#1 Mistake DIY Painters Make (How to paint over oil based paint)

In this video I’ll show you the results of painting water based paint over oil based paint. There’s a simple trick anyone can use to identify water based vs oil based paint and avoid making the mistake I made on this job site that I won’t forget. I’ll show you with examples in this video.
I also cover this mistake on my website at:
notwaitingtoli...
This is the biggest mistake to avoid as a painter. Water based paint adheres poorly to oil based paint without an oil based primer and comes off with just a gentle scratch of a fingernail. Peeling on doors can start within days.
I read a horror story where a woman took the time to repaint all of the interior doors for her house. She used a water based paint over an oil based paint and had to scrape and repaint every door within a week due to immediate peeling.
The easiest way to determine whether you’re about to paint over water based paint or oil based paint is to remove a small sample.
How do you remove water based paint? Water based paint is removed remarkably easily using denatured alcohol.
How do you remove oil based paint? Oil based paint is removed using either mineral spirits, paint thinner, acetone, or paint stripper. Mineral spirits can be found in an odorless variety and does a good job of removing fresh oil based paint, but doesn’t work as well as the heavier duty noxious chemicals like acetone or paint stripper. For old, difficult to remove oil based paint, the best bet is to use acetone or paint stripper. However these will leave a sticky residue, unlike removing water based paint with denatured alcohol which leaves no residue.
How do you paint over oil based paint? Oil based paint adheres well to other oil based paints. If applying water based paint over oil based paint, an oil based primer like Kilz Original works well. Even though the primer is oil based, it’s designed to bond to water based paints.
I’ve used Kilz oil based primer in the past to paint over wall paper and varnish and polyurethane for great results.

I need to remove oil based paint from several walls throughout a home. It was applied unevenly and paint streaks are visible everywhere. In your video, you discuss using denatured alcohol, paint thinner and acetone to remove oil based paint. Is this an difficult job, requiring a lot of scraping and repeated reapplication of the solvents in order to remove it all, or does it come off the wall relatively easily? When it comes off, is it also removing the texture?

At 3:26 when he said "A good feature of oil-based paint is that it's easy to clean with just soap and water", he was referring to cleaning the surface of dry oil-based paint, not cleaning your brushes or tools. Oil-based paint requires paint thinner for cleaning brushes and tools. Just wanted to clarify for those who are watching who may not have understood.
@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 4 года назад
Matt Mason great point to clarify. Cleaning up the actual oil based paint itself is a pain. And disposing of paint thinner correctly is an even bigger pain. The wasted thinner/paint mess needs to dry before being disposed in the normal trash and the remaining thinner has to be saved or disposed at a special water facility.

Wow. VERY HELPFUL! A painter did this to all 18 interior doors of our house--PLUS the trim. Didn't charge for his destruction. 😤 I'm guessing we need to replace all of them and start from scratch. Over-sprayed onto some of the walls too.
@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 3 года назад
Glad you found this useful. In this video I wiped off the door and trim with denatured alcohol. But that would be quite a lot of chemical exposure in your situation. I have heard of people light sanding (keying) the surface with ~100 grit sand paper then priming the surface with an oil based primer. That’s still a lot of sanding. You just want to make sure you sand off everything that comes off easy. And then dust the surface before painting. Whatever you do: Stay positive. That’s the only way to get through a task like this. The good news is that there is a solution.

I had some "pro painters" paint with latex paint over doors and trim that had always been painted with oil-based paint. They promised they had prepped the surfaces for painting, but they had not. I recognized the problem pretty quickly and got rid of those painters before they could ruin more of the paint on the existing trim, doors and walls that were originally painted before WWII with oil- based paint. Since then I have been looking for an easier solution than trying to sand off their work. I hope your tip about using denatured alcohol will work for me. The latex paint can look good, as long as it is never touched. When it receives the slightest scratch, up it comes. Oil-based paint has such a hard finish that in older houses, like mine, the wood work loses moisture and shrinks inside the hard shell of the paint, and ultimately debonds from shrinkage. Once you crack that hard shell and see what has happened over 40 or 60 years, or longer, you end up having to remove a lot of debonded paint, sand it down and start with an oil-based primer, etc., and you have to worry about lead particles in the air, HEPA vacuum cleaners, and getting an industrial grade gas mask in today's Covid-19 environment, where they are hard to find or afford. Thanks for sharing your experience and the solution to the problem with your viewers.
@notwaitingtolive

I appreciate your feedback on your experience with oil based paint. That's frustrating that you now have to correct their mistakes. I've flipped a couple 100 year old houses and noticed the cracking you describe where the wood shrinks inside the hard shell of the oil based paint and cracks. It was most prevalent on the interior window casing. I actually replaced some of the trim to avoid the tedious refinishing you described. When you're using the denatured alcohol I'd have multiple fans moving air out of the room. The fumes are pretty harsh after a while. I'd also recommend a cheap chemical odor mask (although I have no idea if you can even buy them at the store these days due to coronavirus demand). The denatured won't take off every little bit but it will take off what's weakly bonded in the first place. A light sanding with 100-grit can knock down whatever else needs to come off. Then the primer you use will lock in the rest. The job from this video was completed 10 months ago and has no apparent issues.

