Theron Actor: DDL for There Will Be Blood Supp Actress: Williams Manchester By the...wait Davis stole that for her leading, ummm, supporting role, so Dench Shakespeare Supp Actor: Bardem No Country.
In another dimension, Bette won for 'Of Human Bondage' instead of Claudette Colbert, then later on Claudette didn't hurt her back, played Margo in 'All About Eve,' and won Best Actress.
Theron and Bates so deserved the awards...although I think Bates was far better in Dolores Claiborne...While I like Foster in Accused, I don't remember it being a good film and her hair and "accent" were not convincing but she was still good..Midler in Misery would have been a hoot...We need to give Bette an Oscar for something....Right? The Rose...dang..she was robbed.
@@oscarman42 She will but I hope she gets it for something...While I was glad they gave Gena an honorary, it was criminal she didn't get one for Woman Under the Influence..(although, in my perfect world, she should have gotten it for Gloria, one of my favorite Gena roles...)
Every acting performance here are well deserved of the Oscar. I'm intrigued more by an actor who can deliver a handicap, disability, mental illness or a character so different from what they really are or who they are. If they can act showcasing these extraordinary disciplines, Im satisfied and grateful. The examples here are so convincing. How can one pick from this group because they gave us performances that are so different? Again this was a great video. Next up: the male actors??!
When an actor transforms into a character that is so different from themselves (and does it well), it makes the viewer more appreciative of the challenges he/she faced while creating this persona. Like you, I have great respect for those performances that tested the boundaries. As for the male counterparts, there are only a small handful, so I may combine them with Supporting Actors, who also represent a small number on this topic. Thank you for your continued support!
I haven't seen all of the performances - especially many of those post-1970 - but I definitely feel that Sophia Loren certainly deserved her win in 1962 (and I say as a die-hard Natalie Wood fan; she was nominated that year for her riveting performance in "Splendor in the grass").
Most of them are Deserving! But Jodie Foster in The Accused is most deserving, just for the Rape scene, that is very hard to Watch! Also, Sophia Loren is so Beautiful in that Interview clip!
Foster has spoken at length about that scene, and how difficult it was for her and the other actors. I can only imagine how traumatic that must have been to enact something so horrendous.
These 4 are "Monster Stars"...but I must select Charlize Theron. She was absolutely unrecognizable. As for the "List Of 12"...WOWZERS! Hard enough to pick one out of four. So much talent....so many outstanding performances. This is such a great example Oscarman of how you keep things lively and spirited your videos. Love the "Choices" and absolutely LOVE reading the comments from the other Fans! Cheers From The Balcony in COW-lumbus, Ohio MOO
Thank you for your supportive words! I found this bit of Oscar history interesting to discuss, as it covers a wide stretch of years which show the differences not only in film styles but in the kinds of performances that were deemed worthy of an award. I love comments from viewers too!
Thank you for this one, it showcases how these amazing women carried a film or even saved a film, like Lange. However, I think Misery should've got a screenplay nod.
Wow, so many contributors here expressed a lot of the same comments I made in other segments even down to some of the lines that were recited on screen.
My top 3 of these performances: 3rd. Joanne Woodward in Three Faces of Eve. She was so good in it that I felt the Academy should award her 3 Oscars for each character 😉 2nd. Charleze Theron in Monster. I was so fascinated about her performance as Muornos that I ended up watching the movie twice at cinema and a few more times in DVD😅 1st. Kathy Bates in Misery. It's pretty obvious. Kathy's Anne Wilkes still scare me off til today. I once thought that Kathy in her real life might possess similar characteristics 😂. I used to dream to be adopted by some Hollywood stars when i was young and I told my friends I would probably adjust to any offer except from Kathy Bates, i was worried she would transform Ann Wilkes while adopting me😂 I'm still cannot overcome with the fact that Jodie won over Glenn Close in Dangerous Liaison after Cher stole the Oscar from Glenn in previous year. The 80s decade was the first years I watched Academy Awards and it was when I predicted a back to back best actress win for my favorite performer Glenn. 😔
That's a great Top 3. I think most would understand why you would refuse being in the care of Annie Wilkes. As for Glenn...we're all patiently waiting for her to finally receive her long-overdue Oscar.
