These videos are refreshingly comprehensive and concise. Agree about the Purdy. The wall brushes are superb, they hold their shape, but wear beautifully to your stroke. Hard to go back after you've used them. Their poles aren't much cop, but I use the marathon mini a lot. The coverage those little sleeves achieve, and the speed you can move them at is incredible.

And replying within 1hr, you got a new subscriber Mr! 😉 Since I'm here may I ask something. I have soft wood door frames and primed doors and architraves (Deanta). I'm finding it hard on how to proceed - I bought shellac primer, solvent based undercoat and Dulux Satinwoood. I've already put wood filler in the frames as they have some imperfections and also hide the hammer fixings (watching your video suggests I should have done that after the primer). Now I'm selling the solvent based paints as I want to avoid the bad odor and cleaning the brushes as well as the long time between coats. If I move to waterbased, do I prime the softwood and undercoat all together and then paint all together ? I really wanted them gloss but not sure it will look good enough. So many questions 🤪🤯 Thank you 🙇‍♂️
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 3 года назад
Hi, yes I would first prime the remaining areas of bare timber after treating the knots. Then apply one coat of water based undercoat, or two to ensure it looks nice and white before applying your choice of top coat. The Crown Fastflow gloss does give a nice finish if you are looking for a gloss. I used it on a small cabinet in my "how to transform pine furniture in one day" video.

Very good. I just used some Bullseye 1-2-3 and Johnstone's Aqua Guard. The point about the brushes is critical, synthetic brushes are not a "nice to have". I had a set of Harris ones, which just said they were suitable for all paint types. They were fine with vinyl emulsion on the ceiling, but with the Aqua Guard on the wood, they were a nightmare. Paint dragging, not adhering. I thought it was the paint, yet I had seen videos of it being applied successfully. I switched to a different brush (a Dulux one I had for cutting in) which I knew was fully synthetic, and the paint went on like a different product. If you are going to use some water based paints, don't soldier on with old brushes that you have in the shed, unless you know that they are synthetic! If in doubt, get some from a decorator's centre, and take their advice.

@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 3 года назад
Hi Matt glad you are finding the video`s helpful. Unfortunately acrylic primer undercoat does not adhere well enough to oil based coatings and could cause problems with the paint chipping and peeling in the future. Two other products from Zinsser which are commonly used by decorators as first coat over oil based are Cover Stain and Bin Primer but I prefer the 123. I know these products are not cheap but they certainly do the job.

Very good video. I phoned dulux about their satinwood for advice on painting over oil based gloss. Was advised that as my paint was approx 10 yr old plus i could just lightly sand, wipe down and paint the satinwood straight on. After watching this if i ever did same job again i would use the zinsser 1st to give better key after sanding to make the water based paint more durable and less likely to chip with with knocks.

Goodness me that doesn't sound good. You could try removing the worst of the defects with a stripping knife and 120 grade abrasive paper. Then apply one or two coats of Zinsser Peel Stop over the bannister and spindles. This should help to provide a more stable surface before re-painting. Hope you do manage to sort it out.

You pointed out some very good tips, but one question I wood like to ask, would it not have been better to rough up the oil paint surface using scotchbrite, as scotchbrite material flexes and would get into the rebated grooves around the door panels better than sandpaper.

Use your brush to brush it back off the tin if it does drip 💧. Maybe while pouring rotate can slightly.

Brilliant video Aubrey!I am going to be tackling my utility room soon which to be honest hasn't been touched for 15 years,at the moment it looks to have been previously painted with bathroom paint on the walls.I would like to apply a scrubberble waterbased matt by Johnson's.The paint at the moment is peeling and flaking off in some areas and really sound in others.If I clean the whole lot with sugar soap,scrape off the defective paint add a coat of 1.2.3 then fill any imperfections then follow your video would you think I have covered everything?Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Hi Aubrey. What would you suggest for outdoors. I have stone window sills which have previously been painted with oil based paint. Every time I paint them they flake. What primer/undercoat or preparation would you suggest?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 2 года назад
Sorry for the delay Mark. First of all scrape off the flaking paint and fill and cracks or holes with a good quality exterior filler. It is quite common to paint hese stone cills with a good quality masonary paint like dulux weathershield. If you want a shinny finish, first apply a coat of alkali resisting primer, then two coats od Dulux Weathershield exterior flexible undercoat followed by a coat of the Dulux exterior flexible gloss. Hope you get this problem sorted 😊

Hi, just wondering could I use zinsser bulls eye 123, on an old gloss ceiling. Followed by regular water based emulsion. Or would I be best to sand it all first? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, it should be fine to give it two coats of bullseye followed by your choice of emulsion paint.