@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 4 года назад
Anthony Johnson oh man I feel your pain. You’re in a tough situation. Make sure you wear a P100 mask if you’re going to be using this much denatured alcohol and use multiple fans to keep the room well ventilated. If you’ve used a water based paint/primer combo paint you’re going to notice where the water based paint you applied has adhered well to the trim. I’d focus on removing what comes off easy and leave anything that needs serious elbow grease to take off. Some 100 grit sanding might help as well at this point to wear down any areas that don’t want to wipe off. And then I’d just cost over that with the oil based primer. The job I did in this video is 8 months old now and the trim hasn’t shown any trouble yet even though I didn’t get all the water based paint off perfectly.

Oh, one other note. I couldn't understand either why the last painter put down oil based paint in an upstairs bedroom. And besides what you said about easy clean up for stains and spills, there's also the " look " that a lot of people like as far as LESS brushstrokes showing in oil based paint finishes.

So oil based paint is more forgiving, ie, hides brush strokes?
@westfieldartworks8188
@westfieldartworks8188 4 года назад
@@MK-ih6wp That's correct. I believe because oil based paint is heavier and just lays down better without brushstrokes, that is, if you're looking for the no brushstroke look. Some people like brushstrokes to show as it looks more like a grainy natural wood.

Great video and have you tried sanding the oil finish off partly with a 160 grit sandpaper, then vacuum, wipe with a clean white rag or tac cloth? A sanding sponge lightly dampened will reduce particles in the air or you can use a sanding block with a vac attachment for reduced dust. I learned a lot with an Artist for 10 years doing Ventian Plaster, Faux finish, etc.. You can see his recent works which involve a blending of old and new methods such as squashing cans, adding coins, keys, found objects, rendered in Art from Greek Mythology (JonathanBressler).

I haven’t for walls but I have sanded cabinets and railings that had oil based polyurethane before painted with positive results. I appreciate your insight. I’ve also found alcohol based primer to work well. I love using the shellac based primer to block wood tannins when painting wood for the first time to keep them from bleeding through and most recently I used it to stop a greasy wall from bleeding through. I’d love to learn Venetian plaster, I’ve seen a couple videos of that on RU-vid that are simply amazing. I love watching the lost art that some of these painters still practice, I’ll definitely look up his stuff.

Derek Hussey 1. Light sand (~100 grit) the surface and wipe off the dust with a tack cloth, doesn’t need to be perfect. (In this video I was not able to get all the water based paint off and it’s still adhering nicely a year later) 2. Apply a dedicated oil based primer over what you previously painted. 3. Apply your water based paint.

Anything that claims to be paint and primer in one is a LIE. It's like 2in1 shampoo and conditioner. Marketing at its best. The only way to use water based paint (acrylic, latex, etc.) over oil based paint is to seal with a good quality oil based primer OR shellac primer.

For the trim, a wipe down with denatured alcohol and a light pass with 100-grit or so sand paper should get you to the point where you’re ready to cover up what’s needed with an oil based primer.

@notwaitingtolive

You need to sand the floor first with ~100 grit sand paper to give the paint the ability to adhere to the surface. You can use a pole sander or electric pole sander to make that task a lot easier than doing it by hand amzn.to/3hl64Ao. I'd recommend priming it as well with a bonding primer before painting. Floors take a lot of abuse. I'd recommend using oil based paints on the floor as they'll be more resilient.

Deb I prefer oil based paint as well in a home. I agree it looks much nicer and easier to clean. But you need to have the patience for the extra dry time (up to a day or more depending on temperature and humidity) and you also need to be extra careful as you'll need to use paint thinner to clean up has drips and your brushes. Here in Ohio oil based paint can be found at Home Depot in quarts. Other states such as Michigan still sell oil based paint in 1 and 5 gallon quantities to the public. But in other states like California I hear oil based paint is very difficult to find, perhaps even banned.