My favorite is Charlize Theron for Monster. I have this performance in my Mt. Rushmore of Best Actress winners. Btw, Kathy Bates would was such a great win, imo.
I put Theron’s performance in Monster right up there with Marlon Brando in The Godfather, Meryl Streep in Sophie’s Choice, Jamie Foxx in Ray (she pretended the award to him the following year), Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln and Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour. Bates earned her’s as well. I wish What’s Live Got To Do With It had come out in 1994 so Bassett could’ve won over Lange. I do like Lange’s performance in Blue Sky, but it felt like they gave her the Best Actress Oscar, because they couldn’t give it to her back in 1983 for Frances, because of Streep’s indelible performance in Sophie’s Choice.
We think alike! I did a video awhile ago about "What if?" Bassett had been nominated the next year, would she have won? And I agree about Theron, most definitely.
I wish Glenn Close had a film in 1994. She would have gotten an Oscar that year cause she is great in everything. It was slim pickings that year and Jessica Lange has been better before. But my favourite hands down is the marvellous and scary Kathy Bates. I was going to mention Halle Berry but monsters ball got 2 nominations
Joanne Woodward is a better actor than Paul Newman, but she is an actress, and he is a movie star. Still, I would have voted for Deborah Kerr for HEAVEN KNOWS, MR, ALLISON for 1957 Best Actress Award. I would have voted for Woodward to win in 1968 for RACHEL, RACHEL over Katharine Hepburn who I think is very overrated as a actress.
True - Woodward was never really a "star," a moniker which overshadowed Newman's talent. Whether a man or a woman, it is more difficult to gain acceptance when the public focuses on your looks.
@@oscarman42 Newman was the mid-20th century Clark Gable, A good actor who was incredibly photogenic and charismatic. Woodward did some of her best work on television, especially DO YOU REMEMBER LOVE in which she played a woman developing dementia, which is ironic since it has been reported that Woodward, now 93 or 94, has dementia.
Thank you! Yes, Foster was candid about the sexism that existed (and to date, still does) in the industry. So glad she persevered and fought for the role.
Hands down Kathy Bates is the most deserving. She is in my top 5 best actress wins of all time. I love that photo of Hepburn's 4 Oscars.(thanks for that)
Maybe I'm in minority but I don't think Jessica Lange deserved the Oscar for her performance in Blue Sky. Jodie Foster was much better in Nell and Winona Ryder was better in Little Women
Kathy Bates in Stephen King's Misery (1990) is my substantial choice of the rest of the female winners. Bates gave a gothic, spine-chilling Oscar performance as mad and crazy Annie Wilkes. Along with James Cann (may he RIP), her most hysterical scene was when Cann attacked and finally subdued her on the floor and proceeded to shove his burnt manuscript pages into her mouth I find one of cinema's most triumphant endings ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4-8adc39DV0.html🤣🤣🤣🤣. What a fight they had together!!! But imagine in your wildest imagination if Roseanne Barr had decided to accept the role instead of Bates. Was it possible for Caan at the time to risk the challenge of mutilating Barr due to her obese body frame? How atrociously wild that would be if such an arrangement could have taken place. Kathy Bates received widespread acclaim for her role, successfully making Annie Wilkes among Hollywood's Top 100 Heroes & Villains list. The quality of Kathy's performance was the delicate balance that can tip without warning from sweetly cheerful to psychotic rage.
According to her daughter, Christina, Joan Crawford feigned the flu so she missed the 1945 Academy Award presentation. Crawford was nominated and won for MILDRED PIERCE. Christina said her mother was afraid how she would react had she lost the Oscar race; IIRC, the 1945 race was a strong one for Best Actress. As you once noted previously, Oscarma42, wasn't it remarkable how much Joan Crawford recovered from the flu once she had won the award?