Hi I have oil based painted cream colored cabinets in kitchen . They have areas that are worn with paint chipped or scratched. I want to sand the clear coat and some more of the color off to make it look vintage. After I get the “worn look” I want what can I put on them to seal them or protect them ? Thank you for your help . Love your videos !!
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating Год назад
Glad you are finding the videos helpful. As the cabinets are painted with an oil based paint, once you have distressed them you could apply a coat of oil based polyurethane satin varnish to seal them. I would apply it with either a foam or or microfibre roller (4" mini roller). Hope all goes well for you.

Hi, If the paintwork has not been painted for many years (in the UK) then normally oil based would have been used. I am not sure about an alternative product to the meth`s.

Hi great video! Used this method to great effect with my door frames and skirting boards. I used dulux trade diamond satin wood for my top coat. I’ve prepped my stair case banister the same way and plan to finish with a water based gloss (dulux). Would you add any additional steps/products before top coating for a good smooth finish? I’m worried I won’t achieve anything close to the finish I could expect using a solvent based top coat. Cheers
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating Год назад
I am glad things have gone so well for you Christian that is great news. When painting the staircase spindles/banister I would suggest you slightly thin the water based gloss with a dash of water to avoid thick edges. When painting the spindles I would suggest painting them 2 at a time doing one side swiftly followed by the other to get a good wrap around effect. Hope all goes well for you on this next project 😊

Hi, I've got a door where the inner hinge edge of the door has lots of paint chips out of it. So I need some product to fill this in and get the edge nicely square. The indents are only 1mm depth at most though. I tried some Ronseal wood filler on my skirting boards which had a similar problem, but it was difficult to apply, and also to sand smooth afterwards. Would you just use some smooth polyfilla, or something else? Thanks
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 2 года назад
If you look at my video called how to fill cracks and holes in doors and windows I am using a filler which may be good for this. It is a very tough filler. Once you add the hardener it dries very quickly so you will need to work fast. Mix a small amount at a time, leave for about half an hour before rubbing down. Hope you manage to get this problem sorted 😊

Hi Aubrey, I’ve currently got one coat of 123 on the woodwork/door in a bedroom that’s been glossed previously. But I’ve run out of 123 now. I’ve got a tin of zinsser cover stain available and a tin of quick dry undercoat available. I want to end up with an eggshell topcoat. Should I use cover stain for a second coat or the quick dry undercoat before the eggshell?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 3 года назад
Hi, I would use the cover stain, many decorators use this instead of the 123 when changing from oil to water based. Hope all goes well with the decorating 😊

@@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating I thought the whole point of using the 1-2-3 was to prime for a water based top coat. Using Cover Stain is switching back to using oil/alkyd. Doesn't it defeat the object of using 1-2-3?

I hope it all turns out well 🙂 Do I need to lightly sand after every coat? Also is the Zinserr Bullseye 123 water based? Many thanks
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating

The Bullseye 123 is water based. I would just give the paintwork a light de-nib with some fine abrasive (240 grade) before you apply the last coat of paint. Hope all goes well with the decorating Ladybird 😊

Hello. Nice video. I have in storage LEYLAND TRADE ACRYLIC PRIMER UNDERCOAT. Will this paint work over oil paint? Thankyou.
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 3 года назад
Unfortunately acrylic primer undercoat does not adhere well to oil based paints. It will easily chip and peel away from the surface. I am sure it will be useful for other decorating projects 😊

Hi there, That primer allows you to paint over gloss without sanding, is that right or sanding always required ? Regards
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 2 года назад
The product suggests that no sanding is required. However a light sand with a fine abrasive does ensure a better finish and also helps the paint to adhere to the surface. Hope all goes well with the decorating.

Hello- our decorator accidentally put an oil based primer on a raw MDF cabinet instead of a water based one. The paint we have to go on top is water based. Are we able to put a water based primer on top of the oil based primer in order to kind of start over? Or is there something else we need to do? Thanks! Katie

To be on the safe side it may be best to apply a coat of the Zinsser Bullseye 123 over the oil based primer before applying your chosen water based paint. I know this is more expense but the 123 is a useful paint to have around. Hope all goes well for you Katie 😊

Is it possible to apply the zinsser 123 bulls eye undercoat straight over an oil based surface or would some sanding need to be done and then the undercoat should be applied?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 2 года назад
Hi, Zinsser say that no sanding is required before applying the 123. I do tend to sand down first to get a smoother surface and also to increase adhesion.

Does this work with walls, too for multiple rooms? Or is it just too big a hassle, and i should just swap new water paint with an oil based paint instead.
