📍 The quarrel between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis was the most famous “catfight” of Hollywood’s golden age, though Crawford was already a dominant actress, the famous symbol for MGM, when Davis’s career began. The background was probably both professional and private jealousy. But what was the real reason behind their hysterical relationship? And what is the common in the two actresses...what we all wish it wasn't.

The simplest answer is the more you see yourself in someone else, the more you dislike them. They make you see your faults and you cannot look away. Besides in the case of these actresses, they were played like puppets by studio executives. Truly a shame.

Only in your imagination was Bette Davis ever a chump to any man's manipulation. You really don't know much about her if you think she just lollled, "how high?" if some jerk ordered her to jump. White Women Don't Jump.

Exactly.. and Bette Davis got more and more exasperated with the out of control rumors and "tales" of their "feud" towards the end of her life and ESPECIALLY after working with Faye Dunaway. More than once she made it clear that the kind of behavior that many THOUGHT happened between Davis and Crawford would simply never be tolerated on any set and that above all, despite what she thought of Crawford, they were professionals and were civil. She may not have liked Crawford, but she was quick to point out how they were both women and even they knew and were on to what the studios and the gossip columns were doing.

What wasn't mentioned here is that Bette looked down upon any actor/actress who did not attend acting school or had more of a classical background. Bette considered Joan an amateur as she had no formal training and came from a lower class background. In Baby Jane, Bette spend a lot of time on set with Victor Buono, whom she considered a proper actor because he was a member of the Globe Theater Players and had done a lot of Shakespearean characters. So that must have added fuel to the fire.

@@Garsons-oq4lh Yeah.. I caught that too.. Joan didn't sleep her way to the top. She was a hard working Silent Film actress and let's face it, one of the few who would successfully make the transition from silent films to the "Talkies". I wondered about this feud between these two, and I concluded they bumped heads, because they were equally matched, in acting skills. But I do see a slight difference in Joan Crawford being better, because no one can bring the drama better than her. And I just love how she kept that elegance, about herself. But yet still Betti Davis had such a free spirit in acting, more natural, less scripted. So there was an undisputed sharpness, and originality about her work. Which puts me right back to their both having equal footage in acting, it's just what one did a little bit more than the other, at times that made it hard to pick who was best.

The reason for the feud was simply because they were both to much alike. It's like they were twin sisters in a sort of way. Mrs. Crawford's birthday was March 23 and Mrs. Davis birthday was April 5 they were both (Aries). Thats why they were so jealous of each other. Hi Age of Vintage, WOW another fabulous story of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. It was no secret in Hollywood that these two actresses just couldn't get a long. They fought over movies, men, & just who was the most popular actress between them. Apparently it was no secret Joan Crawford loved the men but she had quite a penchant for the ladies as well. It was rumoured that Joan actually had a secret crush on Bette & had fallings out with the press that it wasn't true. They both played a brilliant part in "What ever Happened to Baby Jane " certainly a Hollywood great. I do think there was probably more to their story, however neither of them wanted to not be considered for a role, so they pushed each other just far enough. They did argue & fight over many male film stars. Love Love from Australia 🇦🇺💛💛❤❤💜💜💖💖🎬📽🔪⚘⚘💋

Joan was drop-dead gorgeous in the thirties whereas plain Bette was the finer actress; it was her acting that Joan admired most about Davis. Imagine Crawford playing Miss Moffatt or Queen Elizabeth I of England? She'd have been laughed off the screen. Davis did remark, however: "Boy, did that dame have a face". Crawford was already an established star in 1931, the year Bette made her film debut in a potboiler called "Bad Sister". Watching Davis in this silly melodrama, one could never guess she'd be the winner of two Oscars and by 1939 would be the Queen of Hollywood...

I'm a Joan fan. The issue regarding Franchot Tone always intrigued me because Joan had already been involved with Tone & made two films with him prior to him working with Bette. How did Bette not know Joan's history with the man when Joan was the biggest female of that time? Joan & Franchot had starred in Dancing Lady & Sadie McKee by the time he worked with Bette. To be perfectly honest the whole feud was Bette's doing. She was jealous of Crawford. From the beginning in the 30's Davis was jealous of the attention & leading men because Joan was the bigger star. Bette felt superior to Joan because as she put it, "I'm an actress. Joan's a movie star." Later in life Bette even admitted she wished she'd been, "half as beautiful" as Joan when asked about Crawford. I don't think there were ever any ill feelings on Joan's part toward Bette until Bette initiated the whole thing. I'm not fond of Davis. She makes Baby Jane unwatchable for me with her overacting and shrill voice. I only watch because of Joan.