Very much so! As you probably saw in my "exclusive video" of her Oscar win, Crawford received her Oscar (and the press) in full dress and makeup. It's a shame that fear prevented her from attending the ceremony - it would have been the highlight of her career.
My top three could almost be interchangeable 1. Charlize Theron 2. Sophia Loren 3.Kathy Bates 4. Jodie Foster 5. Marie Dressler 6. Julianne Moore 7. Joanne Woodard 8. Katharine Hepburn 9. Jessica Lange 10. Bette Davis 11. Helen Hayes 12. Mary Pickford
I’ve always had deep disrespect for Kate Hepburn because she never attended an Oscars award show through all those years and all those nominations. I didn’t know that at a later date she confessed that it did show a lack of character on her part not to do so. And she did appear once but that was to give the Hersholt humanitarian award. But for Hepburn of all people not to attend the Oscars decade after decade after decade is unforgivable. IMHO
I just don't think she cared about any of it, which was her prerogative. That said, it's curious why the Academy repeatedly awarded someone who pretty much disregarded/disrespected their mission.
@@oscarman42 I agree with your comment completely - however, the industry gave her so much. (I can’t help but think of the line from King Lear re sharper than a serpent’s tooth is to have a thankless child ….)
@@oscarman42 ….I don’t think it’s one of her best either, but for that year I think it was. The one performance I wish Lange got more credit for was The Music Box.
Davis, Hepburn and Moore won not for their best work, which was All About Eve, The Philadelphia Story and Far from Heaven. How strange, really! Lange, Theron and Foster stand out for me. I shall choose Charlize Theron for her transformation and masterful development of character.
Definitely agree with you about the first three wins. Just shows how timing can play a major role in an Oscar victory. Theron is among my Top 5 Best Actress wins!
Ranking 1.Charlize Theron 2.Kathy Bates 3.Joanne Woodward/Katharine Hepburn (TIED) 4.Jodie Foster 5.Julianne Moore 6.Sophia Loren 7.Jessica Lange 8.Marie Dressler 9.Bette Davis 10.Helen Hayes 11.Mary Pickford All of them are good performances except for Coquette who is....pretty terrible in the film. Out of these, the only film that shouldve gotten more nominations is Misery.
Remember, acting techniques and styles has changed since the beginning of films. Camera work has changed, sound has changed. Everything that would influence an actor’s decision making back in the 30’s no longer applies. Even the tempo of the way people talked back then is different from today. So you can’t put Katharine Hepburn for Morning Glory up against Kathy Bates for Misery. Those that adapt to change over time survives, so that would be The Great Kate.
Theron & Bates deeply worthy.. some of them are cringe..I believe I saw Hepburn's three (at the time) Oscars at a display in the Empire State Building.. might have been a Ripley's Believe It or Not sponsored thing because no actor had three at the time..
It’s hard for me to be totally on board with Bette Davis for Of Human Bondage as I think Colbert was deserving of the Oscar . I have the same thoughts on her roles in All About Eve and Whatever Happened To Baby Jane. I think Judy Holliday and Anne Bancroft were deserving of the Oscar. Three times I think they got it right but it went against Bette Davis. Bette however had such an amazing body of work. I think she should have won for one of her iconic roles.
@@oscarman42 No doubt! She wasn't lacking in confidence .She would never pull a Jimmy Stewart or Cate Blanchett and vote for another nominee like they have said either.
Least deserving ==== Jessica Lange. It should have gone to Jodie foster for Nell. But then Jodie would have won her third Oscar and she would be in the runner up spot with Meryl. Neither of whom will ever win #4. Hollywood has to protect Kate the Great.
This happened 5 times. Emil Jannings (The Way of All Flesh), Jose Ferrer (Cyrano de Bergerac), Cliff Robertson (Charly), Michael Douglas (Wall Street) and Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland).
