@David Hames what do you expect people in that kind of abject poverty to do? Our system is impossible to face when you don't have money. You want to have a house? You need to get a job. You want to get a job? You need education. You don't have education because your parents didn't have time to help you when you were younger because they were struggling to work hard enough keep themselves from becoming homeless. While there are some homeless people who are complete slackers who just want to try to live for free, the majority of them are people who have literally no way back into society because of circumstances they had no control over. It's not as simple as you think.

I was homeless a few years ago and I wasn't on drugs or alcohol not everyone that is homeless is on drugs don't get me wrong we've all thought it in the past but it isn't true fortunately for me I was able to go into an hostel after a few weeks and in there the majority of people were clean it was a truly an eye opener so as humans we shouldn't make an assumption that that man or woman is on drugs cause she's homeless you should get to know them first! I always give £10 to a homeless person they are people too. But if you want to just assume the homeless are on drugs then what about the people that have a house/flat they are on drugs too and who cares if the homeless spend the money on drugs, have you slept on the streets in the cold? People deals with things in different ways we ain't all perfect we all make mistakes and we shouldn't take it out on foreigners either it isn't all their fault. People are quick to bitch about the foreigners coming into our country but they do the jobs most British people wouldn't do and our best doctors are foreigners but when your ill or need treatment from the hospital your not bitching about them then to their face are you. I think some people need to get off their high horse and realise we are all the same, it's time to grow up.

Either way, according to sociologists, the biggest cause for homelessness is disability (Mental and physical) disease, parental abandonment, old age and corporal downsizing and not drugs and booze. "Don't give them money, they'll buy drugs and alcohol" This is a lie, they're most likely to buy bus fairs, food, clothes, tents or rent rooms. (Personal experience) "They're lazy" Another lie, I've seen homeless people picking up litter and cleaning graffiti. They're less lazy than our fucking bankers and politicians. The "homeless people are lazy drug addicts" is demonisation from the elite.

Did I say they would not use it for drugs? No, yet again, that is a lame excuse because you can give the homeless person food or used clothing. Nothing expensive, subway sandwich, McDonalds, name any fast-food place. You could keep clothes that no longer fit you in the car to give to someone homeless or donate them to shelters if you do not meet anyone. You can hardly sell used clothing anyways, why not give it to someone instead of it sitting in your house taking up space. While people give them only the necessities to live they are forced to go cold turkey because they would not be able to pay for drugs, and this would help them move forward; instead of people enabling their addictions that could be keeping them from moving forward.

This video reminds me of a case that caused an outcry couple of years ago: a homeless man got beaten up really hard for 2 hours by some young lads in an abandoned tunnel, they weren't drunk but just did for a thrill. They came to the tunnel and beat him up 3 times within a day. Finally the homeless guy couldn't stand and stabbed one of the attackers to death. Then the police came and had him arrested. The killed lad's parents went crazy and called for the death penalty. If it weren't for the fact that the CCTV was exposed by the media, he probably would be sentenced to death cuz the dead kid's parents were some kind of senior officers in government. The homeless guy ended up sentenced 5 years in jail for manslaughter. Sad story. But at least he hot a place to live. This world has never been fair. WTF.

Brendan Mather so Torries is a word. And you're suggest that taxing the one % is a good idea. It will drive people and business out of the country, and even if it didn't, it isn't enough to cover the huge amount that Corbyn has promised it for. Also supporting Corbyn would involve me supporting someone who likes the IRA, and has a Marxist as the shadow chancellor. Labour isn't bad, but in my opinion, Corbyn is. And I don't read the daily mail. Whilst I might be an Muppet, I'm not a racist, or a Xenophobe. I tend to read 4 different newspapers to get a rough idea of what has happened.