Personally, I think BOTH actresses don't think they were good enough in their line of work so as result, they both saw each other as a threat for qualities they lacked. Something I think Ryan Murphy nailed perfectly in ''Feud'' during the scene where they both clashed over each other's flaws and qualities.

Professional jealousy. Both did similar roles, both were competitive over their careers, I suspect. Other than that it suited the film studios and the press for people like this to supposedly hate each other. Seems a few men got into the act as well.

I don't know, but everyone is as they are, one cannot change that, but I have always found Mrs. Crawford's personality much more interesting than Mrs. Davis, not only as a person but also as an actress. I have always disliked Mrs.Davis's way of being extremely arrogant, pretentious, always with that feeling of superiority.

@zacblake9249
@zacblake9249 3 года назад
Bette turned down that part because she didn't want to work with Michael Curtiz again. Also, she felt the mother was too weak, and under no circumstances would she tolerate the behavior that the daughter (Veda) displayed. Bette wasn't the only one -- several actresses, among them Ann Sheridan and Rosalind Russel, turned down the part. The role she did regret not playing was the one that Crawford played in Possessed (1947).

I love Bette Davis. She is my all time fav actress. Starting to appreciate Joan Crawford’s acting. In life no one is going to like everyone. Sometimes unfortunately others pick and choose sides and keep the BS going. I am sure some of the reason there was so much disdain about how these ladies felt about each other was because Hollywood gossips probably pit them against each other always trying to compare them to each other. Making statements like Joan was prettier or Betty was the better actress etc... of course that fueled the feud. But whatever it was they are both considered great actresses and had lots of actresses look up to them. I personally don’t understand why Joan disliked Bette but I can Understand by some of what I heard why Bette had issues with Joan. Either way at the end of the day they have both left us with great movies to enjoy.

I too don't have the impression they truly hated each other. I think they disliked each other, although Joan truly did admire Bette as an actress. I don't think Bette took Joan seriously enough to 'hate' her, no mater how much she poked jokes at her expense. I will say I was shocked that in This N' That--which was largely written as a rebuttal to B.D.'s My Mother's Keeper--Bette STILL voiced support for Christina Crawford and Mommy Dearest. I was actually disgusted.

Please stop with the misogyny . There is an actual research and it suggests that marginalized groups such as women , PoC often hate each other because they have to constantly compete each other because even though these groups are protected by law they still have to recover from the lack of resources opportunities and awareness around and in their lives by themselves. Top it with the idea that privileged groups (men , white men in the west, upper class men in the east) often perputuate that only a few of the marginalized people have a place among the great ones, besides them, the marginalized groups struggle to survive. And the affluents love the "hunger games" this psychological bias brings. Women are still suffering in some industries especially in the film industry and I can only imagine how hard it must have been back then! So they fought over men- because they provided "security'" and great PR roles and their place in news and tabloids , so yeah !That! I am no one's fan and yeah maybe they did it for the media presence but just stop with the "hungry birds" narrative when they were the subject of constant patriarchal gatekeeping and had to fight to survive.

If there really was a rivalry or feud between Bette and Joan it was ironically AFTER they made Baby Jane together. Before that you could barely call themselves rivals since they had such fundamentally different acting styles. Bette knew from early in her career that she was not going to be anywhere near the great beauty that Joan was, and Joan knew though she was a good actress, she could never compete as a character acter like Bette. After they made Baby Jane, it was a minor feud but nontheless Bette and Joan to the end of their days, repeatedly made it clear in public that they both saw each other as expert professional actors, always knew their lines, always were on time. In a rather ironic twist, Bette Davis would have a develop a deep hatred for someone and that was Faye Dunaway, who would later then play Joan Crawford in the notorious biopic "Mommy Dearest".

Oh PUHLEEZE!! this rivalry was 70% made by the male-dominated industry. Bette addressed this head on at least several times. She said in NO way would the studio allow such behavior. She said BOTH she and Crawford were professional and behaved like such. And Bette had complimented that Crawford was always professional, was the first on the set and knew her lines and such. It was not until Toxic Tina wrote her book about her mother and that she worked with Faye Dunaway did Davis began to be a little more magnanimous about Crawford and praised her professionalism.
