1- Making a small alcohol stove for a snowpeak

This is a video about the process I went through to make a stove for my Snowpeak 700. I have many stoves that work well, but some are too big for the smaller diameter of the pot I use. I wanted a stove that required no pot stand and a stove that didnt heat the handles up to the point where I couldnt touch it. This video shows making and using this new stove.

Well done. I have need for the same as I run smaller pots and cups. I'm getting to the party here nine years late, but your film work is still certainly relevant.

Wrap that sucker with a little fiberglass wick and you have yourself a very good stove. I bet it would boil in under 5 minutes with a wider pot. I know the snow peak is part of your kit, but I am betting! It looked like the flame was coming around the bottom of the stove more than would be perfectly efficient. Perhaps fewer jet holes. Thank you for sharing that boil over. That is the first I have seen and will make me think twice about indoor testing.

The flare up segment @ 15:40 sec is very useful.

The best thing I got out of this video is seeing an actual fuel flare-up starting at 14:38. Very sobering, and thank you for providing a preventative solution as well. Overall, the video is very informative. Thanks.

Thats a great way to do it. I have done that before too. sometimes i am in a rush and just use whats around.

Thanks. The stove boiled over before I vented it. I took the thime to vent it and film it, then piece all the clips together. Originally i tested the stove after the build and it boiled over. I remembered a video I saw where there was a refrence to venting. I tried it and it worked. I took the time to re edit because I didnt want anyone to have that happen to them. Although it is a risky hobby to begin with. Yeah pot stand is one more thing to bring, one more think to break :-) Thanks!

@Woodenarrows Thanks glad you like it. The snowpeak has no problems balancing on it. The outside diameter is 1 3/4 inches.

@EconoChallenge Yeah all good points. I like the idea of using less fuel. As far as the stability thing I definitely see it. Too may times I have been trying to find a level area, and end up just making due. I always think i will find one and end up guarding my pot ferciously. :-)

@aokspage Its a gram weenie thing. Using a primer wick will heat up the stove faster and you will get a blossom faster. Priming pans and self starts burn more fuel to get the stove going. You will be wasting less fuel starting your stove. I agree that you still need a pan under the stove. I have a stove that spits fuel once in a while. Without the can lid under the stove I would igniting the forest floor. Not a good thing. The can lid also adds stability when you go without a pot stand.

1 pen spring. and pipe cleaner for primer. or small aluminium dish under the stove add small amount of alcohol.

From everything I can find on these stoves the burn time is perfect for water but maybe a little shy for cooking. For purifying water you only need to bring water to a rolling boil and that's it, the bad critters die well bellow boiling. Reconstitution of dehydrated food takes longer than the stove delivered but still edible. Great stove at a near perfect size, thank you! Consider this design stolen!

According to the Washington State Department of Health and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, you should bring the water to boil and keep it rolling for one minute to purify it. At altitudes above one mile, 2,000 meters, you should increase the rolling time to three minutes.

@BrokenAeroVT Good to know. I was wondering if that was the case. That boil over happened three minutes into the burn. Since the venting I have not had that happen. But i guess it is always a concern with these stoves.

@BrokenAeroVT I was wondering what those sparks were. I thought maybe it was bits of steel wool that were trapped in it from polishing. I will test it some more to see what is the best amount to use.

I like it. However to you that to purify water it would have to boil for much longer. I'm going to have to make one.

@EconoChallenge Thanks for watching. I always shyed away from the wick around the bottom. I really dont have a good reason why. But I was thinking about it. I also thought a priming pan under the stove would be good, even just to catch the boil over, if it ever happened again. I think just being ready for such an event would be a good measure. Anticipate an accident before it happens. Since I vented the stove it hasnt happened again. Glad you liked it.

I use razor blades as well. I think it would have taken a real long time in this situation, those cans are thick. I sometimes use my miter saw.

@BrokenAeroVT So maybe a little taller stove would do better? Or just less fuel.
@aokspage
@aokspage 11 лет назад
I pump the water through a water purifier. Then use the stove to cook with. I supose you could boil to purify but it would take a lot of fuel and you would have to fill up with fuel several times. If i were boiling for purification I would use a fire. Thanks for watching

Nice sized stove, I like it. What is the O.D. of that 3 oz bottle? I've been using some bottle lately that are 2-1/16" O.D. but wouldn't mind something even smaller.

some people do, but i dont know if you would have to modify the stove a bit.

Great video. I have the same mug and have been looking for a stove smaller than the standard soda can stove. I have some similar cans that might work. What is the diameter of the cans you used? Sorry my first comment was sent incomplete by mistake.

can i use methylated spirits for fuel?
@larrymbouche
@larrymbouche 5 лет назад
Methylated spirits IS Alcohol, just poison. DO NOT DRINK IT. A HALF OUNCE WILL KILL YOU. Ethyl alcohol is the drinking type, EXCEPT : Denatured means that although it is the correct type of alcohol to drink..!!! IT HAS BEEN POISONED BECAUSE THERE HAS BEEN NO ALCOHOL TAX PAID ON IT. DO NOT DRINK IT.!!! IT will work for fuel fine.

Check out you tuber LittleBitWorks and try out his groove stove, make it with a 8.4 oz. red bull can no drilling and it has built in pot stand. This stove will boil 2 cups on 20 ml alcohol in 7 min. also.