My nan, who is ill and fragile and not rich, offered a homeless person near her street some sandwiches she had made because she’s always been incredibly selfless and kind. The homeless person told her that he wanted money and when she said she didn’t have any on her he started shouting and insulting her and saying that sandwiches were useless to him- that was when she realised that he wasn’t truly homeless and just want drug money. Apparently nowadays he’s living in a huge house, but she still sees him faking the act sometimes. But I applauded her for doing what she did, and despite that experience she still tries to help others because she knows that’s only the minority of homeless people. There will always be negative people in every group of people; celebrities, billionaires, elderly, teenagers, homeless people, mentally ill people, EVERYTHING. But you’ve got to make sure you don’t judge everyone based on that. There are good people also. I was shouted at by an elderly man on a bus when I was 8 years old because I was talking to my friend and didn’t see him walk on- so I didn’t offer him my seat. Even at that age I had been taught to do so, but I genuinely didn’t see. So he looked at me and said ‘I’m glad to know you’re disabled’ and I looked confused, and he said ‘well you must be disabled if you’re sitting in the front seats of the bus and aren’t willing to move for me’. I apologised and went to get up, but my mum behind me told the man that it was disgusting for him to talk to a child like that- and if he has a problem he should talk to her. Despite that experience, does that mean I don’t still stand up for the elderly? Of course not. Because that was only one man. People are too quick to judge every homeless person because of one negative story- but I’ve seen tons of homeless people who are amazing. Not everyone on the streets is even homeless either. Once I saw this man lying down on a coat on the floor with a woman and a child with him. He was shivering and crying and if you hadn’t have asked or took a second glance many would have assumed he was homeless. When I asked, I discovered that he was actually diabetic and had recently had a hip surgery. He had just fallen over and was having back spasms and was in serious pain. They had rung the hospital and were told it was a 2 hour wait (which was disgusting in itself). We asked if there was any way to help this poor man who was clearly in agony and sweating profusely, but they said there wasn’t anything we can do. Unsatisfied in leaving without helping, me and the people I was with went and purchased a packet of sweets from the supermarket nearby for the young girl who had been waiting so patiently with this man who may or may not have been her father. Even that small act of kindness- that wasn’t even for him- meant a lot. You don’t know anything about these peoples lives, so you can’t be quick to judge. Imagine yourself in their shoes. If you don’t want them to spend it on drugs (even though tons of non-homeless people use drugs and not everyone has a huge issue with that), then contribute whatever you can- food, drink, a blanket, even a ‘hello, how are you? Are you doing okay?’ proves that you care and view them as a person. Being viewed so negatively can have such negative psychological effects, it takes a lot to remain positive. I once saw a homeless man who wished everyone who went by a lovely day, and honestly it was so humbling and a wonderful gesture. But I bet he rarely heard anyone say it back, or even give him a glance. He wasn’t asking for anything or begging, he was merely spreading positivity but was still ignored- probably viewed as crazy or dangerous, purely because of where he was. Rethink what you are giving out to society. Is it positivity and generosity, or even whatever you can, whenever you can? Or is it negativity, selfishness and exclusion? I admit, I can’t give homeless people things often because I am only young and don’t have a lot myself yet. But when I do have something, and when I get more as I grow older, I will do my best to contribute to more than myself and my circle. My local supermarket has a box in which you can place unopened food to be sent to homeless shelters, and if I see a homeless person I know that even a small amount of change will do. When I have things to spare that I’m going to through away- like blankets or books or clothes or anything still in good condition- I will think twice and perhaps give these things to charity stores or the homeless or people who need them. It’s the little things that count and it’s never too late to change your habits. I wish to learn from my nans huge heart and grow as a person, because her generosity is truly inspiring to me.

The sad truth is, there are people who genuinely need help and kindness from the public, but there are also those who will take advantage of it. People who sleep rough get treated like shit because of the few who abuse people's kindness. Scammers who ask for money for a train ticket home after getting stuck overnight without their debit card. Lazy men and women who, rather than get an actual job, sit and beg for money, before climbing into their car and moving to another area of the city for more handouts. Worse is, people who use the donations they get for drugs, alcohol and non-essentials instead of trying to get a place to sleep. People who rather than get help for an illness blame others for not helping them. These few hurt the many who are in actual dire need of assistance.
@maleahlock
@maleahlock 6 лет назад
Jimbob1337 That is still not a valid reason for people to claim the homeless don't deserve human decency and kindness. It's their excuse for the guilt they feel over their own selfishness. It's perfectly fine if some people don't want to help, but they need to stop pretending it's because they have a moral reason not to.