I'm a bit confused. Before painting over oil based painted wall with oil based primer, I'll have to remove all the water based paint or just clean/sand what's peeling? Darn it, my 80 year old father has been doing the painting himself for his 40yr old house. Now I know why we've had this problem...Would just painting over with the oil based primer be enough to get it ready for water based paint? (please say yes🤞)
@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 4 года назад
Chris G I’d recommend using a pole sander like this to lightly sand off what you can from the wall: amzn.to/3hexyY3 You need to peel back whatever’s flaking or peeling but not any deeper than that. Scuffing up the rest of the wall should help agitate anything else that wants to peel off in the near future. You don’t have to get rid of every little bit of water based paint. I only removed what I could get off at the time in this video and the paint is still adhering well since painting last summer. Let us know how it works out.

@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 5 лет назад
Sylvia K I use denatured alcohol to clean up fresh water based paints. I use paint thinner to clean up fresh oil based paints. I use acetone to clean up dried old paint of either type. And in general I simply dust before applying new paint/ primer. Many people will recommend cleaning the surface with TSP (a cleaning solution you can buy at stores like Home Depot) before painting. Another general recommendation is to use a wipe on liquid deglosser on semi gloss or gloss surfaces instead of a primer before painting. I will almost always just paint right over water based paints without cleaning or prime over oil based paints without cleaning.

Thanks for the video. I applied zinseer 123 water based primer over oil based painted kitchen ceiling- cleaned with STP, then used clean strip liquid sander deglosser. Now the primer can be remove with my finder nails. It has taken me hours and hours to scrape a small area on the 12x25 ceiling, a nightmare- denature alcohol that you used is a fuel- (1) is it dangerous to use in a kitchen ceiling? (2) would it remove just the primer and not the oil based paint?
@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 4 года назад
Raymos S You have a couple options: (the long proper way) sand the ceiling and start over or (the quick fix that won’t last forever) cover the ceiling with a shellac based primer as is (imperfections and all) and roll on a joint compound texture. Using denatured alcohol to wipe paint off the ceiling is a nightmare because the chemical is tough on your lungs and expensive. You’ll be dripping it everywhere and the scrubbing will be incredibly difficult and frustrating. Consider using an electric pole sander like this to save you time scraping the ceiling amzn.to/35m2AHo. You’ll be able to sand the primer off without having to climb up on a ladder. Use a low grit sand paper 40-60. If the ceiling is flat and you’d like to keep it that way use caution. If you damage the ceiling you can always roll on a texture to hide the imperfections. Covering the ceiling with joint compound is not ideal with oil based paint because the joint compound can peel and crack off. Use shellac based primer to cover the water based primer on the ceiling (shellac based primer is twice as expensive as oil based primer but has the best adhering properties) then cover the new coat of primer with joint compound (roll on and texture with proper brush). This will save you hours and hours. My only other comment about denatured alcohol is to use a respirator for chemicals specifically for your health. I have no insight on the flammability of the liquid. It evaporates quickly. But you’ll have to do your own research on how likely it is to ignite. I just don’t know. What are your thoughts?

I'm wondering if sanding might be the way to go since the paint is already coming off. I might have already answered my question but do you think the denatured alcohol is the best way to go? Thanks so much.
@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 4 года назад
Sam N I agree with your instincts on this, sand it off. Because of the large amount of surface area you’ll be tackling I recommend using some type of electric pole sander like this amzn.to/34bm6FQ. This will allow you to sand the ceilings and upper walls without getting on ladder. Usually a 5 in 1 tool is enough to tackle small amounts of peeling and flaking in a room, but if it’s truly happening everywhere, using just this tool would be back breaking work. Save time on the ceiling by going with a textured ceiling. Sand off the major chips and flakes and then roll on thinned down joint compound which is patterned randomly with a brush to hide all the imperfections in the ceiling.
@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 4 года назад
Also with that amount of sanding make sure to wear a P100 filter and use a fan to move old air out of and new air into the room. Breathing that amount of dust can really leave you hurting. I’m speaking from too many experiences.

@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 4 года назад
desertcat3 water works too for identifying oil based paint. Denatured is just more effective. Use a wet rag that has different color than the paint and try to wipe it off. If you can see the paint coming off it’s water based. If you’re only washing off dirt or grease but no paint that’s oil based paint.

@paulstockley441
@paulstockley441 Год назад
Best to remove all the loose paint. Sand the old oil based paint down fully (not just a quick rub) and prime with a good quality primer. Water based is fine. Then undercoat and 1to 2 top coats depending on the paint. People think that because it's fast drying it's a quicker job. There's way more prep work involved than with a recoat of oil based paint.