I have a different kind of storym There was this guy who was homeless that I met a year ago. He had been homeless for around 2 years he had a beautiful dog called Redfoot. He said that the council only ever agreed to home him if he got rid of his dog and he refused it because he absolutely loved the dog. I know it seems stupid he didn't take the house but I understand why he didn't want to get rid of his dog. He's had the dog since it was a puppy and he absolutely adored it to the point where he'd spend most of the money he got from people to buy it food and treats. It was so sweet and heartbreaking at the same time. I bought the guy a coffee and some food as well as the dog some treats and gave him whatever money I could give. He also told me a story about why his dog was called Red foot. When he was a pup, he took a job of painting someone's room and the dog stood in a tray of red paint so he called him Redfoot and the name just stuck ever since. :')

First comment on a long thread that makes great sense. It's great how Russel has highlighted issues but I can't help feel frustrated by it. He Seems like a nice guy however I feel that all He is doing is pointing out what people know and If they didn't they do now but have no substance. What I mean is it would have been great if at the end of this clip he highlighted places and organisations to be involved with. He's in a relatively powerful position and can influence a lot of people and almost start a "movement" if you like. I'm not saying it's his responsibility to do so, however I do feel that if you are going to be so passionate about a subject and push people towards it, it would be a good idea to get something started yourself (if in a position to) and get people involved. Like bjy a small hostel employ homeless people to work the reception etc, make it an attraction, get people involved and and give them a year contract to become employable and have a roof over their heads. I'm not sure it's such an unrealistic idea, if I had the platform Russel dies I'd like to think I would. I would like to add, I'm sure he does a lot for his own charities as well.

I was off to a band sesh a few months ago. On my way through town i wanted to go the bakery for breakfast. As i walked through the city i saw a homeless man sat in a closed shops shelter. When i arrived at the bakery i bought 4 pasties. Then i set off to my band, it also meant i had to walk back down the same road where i saw the homeless guy. As i walked past him i decided to give him one of my pasties (i had decided to do this during my time at the bakery). Then, as i turned to face the path ahead properly again, he reached out to me. He wanted to shake my hand to say thankyou. At first i was hesitant, but then i decided to to accept his hand shake. He said thank you. As i walked off i repeated in my head why i had done the right thing. The way i saw it was he is a person just as I am, granted less fortunate, he is still a human being. Living a life on the streets, he probably doesn't have many friends or anyone to hang out with so this brief social moment probably meant a lot to him. People who have to live like this can't be blamed if they feel society rejects them, so i shook his hand as a way to tell him society accepts him. Once I arrived at my band I did wash my hands. This was not because i reject the homeless man, or because i am disgusted in the homeless man, but simply because he could have had anything on him. As well as I did my part to protect him, It's also ok to protect myself.

What we should highlight is the fact that being homeless and sleeping rough are two different things. All rough sleepers are homeless but not all homeless people are rough sleepers. I was actually classed as homeless for 2 years. However I was living in a hostel but because it was a hostel it wasn’t classed as my home. The actual number of rough sleepers isn’t even 10% of the homeless population. Not trying to make light of the situation at all, we need to make the situation clear so we can go out and find those that need it the most. It’s hard to find and help those few thousand that are sleeping rough in the winter when we put them in the same category as the 300,000 homeless people

After returning to my mates, one of em looked at me with disgust "why'd you give him that?" my mate asked "he's an old man living in the cold in a town where nobody takes notice. You constantly talk about the homeless, why don't you give anything?" I asked in response. His answer baffled me and still does to this day "not my problem" How can someone ignore the suffering that goes on outside their front door? How can anyone be so blind that they view the homeless as nothing more than scum? They're people who can't control their situation and aren't just being bullied by the people but by the government as well.

I am not taught about homelessness in primary or right now in secondary and my mum, the woman who gave birth to me” who is also divorced and not from the UK teaches me that it’s basically a scam. I remember when I was in New York for my birthday, and had a bit of cash with me, as gifts from friends and family. While we were out walking, I saw a homeless man sitting in a crowded street corner, completely ignored. So, being shy and introverted, I mustered up the courage to go and talk to him. While we were talking, I pulled out twenty dollars and gave it to him. He cried and said that was the nicest thing someone had done for him in years. Although I never saw him again, I still think about him and pray he's alright. They are just human, like us, and should be treated just the same.

If the government cannot sort out a way to help the homeless and reduce the abuse they get, let them have something to ease their pain. My city has a needle exchange which is a place where people can take whatever drugs they have to test their purity, get clean needles and have somewhere safe to take them. Maybe more cities need needle exchanges to tackle the spreading of disease and damage caused by drugs, but people should be allowed to take away the pain of being homeless however they want.

Often crying myself to sleep, staying up as long as possible to have time to emotionally process what she was throwing at me, using me for personal gain without even caring about my school and college work.... Until I've just had enough. 8 years of emotional abuse and that is when I decided to just get the hell out at the end of June. Now, I am in temporary accommodation from the council and have been since early July. In one place, a B&B, I had dampness in the corner of my room, and when it started to rain cats and dogs, large drops would pound against the wardrobe and the floor. Stalkery neighbours who would not leave me alone and seemed to know my schedule so well that they would just so happen to go out when I did and would sometimes follow me. That same couple causing the poor hosts a shit load of hassle by smoking in their room when they aren't supposed to. When they were eventually told to leave, they didn't pack anything, so the hostess was left to pack it all and clean the room as well. We've had two couples start physical fights with the hosts on two separate occasions and being racist towards them. We were not allowed to cook for ourselves as there were no fridges, cookers or microwaves at our disposal, which triggered my restrictive eating problems. I am now in a supported accommodation hostel, and things haven't exactly been peachy here. We've been reporting our flatmate over and over again for not doing her dishes, coming in under the influence (which, for all of us, is a massive trigger given our pasts with alcoholic or drug addict parents), and eating everyone else's food (shared kitchen). Instead of taking direct action, we've been told by the staff that we're bullying her and a few days later received letters from one of the staff about harassment and bullying. We've had huge arguments break out between residents during TV room get-togethers that had nearly ended up in physical fights. A resident has been picking on everyone when not in the hostel building so we couldn't do anything about it. And many other problems. Here's the thing, I am Polish and have been here for 11 years. Currently I am on a study break from Open Uni. And the person bullying everyone else is Polish as well. I feel more Scottish than Polish and this country is now my home. This woman is exactly the opposite, and seems to have a disdain for everyone in here, including the staff. I love this country and love the people of Scotland and Britain as a whole. Absolutely hate the woman. I understand people's hate towards immigrants and why people voted to leave the EU. To be honest, if I was able to vote, I would have voted to Brexit too. Sure, it does make things difficult for me and other immigrants who are here for a better life and not just for benefits, but I am willing to go through extra motions in order to be here. Thanks to people who are just in it for the benefits. it was really difficult to claim ESA and PIP, especially PIP, as I had to go to appeal. My mental health issues cause a lot of problems with being able to work, but as soon as it is stable, I will be doing something like being a photographer or a graphic designer while studying with the OU. Being here in temporary accommodation makes studying difficult, as I only operate on my phone, but once I get my own place, I'll be able to go back to studying and work hard towards giving back to the country that has given me so much, by becoming a psychologist. Through research and practice as either a clinical or counselling psychologist , I want to positively influence people and society, and begin to help shape the future of others for the better.
